I still have never understood why people risked so much stuff. Carried crazy amounts of stuff on them and then decided to follow some dude into the wild. The only thing a scammer ever got me for was an iron plate and legs, and that was the day I learned to trust nobody.
Considering how most players were of the younger sort back then, it ain't that surprising. Making money was hard - especially if you were young and didn't really get how RS worked at its core due to not having an adult brain/experience. If it meant getting easy money and fame/social clout/recognition from your peers (see how popular RS was with kids too back then) then it's easy how that easily outweighs any guilt about luring. Especially as some kids tend to do plenty of trying to trick each other into doing something silly/bad/ridiculous as it is if they know something and the other does not. Combine this with an echo chamber of other players looking up to lurers/victim blaming or blaming (which goes on to this day) being common play, and you got a good explanation for why this was the case. Add in a heap of dehumanizing technology via computers, it being a "shortcut" to the "big leagues", plus a very generous portion of the player population consisting of immature young boys about to or entering puberty town, and the picture becomes even clearer. Oh, and while it's hard to tell, I'm willing to bet a fair share of the most successful never-do-wells back then had a few years on the main age bracket of players. Some extra years of brain growth really go a long way when you are trying to shake people down for their virtual items. Might also to boot make them appear like a "cool aspirational figure." And even if not, kids are no strangers to lying about their age to try and one-up each other.
Imagine being so new to the game you know no rules of our savage streets... Everyone and everywhere will scam and lure you if you give them an opportunity.
Died this way for a Santa hat when I was 11. I Called my dad crying while he was at work. It wasn’t Jojo that did it but a guy name “Peter Or”. crazy how 17 years later I still remember the guys name.
Gotta admit, this was the one and ONLY lure I ever fell for back in the day 🤣Not that it was worth much to most but to me it was the world since I saved up for it - lost a dragon mask + full saradomin armor. Funnily enough when I was running back to Varrock I ran into the same lurer standing next to his buddy all I remember was begging for my stuff back like dumb a noob. Much to my surprise the lurer trades me only my rune hatchet back. I learned a big lesson that day. Never trust anyone taking you to the wildy that fat stack of gold is always too good to be true. Great vid thnx for sharing with us gave me flash backs to the old days
I actually remember this guy back when I was a noob, I was standing in Varrock west bank when he came and traded me showing a bunch of party hats and me thinking I would get them for free. At the time I had no idea who it was but was funny when I eventually stumbled upon his videos 😅
Wow I forgot Jojo. Lures were so common, I remember my buddy losing full Addy (g) to the poison tribesmen behind Brimhaven house portal because the guy who brought you there would trade you over and over without ever actually accepting for the antipoison (and yes we tried to do it to others after that, we were 13). I could write an encyclopedia of all these old scams.
I imagine there’s a level of sociopathy or narcissism associated with lurers. As a kid in 2004 I got lured but I continued playing. RS was one of the only distractions I had in my life to keep sanity from a very unstable home. I often wonder how many people that guy robbed from the only outlet some people had.
Trust me, you're not important to them, the second they scammed you was the second they forgot you existed. Just accept that you got scammed, take it as a learning experience and move on like everyone else knew how to do, it's really not as important to anyone except for you.
@@JimMilton-ej6zi I mean I never really cared it’s just a game in the end, the message I was sending is I wonder how many people quit after it happened and got robbed of therapeutic outlet as a kid.
@JimMilton-ej6zi nah it was helpful for a lot of people in bad situations. Choosing not to see or care about that doesn't change it,it just explains how/why they do what they do.
When I frst started Runescape, I was mining in Varrock and got an emerald, I asked people what it was for and was told it was for making jewelry, but it needed cutting first; the player told me he'd cut it for me. Anyway that's the story of how 12 year old me lost an emerald and never trusted anyone again.
I remember when luring was allowed. The game was a hellscape back then. If you didn't use your brain then you could lose your money or even your identity. I miss the wild wild west version of runescape.
It was great, in a game where you get mugged and attacked by wizards on the way to varrock it makes sense that people near varrock and the wildy would be hooligans looking to mug people as well, it feels like an actual MMO rather than a single player game like modern runescape seems to feel like.
I'm starting to wonder how probable it is that to this day RS suffers from the stuff that went on in the early days by proxy of a lot of players being around back then. Ignoring rares and stuff, I am more so referring to the people who are still around to this day and had their player attitudes negatively shaped or impacted by getting lured/scammed/tricked. Sure would explain some things, like how some people just go absolutely ballistic in chat if you kill them, and about how the pvp player base has an unreasonably low reputation at best. Not to mention how they helped shape and form luring culture and other such things by being early to the party. Maybe these early folk have cast a far longer shadow than realized?
I mean, I've been around since 01- just a _seriously_ poor player who occasionally pulled a fast one with rare black lobsters(I wonder how many people will read that and think, "SO IT WAS _YOU!")_ when I had to. I'd say most of these things just, evolved into what they were, over time. Sure, all us little ten year olds were toxic as hell, and you'd get a lotta flaming for anything, but the actual pvp scene was always changing. It was more dynamic, with new builds coming out all the time, and some pretty big clan wars. Not that I ever bothered with any of that- I usually tried to skirt AROUND all the fighting to either explore or get what I needed. Beyond that, the scams and the bots were a nuisance back then. So we kind of underestimated their impact. Even jagex did. Even now they're almost passive to it. But, if you want to talk toxicity? It's only gotten worse ever since all this 1ticking garbage started. When people got bored of league of legends, came back to runescape, and started imposing a _meta_ on it. They've completely overtaken the rest of the community, to push & vote for content of that sort, and along with it came that notoriously toxic league of legends mindset. People are more aggressive and closed-minded than ever.
After getting scammed so much as a kid, I joined the dark side at like 12 years old lol. I would do tribesman lure in Karamja and rune scimitar trade switch everyday.
It felt like being in a minority thinking lurers were scumbags back then. So many people had the kindergarten-level stunted morals of, "It's okay if you don't get caught."
Lurers add more fun to the game, it's a game where you deal with kidnappings, muggers, and a skill dedicated to robbing npcs, and MMO's are meant to blend the NPC and player interactions into the story itself so having players take the place of NPC muggers is an amazing and lively thing. If more people were willing to interact in an MMO then it'd actually be fun.

O man, used to do loads of these lures myself back in the day. I think it was pretty easy to pull off cause I was quite a bit older than the majority off the playerbase at the time
I used to lure back in the day, our most success was in clan wars pvp section. We would have two 'noobs' in rich gear fighting in singles. People would lost thier minds watching them fight so badly, theyd encourage them to run to multi to help at which point oir two noobs would both turn and d spear as team ran in. I think theres still a video, NHF luring

Other bit silly solo lure was at karamja where you ask person to help with video and go to tribesmans at brimhaven via ship from ardy. There were quite few good tricks back in a day, One of them was boxing in PoH till you get to very low hp, then scammer gives you raw karambwit tells you to cook it to heal. and the moment you eat it kicks you out of the house and you die of poison almost imidiateley after. Usually they lure you to their house by seeing you in world Trade worlds (before GE) and telling you his friend has an item you're buying so just come to his PoH to wait. Another much simplier used to be telling you to come to wildy, obviously they tell you to bring only one item (like santa hat or single barrows set piece) and nothing else "not to risk losing stuff", lurers accomplice would somewhere drop noted 3 d battle axes and log out and lurer would take you that spot, no plug ins back in a day nothing right clicking only said "Dragon battle axe (noted)" or something like that, it didnt mention quanity of them. So the moment you took it off the ground the lurer and his friend who just logged back in would attack you
Use to do the 4 noted dragon battle axes in wild and people with Santa hats or p hats would pic up. Then you just destroy them. They would always keep the battle axe over everything
A video on Mr bug would probably be pretty cool, he was huge early days of osrs, did a Christmas event with lots of donations for a giveaway and apparently disappeared, also stopped posting afterwards lol.
I fell for this sham once. It was ages ago. I remember I eacaoed the wildy and actually got to varrock bank. But died while banking from venom. Don't remember now specifically what I lost but back then it was depressing
honestly i wish tricks like this were still in the game, it's almost like a rite of passage in runescape and it fits in with the world where muggers and wizards are out to get you around every corner. Now that the playerbase's average age is in their 20's, i think it's safe to remove the pit in the wildy and make in-game scams part of the lore.
The one and only time I got lured was before the wilderness ditch was added. I traded someone who was 'selling a whip' and it forced me into level 1 wilderness where I first saw ancients and had no idea what they were so died pretty quick. Didn't really lose all that much was a few hundred K and some other stuff it was losing some castle wars armour that annoyed me the most.
This happened to me in my very first few hours in the game. I didn’t have any idea what happened or that I even died. I had no idea what was happening at all. I did get confused a little later when I realized I didn’t have my stuff anymore, though, tutorial island stuff. 😂
yooo man!! when you said jojo3000 i was like ommfg i actualy do remember this frekaing person. Normally i dont really remember the people you over in your videos even tho from the years 2005-2011 i played runescape almost every single day for 5 hours at a clip. And i hardly remember the big influencers but jojo i remember!!!!
i fell for the wildy lure back in 06, lost full zamorak rune armor, i ended up crying for a while.. my mom noticed and she let me use her credit card to buy 5m gold from a rwt site.. got banned quickly after X D
I used to do the same thing but with the wizard tower. I would bet the low level accounts they couldnt beat the wizard npc's. Best item i got was ammy of fury (t).
Btw he came back when it was returned I was in his clan chat. That man made bank he was there for a few months n taught me a few tricks. Luring was like a hobby I’d do an hour before I pk and I would cash in 2 times a week. Had a 99 con account it was hella easy so many ppl forgot about basic lures it pretty much was a fish n a barrel.
I used to do this, but I'd get there attention, take them behind the pub, tell them my friend just dropped 10m in wildy cause he had his cash stack and just run there with them. 9/10 times they ran in, even with the ditch update, it was crazy. I did get muted quite a few times though, never banned
Never had any rares, so never lost any to lurerers. But - trying to craft runes via the Abyss was a nightmare. PKers would attack you on the way for no other reason than to be dicks. They didn't gain really any wealth from it - but griefing is what they do best. I was so incensed at the time, that I tried to fightback with an "anti-PKer" PKer clan (it was a flop, lol), but at least I tried!
i remember the days when loot appeared instanly, i lost my very first whip at the spiders in the stronghold of security because i fell asleep :3 the good ol' days
Wait... I... I knew Dmoneysme1/Dmoneysme0. Shit I still think I know that guy. You're telling me that guy had a strange influence on runescape history? wack.
As someone with the same character for over 20 yrs the game has evolved immensely...Like video said 50-100k used to be a task but now I can trip and fall into a million...Hope you all are doing well!!! 😂
interesting about his apology later on. I wonder if it was genuine or damage control. I remember scamming a guy on Runescape 2002 and still feel bad about it to this day.
11 year old me would scam players by saying, “My uncle is a Jagex mod and they are offering free 1 month membership promotions. All I need is your username and password to enable membership for your account. I’ll forward him the info and you’ll have your membership.” I have since been forgiven by Saradomin for my crimes.
I got a set of freshly smithed full bronze stolen 1 time trying to get it trimmed , been a skeptic ever since 😂. I don’t even acknowledge anyone saying my username randomly trying to get my attn, unless it’s to tell me my internal cape is the bees knees 😂😂😂
Can you tell me where you got the clip at 6:35??? I remember watching this super old pking video where a guy pretends to be a noob and get "lured" into the wilderness, only to turn on him and sing walking on sunshine. I have been trying to find this clip for over a decade now, and that looks like it is it!!
My friends an I lured in edgeville. There used to be a rock wall that blocked you from going to the monistary from the rune plate seller forcing you to go into the wilderness to get to the monistary. We used that lol
My favorite scam I learned and did to people was bring them from fally or GE have them jump wilderness ditch into like lvl 1 or 2 wilderness and I would stay on safe side of ditch. I would then tell them to drop item or gp since it showed up instantly if you dropped it in wildly and then dance on it 3 times and it would duplicate. Well during emotes you couldn’t cancel the emote so I would tele grab the money or item while they danced and I ran away
@@IAmStayingAnonymous sadly it happened to me, after that I vowed to never be a victim again 😂 before that back in the day when you pk’d someone you didn’t even get the items they had. Had a buddy pk me when I had full addy (g) and he gave me the loot back, loot was an adamant 2h and a normal adamant platebody. I cried I was like 6-7 😂😂

I fell for this sham once. It was ages ago. I remember I eacaoed the wildy and actually got to varrock bank. But died while banking from venom. Don't remember now specifically what I lost but back then it was depressing
That dragon armor with white boots and whip is so iconic.
This guy was smooth and really good at talking people into the lure before it actually happened the goat for sure🐐
honestly i wish tricks like this were still in the game, it's almost like a rite of passage in runescape and it fits in with the world where muggers and wizards are out to get you around every corner.
Now that the playerbase's average age is in their 20's, i think it's safe to remove the pit in the wildy and make in-game scams part of the lore.
I was active during the times of all of these videos but had no idea there were “celebrities “
This brings back some old memories I didn't even know I had anymore
I thought this was going to be Framed lol
Thought the title was about Ice Poseidon at first.
My IRL friend at the time let me borrow his santa hat and I was in W2 showing it off. I got lured by jojo3000, but I somehow escaped without dying.
i fell for the wildy lure back in 06, lost full zamorak rune armor, i ended up crying for a while.. my mom noticed and she let me use her credit card to buy 5m gold from a rwt site.. got banned quickly after X D
I used to do the same thing but with the wizard tower. I would bet the low level accounts they couldnt beat the wizard npc's. Best item i got was ammy of fury (t).
Entangle wasn't the lowest level bind spell, snare or bind is.
I've been warning people about JOJO since '96!!!
pin me dadide
Btw he came back when it was returned I was in his clan chat. That man made bank he was there for a few months n taught me a few tricks. Luring was like a hobby I’d do an hour before I pk and I would cash in 2 times a week. Had a 99 con account it was hella easy so many ppl forgot about basic lures it pretty much was a fish n a barrel.
So many ppl lured when the wilderness came back yet it was never talked about.
I used to do this, but I'd get there attention, take them behind the pub, tell them my friend just dropped 10m in wildy cause he had his cash stack and just run there with them. 9/10 times they ran in, even with the ditch update, it was crazy. I did get muted quite a few times though, never banned
What a bizarre adventure.
Crazy how RuneScape has so much history involving its players
Hope it continues. I don’t play anymore but 20yr of my life was spent in this game. Nostalgic memories for life.
love seeing these when I get home from school :)
me and a bud set up one of our other friends years ago gave him some gear and what not took him out all the way then killed him. he was still pissed
"some people just want to watch the world burn"
Never had any rares, so never lost any to lurerers. But - trying to craft runes via the Abyss was a nightmare. PKers would attack you on the way for no other reason than to be dicks. They didn't gain really any wealth from it - but griefing is what they do best. I was so incensed at the time, that I tried to fightback with an "anti-PKer" PKer clan (it was a flop, lol), but at least I tried!
I remember high alching on the edge of lvl 1 wildy in w18 edgeville, no wildy ditch of course. Never accept a trade when alching 😂
Good memories , first time I got lured first time i got scammed . I even fell for the damn armor triming scam 😢
This guy was the “Hi this is Jon from Microsoft” of osrs
Lure er.. lurer…. Lu rahuh…Ler’rrrrr
I gotta say getting revenge on a lurer years later is one of the best feelings.
I saw that infernal max cape! Idk how new it is cuz i've been binging your older vids but, GZ!!
i remember the days when loot appeared instanly, i lost my very first whip at the spiders in the stronghold of security because i fell asleep :3 the good ol' days
"Dude, your good" after getting sat twice and unable to loot your pile. I feel for bro
I lost my mith full and most of my bank back in 07 era this way. Me and my family went out to dinner and I was still pissed.
Yooo😂😂😂 Dmoney Killed me before that crazyyyy 😂😂
I got scammed by Jojo except his character was a girl with a blue party hat. Got the ice barrage wildly lure and lost full zammy and Sara.
I remember doing that zamarack lure lol good times. The best tho was trimming items for players.
Bro, i didn't need jojo3000 to lure my at zammy wines, i lured myself there.
Wait...
I remember when 200k for a Santa seemed like an impossibility for me and I took weeks to gr8nd it and ended up buying full rune instead
interesting about his apology later on. I wonder if it was genuine or damage control. I remember scamming a guy on Runescape 2002 and still feel bad about it to this day.
Brooo I was 9 and got done by this lure. Lost my full rune, dragon longsword and black beret, I cried my eyes out haha
11 year old me would scam players by saying, “My uncle is a Jagex mod and they are offering free 1 month membership promotions. All I need is your username and password to enable membership for your account. I’ll forward him the info and you’ll have your membership.” I have since been forgiven by Saradomin for my crimes.
I’m pretty sure if you had gold at all in your inventory in those days, 3gp would protect over all items
saw the thumbnail and thought this was going to be about ice poseidon 🤭 looking forward to watching it on my lunch break!
I honestly thought this was going to be about Mr. Bug and the holiday drop party.
Perhaps I'll do a video on that in the future :)
6:33 snare has left the chat
Stuff like this is probably part of the reason RuneScape isn’t as popular now as it was back then.
Yeah we just need to bring back luring.
I feel bad for the people who lost partyhats and halloween masks and whatnot, but the swarm of air strikers made me burst out laughing
Lmao that windstrike spam was so funny and clever xD
Can you tell me where you got the clip at 6:35??? I remember watching this super old pking video where a guy pretends to be a noob and get "lured" into the wilderness, only to turn on him and sing walking on sunshine. I have been trying to find this clip for over a decade now, and that looks like it is it!!
Yup! Here you go :) ua-cam.com/video/XXnd7WHbshQ/v-deo.html
I like your videos !! Keep up the good
He tried luring me for my yellow not knowing i was the original account owner of Uzot (one of his luring partners) and was well aware of him lmao
My friends an I lured in edgeville. There used to be a rock wall that blocked you from going to the monistary from the rune plate seller forcing you to go into the wilderness to get to the monistary. We used that lol
I remember that!!! When walking from edge to the monastery you had to run north around the hill and for a split second you'd be in the wildly lol
Love your content man
I'll never get tired of hearing Colnello say lerr
My favorite scam I learned and did to people was bring them from fally or GE have them jump wilderness ditch into like lvl 1 or 2 wilderness and I would stay on safe side of ditch. I would then tell them to drop item or gp since it showed up instantly if you dropped it in wildly and then dance on it 3 times and it would duplicate. Well during emotes you couldn’t cancel the emote so I would tele grab the money or item while they danced and I ran away
Damn bro u a savage who taught you that shit lol
@@IAmStayingAnonymous sadly it happened to me, after that I vowed to never be a victim again 😂 before that back in the day when you pk’d someone you didn’t even get the items they had. Had a buddy pk me when I had full addy (g) and he gave me the loot back, loot was an adamant 2h and a normal adamant platebody. I cried I was like 6-7 😂😂
@@fatdoinkbaby2419 so what you're referring to is when they implemented the trade limit. It would give you random items of "the same value" but the value was janky. Before the trade limit though you would get their items. You still a savage tho lol 😆
Beautiful story. What a legend!
Never heard of this guy
I want the Graardor from Crumb so bad but the shipping to Europe is almost 40 dollars. Cant justify spending so much on delivery
I remb when Ancients came out...That Ice Barrage or whatever its called changed the GAME!!! CASTLE WARS WAS A BLAST WITH IT!!! PK was REDICULOUS with it!!! So did that DAGGER SPEC!!! 🤣🤣🤣
Mx799 was an insane lurer back in the day
6:33 The lowest level freeze spell is bind at level 20, not entangle at level 79. Though it only freezes for 5 seconds.
Also, 8:08 Ring of Life teleports you to your respawn point, which isn't necessary Falador.
I immediately thought of ice Poseidon when i sew the title. Bro's like 100X more prolific than this jojo kid. All this kid did was make idiots fall for a 10k coin scam. not that epic. Especially if you consider that barely anybody knew who this dude was.
I thought it was ice to lol
