I have never been to the USA,but thanks to this guy I have vivid images of certain, areas, states, etc. This poet is also a musician 'The morning's first cigarette' is about as good as it gets' I should know by now...' pure macic;thank you James.
"I bought a whiskey for the gypsy, and she turned my leather back into skin... just a fleeting sense of that rare suspense I once thought made the world go round, but now there's no one to talk to, when the lines go down." Such a perfect description of time passing and how it changes you. Maybe not for everyone, but definitely for me.
"I don't want another drink, I only want the last one again" How can someone come up with that? I could never be a song writer. And a good song should last a spell. Every song doesn't have to run 2-3 minutes. I like that this runs 5+.
Yeah, that's one of those quick one-liners that seem so obvious but, in reality, are so difficult to come up with that they kind've make your jaw drop a bit. Townes and Guy were also really good at that, and IMO, McMurtry is every bit their equal.
@@Ace_Hunter_lives "I'll miss the system here. The bottom's low. And the treble's clear. But it don't pay to think to much. On things you leave behind." "I wish I was in Austin In the Chili Parlor Bar Drinking Mad Dog Margaritas And not caring where you are."
Kudos. I'm sitting here waiting for Hurricane Idalia to make landfall in a few hours. There is a life changing event on the way that can't stopped only rin from. No running here, the a few remaining souls listening to your music. Sincerely, thanks so much for sharing the comfort of your songs. In a few hours all our comforts here will be swept away in ruins. No running here. Afterall we all are just visiting here on this planet. Thanks again. Had to send this before the powerlines go down and are washed away. Kudos.
James McMurty is a treasure, great lineage as his Pop was Larry McMurty the great writer on Lonesome Dove and other great books. Storytelling magic. Cheers!
I love John Prine, Dylan, Zevon...but when I hear McMurtry I just hear Texas. He paints the state in words and music like a Renaissance Master painting Italy in oils.
If there ever was a song that could impart a sense of nostalgia about something as disastrous as a hurricane, this is it. Nothing like a good hurricane party to take the edge off an impending disaster.
With all due respect to "Choctaw Bingo" I'm increasingly inclined to be believe this is McMurtry's best song, which means it's also one of the best songs ever written. "Just a fleeting sense of that rare suspense I once thought made the world go 'round"...how the fuck do you come up with something so perfect and profound?!?!?
Don't know how I got here, but glad I did. I've been hypnotized but his voice and playing.🤘 Rad-Rad song! Love it! 💜... Now... Eff you #Dorian.... Go Away! 😭🌀😭
Best Lyrics I have heard in awhile Some insurance man-biker is yellin' out for one more beer But a part-time pirate just can't get much respect around here We got our problems too, man we'll get to you In just a minute, sit your drunk ass down
Hybrid picking a 12 string. Come on man! Is that even possible? Apparently so. Terrific song. The way it weaves between the literal and the figurative is mind-blowing. Beautiful songwriting and performance.
Look into Ryan Spendlove on youtube and maybe have him open for you someday. You both just tell the truth without worrying about repercussions while being real to us as people, just normal people even maybe from the real leveland!
this dude's the best thing I've discovered in music in a really long time

McMurtry paints a very vivid mental image. And a very accurate one.
I don't know if you've found his song "Lights of Cheyenne," but it's one of his best in that respect :)
3:58 Every verse in this song is a gem but after all these years this one is still my favorite.
"I don't want another drink. I just want that last one again." Damn that's brilliant.
One of the best lines ever!!!!

Storyteller, lyricist, and generally misanthropic. That's his word. Love his music and all the little stories he sings.
"I don't want another drink, I only want the last one again" How can someone come up with that? I could never be a song writer.

+T B-SHAW this song has more meaning than I'd ever like to admit. At least in my younger days.
Cheers to you, watch the wind:)

"Some insurance man/ biker." That's the line that got me. So true.

I hear Dylan, John Hiatt, Warren Zevon in his music and voice. I just became a fan of his, thanx for posting this.
John Prine too. Listen to Charlemagne's Home Town.
Big fan of all of those but he is his own creature. A beast.
I love John Prine, Dylan, Zevon...but when I hear McMurtry I just hear Texas. He paints the state in words and music like a Renaissance Master painting Italy in oils.

James is a damned fine songwriter and lyricist. He has a uncanny ability to capture a moment in song. Beautiful...
John Prine. Greg Brown. Warren Zevon. James McMurtry.
Been digging him since I first heard his voice/lyrics. Love his dry humor.
His playing and songwriting abilities are way under rated! Good stuff...
Teeth gritting intensity Every song has it. So refreshing.

There’s a lot of versions on You Tube but still, James McMurtry should have the ear of this country.
right now I'm stuck on James Mcmurtry and Nick Drake, figure that...
When someone says they like Midwest Emo, this better be what they're talking about
It's weird to think that we may have to explain this to younger people someday, telling them what landlines were.
