SAY NO to Gore-Tex as Rain Protection in Summer?

  • You've heard it before. Don't believe the hype!
I have three expensive Gore-Tex Jackets and a couple of "normal" affordable rain jackets. The Gore-Tex Jackets are several hundred dollars more expensive than your traditional rain wear.
I've tested the different rain gears for years and in my own humble opinion I don't see how the expensive Gore-Tex fabric perform better in summer rain?!
In my experience the opposite is true. Gore-tex is heavier, warmer and requires more maintenance. Not only is it 4 times as expensive but you also need to constantly re-apply expensive DWR treatment. (DWR is a chemical that repels the water)
If you are out on long trips the Gore fabric "wets out" easily and performs horrible. A "normal cheap" jacket will bead the water WITHOUT using DWR treatment and perform flawlessly over a multi-day backpacking trip.
In the Summer i keep just a t-shirt under a rain jacket. If I'm too physical active and its hot outside I'll soak inside and outside regardless what type of jacket i use, and end up taking the jacket off all together. I find Gore-Tex to perform no better here.
On the other hand, when it comes to winter Activities I would prefer a stronger fabric with better quality seams and zippers. In these severe conditions is where a high quality Gore-Tex jacket makes sense.
    What's your experience?

There's no reason to wear a hard shell in California unless it's below 50 Fahrenheit, raining really hard, or very windy. Alpha SV is the most weatherproof hard shell Arcteryx makes - you could wear that jacket in -20f weather with blowing wind, with the right layering. Complaining about it not breathing on an active walk in 65f drizzle is like complaining about a race car not having air conditioning.

+Sean Ferris I agree.. thats why I wear Outdoor Research Helium 2. This jacket was bought when I lived in Norway and backpacking in the snow. This was not a review of Alpha SV in California, but rather the Gore-Tex membrane in general. It wears off during heavy rain, and when you don't have the luxury of re-applying the DWR, it gets uncomfortable.

its all about the temperature. Breathability needs a temperature differential of about at least 15°. The air next to your skin is about 30° Celsius. That means the outside temperature has to be at least under 15° Celsius for breathability to work. In warm conditions you simply cant have waterproof and breathability at the same time. Thats the important Information you didnt cover.

I think a lot of jackets and materials can protect you from the outside rain, but the real problem when hiking or biking is the sweat that gets you wet from the inside. You could insulate the jacket with candle wax like i saw in some videos that they waterproof shoes or shoes covers, but you will stay like in a plastic trashbag. So i guess breathability should be all brands priority, and i don't care about brand names, just give me what i need to stay dry as long as i pay hard cash for it.

The new gore tex pro fabric is awesome. Ive just bought the latest Haglöfs Roc Spirit. It transports moisture very well and keep me cool. I can stay inside my house with base layer merino wool, mid layers with a synthetic shirt and a fleece shirt and then the Haglöfs on top of all that and i dont get warm and itchy. It also moves very well with the body and repells water as good as it did new. Its about 1year old with 5x 3 day hikes. Cost me 200euro but its around 450euro when not on SALE. Running fullspeed uphill in pouring rain and stay dry both from sweat and water, is awesome :)
If any of your membrane clothing starts to soak in water just wash them gently, hang dry then tumble or hot air room it to reactivate the membrane.
Ofcourse a normal rainjacket will perform better. But you sweat like way too much if you dont have a ventilating fabric. If you pay 600usd/450euro you should learn to maintain it and not expect it to just work after beating it hike after hike/climb.

Hmm I somewhat agree with your assessment. Usually when I go backpacking and the forecast looks clear, I tend to go with those 2 layer jackets like the marmot precip. If it shows rain for quite sometime, I'll bring my 3layer goretex jacket. If I'm bushwhacking it, I'll also generally bring my goretex jacket due to the durability of it. Now that some of the 2 layer manufacturers are including pit zippers, I'm more inclined to bring the 2 layer even if the forecast looks sour.
Snow wise, I always bring my goretex.

and another thing: about arcteryx. there are lots of different brands which have the production cheaper than arcteryx has. You can buy gore-tex jacket less then 200 bucks on a discount for example

The jacket will wet out eventually. You need to re-activate the DWR. You can do that by washing the jacket. After washing make sure the jacket is clean and dry (not soapy). Put the jacket in the dryer on low heat for 20-mins. This method is suppose to re-activate the DWR bringing back its repellency. Feel free to verify with Arcteryx if you don’t believe me.

Hey, Ur on my wavelength. I'm a postman in London and slowly but surely realising vortex jackets are useless. They are too easily defeated and have too many flaws. They aren't breathable after 20 mins. Friction to the outer surface ruins it. So for my work carrying a bag on shoulder and a bundle of mail ruins the top surface after 20 hrs of work.
Dam. I just hate them. Full plastic with a few strategic vents is vastly superior.
I'm now looking for a good hard-wearing plastic poncho.
Any help/advice for me is welcome.

Try walking / biking in a Primaloft insulated jacket!
A insulated jacket ( even Down) breathes much better than these way overated schells, the block the wind while keeping you warm, and dry your body vere quickly, I nowedays allmost exclusively use them sometimes when its very cold with a microfleece under them, when the rain is getting heavier I put a very cheap nylon windbreakar aka rainchell over them ( even riding my scooter in heavie downpoor) this works much better!

Goretex pro technology has changed since this jacket was launched. It is now air-permeable as well as moisture vapor transmitting. People say the only true breathability is air permeability and not moisture vapor transmission. All other GoreTex products are not air permeable (to my knowledge). Other air permeable membranes are Event and Polartec Neoshell.
It’s a weird thing to say a product is worse just because the DWR has worn off on one of them...

You said you got the jacket in Norway and now it's wetting out. How many years ago did you get it? Is it possible that you need to wash it to help revive the DWR?

  • @schlooonginator1227
    @schlooonginator1227 7 років тому +2

    I agree.
Every Gore Tex I have tried simply does not breath enough and you will get sweaty.
Lets be honest, Gore Tex is marketed to wards athletic and sporty folks. I just don't see it in much street clothing type clothes.
Yet, I think it may be best for people who are NOT active because if you do anything active it willl overwhelm Gore Tex.
I think this guy is on the money when recommending regular rain wear but to be specific I think he means justa good wind shell with great DWR because some completely non breathable stuff in categorized as rain wear.
I live on Vancouver Island which gets a decent amount of rain yet in my experiance I find that wearing wool or fleece and a good shell is way better than high end waterproof breathables.
Out of all the shells I have used I am most impressed with a pair of MEC cycling pants that are water resistant with somekind of membrane but itsa bit stretchy and states is not compleley waterproof. I use them mountain biking, they were about $70 and I am completely dry in wet rides. A pair of actual water proof breathable pants are easily double that price and not nearly as effective.
Save your money and get a good basic shell they are lighter, breathe and cheap/

  • @NJ-zi9lr
    @NJ-zi9lr 4 роки тому

Ditch any shell that relies on DWR treated face material. It's over. There are alternatives, Columbia's Outdry really works as a straight swap, and then there's the Pile/Pertex approach which has a huge following here in the UK.

  • @Jin-Ro

I have Ex Armed forces Gore-tex, top & bottoms, as used by the Royal Air Force. I ride a motorbike in _all_ weathers. I can't say I've ever got wet with it. I stick it in the tumble dryer once a month to revive the waterproofness, and that's the only treatment it gets.
The other explanation could be that designer brands are out to maximise their profits, whereas the Ministry of Defence don't Retail. The price of retail Gore-tex is pretty insane.
If you want the RAF Gore-tex, you can find it on ebay.co.uk for £50 ($65), that's for the Top and Bottoms. Any colour you like as long as it's RAF Blue :)

That means it's waterproof but not as breathable as I wish to be! So I m searching for a good raincoat jacket but much more breathable!!! Kilpi Hurricane M ( 20.000 mm w. prf - 30.000 breathable) it s a good choice! So for protection from heavy rain or snowstorms a gore text membrane is the only solution but for hiking in such extreme conditions it's not the best choice ( you get sweaty) and you always have to carry a second layer !

My Haglöfs has the same issues equipped with Gore-Tex top of the line 3 layer fabric. It gets wet spots. They told me impregnate it for better performance which is a joke as you can chemically treat any textile to give it DWR properties. Membranes by themselves should do the job. Budget jackets from Clumbia with Omni-Dry outperform Gore-Tex. North Face Futurelight is the most sophisticated membrane at the moment but I am sure there are new Japanese membranes being developed at the moment that will revolutionize waterproofnes together with breathability.

This is interesting, one of my friends agrees with you. However I have several breathable waterproof jackets, and I recently bought a Lafuma Jaipur Gore-tex. Then I tried out the breathability by excercising in each one. I noticed, that the 10K/10K MILO TABO jacket got uncomfortable after half as much time as the Lafuma. Surely breathability is a great thing in the later. Then I opened the pitzips on the MILO which was 1/2 price of the Lafuma. The difference was not great in breathability so the performance between the two jackets was very similar, even if the later one cost double. So, the moral of the story? Breathability is very important, even more if you can vent your heat. I recommend a good wicking base layer and open zips in warm rain. Of course every sensible person moves to take shelter after 1-2 hours of rain, even more in a thunderstorm. So, in my mind Gore-tex is an overkill in waterproofness (in normal rain but does it resist a thunderstorm?), get Polartech Neoshell or Event, or just a poncho in warm rain. In a storm get a shelter. Some people on the net say that if you want a 100% waterproof solution with 100% breathabiltiy, get an umbrella...

You can get away rockin' a plastic bag poncho in the warm rain. Gore-Tex® gear really shines when the weather ranges from 3°C to -3°C with wet snow & wind - icy, foggy, melt-freeze conditions that coat all surfaces in rime frost & ice. In those conditions my zippers freeze up after 3 hours & my pack straps are unadjustable & coated in ice. In colder conditions

  • @z1522
    @z1522 9 років тому +4

Right on here - also, think about it, really - breathability is a marketing ploy, because if you exercise hard in a tee shirt, guess what, it gets wet, and I guarantee it breaths 100 times better than any shell garment. Temp. gradients and the presence of a liquid water coating the outer cooler side effectively thwart any transfer of water as vapor from inside a shell. The linings help keep a thin buffer to avoid the clammy sensation but make no difference otherwise. Gore has the marketing budget to sell, but better materials are around now; even so, all are fragile and must be regularly maintained, kept clean, and with DWR restorer as needed. Old urethane coated things worked fine, but reeked like dead fish, and still leaked once the coating wore, so nothing's perfect.

A hardshell Goretex jacket is too heavy for warm weather use. It's best used in cold weather conditions like the fall or better in winter against the snow, slush or sleet over a fleece/down jacket. The latter is where the hardshell Goretex jacket should do well.
For the warmer months, a basic, less expensive rain jacket, not Goretex, is better due to its lighter weight and should be able to withstand showers and even downpours.

Even if you wore nothing when it's not raining you get wet from sweat. Think about it. Goretex performs like no other. I've had many cheap shells and tried all kinds of things. There may be better materials our there, however, the Gore Tex is inside the jacket so the face fabric wetting out is not a sign that the Gore Tex isn't working. I agree it'd be nice if it never stopped beading water though.

He may not be impressed by Gore-Tex, but what would he recommend as an alternative? If you hike in the rain, you need something waterproof, and Gore-Tex still seems to be as good or better than anything else. Also, you are aware that DWR has to be periodically applied to rain jackets?

Oh, and have your hero Andrew Sturka hike through my neck of the woods (Western Washington State) for a couple of months (I suggest March and April.) Have him hike across the Olympic Peninsula. We'll see if he doesn't wear Gore-Tex or some other waterproof clothing.
See, I'm quite sure this fuck does wear Gore-Tex (or its functional equivalent,) but he talks shit about it to get clicks and make himself seem like an independent thinker and myth buster.
But these days climbing and hiking are very popular and hip so everybody claims to be an expert on them, even this guy from Massachusetts (who tries to pass himself off as from Colorado).

why spend all of that money in the first place... the military has GREAT gortex jackets... theyre more durable than the arcteryx sv... the zippers are larger and tougher made... the bn only drawback to the military gear is weight... but im not a gram counting weenie... i just want a jacket that i know wont have a failure on a long distance hike... you can get the full body suit parka and pants... for $200 instead of the $1000 to $1200 youd pay for a comparable set from arcteryx... and the military gear is rated for 40° to -60° with proper under layers...

Not sure why your testing the Alpha SV in the conditions your testing in? I would have though it obvious that the jacket would have wet out due to it being way to warm for that particular jacket. Its designed for much colder environments. That said Gore Tex has never been a good option for warm environments due to its design. It's always been a much better option for colder temperatures with the likes of E-vent (lighter variants) or Pertex Shield and jackets more designed to be water resistant than water proof being better for warmer seasons.

To test this, just spit on the garment in the store. If it comes back and hits you in the face, you know it's good waterproofing. I had gore Tex pants when I learned snowboarding and they saved my butt. It wears out eventually, but worth the money for something like that. Once you can stay on your feet, it isn't needed, but learning to snowboard without those pants was miserable.

Arcetyrx is rediculous, REI eVent *anything* , is the best deal out there, eVent is unbelievable, REI makes awesome quality jackets, the price is way below their value, I just bought a Rhyolite and tested it's breathability today, it looked like it might rain so I wore it and even though it didn't I kept it on to test how hot or sweaty I would get, I was mowing greens on a golf course, then raking WET sand, and lots of it, a VERY strenuous job, and then mowing a large area with a regular push mower, not self propelled. I kept it on the whole time, the temps were from 50* to 60-63* about, with 69% humidity. At two points, after a half hour pushing wet sand, and after 15 minutes pushing the lawn mower, I got a bit warm and opened the neck and pocket vents, at those same points I felt sweaty on my liner shirt ( I had a fitted combat style t shirt under my Antigua moisture wicking company golf shirt and then the Rhyolite) after only moments, literally less then a couple minutes, I felt completely dry, and while I had those times getting hot and a little sweaty, I would have had them with no tops on at all, and would have stayed sweaty more likely without anything on. Never did it feel "steamy" or wet inside of the jacket. I have had lots of experience with Gore-Tex, and I can tell you right now I would have died if the jacket was Gore-Tex. Supposedly the new Pro is finally, actually, breathable, but Gore-Tex has claimed forever they were breathable and they are not, I don't like it for even super cold weather, you still get soaked in sweat and over heat. I am a true believer in eVent after that test today, I will never buy Gore-Tex again, and Arcetyrx can shove their phantom brand value right up their asses, they are no different then any other product extravagantly priced just for the sake of it, underarmor sweatshirts, pxg golf clubs for example, titleist pro V1 balls, etc ... just to name a few at hand at the moment, but every type of product has that one or two brands that try to fool the customer, or play on their egos, by placing value in their products that only exists by it being priced higher. It will always happen, it's human nature, but I will always buy what's best for my needs, and I'll always look for the best value per dollar, but I'll spend what I need to on the best functionality wise first, and things like 700$ Arcetyrx bring nothing more to the table then a 100-150$ comparable product, and with a better membrane at that. Good video, thanks!

All goretex products I have just fail in almost all situations. As he said, breathability is a joke, you will get wet inside and out no matter what. Goretex works well for snow, nothing more than that, I've tried goretex in Manaus under heavy tropical rain, it got wet several times in less than ten minuts, just the way from the bus to the door of my job... and shoes? Seriously? Unless you're not doing activities in snow, you better buy a full leather boot and treat with Nikiwax spray, because all goretex shoes I bought, builded up a thin layer of moisture inside and added no more than a poor breathability to the shoe

Agreed, in part, I have both Gore-Tex Pro (not classic Gore-Tex or Active) and Neoshell jackets and the Neoshell jacket is easily the most breathable, but it also sacrifices some waterproofness when compared to GTX-Pro for longer exposures. if I'm likely to be stuck in atrocious weather for extended periods, I still take the GTX-Pro hardshell over the Neoshell. They have slightly different applications in my mind - both awesome but for slightly different things/environments.

I have owned a couple of very expensive Gore Tex Jackets. Their very waterproff when new but if you have to clean it or even wipe a mark off with soapy water , the water repellent always disappears leaving the jacket completely useless against rain etc. I always have to spray something like Scothguard over it to make it waterproof again. You could make a cheap rain jacket just as water repellent by spraying it with a water repellent spray. Gore tex is very overrated in my experience. The emperors new clothes.

    • @awesomelife3710
      @awesomelife3710 3 роки тому

I don’t see you mention anything about following the instructions that come with Gore-Tex jackets. You know: “Wash in 40 degree water. Line-dry. Once completely dry, place in drier and tumble for 20 minutes to reactivate water repellent feature.” The fact you make zero comments about this makes me doubt you ever took proper care of your own Gore-Tex, thus invalidating your opinion.

@@awesomelife3710 Washing or treating a goretex jacket only helps the DWR coating to bead water, not the actual goretex layer. Just because the outer jacket material begins to 'wet-out' doesn't affect the waterproofness of the inner Gore-Tex membrane.

Hype, because nobody can repeat your experiment because your report isn't objective. I have worn a Moutain hardware Gortex XCR jacket for years without washing it before it needed DWR but I have just worn it in the city and live in the UK.
Your report is completely misleading and probably hyped.
I just wanted a jacket that would keep me dry in all conditions and not have to worry about which way the wind was blowing in the occasional rain storm that we get in the UK.

      1. Goretex needs a difference in temperatur of at least 16°C to transfere the moisture efficientely to the outside.
      2. most people do not know how to care for their goretex clothing... I know this because I work at a Mammut store. You have to wash your goretex and iron it to reactivate the DWR. If you do not wash your goretex clothing sweat will collect on/in the mambrane-> no breathability + the salts in your sweat can be abrasive and damage the seam-tapes and the membrane.
      3. after about 5-6 times in the washing-machine you will have to use a spray to make the outerlayer water resistent again.

You are completely correct. I have Arc’teryx Zeta AR 3L Gore-Tex jacket. It wets out in about 30 min then water seeps through the layers soaking my clothing (even after washing, applying DWR and drying). Gore-Tex definitely does not perform as promoted, it’s useless.
Several hiking stores have told me that the DWR chemicals have “recently” changed due to their toxicity. Whilst that’s great, they no longer perform making the jacket useless.
I’m still looking for a jacket that is waterproof, might have to switch to a poncho.

That's not how Gore Tex works. The DWR is on the outer material whereas the Gore Tex membrane is laminated inside of that so the Gore Tex is still waterproof and the part that wets out is the face fabric. Anyway, you may not like the face fabric which is fine, but I don't think you know much about Gore Tex.
