Good to see a little more of Kimblee finally! Definitely one of the Loose units in this show.

"Because I promise that they won't forget you" ~ Kimblee
Interesting sentence there. I did not even notice how well this ties to the show the first couple of times I watched it.
The saddest part of the backstory with Riza is that she only joined the army because she truly believed in the ideals that Mustang had and that she admired.
So it was really traumatizing for Roy to see that she ended up becoming a killer just because she joined the army in an attempt to follow his ideals.
The disease that killed Trisha. The Ishvallan war resulted in tremendous casualties. That’s a lot of deaths in decay, and a lot of that was carried westward. Ed mentioned that there was a plague that was tearing through some of the eastern towns. This is a reference to the Western front in World War I. Particularly the aftermath of the battle of Somme. Tens of thousands of lay dead in the mud. Men, cows, horses, rats, you name it. There was no place to bury the dead no retrieval and so all that was just left there to rot. A lot of innocent people got sick from from carrion like rats and insects, even the wind.
I know that the anime left a lot of details from the manga so was this one of them?
@@dimoned123 Yes and no. The plague originating from the war is in the manga. The inspiration came from the Author.
Kimblee was definitely spitting facts in his monologue to Riza.
He might be twisted, but he had some good points
Good writing to develop relatable villains
@@xcmvp2007 I wouldn't say relatable but understable for sure. If someone relates to Kimblee.....
@@gabrieldossantos1116 I'm literally Solf J. Kimblee
see, i cant really see it that way.. because sure a soldier should be prepared to kill but only ever other soldiers during a war.. collateral damage is one thing but being asked to blatantly murder innocent civilians?? i dont think any soldier would expect that to be part of their job, because it shouldnt be
@@jrdnlyr "I don't think any soldier would expect that to be part of their job." That's because you live in a free, democratic, society, and in those circumstances you'd be right to think so. But Emestris is no such place. Emestris is a pseudo-German dictatorship. It's literally "What if Hitler had succeeded?" Under that pretense, voluntarily joining the military and thinking you won't be commanded to commit moral atrocities is thoroughly ignorant, and that's the point Kimblee is making.
“I’ll follow you into hell if you ask me to.” Love their relationship.
After Ishval, hell might feel like a vacation.
Yes, it is implied that Hawkeye's tattoo is flame alchemy research. In one of the midcards, you can see that there is something wrong with it, like it was damaged. I don't remember how much of Armstrong's story in the war was revealed, but there is one detail about what he did in the war
It's not implied. It is explicit text within the story. They say it outright.
One thing i do like about Armstrong is that whenever he references running away due to cowardice he really means he regrets not acting to stop the killing rather then regretting being unable to do his "duty".
The guitar intros are so goddamn fire man, nice
Thanks!!
Roy has had flame alchemy since before the Ishvalan war. It is safe to say that he has seen Riza's tattoo.
Spoiler!
@@suraz6435 How is that a spoiler?
It shows him using flame alchemy during Ishval, and Master Hawkeye said he hadn't given it to him when he died and Riza had the research.
@@izukukageyama7552 it's spoiler cuz they show a scene much later in the series about wht u jst said in ur initial comment
Yes! This. He says the secret to flame alchemy is with Riza. We see it’s tattooed on her back. And we know Roy didn’t learn it from the alchemist himself. Ergo….
@@suraz6435 No, it's not a spoiler, precisely because he didn't give them information they didn't already have. Literally everyone who is paying attention knows Roy has seen Riza naked by the time they finish this episode because the episode itself makes that clear as day.
In regards to Armstrong, you'll notice there is definitely subtle story telling going on. Alchemists are automatically regarded as the rank of Major in the Military. Armstrong has been in the military for just as long as Roy. But as Armstrong stood up for the Ishvalans and didn't want to participate in the war, he never got a promotion. He is still a Major. Meanwhile Mustang has climbed up to the rank of Colonel. It's a very fascinating yet subtle storytelling going on
I'm pretty sure we already saw the scene when he is dismissed from the War.
@@acrabdevis Yeah it was in one of the last couple episodes I think. I believe it was when he is upset after learning about the upper command working for the humonculus from Roy.
And we also see Basque Gran taking his job *very* seriously, no surprise that guy made Brigadier General.
Kimblee is such a brilliant character! Extremely messed up and twisted of course, but at the same time he gave them a reality check and spoke the truth - did they become soldiers thinking they wouldn't be asked to kill? That would be entirely illogical.
Even the sentence with a sniper sometimes feeling pride in their skill despite it taking lives. And especially the part about never forgetting the faces of those they kill, because those faces and those who witnessed it will never forget you.
The series in general has some great instances of horrible, horrible people speaking the truth. Bradley's "A human life (no matter whose) is only worth one life" as well, for example. That sentence by itself could be beautiful and admirable - no one is bigger or worth more than any other human, and believing so is arrogant - but the context of Bradley and the situation he says it in makes it a horrible one.
Killing in the course of battle against enemy soldiers is one thing. To be tasked to carry out genocide is quite another.
[SPOILERS]
The line of Bradley as a double meaning. It is cold and cruel, but it is also hinting at his nature of Homonculus. One ishvalan is only one life for the blood sacrifice. It's just a question of numbers at this point.
about what kimblee said tho, i cant really see it that way.. because sure a soldier should be prepared to kill but only ever other soldiers during a war.. collateral damage is one thing but being asked to blatantly murder innocent civilians?? i dont think any soldier would expect that to be part of their job, because it shouldnt be
@@mjbull5156 You live in a country that has comitted a genocide in your lifetime, and I know for a fact that you aren't torn up or conflicted about it. You don't even consider it a genocide. You probably think that "the troops" should have their assess kissed for comitting it.
@@jrdnlyr Kimblee is 100% correct. You are just totally brainwashed by your real-life fascist government. Soldiers murder civilians. Artillery shells and bombs do not differentiate between soldiers and civilians, and all modern wars require shelling before infantry capture a city. If you are a soldier, you are an active participant in killing civilians, fullstop. Grow up and reqlize that Saving Private Ryan is not real life. In fact, SPR is way more childish than this literal cartoon aimed at teenage boys.
I love Kimbley as a villain. He's such an irredeemable monster, but he's got a consistent philosophy that informs his character and even has aspects that are worthy of consideration. Hawkeye might not have become as determined as she did if Kimbley didn't force her to face everything she's done and reckon with it.
Those Riza cards (intermissions) are , the first one in the past(look at the hair), and the second one in the present. You can see some differences (something in her back, and the long hair in the second one). You can also see her back when she is in the shower and it has the same thing as the second card).
the squeak squeak edited in during Ange's shame filled head shake...
flawless, amazing... I love it.
That sound file edit for Ange shaking his head at the halfway point killed me.
Fire intro 🔥 love your reactions, this is absolute favorite anime series!
Can't wait until we get to Chemistry - Period.
This is such a powerful episode, especially told through the eyes of the people involved. Roy, Riza, and most of all Armstrong.
yep, Hawkeye had her dad's research tattooed on the back. His research was fire alchemy, so Roy very much has seen that research or he wouldn't be able to do what he's doing now. Also, the tattoo is now damaged .......... I wonder who did that ............
Roy and Riza have such great chemistry
Kimblee is a very interesting character, can't wait to hear your thoughts on him later on
7:25
yes Kimblee is a mad psycho.
but there is also respect and wisdom in his words here..
out of everyone there present, he shows the most respect to the people he's killed..
''The one thing worse then death is to avert your eyes from it.
Look straight at them when you kill them.
And don't ever forget them, cause i promise you that they won't forget you''
He's a Realist, saying or feeling sorry isn't going to help them or their families.
This is a war, it is what they signed up for.
''Did you expect to put on that uniform and not being asked to kill?''
Their horror and feelings of sadness/sorrow are misplaced here..
They are in shock at what they've done, not actually sorry for what they've done. (actual grief comes after)
if they actually felt that way they would have never fired that bullet or used that alchemy in the first place.
Kimblee doesn't feel grief for others in the first place cause he is clearly a-moral, but he does call them out on their logical but misplaced/mixed feelings here.
you came here with loaded gun in uniform on command, you did your job and shot them.
and now you're going to cry and whimper for them/at what you've done instead of owning up to it?
thats a disgrace to them..
don't EVER! try to somehow cussion the experience you've had of killing/shooting them.
cause they will never forget it, so neither should you, it would be a disgrace to them, their honor, and their death.
Don't forget, cool mustache Basque Grand got taken down by Scar several episodes ago. And Giolio Comanche, the whiny one who said they took his leg... he's monopoly man. Scar took care of him too. Scar is somewhat justified in taking down war criminals. In my opinion.
Cool mustache guy was taken down at the beginning of the episode we met Nina, so it makes sense they don't remember.
@ryanakers1372 Good point. Maybe it's why he yells so much. He's always so forgettable considering what's going on around him. Just a loud, forgettable, good for nothing braggart. Should have learned from Armstrong. Now that's a man that knows how to combine brags with class and back it all up with action.
The only problem is Scar wasn’t just going after war criminals he was after any State alchemist. Ed was a child during the war and while Shou Tucker is a loathsome maggot he wasn’t a part of the war either as he only became a SA 2 years before the start of the series.
@@Atom_of_pluto Yeah... he really needs some advice from his master.
Some stuff that got cut
More scenes with Winry's parents treating people on the battle field even if they didn't appreciate it, even refusing an offer to go back to Resembool. Also Kimblee was sent to kill them but Scar had already done it by the time he got there.
There was also a Scene of Armstrong trying to help two ishvallens escape but they're killed by Kimblee in front of him.
Kimblee is a psychopath and a complete nutcase, but he did had a point when talking to Riza and the others. You cannot commit war crimes and then act like a poor victim. Having someone order you around doesn't completely erase your responsibility. I'm glad that Hawkeye has recognized this and is prepared to take responsibility and do what she can to make up for it.
Yep, completely agree!
Defending & protecting ur country against invading immigrants in a state of war is honorable. Kim was justified even tho I agree he shouldn’t have enjoyed it so much. #teamkim 🤷🏻
@@lastcuneyt3334 The Ishvalans did not invade Amestris, it was the opposite. Amestris is constantly increasing its size by invading foreign countries and annexing them into its own territory. Same with Ishval that was annexed against their will. During the process of annexation the incident with the "accidental" killing with the Ishvalan child was the fuse for the civil war that later escalated to the Ishal genocide
@@lastcuneyt3334 The fact that you didn't even know that the Ishvalans aren't immigrants already invalidates this bullshit. Amestris wasn't "defending" itself, they were the aggressor. It's like saying the Nazis are justified in killing everyone they invaded because they were defending their country which in both cases included elders, children and non-combatents. It's the textbook definition of a war crime
@@lastcuneyt3334 bro hasnt watched this😂 you came from aot and start acting like a 🤡
Yes 🙌 😊 FMAB reactions
Kimblee and others are the same(committed the same atrocities). They were just, affected differently by the war
And that's part of the point: war is fucked up. Of course Riza feels a little bit of joy in being a skilled sniper, at the same time she is using that skill to kill which makes her feel shitty. It's a huge contradiction and that's why it's so damaging for a person. Kimble merely decided to accept that pride and joy in killing without feeling remorse anymore
About Armstrong, he did go back home, he was dispense after refuse/complaint about the war, that's why Roy and the others have higher patents than him and he is major, the same as Edward who entered the army years after. Is the minimal patent from an alchemist.
Dang it man. If I wasnt trying to pack up to move I'd be watching these OP covers on repeat with my Gibson in hand. You've been killing it with them so far, cant wait to hear how you do the final one
Omg just noticed how the extermination order was a Star Wars reference
Al is just so stinkin' cute, you gotta love him!
Bradley “all lives are equal”
You “omg what a horrible monster”
Probably the main reason Marcoh wants Scar to kill him is so that he won't be forced to help with the plan that Father has - remember, earlier Envy was threatening that they'd kill everyone in his village if he refused to help, but he also knows that if he goes along with it the whole country might die. If he kills himself, the Sins might still destroy his village out of spite, but if someone else kills him and it's clearly not "his fault", that's the best chance of saving them
Basque Grand gets a bit more developed in the manga. When the leader of the Ishvalan people asks to negotiate a surrender, his commander orders the troops to continue the genocide. Basque kills the commander and the nearby troops pretend he was killed by a stray bullet.
@6:45 My dude felt his life at risk for a split second
Something I really like about the whole war and the state alchemists/military is how not every soldier is portrayed as being evil or corrupt. Sure, there's some who are enjoying the carnage, but there's more than likely just as many who wished they didn't have to do it and would rather peace. We see this with Armstrong and Mustang, as well as Hawkeye and others we meet later. People may look at the miliary as one big hivemind, where everyone thinks exactly the same, but that's far from the truth. They're basically stuck in this situation with no way out. It's either fight and kill or run away and face harsh punishment by being a deserter.
I am so exited for you cover op 4. I think you're really going to enjoy it
al throwing his brother under the bus for some cheeks 😂😂😂😂
Kimblee is such a great character. he's a sociopath, but an intelligent one with a weird sense of honor. Fun fact, the voice actor for kimblee is also the voice actor for future trunks in Dragonball Z/Super (Eric Vale)
2:49 Old Mate Bert
there was a hint of Kimblee and his philosoher's stone in his alchemist name; Crimson Lotus Alchemist
If you remember just a couple episodes ago, when Ed used Envys stone to get them out of Gluttony, Envy said the souls in the stone were just energy by that point.
People are killed in the circle to be used as a sacrifice, and their souls become the energy that powers the stone.
this series is goated af is so dark but so good
What always amazes me about some reactors is the sympathy they have for the killers more than those being killed. "what it's done to Mustang"? No one made Mustang do anything. I have more respect for Kimbley because he knows he chose to be there... they all did, he's not lying or making excuses.
that scene with mustang and master hawkeye always reminds me so much of rurouni kenshin. specifically samurai x ova's where kenshin argues with his master about wanting to join the revolution and use the skills he learned, but his master forbids it.
Kimblee infuencing Riza was something
My interpretation of Kimblee is not that he takes pleasure in it exactly (though he obviously loves making explosions), more that he takes Pride in his work.
Dude, we need double episodes reaction hahahah 20 minutes isn't enought for me to have a meal
Putting a spoiler tag cus im not sure if this scene already happened, someone can correct me if so:

Armstrong did try abandon his post. Iirc in a flashback earlier on we hear Armstrong being reprimanded for disobeying commands and see him similarly visibly distraught. I always assumed he was originally ordered to be an active state alchemist killer like Kimblee, Roy, Grande, but by refusing he was instead ordered to build enclosure walls to prevent escape.
I am pretty sure Roy did get to know Riza (Lisa, if westernized) pretty good, I bet during his studies at his master he visited him home a lot, especially later when his health declined, so he was around her a lot. And also pretty sure that he saw the back tattoo, I always wondered about that. Which father does something to his own daughter? Or did she consent and it was sort of a backup plan not to erase the knowledge of flame alchemy, but to make it somewhat "invisible" in that it is not documented anywhere officially... welp... except a human body of course. that was always a tad strange to me. maybe roy learned it from a paper and they destoryed it afterwards so he indeed hasnt seen the tattoo or knows about it. IDK about the manga, but the anime leaves it pretty ambiguous.
Everyone hates Kimblee and with good reason, he is a total nutjob, but he often has a point. Kimblee is someone of also very loyal and straightfoward character. He has values and adheres to them, even if we do not share them. He hates hypocrites and people who do not follow through with their own decisions and supposed values and idelogies they subscribe to. that is why he admires people like the Rockbells or Ed, they have certain principles (i.e. do not kill, being a pacifist, helping people) that they abide by at all times, even in extreme situations, just as he does... just with the totally flipped moral behind it. he is all about personal responsibility
First love your vids❤❤❤❤
In the flashback, Mustang's master tells him he isn't fit to learn flame alchemy, then tells him Riza has his research before dying. So his master couldn't have taught him flame alchemy, and yet Mustang knows it. Yeah, he's seen Riza's tattoo, and studied it extensively. 😏
Well I won't spoil it, but I will say this, everything is more than what meets the eye.

Discussing Roy spoilers below:
At this point in the anime isn't Roy already using the special fire alchemy or am I misremembering something ?
He is, they were just depicting how he received the code for the flame alchemy, which was tattoed on Riza's back. If you take a closer look at her tattoo, you'll see that the transmutation circle he has in his gloves is also tattoed on her back. Roy had to learn all that info from her back. Remember all alchemist hide their research in special ways
Well, if i remember from my watching half a decade ago...
Doesn't his special alchemy remove the restriction that he cant use his fire when he's wet & also lets him perform with far minimal conditions?
....
yeah Hawkeye gave him her father's research.

Wrong! it is called Flame alchemy not Fire. And the back is just the research, and unfortunately he already saw her nxked a long time ago.
The tattoo on Riza is her father's research and Roy saw it a long time ago (before the ishvalen war) cause he can use flame alchemy.
