Bob Dylan (Most people just call him Dylan) was the poet laureate of my generation (60s, 70's and 80's). His song catalogue is stunningly unbelievable. He received the 2016 Nobel Prize in Literature and is a living legend.

He's still alive and releasing music and now he is in his early 80s. He really became well-known and famous in the early to mid 1960s when he was quite young. You definitely should check out his early pioneering music video from around 1965 called Subterranean Homesick Blues. He is about 24 I think for that one, and it was a huge hit, and it is to me a form of early rap. I swear to God it looks like he's about 17 years old in that!

Bob Dylan is a genre unto himself. The Nobel prize committee thought so too, awarding him the prize for literature in 2016 as a Poet Laureate based on his lifetime body of work since about 1960. Part of the award citation read "for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition". You owe it to yourself to get to know him.
Bob Dylan is one of the most prolific song writers ever. I've never cared much for his voice but it has grown on me over the years but he is poet. He has sooooooo many songs many recorded by other artists that people have no idea he even wrote.
Knocking on heavens, door was written for the soundtrack of the movie Pat Garrett, and Billy the Kid. It takes place in the old wild West Pat Garrett was the marshal gets his badge. Lots of songs have been written about Bob Dylan. In these songs, Dylan’s voice has been described as a voice that came from you and me and like sand and glue.
Well, hopefully you are disabused of that notions now as it is an easily verifiable fact that the song was written for the film as described. Dylan was tasked with creating the music for the film and the song appears originally on the album of the same name as the film.
The guy harmonizing with Dylan is Tom Petty from the tour when Dylan toured with The Heartbreakers (and I saw in person) The song itself is from the film “Pat Garrett &Billy The Kid” and is played when Slim Pickins (playing Sheriff Colin Baker) is shot and killed. Beautiful, powerful scene in the film.

This was an odd performance to use for hearing the song for the first time, but I guess it's the first one you found for this song. Keep on digging into Dylan's repertoire, you'll be glad you did. Bob Dylan is the only songwriter to ever win the Noble Prize for Literature. In the sixties he was king of the protest song. True poet. Check into him, you won't be sorry.
Bob is first a poet, a songwriter and for people of my age he exploded the sixties with his songs and lyrics. When he went electric at Newport festival it was like a bomb dropped on the music world. He wrote ALL ALONG THE WATCHTOWER made famous by Jimi Hendrix and many amazing songs collaborated with Johnny Cash etc. Recently you reacted to Joan Baez Diamonds and Rust. Dylan during interviews denies being a poet. He says he wouldn’t even know how to go about writing a poem. But, he also says many self contradictory things.
Bob currently is 81. I believe he was 45 in this performance. This song was from the billy the kid and pat garret soundtrack. I've seen Dylan 15 times. He is an American legend. A major influence to the beatles. Bob introduced the beatles to the drug scene Hahaha. Dylan first album came out in 1962. Also Dylan is a major part of Don McLane's American pie as the jester.
I saw him late 80’s.. The only words he said to the audience was at the end when he said thank you. Fantastic show from front row center seats. I camped out to be first in line.
This is one of those artists where I feel like you need to be familiar with the studio version of his songs before getting the full impact of the live versions of his songs.
Dylan shines a bright light, that has helped me find my way through the darkness. He is co-starring with Tom Petty here, they are wrapping thier voices around each other, that is why they are twos-up at the mic stand!
Possibly the greatest American poet of the 20th century --- a large part of his poetry he put into songs, and his music is also extremely novel and influential. I'm not American, but I think you can't be American without a good knowledge of Dylan's work. I feel it's a vital part -- and also the best part -- of American identity... Bob Dylan is one of those artists that, if you know him, you are always surprised to find people who DON'T know him....and when you discover him you are shocked at how many of his songs you know from other artists - like this one. It's important to realize that the gentleman in the top hat is Tom Petty, a musical giant in his own right. I think I'll recommend you listen to an earlier version to hear Dylan's voice solo. I've always taken this song as an Old West story of the town sheriff. I've sung this song in local bands and it's so moving.
This song was written by Dylan for the movie Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid (1973), a western involving a sheriff. It is being performed here by Bob Dylan backed by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers in 1986.
Dylan spoke for a generation whether he wanted to or not. A Nobel laureate as Wally mentioned. Delve into his earlier catalogue, if only for yourself and put it into a historical context. It is stunning. One of his best from later in his career from the "Blood on the Tracks" album is "Tangled Up in Blue".
Because Bob Dylan and Tom Petty are great friends performing together here, before they join up with George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, and Roy Orbison as the Traveling Wilburys, such greatness
Bob Dylan is considered by some as the greatest songwriter and lyricist in musical history. He influenced a myriad of other great musicians. Thanks for the reaction to this legend.
This song has been covered by soooo many artists In quite a few different genres: Guns N Roses, Wyclef Jean, Eric Clapton, Warren Zevon, Booker T Jones, Babyface, Avril Lavigne, etc.
The band backing Bob Dylan in this performance is Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Bob asked them to open for him on this tour and then play with him. They are definitely a band worth checking out if you haven't already!!
A lot of people talk about the influence Bob Dylan had over so many artists. But few talk about some of the people on the Folk Scene in the 1960s that influenced Dylan. Two gentlemen he looked up to were Tommy Makem and Liam Clancy who performed Irish folk music both traditional songs as well as their own song writing efforts. Bob Dylan is on record saying that Liam Clancy is the best singer he ever heard. Makem's song "Gentle Annie" and Clancy's version of "The Dutchman" are truly great works.
Bob Dylan is a greatest singer-songwriter ever his songs have been covered over 5000 times if you went on Wikipedia and look at the songs people have covered you would be endless and it really seems like it's endless he's not only in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the writers Hall of Fame he won the Nobel Peace Prize for literature the Nobel committee in Sweden sad he changed a generation with his music and lyrics one of his songs is named the best song ever written Like a Rolling Stone he still alive and at the age of 79, in 2020, he had the number one song, Murder Most Foul!!
Bob Dylan wrote this song for the 1973 movie Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid. Sheriff Pat Garrett was played by actor James Coburn and Billy the kid was played by none other than song writer Kris Kristofferson. The scene this song was played was after a deputy played by actor Slim Pickens (always played the best cowboy parts) was sitting by a river dying of a gun shot wound in the gut.
bob is considered maybe the best ever songwriter. And he dealt with so many social issues head on. You've heard his songs. mostly covered. Blowing in the Wind, Mr. Tambourine Man, Subteranean Homesick Blues, HIghway 61 revisited. He's been covered by Jimi Hendrix; Peter Paul and Mary. Bob also did supergroup with George Harrison, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison called Traveling Wilbury's - listen to Handle With Care first, Down the line
Not to write a book, but Dylan is legendary. This song was written for the soundtrack of 'Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid', a western, and this song was the death scene of a sheriff in the movie, he'dbeen shot, his wife is who he called "mama", take this badge off of me.
I believe tha stance enables him to maximize the use of his lungs for the harmonica. this has alwys been my favorite Dylan song, great find...great reaction
it is just so good! AM radio never sounded so good in the 1970s! as soon as this song would end i would turn the radio dial till i could find it again!
Dylan was awarded The Nobel Prize in Literature. His acceptance speech on UA-cam is important because young people don’t read and write anymore. Maybe someone will be inspired.
Microphone: it brings an intimacy to the performance that separate microphones lacks perhaps. The Beatles live performances usually employed the practice.
It doesn’t get better than Bob Dylan. He has been making poetry and music since 1950’s. Incredible catalog of lyrics and music! Bob was born in Northern Minnesota and started out in folk poetry. He is an enigma and master! Probably the most admired by other musicians.
Bob Dylan looks younger than you expected because this is an old video. This song was written for the Western movie Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid (1973). Dylan had a small part in the film as well. I can't make out the co-singer with certainty since the video isn't clear, but I think it's Tom Petty, who toured with Dylan circa 1987. Edit: I see the credits identified Petty and the rest of his Heartbreakers band. I think Hurricane should be your next Dylan reaction as it's based on a true story (that was also turned into a movie starring Denzel Washington)
Bob Dylan's 1992 30th Anniversary Concert at Madison Square Garden is interesting because many great artists performed the Dylan songs that they had covered during their careers - and of course Dylan plays as well.
This is a unique time when he toured with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. They felt honored to tour with Bob Dylan who is an individual and not a band. He has received The Nobel Peace Prize in recent years. This song was part of a movie soundtrack he wrote for Pat Garrett and Billy The Kid.
If you have a few minutes pull Bob up on Wiki and see who we're dealing with hear. Bob Dylan a giant in so MANY ways. Only Bob can be Bob. You will find 100 giants in the land of musicians who will bow down to Bob. He is iconic and fascinating as hell. He is the musician, writer and songwriters legend. That's the word for Dylan..Legendary. He will be 82 soon and many of us are surprised that he survived his reckless life. Some of us...me for example...love him. My children had to hear his sometimes strange singing while in their baby cribs but they are better off for it. So many college courses are taught around Dylan lyrics.....I'll stop now.
My Mount Rushmore of musicians starts with Bob Dylan (rounded out with Prince, Ella Fitzgerald and Duke Ellington). You just started your trip down the Bob Dylan rabbit hole. Enjoy the journey! I suggest you start with "Like a Rolling Stone", "Simple Twist of Fate" and "It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)"
Never do Bob live. Phenomenal songwriter, but I have seen him live multiple times is godawful in concert. This song was from the soundtrack of pat Garrett and Billy the kid. Early in his career was an acoustic folk singer. Loved to play with grateful dead and the band and tom petty. I guarantee you have heard his songs.
More Dylan songs you will love and need to react to. "Like a Rolling Stone", Hurricane, The times they are a changin, Positively 4th street. So many big artists have covered Dylan songs!
I've been enjoying your channel for a few months and am impressed by your knowledgeable reactions. I am SO surprised that you didn't know Dylan. A person could fill up most of a year reacting to one Dylan song a day, and many here would love that!
Britt, please please PLEASE try to include links to the source videos in your descriptions! It makes it that much easier for us to check them out too! Thanks, have a good day❤ 🤗
the poet of the 60s generation. lyrically and musically in the top tier. i dont always like him but when he gets it right its special. this is one of those times. stunning.
Britt, this was a very atypical Bob Dylan performance. You have to hear his love songs - "If Not For You," "To Ramona," "Love Minus Zero," "Tangled Up in Blue," "Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts," "Buckets of Rain," "Simple Twist of Fate." "Girl from the North Country," "Don't Think Twice," and "Just Like a Woman," just to name my favorite ten. His best love songs are his most beautiful songs.
Maybe they were trying to save on mikes 😄 - You oughta see Dylan when he uses a neck brace to play harmonica while playing the guitar. One of the funniest videos is him playing his song, Jokerman, on the David Letterman Show. At the end of the song he does a harmonica solo but immediately realizes that the harmonica he picked up is in the wrong key. Then he spends nearly a minute looking for the right harmonica while his band has to take up the slack.
Bob Dylan~~ the man ~~ the legend!!! He is the only songwriter to ever win the Noble Prize for Literature. His songs rules the 60's with his protest songs!!!! A true rebel WITH a cause!! Great poet, great body of work!!!. He also wrote "Blowin in the Wind", IDon't Think Twise-it's alright: Like A rolling Stone" and many others!!!
Now you have gone and done it... Bob Dylan! One of the best song writers ever, a national treasure....try "Forever Young" from the Last Waltz video with The Band.... Something we can all wish for to be "Forever Young."
Can't remember the exact timeline (I think this was the mid 80's). Bob toured with Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers , so they were basically his backing band. I think they did their own abbreviated set as well though. Tom had to break it off at a certain point to get back to his own career. Dylan loved playing with them though.
He wrote songs like Make me feel your love covered by Adele and Garth Brooks, the Watchtower by Jimi Hendrix, the song you reviewed today Guns and Roses,
Dylan’s “backup” band became legendary in their own right as THE BAND. Would love to hear your reaction to one of their songs-suggest “It Makes No Difference” from the film entitled “The Last Waltz.” Love your work.
Many of Dylan's concerts were sung with others at the same microphone. I love this tour with Tom Petty in the 80s. This version of Knocking on Heaven's Door is one of my favorites and nice that you included it for your wonderful reaction. There's many wonderful videos of the Rolling Thunder Revue Tour in the 70s . Bob Dylan sings Idiot Wind, Tangled up in Blue, to suggest just a couple of so many that he wrote that were performed on that great tour. The hats w/fresh flowers, makeup, etc. That tour was gypsy like, with many other musicians touring on it at different times. It was in 2 parts Work a look 😊❤
Hi Britt! One of the greatest Bob Dylan covers is the Jimi Hendrix version of "All Along the Watch Tower". Hendrix also does a killer version of Dylan's "Like A Rolling Stone" in his performance at the Monterey Pop Festival. Oh, I just Subscribed. Have a great day!
Growing up in the 60's and 70's Bob Dlyan was the voice of our generation. I always felt his raspy clearly worded voice was a great asset forcing the listener to think and focus more on the meaning of the well written lyrics rather then the catchy tunes which often came across as part protest, part soothsayer, part mystic lover adapt at capturing prevailing heart felt moods, and always a guiness at songs with strong mood or a powerful message.
All You Dylan Fans..........a visit to the Bob Dylan Center in Tulsa, OK is well worth the trip. That sounds like the Staple Singers doing back up? Which makes sense. They did back up with the The Band Last Waltz (The Weight) in which Dylan appeared. And Dylan was key to the success of The Band.
"Knockin' on Heaven's Door" is a song by American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan, written for the soundtrack of the 1973 film Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid.
The other vocalist is Tom Petty. He, Dylon, George Harrison, Jeff Lynn (ELO) and Roy Orbison formed the Traveling Willbury’s in the early 90’s (about the time this video was made).
"The Gentleman Harmonizing" is the late, great Tom Petty... Bob Dylan is one of Tom's heroes, and this. Is Bob's song. I'm sure Tom was totally stoked to be playing with Bob, and deferred all attention to him. Check out "The Traveling Wilburys"... Tom, his heroes, and their heroes, playing together.

Bob Marley and more still
that is so cool!
Bob Dylan is a folk artist from the 60’s who is still performing today at the age of 81 years old
that is wild... still performing at 81... couldn't be me lol i'd be enjoying that retirement life
You could do a Bob Dylan only reaction channel and have enough material for a year at your current rate.
haha
@@brittreacts...it's true
This is one of those songs that I can't help but tear up. Especially after watching that scene from Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid. Cuts me deep.
I love the way that that soul music moves me to my core, it just feels so good ❤️🔥
that is amazing! music has such a power!
bob is considered maybe the best ever songwriter.
This song was written for the soundtrack of 'Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid', a western, and this song was the death scene of a sheriff in the movie, he'dbeen shot, his wife is who he called "mama", take this badge off of me.
that is so interesting, thanks for the info!
Maybe someone will be inspired.
that is so cool!
@@brittreacts Britt, you are so cool!
Microphone: it brings an intimacy to the performance that separate microphones lacks perhaps. The Beatles live performances usually employed the practice.
that is interesting!
It doesn’t get better than Bob Dylan. He has been making poetry and music since 1950’s. Incredible catalog of lyrics and music! Bob was born in Northern Minnesota and started out in folk poetry. He is an enigma and master! Probably the most admired by other musicians.
Dylan is a beast upon himself. Musically, his catalog is immense. Writer, artist, poet....jack of all trades
One of the greatest poets/songwriters ever!! Dylan is a music icon.
For me. It’s Blood on The Tracks. Virtually every cut. I know the catalogue is so much deeper. But I always come here.
Glad you discovered Bob Dylan...not 40+ but passed 80, but still amazing, still going and one of the best ever.....
Bob Has the curly hair and harmonica . He’s a Great song writer!
true
Tom Petty is a star too---so they probably want him totally upfront with Dylan while they are both singing.
Side note he is a Nobel peace prize winning writer😮
wow did not know that!
It was a Nobel Prize for Literature…not Peace.
Good one here, Bob has a very distinct sound, hear him once and you'll always recognize his voice
You young people have got so much to learn and look forward to. They were great times, music-wise at least.
More Dylan songs you will love and need to react to. "Like a Rolling Stone", Hurricane, The times they are a changin, Positively 4th street. So many big artists have covered Dylan songs!
The Bob Dylan performance you NEED to react to is his 1976 live performance of 'Idiot Wind'. It's amazing.
This Dylan song was written for a movie that Dylan did the soundtrack . "Pat Garrot and Billy the kid"
Van Morrison also does a great cover of this song in the soundtrack for "An Officer and a Gentleman".
You should see his performance at the concert for Bangladesh absolutely amazing.
This song was written for the soundtrack of a movie and I believe it was used during a scene when one of the characters dies.
Bob Dylan won the noble prize for poetry. He is in his 80’s now
And if you listen to him more you will realize that he sings all his songs this way. Just how he sings.
Bob Dylan is one of the greatest poet/song writers of the 20th century. The guy in the hat is the late great Tom Petty.
I thought that was Tom Petty. RIP to a great musician and human being.
thank you for the info! Bob Dylan is great!
Has won the Nobel Peace Prize for his gorgeous poetry
Bob Dylan is a vast collection of many, many people... keep listening..
It was in 2 parts
Work a look 😊❤
Master singer and song writer. Legendary song!
The story of Billy the Kid. The album version is one of the greatest things you will ever hear.
Timeless, legendary, poetic, poignant. In short, fire 🔥🔥🔥
Growing up in the 60's and 70's Bob Dlyan was the voice of our generation. I always felt his raspy clearly worded voice was a great asset
forcing the listener to think and focus more on the meaning of the well written lyrics rather then the catchy tunes which often came across as part protest, part soothsayer, part mystic lover adapt at capturing prevailing heart felt moods, and always a guiness at songs with strong mood or a powerful message.
This song was written for the movie Pat Garret and Billy The Kid. Dylan is an actor in the movie.
Bob Dylan was a poet, a Nobel prize winner for literature
He looks younger than you thought because this concert with Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers is older than your are. This is from 1986.
My gen too when music genres crossed over in every band and singer..they didnt limit themselves. There was so much comradery
Personal experience. I've shared a mic. when I didn't rehearse enough and it helped us hit the cues together.
It's not so much the lyrics, but the presentation that makes this great. That and Dylan's mystique.
