I do put extra stays in when the weather picks up just to keep the net straight. I've rigged these nets just for beach netting with double foot rope and a float every 63g float every 14 stitches. The foot rope is hard down on the bottom there would not be any rick of the net twisting.
if you think this is destructive, research what happens on a trawlers, tons of fish are thrown over the side dead every day, because the boat didn't have a quota to land the species of fish they caught and/or the fish is too small.
@tonybuttie3038 well said tony quota I the biggest killer. There are square mesh panels put in trawls /beam trawls to allow small under size fish to escape. But even with is there is still a by catch.
you should tie the lead rope down with slate every 20 feet it will stop the net rolling when the tide comes in your catch will go up.

This method of fishing seems very destructive to fish that do not meet the regulatory size!
Sadly there will always be a by catch I use bigger mesh to minimize this.
