Illan Rubin is such a talented drummer, everything he plays is super tasteful and musical. As a multi-instrumentalist, he is always aware of how the drums fit into a musical context. I've learned so much from this playing. Now he is getting the recognition he deserves for being so good. Look at all the artists he tours with!! Reverb please keeping making this videos with Illan!!
I'm pretty sure those terms were invented by Ned Flanders.
Like this reply if you secretly wish all drummers would nickname these rudiments "P Diddies."
Hi-paradiddly-i neighborino!
4:36 I thought he said barafuddledoo then I realized he said “very fun to do” 😄 I’ve got flandereeze in my head(-dle diddle doo).
" by gosh hi ( hat ) diddle de do ray me neighbor " !
"Do it with your weaker hand as well."
Lol, Ilan doesn't have a weaker hand.
Listen to him on The Perfect Drug live...just an insanely talented drummer. Amazing talent! 😯🔥😯
This dude is one of my absolute favs
I really enjoy the way Ilan speaks and breaks this material down. He's incredibly clear and direct in his method of teaching it.
He's old school. No double bass no gimmics. Just some solid rudiments and a wonderful creative vision.
Indeed. He makes a lot with the "basics". Of course any jazz drummer is that but he does it with a very solid hit.
One of the best rudiments vids online for sure. And saying as a drum teacher. Recommended to watch him on 0.75 when he plays in case your trying to work while ...
Love hearing the fundamentals applied to the set. Wish my old teacher, Tom Flood, had shown me that 45 years ago (he took lessons from Henry Adler, so was certainly no slouch!)
Men, what a tone from that drum! Ilan's killing it as usual.
Those drums sound so good!
Omg i love the sound of that kit!
More rudiments on the kit with Ilan, please! I love the way his drum solos sound
Brilliant warm up. It’s what I use now. Legend at 25...hard work and oodles of talent. It’s not fair. I have no talent but work hard.
Wow Ilan thanks so much!! Such a great practice set. I am obsessed playing it so much that I found another rudiment set to add to it. It’s called a Paraddidle Diddle Diddle :) This enables you to go directly from your right hand to left visa vera. Sounds very cool when you add single paradiddles in between. Try it out if you haven’t already, Cheers!!!
keep the Ilan videos coming!!
Love when you apply rudiments to the drum set! Realize some of the 40 aren't as applicable on a kit but would love to see you demonstrate the ones you feel are most useable (thumbs up!)
you are a great instructor my friend!
Great vid!!
Rubin explains this so well! Time to shed
as someone who's been a nine inch nails diehard since about 2001, nine inch nails absolutely hit the jackpot when they got ilan in the band. anyone coming in after josh freese would have been a joke, but holy SHIT did ilan step up to the plate and hit the ball into outer fucking space.
Is any one else irrationally distracted by the fluttering white tag in the bottom right corner
I thought that was the ASMR component.
Can't unsee now
yes
I am now
fuuuuuuuuck did you have to mention that
I love the reverb at the end of the snare...
Remember him from fenix tx. Pretty solid back in the days
holy shit i missed ilan so much lol. his stewart copeland videos werent enough
He's also done a couple Bonham lessons with us if you're a Led Zeppelin fan. :)
I like how he's enhancing the accents with camera shake. That's quite fitting.
You are amazing!!!
Wow bad ass good job !
Great example of using Paradiddle’s on the kit! Diddle Diddle sounds like a Budweiser Commercial !
I could listen to Ilan say paradiddle diddle all day.
The verse drum beat on NIN - Wish is essentially a Paradiddle with a solid kick on the down beat behind it.
Only waited over a year for another Reverb video featuring Ilan!
Pat Flanigan a year! Holy macaroni that’s flown by.
Jamis Ins well i may have missed one, but ever since I saw his first one I’ve been waiting for another! He’s got such great chops!!
I bet drummers can do the head pat tummy rub thing so easily.
On those para diddle diddle exercises you can also use a single paradiddle to force the alternate sticking to begin with the left-hand if you're not comfortable with a triple paradiddle to make the rotation. This is what I use as a warm-up exercise, a sticking I learned in seventh grade band.
Waw ilan rubin, remind me of angels and airwaves
Master class
Is that Soul Glow on your hair?! Amaizing work as usual
Wish I could play like him
I like how the camera shakes when he plays. Question for Ilan: How do you protect your hands when Trent throws mic stands at you?
Another fun one is doing 2 double paradiddles then a single paradiddle which will switch to a left hand lead then just keep repeating to switch back and forth. I think I got it from a Tommy Igoe video.
Off to try this - at about a quarter the speed
For a split second, I thought that was Andy Martin in the thumbnail
Damn... Thought it was Bonham in the very beginning
In a couple of Ilan's other videos, he runs through classic Bonham beats: ua-cam.com/video/IGrVtj1zWF0/v-deo.html
To Ilan,Bonham is greatest drummer of all times. For me too.
also GUYS...this guy is a multi instrumental guy.guitar vox and bass.another freak.just like MR.BRIAN TICHY!!!!
Hes such a boss. *flicks hair out of eyes..
Still a monster. Hopefully he's releasing some new music further down the line, it's been a while.
New Regime are in the studio 🤙
@@kaz85 Yay! Thanks for telling me
Angels and Airwaves are also in the studio now.
welp, today I learned what a paradiddle is.
Is that the vocal mic picking up that crazy room reverb, after he finishes and starts speaking?
the audio of the drums is compressed, so when he stops playing you hear the resonance of the drums without being compressed
yeah they're switching from the drum mics to his vox mic, which is uncompressed so when he starts talking while the drums still ringing we're hearing it through his mic
I kinda thought his warmup would be just playing Wish.
Exactly what I thought
"Its pretty boring"
"Feel rdiculous to say"
"Its the stupidiest thing, i dont know who came up with that"
I really enjoyed how he is pissed about those things hahaha.
Awesome teaching by the way.
what is that echoing sound you hear after he plays? is it a mic
I think it's just the vocal mic picking up the brief drum ring as they switch from the drum mic back to the vocal mic.
I have one question! what would be the advantages of using paradiddles instead of single stroke rolls for the patterns shown in this video? I understand what Ilan says in the sense that they help develop your "weaker" hand and all that, but from a musical and technical point of view, It seems to me that all this would be easier to play using single stroke rolls. Thanks!
The diddles allow more time for the next hit to be accented and for your hands to move around the kit.
jconblack there are so many advantages it’s ridiculous mate. I play open handed now because of Simon Philips so when IR joined my favorite band (NIN) and I saw him paying like I do (try to) I was delighted. Saw h8m live last June in London. Nuclear was the word that came to mind then and still is. Monstrously powerful with that kit and his style...behind anything I’ve heard in all the hundreds of gigs I went to...including other NIN gigs.
I think it totally depends on the player, their preferred style or genre.and their skill level. Imho, single strokes can be just as musical and complex especially with directional sticking or Gergo Borlai's "limb-breaker". However, being able to deploy both styles at will is the art of masters. Just my .02
Guppusmaximus spot on. “The art of masters”. I Like that.
Guppusmaximus...I just commented on IR’s visible hand (his right on my iPad screen at least). It’s absolutely motionless. Like an engine is 8n built that runs from the rebounds. That’s what I’m taking from this above thee actual lesson.
Similar thing to what the drummer from the group GAS does.
Para-paradiddle: RLRLRR LRLRLL
Paradiddle-diddle: RLRRLL LRLLRR
It's not stupid, it's what it is. As for who named them that, the name was in use among regimental drummers as early as the 1700s. So who knows?
What size or those hi hats ?
16" A Avedis
Better than Travis Barker teaching (enseñando)
4:37 Ilan has a weak hand?
Paradiddle diddle😂🤣
Natural Born Teacher
This guy is the emo version of Tommy Igoe 😂
Let's think of a 'smart' name for a paradiddle diddle
Ilan must get up every morning, and pray thanks to whatever God he believes in that Trent Reznor came calling when he did. Otherwise his career would have been blown to shit along with his ex Lostprophets band mates, thanks to the actions of Ian Watkins
id rather just watch him play than talk
This man is not real…
havent cared about nin drummer since chris vrenna
