I'll never forget the Coyotes trading Daniel Briere for Chris Gratton. They said it was because Gratton was bigger and better at faceoffs. This was the year after Briere led the Coyotes in goals. Gratton was terrible and Briere went on to have a great career in Buffalo.
The dude provided zero context on any trade. Like please at least explain the reason why a team like the Jets were shipping off a 76 goal scorer... it makes a huge difference because it’s so important to explain the context and situation at the time... it’s ridiculous to just go back 30 years and SOLEY look at the trades from today only... just saying “this one made it to hall of fame, and I don’t even know who the other guys are!” Ugh bro that’s not enough!!
Leafs fan as well and as much as I hated that trade even at the time it happened I was fuming, Boston would have taken pogge or Rask. worst player for player trade, but worst all time was trading for tom Kurvers for 5th overall......just some guy named Scott Neidermyer
Yeah, this trade was seen as fair at the time, Hasek was 27 (or 26?) when he got traded it was seen that he had reached his skill ceiling. Even Buffalo REALLY did not expect to get the goalie they got - I think it was Meehan that said "we thought we were getting a decent goalie, not the best goalie in the league!"
Calgary is actually happy with the trade with Hull. Rob Ramage was a crucial part of that team winning the Stanley cups. Players and management said they wouldn’t have won without him. Calgary had to give up a good player to get a piece to put them over the top.
Oh no we are not happy with this trade. WTF are you talking about . With Hull’s talent we could have won more then 1 Cup with the talent we had at the time .
@@JustpissoffTrudeau flames won a cup and rampage was a huge reason they did. How do you know they would have won more cups with hull? He would have been gone like every other star that played in the late 80’s early 90’s.
The Marcel Dionne trade is definitely the worst trade in Wings history...but trading Klima, Sharples, Graves, and Joe Murphy for Jimmy Carson and Adam Oates for Bernie Federko in the same offseason is up there. Had the 89 Wings draft not happened, those trades would have devastated the Wings for the next 15 years.
Gotta say, in hindsight, san jose loosing kiprusoff for Vlasic is honestly a pretty good deal. They traded a HoF, yes, but for essentially another could you imagine prime Vlasic and prime Giordano in calgary? with prime Phaneuf too?! they would have had the most tight defense in the league and would have been extremely dangerous to face against in late 2000s
The Espo/martin trade was the Hawks worst all-time trade. It built cup winners (70, 72) out of at the time a down and out bruin team that had missed the playoffs for several seasons. It was possibly the second worst trade in North American sports history (with the Ruth trade the only trade i can think of as worse right now.). Far worse than bailing on Hasek too soon while still having Belfour in net.
The Patrick Roy trade also included shipping their captain, Mike Keane to Colorado (the Habs never would have shipped St. Patrick to the Nordiques). Mike Keane was a big reason the Avalanche won the cup in 1996.
Wings had no choice but to trade Dionne. Dionne made it hugely clear he didn’t want to play in Detroit. So the owners hands were tied. No one want him to leave except Dionne.
Before I say this, I’m a sharks fan so you can see my point of view. First off, comparing Jumbo Joe to a cup is kind of bs. Thornton was a big piece in building up the sharks as a team and was much more essential than you can imagine. I think it’s unfortunate that he never got a cup, but keep in mind, the sharks made the playoffs many times in the span of 20 years or so, and Thornton was always a star in the playoffs. Bruins got a cup? Sure. But Joe’s value to the Sharks at the time of the trade was worth more than a cup.
I still love Joe, not taking anything away from how good he is. I think maybe the Seguin trade for Loui Eriksson was probably worse for Boston. Plus the Sharks made the Finals a few years back too.
There is no more worst trade in boston history then Ken Dryden traded to Montreal. He finished his short career with 258wins in only 397 regular season games winning a conn smyth trophy on his first playoff. After winning the calder and 5 vezinas and 6 stanley cups in less then a decade.
@@martinperron9164 Still a hard one to call. Definitely shot themselves in the foot, but it was hard to tell how a goalie was developing back in the 60s and 70s. More of a hindsight is 20/20 trade, just like Toronto trading Tuukka Rask to Boston. Toronto didn't really know Tuukka's potential yet.
Flyers fan here, wanting to give the Predators some credit for the Hartnell/Timonen deal. Both of them were free agents and almost certainly signing with a different team anyway. It was actually a bold and risky move on the part of the Flyers to sacrifice a first round pick just for negotiating rights.
*RIP Demitra. Absolute beauty. FivePointsVids, homie...you gotta familiarize yourself with player names..he butchered quite a few, commonly known names and literally spelt Selanne, as Sellann.*
Dionne wanted out of Detroit. The wings were horrid and he wanted to win l. The wings also didn’t want to pay him big money. Adam Oates for federko was their worst trade by far.
@@alwillk Maybe the worst, but good ol' Jack Adams can certainly challenge the "by far" aspect of that statement. There's the time he traded Sawchuk at his peak, with only four seasons under his belt, for nobody good. There's the time he traded away Ted Lindsay to be petty, and a young Glenn Hall for nobody good. There's the time he gave up a young Johnny Bucyk to get Sawchuk back. And there's the time he basically shipped Red Kelly out for nothing (who ended up being a key center on a Maple Leafs team that won four Cups and knocked the Wings out of the playoffs four times, including three finals).
Brendan Shanahan should have been mentioned 1: traded from New Jersey to St.Louis for Scott Stevens,2: Hartford trading him for Keith Primeau and Paul Coffey to Detroit,Whalers gave us 3 Stanley Cups(1997,1998,2002)
Shanahan and Stevens trade never happened though. The Blues lost Stevens in arbitration cause they didn't have the picks to give to NJ. Why didn't they have the picks, cause they signed Stevens the year before from the Caps 😂
If I recall correctly, the 1st pick we got for Hartnell and Timonen was our own 1st pick that we traded for Peter Forsberg that played like 20 games with us. It hurts
FYI, Dino Ciccarelli did NOT win the Cup three years later, Wings got swept by the Devils in 1995 and Dino was bouncing around the Florida teams when the Red Wings won their Cups. That said, the Ciccarelli for Miller trade is astoundingly bad -- even worse than Forsberg for Erat. You could also make a case for the Dale Hunter trade (Caps sent Quebec their 1 that turned into Joe Sakic, yikes).
I’d agree that trade actually benefited the devils and saw Atlanta fall deeper into becoming Jets! Yes Kovy left after 2 and half seasons but they still got a star player giving up shit! he also fortified the money devils owed him when he left so you’re dead wrong on that! As mentioned previously do your research! Only made yourself sound like a salty devils fan
@@idontgivetkachuk The Devils haven’t paid him since 2013. The contract was mutually terminated. The $250,000 a year that counts against their cap is a recapture penalty, but it’s not actual money that they are paying anyone.
The Leafs have had so many bad trades and the one picked here is the worst but the one that hurts the most is trading Lanny. Harold Ballard showed how an owner can destroy a team
Calgary WON THE FREAKING CUP with the Hull trade - no Rob Ramage, no Stanley Cup, end of story. This is actually one of the best trades the Flames ever made. People may disagree with me me and focus solely on Hull's prolific point totals, but the goal is always to win a championship. Calgary did just that by flipping Hull for Ramage. Not a bad trade whatsoever - the goal is to win.
AHHHH DOMINIK HASEK. Once I said Chelios, I thought of either this trade or the Ed Belfour trade. I will say though, Eric Daze was my favorite player as a young kid. That dude used to smack slappers! Had his best career season before a back injury essentially ended it too. Great videos man. Just found you recently and I've learned a ton already.
Daze could actually score consistently in an era when almost no one could. Poor guy was hurt a lot. Some goalies turn into GOATs, but most don’t. Having Chelios win Cups in Detroit would’ve been hard to watch as a Hawks fan
Mikka Kiprusoff just might be the most underrated and under appreciated player in NHL history. The guy was one of the best goalies ever, and no one ever talks about him.
Even worse than that was trading Red Kelly to Toronto in 1960 for Marc Reaume. That might seem like ancient history for most of you but at the time it was a giant robbery for the Leafs. A few years later in 1967, there was another huge lopsided Original 6 trade when Phil Esposito was traded by Chicago to Boston and thus began the era of the record-setting 2 time Cup-winning Big Bad Bruins of the 1970s.
I dunno about that Leafs trade. To me, the worst trade they ever made was sending speedster Russ Courtnall to Montreal for goon John Kordic (RIP) in a straight-up trade. I was only a kid but even I knew that it was a terrible trade. I knew it was bad because, as a lifelong Habs fan, I was ecstatic about it.
The Maple Leafs made some terrible trades in the '70s. A few that come to mind are: the rights to Bernie Parent and the draft choice that was used to take Larry Goodenough for Doug Favell and the draft choice that was used to take Bob Neely (1973); Doug Jarvis for Greg Hubick (1975); George Ferguson and Randy Carlyle for Dave Burrows (1978); and Lanny McDonald and Joel Quenneville for Wilf Paiement and Pat Hickey (1979).
To be fair, at the time of the trade, Yashin was still a Star and Chara had not developed into much by that point (back to back -27 seasons). I recall the Ottawa media at the time referred to Chara as a pilon. Granted the No. 2 pick turned out to be a huge win for Ottawa in Spezza, but for how good Yashin was at the time, I don't think it was a bad trade.
milbury has turned a lot of teams into garbage if ownership allowed him to do it . islanders had picks 3 ,4 ,5 of the 97 draft on their team , jokinen 3 , luongo 4 , and brewer, he also took that goalie dipietro over 19 y/o dany heatley in the draft in calgary . good thing nobody trusts his judgement anymore .
@@kokanee2010a ill never talk shit about dipietro because the guy was indeed good, the issue was that his body litterally gave up on him...but otherwise ye...olli jokinen, roberto luongo, zdeno chara, eric brewer, jason spezza just to mention these...
As a Rangers fan I liked DiPietro. Aside from bad teams, his other down fall was being over aggressive at times. He would come way too far out of the net and took unnecessary hits. He was talented but that 15 year contract that Garth Snow gave him was like an albatross around his neck. Who can honestly live up to that kind of contract
Boston actually traded Thornton because they had to keep Bergeron or Thornton, because of the cap. They kept Bergeron because of his off ice personality and defensive skill. I don’t know why they just didn’t keep both
I think the reason why they didn't keep both was the fact that they wanted some cap space so they could sign Chara and Marc Savard in the off season, at least I think that's why or one of the reasons.
The real reason why is unknown, aside from the gm wanting to build the team around Bergeron, which somehow meant Thornton had to be traded. Then they have Thornton away for nothing. It had nothing to do with the cap. It possibly might have been classic Jeremy Jacobs cheapness, but he would have had to have had a drastic change of heart considering he opened the wallet for Chara and Savard. That's not completely out of character for Jacobs, but while Savard was really good, he was no Joe Thornton. And the logic of wanting to trade Thornton to build around Bergeron makes no sense when you go out and sign a new top line center that very next off-season.
4:40 whoa, whoa, whoa. Hull looked FANTASTIC on the Flames when he was traded, with 50pts in 52 games in 87-88 before he got traded. Granted, Calgary at the time was completely loaded and Hull was demanding ice time on a team with Loob, Joey Mullen and Lanny McDonald already entrnched at RW with future star Theo Fleury waiting in the wings. When Hull came up EVERYBODY thought he was just there because of his his dad's name. He was a very one dimensional player who was playing for a coach in Terry Crisp who demanded his wings to play both ways. Calgary thought Hull was doing well more because of the talent that surrounded the team rather than anything he was doing. Calgary didnt have a spot for him and figured that they were trading a former 6th round pick in Hull for former #1 draft pick Rob Ramage who was a very good defensive defenseman as well as getting a much needed backup goalie in Rick Walmsley. The trade, at least on paper, looks terrible but both Ramage and Walmsley ended up being invaluable to Calgary's Cup run in 89. Yes, it still looks awful on paper but at the time it ended up being a good trade for both teams. The trade was an absolute steal for the Blues but at the time
On the red wings. Dionne wanted out of Detroit because he wanted to win. Adam Oates for Bernie federko was their worst trade. Oates went to the HOF and federko retired the next year.
Bodger, was a solid defenceman maybe not a huge point producer ....but he is well known by a lot of guys in the league as a great teammate far from a nobody
One of San Jose's trade blunders was in 1998 when they made the deal to acquire Bryan Marchment and David Shaw. The return to Tampa Bay was Andrei Nazarov and an option to acquire Florida's 1st round pick in the 1998 Draft in return for Tampa's 1st pick in 1998 draft. Tampa swapped it because it was the 1st overall pick and they, of course, picked Vincent Lecavalier
Cant we sort of say this about joe Thornton? Boston would eventually win the cup... Even if its like 5 years after the trade and Thornton... Who actually thinks he can win a cup in toronto next year?
also, they had Eddie Belfour in his prime. Hasek was young and probably would have left via free agency with how well he looked when he did play, so they got what they could for him.
The Brett Hull trade being called bad pisses me off. Hull was too small to play against the Oilers, and that's what every Flames team of the 80's and 90's was built for. Same with Savard and St. Louis. Too small for the team at the time. Rather than lose these players through free agency the Flames traded them and got at least something back. In Wamsley we got a solid backup for Vernon and in Ramage we got some toughness and a competent d-man. Also, anyone who doesn't think Doug Gilmour for Gary Fucking Leeman isn't the worse trade IN THE HISTORY OF SPORTS is an idiot.
Regarding Oilers, Weight’s trade and Messier hurt them but, to me, the worst trade was ** Penner ** (originally wrote Lupul by mistake). offer sheet where they gave up first, second and third (Gardiner and Schultz) picks for a role player as well as paying him 5+ million /season.
Other ppl make the same mistakes... I don't get why I get sm heat for it.. Im busy wit college and work so its hard to nail everything 100% correctly... So sorry but I still hope u enjoyed..
The Flames GM said, "Brett Hull will score a ton of goals in the NHL." But Wamsley and Ramage would help the Flames win the Stanley Cup. And that's what you're working towards. As for Winnipeg trading away Selanne, it was a salary dump. That was proven by the Jets leaving Winnipeg because they couldn't continue with a low Canadian dollar. The Hasek trade was when Hasek wasn't doing that well. perhaps coaches didn't like his flopping style because his GAA and sv% wasn't very good. This was before he got to buffalo and then got good, good enough to get his coach fired. It makes no sense discussing any trades by Detroit in the seventies because none of them were very wise.
Exactly. Hasek would've left the Hawks in free agency anyway for a starting goalie position on another team. It was obvious at the time Hawks were gunna stick with Eddie the Eagle
It believe it was Dirk Graham who put it best about Hasek in Chicago... "I don't know how to pronounce his name, but we can't score on him in practice"
@@kakarotblake If the hawks had given Hasek a chance, they might have won a cup with him. Instead both goalies had to go elsewhere to win cups, so that choice was a loss for chicago.
The thing with the hawks and Dominick was that they already had a young goalie named Ed belfour who was both younger and had recently come off an amazing rookie season where he won both the Calder and vezina. He would win another vezina and is in the HOF. People forget that Dominick was over 28 when he joined the sabers. The only reason why Chicago would keep him was if their GM could see the future
Gretzky trade probably indeed the worst Oiler trade but the downfall after 90 cup was the repeated bad trades to every star who wanted money. Messier trade perhaps hurt us more in the end, if not as lopsided.
No, the trade was a win for the league because without Gretzky in Los Angeles, would there even be hockey in Dallas, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Anaheim, San Jose, Nashville, Raleigh, Tampa and Miami? I don’t think so!
The Dionne trade is the worst in NHL history because Detroit KNEW he was an all-time great already. Brett Hull was a nobody when he was traded... who became an all-time great goal scorer later on. But to trade someone you KNOW is a superstar and get nothing back... That's a horrible trade because you KNOW what you're trading away.
I agree the Jets trading off Selanne wasn't wise. Same with Calgary trading Hull. Vancouver really did goof with getting rid of Neely too. Can you imagine him and Bure working together? Most of these trades were really bad, especially the Leafs. They've had a bad history of trading off potential draft picks. Not just Scott Niedermayer, but Bryan Trottier and Mike Bossy. Try imagining if they had barely made any of those mistakes. Might have won them at least one cup after 1967. Sad reality.
if kipper turning into M-E Vlasic is the worst trade on San Jose's behalf damn good on them......he was what a top line d man for a good 10 years and played like 15 or so there
The devils absolutely won the Kovalchuk trade...dude helped carry them to the finals in 2012. The biggest pieces coming from the devils were oduya (a decent 2nd pairing guy) and bergfors (decent rookie year and fell off the map after). “A kings ransom” is not at all true. Quantity for quality. Kovy was a top 10 arguably top 5 forward at the time of the trade and behind ovechkin, he was the 2nd best pure goal scorer in the league. If that’s the devils worst trade...sign me up for more like that.
Kovalchuk dipped after only a few years of that mega deal. His on ice play might have been good for the team, but him giving the Devils cap issues for years screwed them over
@@idontgivetkachuk the devils never had cap issues with Kovalchuk. It would have led to cap issues down the road, but he went to Russia and the contract was terminated before it became an issue at all. Thank god. He may have only been in jersey for a couple years but again he was the best player on a team that was 2 wins away from a cup. I’d do that trade over again in a second because the package given up for a player of his caliber was peanuts and not even close to “a kings ransom”. Oduya was the only piece of that deal that had any success at all in the league going forward and he did that with the blackhawks. I’m not trying to be disrespectful and think you did a great job with the video but that was not a bad trade at all by jersey.
The Demitra for Olsson trade was absolutely horrible even when it was announced. However, Demitra (RIP) wanted out and wasn't going to play for the team anymore. Why they would trade a young player who still had potential for a player who wasn't even a prospect is beyond me, but hindsight is what it is. I would say the trade of Spezza to Dallas deserves an honourable mention but Nick Paul saves it from being much worse than it could have been.
For the montreal trade I do think that the Roy trade was awful but there was no way to make it much better, Roy demanded a trade publicly and said he would never play a game for the habs again, causing the return in the package to plummet. I think a better pick would be ryan mcdonagh for scott gomez.
Did anybody except the GM hear what Roy said ? The coach defenitly did not catch what was said because he shouted at roy and demanded to know later (allegedly). If nobody else heard it they could have propably just worked something else out (or take more time for such a big trade). Roy regreted it pretty quikly after the game and wanted to work something out but the habs organisation did not want to and simply traded him (allegedly).
Wow a couple of those teams later in the video are insanely lopsided... Naslund, Pronger.. Niedermayer pick is a nightmare for the Leafs. They've traded too many picks/prospects too early. The Rask-Raycroft trade is up there for sure. Great video guys!
Completely disagree with the Bruins 'bad trade', last time I checked Thornton hasn't won a Stanley Cup, and sure he put up points but the Bruins were allowed to develop Bergeron, Krejci, Lucic, Thomas, get Chara, while having the salary cap space to get Recchi to win the cup in 2011. They then developed Marchand and Pasternak, won the President's Trophy in 2014, 2020, 2023, have been in the playoffs more often then not, and not have a losing season since 2007. But I guess the Bruins make so few bad trades that this was their only choice lol.
i'd say stastny for wolanin/velischek or sundin for clark for the avs/nords. i'm not sure the luongo trade wasn't worse for NYI. yashin was at least good. but you need to get more than parrish and kvasha for luongo and jokinen. caps? forsberg for erat. miller was at least useful.
Blackhawks had two great goalies either way they would trade a hall of famer. For those who don't it was Ed Belfour. At the time Belfour was the top NHL goalie
Fairly sure that Toronto trade was nothing compared to them sending Rask to Boston for Raycroft. Rask helped Boston win multiple cups, and Toronto haven’t found a solid goalie until the last few years in Anderson.
rask hasnt won a cup as a starting goalie... boston won in 2011 with tim thomas.... chicago n la traded cup wins between 2012-2015 pittsburg won it the next two years, then washington stlouis and tampa so what cups did rask help boston win????
Boston’s worst trade has to be Ken Dryden to Montreal for Paul Reid and Guy Allen, two guys that never played a NHL game and Dryden went on to win a Con Smythe/Calder trophy/5 Vezina/6 Stanley cups in a bit less then 8 seasons. Totaling a ridiculous 258 wins in 397 regular season games a GAA 2.24 and SA% .922 in the 70’s is absolutely ridiculous.
was thinking about how many of these trades were due to “special” circumstances or personality clashes. Brett Hull wanted out of Calgary didn’t he? Winnipeg was facing a move to Arizona. That was a factor. Maybe there’s already a video noting players that wanted out?
Actually, the Flames had a shopping list for their run for the cup, which they won. They needed a backup goalie, which they ended up not needing, as Vernon was great, and a D-man, which they ended up needing greatly as Suter got hurt. Ramage played great and helped win the cup for Calgary. Fletcher knew how great Hull could be. He asked every one in the organization if they would make the trade, as he knew the price was high, and they all said yes.
During that time it have no cap space. The teams who have money have the best players. Like in the MBL... not a bad trade but have no money for the player
Ah yes the Roy trade of MTL, from what i heard since I was too young to watch hockey at that time was that the Canadiens management and coaching was awful during that time
The Flames KNEW what they were doing. This trade won the cup for Calgary. Cliff Fletcher was shoring up the defence obtaining Ramage after releasing an injury riddled Paul Reinhart. Calgary wanted to solidify their goaltending. The Calgary office KNEW Brett Hull was going to be develop. They were predicting Brett Hull would score 75 - 80 goals over the next 2 seasons but Brett Hull was not going to get there for the 1989 playoffs(as it turns out, Hull scored over 100 goals over that time) Calgary won their Cup. Brett Hull didn't win a Stanley Cup until 1999.
Exactly. For example, Calgary traded a young prospect in Hull for a couple of players they thought would put them over the top and help them win a cup… which they did. Would they make that trade again? Probably not, but the fact that Calgary used those acquisitions to win their only cup to this very day, certainly changes the ledger.
Im not sure what trade is worst for them but, I do not think the Kovy Trade was that bad for the Devils. They were 2 wins from winning the cup with him on their team and the guys they traded for him amounted to nothing. Losing Zach Parise for nothing hurt more as a Devuls fan. However hindsight is 2020 and in 2020 I wouldn't want Parises contract either. Its just a shame they couldn't pull off a few ot wins in games 1 and 2 of the SCF. Regardless the Trade for Kovalchuk did not negatively effect the Devils long term.
Rick Middleton was getting in trouble in New York City. He was inbolved with the wrong kinds of people. GM John Ferguson traded Middleton for Middleton 's own good. The Rangers were rebuilding and needed veteran experience that would also help scoring being reunited with Phil Esposito. The Hodge for Middleton trade doesn't belong in this video in the sense that Ferguson wasn't being bone-headed, he was making the best of a situation. Rick Middleton only blossomed because he was under the tutelage of Don Cherry. The Vegas trade records don't look good BUT...THEY WON THE STANLEY CUP !
Actually Calgary won that trade Rob Ramage was a huge reason why Calgary won the cup in 89😤. Bret Hull did excellent in the regular season. But is very meaningless if you get eliminated in the second round. Of the Stanly Cup playoffs

Loved seeing Murphy play in Detroit and also watch him with Mickey Redmond and the boys on Fox Sports Detroit.
I was a bit disappointed that they didn't even mention the tragedy of demitra's untimely death.
Quebec got a chest of treasures for Lindros!!!
The Flyers didn’t even get the best player in the trade. Plus the capital from that trade was a big reason they got Roy
Getting rid of Dione put us on track to get Stevie. I’m okay with that.
It would been nice to have both tho
Not getting rid of but losing him
Originally, the Roy trade was supposed to be traded for Owen Nolan and Stephane Fiset but Serge Savard, the man who proposed the trade got fired
It hurts
i think caps worst trade was when we gave up Phillip Forsberg
What makes the Jeff Carter trade even worse for Columbus is that they also traded their 8th overall pick.. Sean Couturier
Hmmm, how about when St. Louis sent Sergio Momesso, Cliff Ronning, geoff Courtnall, and Robert Dirk to the Canucks for Dan Quinn and Garth Butcher?
Ronning was poison in the dressing room, and a jerk on and off the ice. He never lasted more than a couple seasons anywhere he played.
@@hypasteve Rely? I didn't know that about Ronning. Of course one wouldn't think that he was big enough to be a prick.
@@hypasteve are you sure you aren't thinking of Matt Cooke?

Honourable mention for the Rangers: sending Mike Ridley and Kelly Miller to Washington for Bob Carpenter.
I'd also include 1996: Ray Ferraro, Ian Laperierre, Nathan Lafayette and Mattias Norstrom to LA for Jari Kurri, Marty McSorley and Shane Churla.
You could also make a case for the Dale Hunter trade (Caps sent Quebec their 1 that turned into Joe Sakic, yikes).
the Kovalchuk trade wasn't even bad. He came pretty close to getting them a cup
Then left to Russia unexpectedly and only left them with a shit ton of money to pay him until he’s old and gone. 💀
@@idontgivetkachuk And what piece given up would've taken them close to the Stanley Cup Finals?
@@idontgivetkachuk with his retiring they aren't paying. Can you research one thing
Trading Mats Sundin to Toronto by Quebec was a clear WHOOPS!
many folks forget Sundin was a Nordique first
Strangely enough Mats Sundin to Vancouver was a good thing for development of the sedins, he taught them about humility and professionalism in the nhl
Doug Gilmour also was included and had an impact helping Calgary win the cup
100%
Before it starts, I'll say sending Chelios to Detroit for some Tim Horton's coupons is my Blackhawks worst trade.
Thanks man! Also, sorry for the mispronunciations throughout the entire video in the beginning lmao... I got better in time 💀.
Daze could actually score consistently in an era when almost no one could. Poor guy was hurt a lot. Some goalies turn into GOATs, but most don’t. Having Chelios win Cups in Detroit would’ve been hard to watch as a Hawks fan
But have you had the Double Double?
Mikka Kiprusoff just might be the most underrated and under appreciated player in NHL history. The guy was one of the best goalies ever, and no one ever talks about him.
As a Flames fan he is my all time favorite!! I own his jersey too haha!
I would argue that dismantling the ‘55 cup team was a worse trade for the wings but Dionne was also a stupid trade
New Jersey Devils worst trade was never getting Miroslav Satan on the team. Missed out on what would have been the #1 selling Jersey of all time
😂😂😂😂
Wrong "devil" but, people not from New Jersey might think it's ok
@@rudypericolo I know what the new jersey devil is but that's not the point
Satan wound up winning the Stanley Cup… as a Penguin in 2009.
Islanders : they traded Luongo and Olli Jokinen to Florida for a few jokes as well...good ol' Mike Milbury
milbury has turned a lot of teams into garbage if ownership allowed him to do it . islanders had picks 3 ,4 ,5 of the 97 draft on their team , jokinen 3 , luongo 4 , and brewer, he also took that goalie dipietro over 19 y/o dany heatley in the draft in calgary . good thing nobody trusts his judgement anymore .
@@kokanee2010a ill never talk shit about dipietro because the guy was indeed good, the issue was that his body litterally gave up on him...but otherwise ye...olli jokinen, roberto luongo, zdeno chara, eric brewer, jason spezza just to mention these...
Dipietro was garbage he was awful in the playoffs and could barely had a 90 save pct.
@@alwillk bro get fkin real look at the trash teams he had...gtfo
Good stuff my man🔥 excited to watch
Thanks Rob!!
Ouch
Pronger trade was good. They had two early first rd pick but they messed up. The value was enough
Dino never won a Cup. Detroit won back-to-back after he was traded.
Yup! That's right. Pains me still 'cos I was a huge Dino fan.
Vladdy hurts even more.
Cant we sort of say this about joe Thornton? Boston would eventually win the cup... Even if its like 5 years after the trade and Thornton... Who actually thinks he can win a cup in toronto next year?
21:40 Actually, Dino lost the Cup in 1995.
For the Islanders that Devon Toews might be up there
For Hasek.. you count Dazé like he was the return but the real return was a 4th rd pick which is shitty but hawks drafted realllly well to get dazé.
also, they had Eddie Belfour in his prime. Hasek was young and probably would have left via free agency with how well he looked when he did play, so they got what they could for him.
Also it’s pronounced Dah-Zay not daze. Drives me nuts. Hasek would most definitely have left with the Hawks sticking with Belfour.
@@NinjatomPizzaPie In french it's Dazé. That's why.
@@DaleWeise99 yeah I was referring to the creator. Daze was one of the only bright spots for the hawks in my youth. Solid player.
Regarding Oilers,
Weight’s trade and Messier hurt them but, to me, the worst trade was ** Penner ** (originally wrote Lupul by mistake). offer sheet where they gave up first, second and third (Gardiner and Schultz) picks for a role player as well as paying him 5+ million /season.
I actually think Atlanta won that trade, Hossa was a better player.
Yeah... I mispronounced names... I get it.. Also Calgary won a cup thanks to that trade, but it still stings giving up Hull..
Lol yeah quite a few but still nice video
The constant mispronounced names honestly makes your videos super hard to watch bro.
Other ppl make the same mistakes... I don't get why I get sm heat for it.. Im busy wit college and work so its hard to nail everything 100% correctly... So sorry but I still hope u enjoyed..
The Flames GM said, "Brett Hull will score a ton of goals in the NHL."
But Wamsley and Ramage would help the Flames win the Stanley Cup.
@@idontgivetkachuk there will always be critics. Keep making vids and do ur thing. Eric Daze's name is pronounced DAH-zay, also.
Hasek is a bad trade in hindsight but the blackhawks did have Ed Belfour at the time
Eirik Karlsson for San Jose. Thats one of the worst deals ever.
also Darryl Sutter knew about the gem Kipper lurking in the Sharks system
The thing with the hawks and Dominick was that they already had a young goalie named Ed belfour who was both younger and had recently come off an amazing rookie season where he won both the Calder and vezina. He would win another vezina and is in the HOF. People forget that Dominick was over 28 when he joined the sabers. The only reason why Chicago would keep him was if their GM could see the future
For the wild it should be Brent Burns to the sharks
For Coyle and Setoguchi
Keep pushing man this channel is insanely underrated
I agree the Jets trading off Selanne wasn't wise. Same with Calgary trading Hull. Vancouver really did goof with getting rid of Neely too. Can you imagine him and Bure working together? Most of these trades were really bad, especially the Leafs. They've had a bad history of trading off potential draft picks. Not just Scott Niedermayer, but Bryan Trottier and Mike Bossy. Try imagining if they had barely made any of those mistakes. Might have won them at least one cup after 1967. Sad reality.
Carter for Voracek isn't a one sided trade at all, both guys are good. I don't get this one at all
The problem for Columbus was they didn't keep Carter.
Regarding the Blues trade, it worked out great! The chris pronger deal directly led to the Blues acquiring Binnington!
if kipper turning into M-E Vlasic is the worst trade on San Jose's behalf damn good on them......he was what a top line d man for a good 10 years and played like 15 or so there
The devils absolutely won the Kovalchuk trade...dude helped carry them to the finals in 2012.
Imagine receiving a hall famer in Lindros by basically trading off an all star team. ..and 15 million dollars. The 90s was a crazy time
For the montreal trade I do think that the Roy trade was awful but there was no way to make it much better, Roy demanded a trade publicly and said he would never play a game for the habs again, causing the return in the package to plummet.
They could have benched him for a few weeks amd let the sweepstakes start. Doing it the way they did was just bad business.
Wow a couple of those teams later in the video are insanely lopsided... Naslund, Pronger.. Niedermayer pick is a nightmare for the Leafs. They've traded too many picks/prospects too early. The Rask-Raycroft trade is up there for sure. Great video guys!
Thanks John!
Definitely the Sundin trade. Sundin was a youngster as Stastny was more towards the end of his career.
Five Points phoned this one in
Blackhawks had two great goalies either way they would trade a hall of famer. For those who don't it was Ed Belfour. At the time Belfour was the top NHL goalie
A lot of Quebec nordiques fans are pissed with this video.....
Sundin to Toronto would probably one of the worst trades by that team....
Brett hull didn't play well at all after he was drafted. Case in point he also didn't make team canada. After that he chose to join team USA
I would argue that the Seguin trade was worse for the Bruins than the Thornton trade.
2:33 as much as I hate the bruins the bear head jerseys NEED to make a comeback. Logo is so dope
was thinking about how many of these trades were due to “special” circumstances or personality clashes.
Yes. Doug Gilmour had been involved in a relationship and wanted out of Calgary. Just like Pronger wanted out of Edmonton after 1 season.
If the Jets weren’t relocating to Phoenix, the Selanne trade NEVER happens.
During that time it have no cap space. The teams who have money have the best players. Like in the MBL... not a bad trade but have no money for the player
Awesome video you make great content keep up the work
Jagr trade for Pittsburgh was worse than Naslund
Yeah but that was less of a trade and more of a pure salary dump.
3:18 he did explode for a 92 assist season!
Yup. That wasn't even tallying his goals that year.
Actually that Carter trade for Columbus is even worse. Flyers got 1st round pick that would become Sean Courtrier

Great video and not sure how you'd do it without making it an hour long but context is definitely important in a lot of these
