the comment below... " only heard as recorded" .... come on now! i have all of McMurtry's material and have been a fan for a long time, and have seen him 3 times. i will say that when i buy any artists material i ALWAYS buy live recordings last as i too favour the studio versions. but to say that this is an "injustice", no! far from it. not sure if you have seen James Live yet, but if you have, then you will know that you are hearing a premium band and this vid shows them cutting loose! thx!
In my opinion, this song should be heard only as it was recorded on the first album . This is his greatest, grittiest, darkest, earliest song. Anyone that disagrees should listen to the original. As pretty as this is, it is an injustice to the song as it was meant to be. Before smacking me down, listen to the original.
@@howardrobinson4938 I just don't see this as a "jam" song. This one song set the whole mood and feel of his music and his career. It was the title track of his first album but the record company pushed him to release "Painting By Numbers" as the first single. Anyway, TLITWL is an exceptional song exactly as recorded on the album because it sets that style. I knew James fairly well in high school - a strange character, but always nice to me. I doubt he'd find my take as insulting.
@@howardrobinson4938 Also..hmmmm...11 years ago....this could very well have been me drunk commenting. I put a stop to that many years ago. " I didn't mean to say it, but I meant what I said. Too long in the wasteland must've gone to my head."

I have been playing guitar for 35 years. Unfortunately , fell short in the song writing dept... A reasonably good guitar player, not outstanding , and a soso singer. Some guys, ( SEE ABOVE ), have it all , in spades and droves. Thank the Lord for these cats.
“I hadn’t intended to bend the rules, but whiskey don’t make liars it just makes fools...so I didn’t mean to say it, but I meant what I said “....one of my favorite lines ever! I actually use it whenever it fits ...you’d be surprised how often. Like, say, Roseanne Barr (substitute Ambien for whiskey lol)
"Whiskey don't make liars it just makes fools" That line becomes more apparent me every time I see her. James McMurtry, you and a few of your songwriting compatriots might as well write the soundtrack to my life.
Hey Nancy... That comment made me smile really large. Nathan taught me everything I know about music. I met him when I was 14, and wound up recording his first studio record "Out of My Skin". Too Long In The Wasteland was always one of my favorite covers by him. His version evolved continuously from his solo days, then his time with Alibi, and then his time The Lost Cause, and finally the final version with John Henry Trinko on Nathan Davis Live... Anyway seeing someone talk about Nathan online... on a non-Nathan oriented page makes me REALLY happy. Cheers!
Cheers Grant. Nathan is with me on stage from time to time. He tells me, "Go ahead . . . shock yourself!" I close my eyes and make a conscience effort to not give a shit about perfection and care more about the lightening rod of ascension. Check out one or more of my vid's - Nancy Jones - "Whiskey" or "Big House." Nathan is my inspiration.
Superb as always. One of the best songs from early on, tight band & great bridge. Will hit the Continental next time in Austin but only if you're there.
Who better to take with ya to Europe than Ian Mclagen? If hes good enough for Rod the Mod and The Glimmer Twins hes good enough for a Ft Worth Texas boy!!! Yee Fuckin Haw Aint it fun bein from Texas!!!!
anybody else hear a cool pink floydy (particularly gilmoury, but watersy too) influence in this song? surprised to think that even though I do think JM defies categorization
James is right. When you spend too long in the wasteland--you can't leave.
"Well I don't know, I might not speak the language anymore" indirect and elegant, amazing wordsmith
I like the original version but live...'specially when James straps on that black ESP tele, this song just crushes.
Im going to say this one more time, I completely forgot how good J.M.s music is with the live show simply superb 🌟
he is still rocking the Continental Club
Too long in the waist land....Wow...completely badass done righteously....very nice ...y'all kicked ass on that jam😁👍😉🎵🎸🍺
Luuuuvvvv this man 💝💝💝👌👍
I love how he's in Europe but he tells people to stop by the club in Austin texas if theyre in the area haha
And he means it too.
If any of you are Zanzabar, just come check us out in the zulu Lounge.
I took him up on the offer...before the meme flu and global insanity
I know they would have to travel all the way across the Atlantic Ocean, but it's a small world and James knows that! 😁😁😁
near perfection.
One of the best live versions of the song. Would like to find the version of Laredo from this DVD.
Keep rocking y'all. Wow!
When times are good, you enjoy the music. When times are bad, you understand the lyrics.
yes!
......awesome.....
That’s music brother 🤘

PERFECT/FUNNY
I live in blue Grass country, and I am tired of that feel good stuff, without much substance, James is much more fulfilling

I believe the Continental Club was also a place to see SRV back in the day. I really enjoy this live version.
Big Brother Jimmie still plays there.
3:56 is that start of Tim Holt's solo ! Go Dad Go !!!
Love Tim's playing. He helps keep that band a well oiled machine working smoothly as well.
AINT IT FUN BEING FROM TEXAS!
My favourite artist of all time. It's not even close.
I'll have to travel to the states to see him.
I could listen to McMurtry all day. And all night. And all day. And... well, you get the point.

James McMurtry, you and a few of your songwriting compatriots might as well write the soundtrack to my life.
Mr. Guitar Player knows how to play.
Brilliant as always - from an awesome artist
Let's all go to Texas !
LOVE THIS SONG!! You guys should check out the version by Nathan Davis on his posthumous "Live" album.
