      Lighting and heating products, like the aggressive way people come at others about lighting and heating when not all these MUST do tell in your face rules have any backing behind why. yes some things we have learned isn't the best and as keepers we should change when things are proven to be beneficial but man so many people just parrot what they hear on fb.

      BIGGEST imo-if you don't take your reptile to the vet regularly, if you take care of any tiny issue at home (with good direction) or if you don't worm your reptiles regularly then you are the devil of keepers in so many parrot repeating reptile groups 🙄. Like exotic vets can be great but many of us started in the hobby before these were even an accessible thing.

      Don't use lights for nocturnal species like ball pythons or leopard geckos and they need UTHs. Fortunately that is going away quickly but the idea that they need it dark and the natural day/night cycle in your house is enough is silly. The sun exists, there is no avoiding it. The tops of hides, rocks, and branches heat up during the day so they can get their "belly heat" in the dark that way, just like they would in nature.

      Some temperature keeping methods- my two snakes have only been happy with me giving them rather lower ambient tempts inside their enclosures. It only works, I think, because they *do* have warm burrows where they can access heat, but they don't stay in them, they explore around in the enclosure from a side that's in the eighties F to the side that's in the seventies. My Ball Python still seeks out his "cool" hide half the time. But during parts of the night or after he eats, he's often in his warmed burrow (it's on a thermostat of course). He's healthy, slams his meals, and digests nicely, but a lot of people would say I'm doing this wrong. I tried giving him warmer temps and he just hid in the cool hide and wouldn't come out. This... seems to work.

    I kept my late leopard gecko Diego on sand for at least 95% of her 23+ year life (I got her as an adult) with the remainder of her years spent on bioactive soil and she was FINE in both. But I felt judged if I mentioned this to other reptile enthusiasts or pet store people so I kept my mouth shut. I also DIDN'T feed her daily; I released 12 gut loaded crickets into her enclosure biweekly. Once she lost her ability to hunt I switched to tong feeding her various larvae; when this failed, I got her one of those (not) escape-proof bowls and made sure that there were always mealworms available to her with a little bit of dry oatmeal in the bowl to keep the mealies alive. Again my point though: she lived to be *23+* years on loose substrate like she would have found in the wild.

    Multispecies communal setups are great with the right animals, but they require research. Back in the 1990s, a friend and I both kept large enclosures that had green anoles, fire bellied toads, and a couple species of newts. These animals worked well together, and they lived for many years. They are good choices because they aren't too sensitive to environmental conditions, they occupy different spaces, and they don't view each other as prey. The anoles climbed around in the plants, the toads liked places near the water's edge, and the newts spent most of their time in deeper water. It is a good idea to provide plenty of hiding places in locations that each of the animals likes, i.e. a lot of plant growth for the anoles, hides on land but near the water or in shallow water for the toads, and small underwater caves for the newts. Also, it is necessary to make sure that food gets placed into good locations for all of the animals. Anoles and fire bellied toads are potentially food competitors, but this can be managed by placing some food in the plants and some on the ground. Back in the day, it wasn't unusual for pet stores to keep these animals together. Of course, pet stores don't always know what they are doing, but in this case, they found, possibly by accident, that these animals were compatible with each other. I've been out of the hobby for a while. I wonder if it is still common for people to keep these particular animals in communal set-ups, or if problems have since been discovered. If I decided to do this again, I would check on the current knowledge in the community first.

I thought it would be immensely difficult because my leo is not the most handleable but it was super easy! I scooped him up and let him sit in some shallow warm water for a few minutes and then I just gently got his toes. It scared him a little but nothing crazy so if you're having to help a scaly baby shed for the first time just be calm and confident they trust you more than you think even the ones that arent handleable 😁

    Would like to say that this is an awesome video! I own 3 snakes, and I do have to move one to her “feeding chamber” when she eats. She’s a milk snake and she possesses one brain cell. She would rather hide than come out and eat. I’ve tried socializing her and she just is not about it. Getting her out to eat is far less stressful for her since I put her in a tub with her FT mouse, put the lid on and cover her with a blanket. While she eats, I do enclosure maintenance. When she’s done, she’s SO SPICY so I open the lid, she bites me, and then she goes back to her enclosure. No issues at all. My bull snake will eat anywhere, he’s like the antithesis of Sam from Green Eggs and Ham. He will eat any time, here or there, he will eat everything everywhere. Then there is my ball python, who is finally done with her food strike. Unsure why I said all of this here, as if random internet strangers care, but here we are 🤷🏻‍♀️

    What’s dangerous about promoting cohabbing of any kind (ESPECIALLY leopard geckos) is that it will give people the idea to try it with incorrect husbandry. Only expert keepers should try it who are experienced with providing microclimates, multiple basking spots, proper lighting, etc. the average keeper won’t be knowledgeable enough to provide an enclosure like that. Cohabbing shouldn’t be a mainstream reptile keeping practice. A lot of effort also needs to go into understanding behaviors and stress indicators of the reptiles who are cohabbed

    • @vicekillx
      @vicekillx Рік тому +5

      Yup i was gonna say this. A newbie will put a ball python in with their corn snake in a 75 gal bc they heard about a guy who gave a burmese python an entire room of his house with a colony of day geckos lol. I always tell people if you don't have the time, money, and space for two separate enclosures, you definitely don't have enough time, space, or money to get an enclosure big enough to cohab. same species or otherwise

    • @idiotically-everything
      @idiotically-everything Рік тому +4

      Yup. Generally cohabbing isn't recommended as not many novice keepers have the experience, skill and space to cohab two non social reptiles. Easier to have two seperate enclosures for your leopard geckos than this massive and elaborate enclosure just so that the leopard geckos won't fight

    • @vicekillx

      I run a 501c3 reptile rescue in Virginia, and I agree with this statement. I have had so many newbies think that they can adopt 2 or 3 leos from me, and throw them in a 40 gallon enclosure, it'll be fine. I just had a person reach out to me last week, she was cohabbing her two (not my rescues) in a 20 gallon, they attacked each other and she wanted our rescue to pay the vet bills to rehab them. I guess Petco told her that as long as they weren't two males, it was fine. She had a male and female, and the female tore the male up. Or I get people that have had adult bearded dragons in less than 120 gallons together, they were fine up until one day... I think cohabbing should be left to the people who know what to look for when monitoring behavior.

  • @alexiswilson4186
    @alexiswilson4186 Рік тому

    I have been waiting ages for someone to make a video about cohabing different species, most beginner reptiles don’t seem like a good idea to do this with but there are several insectivore snakes that I think would cohab well with other animals. And there’s different size options too since a lot of insectivore snakes are a smaller size, you might could keep ringneck snakes with some smaller lizards for example and rough green snakes with a medium-large sized frog. And with a big enclosure, you could have more than two species for sure. I think too many people see reptiles as viscous predators that will eat anything in their path- not even people who hate reptiles but even their own keepers who own multiple different reptiles. It definitely can be done as long as it’s done with the correct amount of care and effort and I think yelling at people that they MUST limit themselves to one animal per tank at all times prevents people from doing their own research and discovering interesting facts about the animal they’re keeping, and of course it keeps some people not wanting to have reptiles at all because they think one animal per space is boring and to some people it is. People need more access to information on cohabing correctly and I think it’ll provide a lot of opportunity not just to make individual tanks more interesting but also an opportunity to grow the hobby and have another side of the reptile keeping community.

  • @Nopholom
    @Nopholom Рік тому +3

    I'm new to/not quite in the reptile hobby yet, so naturally co-habbing is definitely something I'll avoid until I'm a more experienced keeper, and even then it is something I'd have to do a LOT of research into before trying, but it does baffle me when people immediately go "no, not allowed" even with clear examples and repeats of "do your due diligence" "do your research" "plan carefully" etc, and then throw in the "new inexperienced keepers", as if we're not sat here doing all this research first, desperate to give our future reptiles etc the best lives possible.
    People who are going to cohab dangerously or keep things in too small an enclosure, aren't going to be going to places like WWR or other parts of reptile youtube looking for advice, or affirmation that they're Fine to do things the way they do them, they're certainly not going to get that from this video, some will learn and go "oh maybe I should look more into this" others are going to dismiss it because they don't care they just want the cool spotty lizard, and you won't be able to get through to them with a sledgehammer.

    • @c5365
      @c5365 Рік тому +1

      This reminds me...every time anyone asks about cohab options, you get two responses: 1 - No! It cannot be done! 2 - If you have to ask for info, you're not ready to cohab!
      It sort of creates a weird catch-22 where people who are 'ready' to cohab need to already know how, but also need to already know that information without every actually learning about it from anyone else, and discussing the very idea with others is taboo! Very weird. Of course, they are probably just trying to keep idiots from trying it, but dogmatically repeating the same thing over and over again does not forward anyone's knowledge nor the hobby in general. Aquarists are lightyears ahead on this, as they regularly mix species of fish and inverts and actually have knowledge on how to do so safely. That knowledge didn't come from nowhere.
      I know no one ever thinks of it this way, but technically a lot of reptiles are already cohabbed with different species without a second thought - mainly isopods and springtails in bioactives! Not one considers that a cohab, but it's technically true. There was a long time where bio-active enclosures were unheard of, but now they are becoming more and more commonplace. There's still a few diehard staunch opponents of bioactive who claim that sterile tubs with paper towels and nothing else is still the best way. I suspect the reptile hobby will advance in the coming years to include greater knowledge, and safe cohab combos may be part of it.

    I agree. If my beardie for example has a piece of stuck shed on her mouth and she is in a calm mood and it's ready to come off I'm going to take it off for her. I won't stress her out or take skin that isn't ready to come off. It's common since like you said. Not that she needed my help this often but I've probably pulled off at least a little bit of skin off of her at least 20 times now and wow she's still alive and doing well so clearly it isn't harming her what so ever! But I won't argue this point with no it all's. Someone would likely say if you're helped her 20 times then something is wrong with her. No it isn't that. It's just that I handle her a lot so there has been numerous opportunities for me to grab a piece of dry ready to fall off skin and I do, so it doesn't just end up all over my furniture ECT.

Considering the size difference between the Boa and the frogs aren't you concerned about a frog becoming well a pancake under the weight of the boa if they don't happen to move out of the way when the boa is moving around? I know generally speaking things just move out of the way but the risk factor is still there and wondering what your thought process is behind that. My other question relates to the shelf you built for your boa's enclosure. I see that it's just regular lumbar, With the humidity requirements what have you done to prevent mold and rot etc. Again great video and topics

    Because of you, I switched my beardie over to coconut fiber and play sand and she's been doing GREAT! Better than she was, I think, on just a tank mat.
    CAN I ASK THOUGH! Could you do a video on HOW to get a bearded dragon to eat greens? Mine I've tried everything (I've put bee pollen, I've tried hiding fruit under greens, I've tried mixing up greens, I've tried putting her favourite insect in with the greens. I've tried doing it all at once) and she still wont eat greens.

    So regarding a good loose substrate, what's one you'd suggest for a leopard gecko? I usually have mine on coconut chip and feed her via tongs, but honestly wouldn't mind a nice substrate for her that I can just use a sift on for poop scooping down the line.

    Thank you! Picking up a snake to move it to a different enclosure for feeding is clearly more similar to handling than sticking some tongs into the enclosure and just letting the snake strike its meal. If a snake was going to confuse anything with being fed it would be the former and not the latter.

    Also rescued a savannah monitor who had multiple layers of stuck shed.

    BIGGEST dumb taboo besides your great points imo- if you don't take your reptile to the vet regularly, if you take care of any tiny issue at home (with good direction) or if you don't worm your reptiles regularly then you are the devil of keepers in so many parrot repeating reptile groups 🙄. Like exotic vets can be great but many of us started in the hobby before these were even an accessible thing

    My exotic vet (who treats reptiles on the daily and is approved by reptile organizations) heavily advises against the use of non loose substrate for bearded dragons & leopard geckos. They’ve apparently seen many joint issues/chronic pain arise from those animals living on non loose substrate their whole lives. Makes sense, imagine only walking on concrete your whole life

    I cohabited my leopard geckos in a 40 for about a year. I always watched for aggression, and they were the same age. It worked out really well! I had no issues with it, but now they live in separate 40 gallons! Also, question: my ball python is a spider morph, (she has slight neurological issues) she does tend to regurgitate her meals once and awhile. Should I wait 48 hours to hold her? Or will she be fine? Thanks :)

    i’ve tried loose substrate with my leopard gecko twice now in the year that i’ve had her and have come to the conclusion she absolutely hates it. however, the way people REFUSE to talk about loose substrate at all except “don’t use it” has made it so difficult to find resources and i’ve really been pulling my hair out trying to narrow the issue down. i wish people realized that labeling things as “taboo” and shutting conversations down entirely and focusing on shaming does worse for the hobby and DETERS people from being the best keepers they can be.

    Yeah, the tile or flagstone thing for bearded dragons never made sense to me. It seemed like it would be disgusting and difficult to clean. And with cohabbing, sometimes cohabbing snakes you normally wouldn’t keep together is completely fine as long as you pay attention to what is going on and give them a big enclosure.

    I'm sorry but knowing kingsnakes eat other snakes in the wild, I think I would be scared to put 2 or more together unsupervised. I still don't have any reptiles or amphibians, but I don't want a repeat of the past and take care of something in a way that's not best for them. We didn't know what African blue tongue skinks ate and the previous owners told us she ate hot dogs. It wasn't until after the poor skink died that we learned they ate pinky mice. Also, I want to be prepared with proper enclosures and not some home made junk.
