    IIRC at one time the U.S. Military established that penetration of a 1/2" pine board was a fatal shot, 7/8 of the way through a 3/4" seems to meet that standard. Amazing...

    I used to find longrange shooting boring to watch but I like the way you two just go out there , do your own thing with no huff and make it so interesting , I also love the science behind it all too.Learning so much.
    The down side of your videos is that you have cost me close to 5K in a sako 243 etc , but in a good way.
    Cheers luv your work.

      Clinton Walsh ya at 27 foot pounds of energy you would be able to kill rabbit, pigeons. Vital or head shot. 22 air rifles are about that maybe a bit more.

    Your skill and abilities to hit long range are still amazing! I appreciate your sharing this test of the 22lr Velocitor rounds. That is the round I’m starting to build my budget ELR on to train myself to get out to 500 yards. Will be a bit before I decide on all the details, but have a great starting point with the round. Now on to the platform!

    I believe the US military reckon that any projectile capable of penetrating a 1/2" Pine board is capable of producing a lethal injury, obviously with appropriate shot placement. This demo would indicate that the 22LR is capable of lethality at about 700-750 yards. Worth bearing in mind when selecting shooting backdrops.

    I shoot .22LR out to 400 yards regularly with a Savage mkII with a 20 MOA rail and at that distance it's a rainbow trajectory.
    This is shooting .22LR on a next level that most likely won't even understand. I mean just look at the ridiculous angle that scope is mounted on! It's facing straight at the tip of the barrel.
    This is very impressive shooting for 22LR!

    Wonder how much better a .22 WMR round would do? No difference in the bullet mass and associated percent errors I wouldn't think. But, perhaps the powder loads might have a little less percent deviance.

  • @terrydees5998
    @terrydees5998 8 років тому +3

    Very interesting. I like the way you used the water to get you on target. Great idea.
    You might weigh each loaded round and cull the ones that are too light or too heavy. Some brands that I have put thru this process will cull as high as 40%. The results are match grade rounds that are very consistent in preference. Yes it takes a little work but for some tests the results are worth it.

    CCI now makes a round called CCI copper. They're supposed to be the fastest. 22lr round made at 1800 fps. Although this test and your marksmanship are outstanding, I would love to see you try it again with the new round.

    • @markandsamafterwork
      @markandsamafterwork  8 років тому

      I would not think those would be able to shoot past 300 yards, even the CCI stringers can not get out there, the lighter bullets do not stay stable. What we found was you need a 40 grain projectile in a 22lr, those are the only ones we have found that can be stretched out to longer ranges. Those CCI copper would be good for flatter shooting in normal 22lr distances. Cheers

    That's some really good shooting from a sitting position. I would actually try 40gr target ammo at 1040 to 1080ft/s; you'll need more elevation obviously, but it doesn't go through transonic and it'll be more consistent.
    Loved the video, thanks for making it, I'd like to see this sort of thing again done with high end target ammo.

    • @markandsamafterwork

    I used to knock over running jackrabbits at around 400 yards with a Browning .22 SAR with iron sights. I would use the dust kicked up to correct my "aim" and would usually connect on the third shot. I say "aim" because I doubt I was actually aiming. MarkandSam AfterWork G'd Day to you, mate. I thought I was pretty hot stuff with a .22 until one day a friend and I walked up to a beaver pond just to take a gander at it. I had my Browning and he had a Winchester lever gun in .22 mag. Two drake mallards got up. I never even thought about taking a shot for multiple reason, such as it was illegal. Meanwhile I heard a "crack" and one drake went down shot through the head. Click-clack and crack and the second one came down, shot through the head. This was decades ago and I'm still flabbergasted.

    I forget who determined it, but I saw on Iraqveteran8888's channel years ago, that any round that can make it through 1/2" plywood in considered lethal. If these rounds made it 7/8ths of the way through 3/4" pine plywood... than the 22lr can kill at 720+ yards.

    I'm a wee bit surprised you would want to be shooting at water; however, when you can see all that is within 550 yards (~500m) of said water, I guess that takes a bit of the risk out of it....
    I think I'm just nervous of shooting at water since a relative of mine died from a 22lr ricochet off the water....but, I must admit the shooter and the victim were both at waters edge (standing quite close to one another, not across the water or anything crazy)...but, I digress
    Nice shooting, nice rifle, nice camera, nice video, nice setting....oh yeah, & nice pod on that rifle, that looks very flexible (adjustable) & quite sturdy. I would be out every arvo playing with that rig too, if it were mine.

    I occasionally shoot .22LR from 100-300yards and never see any key holes or odd target holes. A guy in the comment section of a video told me that my bullets were tumbling when they went sub sonic then re stabilizing to leave a clean bullet hole on the target. Im 99% sure he is wrong. Do you think that the .22lr bullet is tumbling then re stabilizing over longer distances? From my experience the transition from supersonic to sub sonic(with .22lr) seems to have minimal impact on bullet flight. Great vid as always, thanks for uploading.

    • @markandsamafterwork
      @markandsamafterwork  8 років тому +1

      Hi Robert, thanks for your comment. Your are right, in fact bullets can "wobble" when going transonic and then re stabilize to retain their flight path, but if they start to tumbler they will not recover. Cheers and all the best.

    Hi Mark & Sam!
    I think your channel is just great, especially the "22lr ELR" series that you guys have been posting.
    Im planning a 22lr "low cost" build with a single shot Walther match rifle as a base,
    whats your experience with the FX No Limit rings?
    Are they reliable or do they shift easy if they would get knocked around a bit?
    A solid mount would be the best I suppose, but I do like the adjustability of these rings.
    Keep it up!

    I know you are shooting so downhill it's not funny, but if that was someones head, they'd be dead as a doe doe. Ye ol' 22lr - what an amazing round. I'm a big 223 fan, but credit where it's due, 22lr - I loose respect for anyone who scoffs at it. Hmm, I wonder what a 17 mhr would do?

  • @sapago4166
    @sapago4166 5 років тому

    I think that was more like 5 or 6 MOA. The board was 24x24. 3 MOA would hit in a circle 23" in diameter, which would fit on the board. 4 MOA would hit in a circle 31" in diameter, and give you about a 75-80% hit rate on a 2'×2' square target.

    • @sapago4166
      @sapago4166 5 років тому

      Hit rate will give you the easiest approximation of MOA. 5 MOA is a 50% hit rate. 6 MOA is about 36%, which seems more accurate.
      What I absolutely cannot understand is how you don't seem to have keyholing. That is really surprising to me.

    • @markandsamafterwork
      @markandsamafterwork  5 років тому +1

      Lol, not really trying to group, just a bit of fun and a bit interesting. also keep in mind, with ELR, conditions have more control than rifle, and as for stability, we see this all the time, things don't go a crazy during the transonic zone as many people think and here is more evidence of that, Cheers

      Hi again, no just out of the box, but yes to sort by weight and size would help this sort of ammo, but truth is it shot better than I had hoped, and as said was really just a bit of interesting fun, it is also a stock 452, I think they run 1:16, we just tested several lots of ammo previously and found the CCI Velocitor work at these long ranges, cheers and all the best.

      Back in the day the US Army did some testing and concluded that if a round can pass through 3/4" pine, then it potentially has enough energy to create a mortal wound. Not an exact science, but good rule of thumb type thing.
