Thank you thank you thank you!!! The issue with the border card warp stretching out and becoming more slack than the rest of the pattern when I use swivels to unwind it has been driving me nuts!
I always watch this video every time I weave, just to refresh my memory & make sure I'm tying them correctly. You're an absolute genius!!! I know NOTHING about knots & I never would have thought of this in a million years! Thank you so much for sharing this
I just started tablet weaving on an inkle loom and this is a fantastic idea! Going to have to go buy swivels and key rings now before I warp up for my next project; it's an all forward pattern, so I know the twist will get unbearable.
Thanks for the demo. This helps solve my problem especially when turning cards only one direction, such a tangled mess. The key ring is a great idea too. When I used to fix one trusted line it loosened the lines and sometimes messed up the neighboring lines. Excellent explanation!!
As a newbie, I just want to thank you for a professional tutorial - got the inkle, got the swivels, got the pattern, got the yarn just waiting on the cards. I look forward to watching many more of your excellent videos.
Excellent explanatory video. I was able to adapt the technique to an Inkle band that I am weaving. I didn’t need to worry about twist so didn’t use key ring or swivel. I needed to add a length of fine silk thread to one of my warp threads that was in the middle of the warp. I created a loop in the side near the beginning of the weaving and created the knot with the other end of that warp thread. I was a bit worried that the slippery thread would not hold firm, but I was able to get the Correct tension and it is holding steady! Thank you. Peace. D Taylor, DVM
thank you so much! I just start with tablet weaving and feel super prepared now that I know how to set up in this convenient way ;) I never thought fishing materials would come in handy. Can you please tell me what kind of yarn you use? This looks finer and smoother than normal knitting wool. Is it crochet yarn?
You're welcome! the best thing about crafting is ANYTHING is a supply ;-). The thread in this video is Aunt Lydia's #10 crochet cotton from herrschners.com. It's and tight and resist fuzzing.
hi may i ask you whare did you get youre wee swivel things from please.i am a beginner at weaving so im still learning how to set up a inkle loom and do the cards without them all tangleing up and they would just do me fine
Hi, before buying swivels watch my video comparing ball barring vs barrel swivels. Ball barring swivels make quite a difference compared to the ones in this video. I buy on Amazon. You can also check your local fishing suppy shop or Walmart to see if they have swivels.
Thank you sooo much! Fantastic idea! But wouldn’t it be easier to thread the starting ends through the card before knotting them to the key ring? Especially warping for a long weave...
I know that this video was posted at least four years ago, but, I just came across it. I bought a new Schacht inkle loom recently and I would like to use your keyring-and-swivel method of eliminating twist. However, I am concerned about the metal damaging the pegs of my new loom. Has this been something that you have experienced? Anyone? I am ready to warp my loom. Should I only use swivels?
This reply is 4 months after this question, just to keep the timeline intact. I also use a Schact inkle loom, and when I do card weaving it is very easy to advance the warp so that the swivels and keyrings (I actually use jewelry clasps so I can also unclip each card if needed) are never actually in contact with the pegs. Advance the whole warp until just before the metal gets to the peg, weave as much as you can, and make sure you don't advance the warp again until you are able to pass the metal bits past the peg and still have your next pick in the working area. It takes some practice, and with the Schact style inkle looms having their tensioner placed so that the working area shrinks as you weave, it sometimes gets really frustrating. I have ripped cards while turning because I didn't keep my swivels lined up when I started, so I had a much longer area I didn't want on a peg, which dramatically shortened the working area as well. Band weaving is cool, tablets are cool, go do some weaving.
I use fishing swivels and have not noticed any damage where the metal meets the wood, I'm pretty rough on my warp too, and have not experienced any issues.
Excess twist is quite a nuisance and this seems like a great idea. I am wondering how you prevent a snarled mess from happening with the long ends of the adjustable knot? As the twist builds up and the threads turn so will the long ends. Also wondering if you find the knots slip and loosen as you work? Maybe I am not making the knot tight enough.
Yes, snarls can happen but I try and make the tails as short as possible or cut off excess to reduce tangles. As for the knot slipping, if you tie it tight enough I don't find it slips. The friction of the threads is usually enough to keep it from loosening.
This is a fantastic video, thank you so much for showing your method! What do you do for very long bands? I find that once I go above a few meters, I don't know how to "store" the excess. Would you put your swivels closer to your work or at the very end? I am entirely lost :)
Hi, I'm glad you liked it. I'm not sure what you mean by "store". The loom in the video can handle up to 12ft and I just push the twist out every once in a while. The swivels are attached to the beginning and the end of the warp. Does that help?
Thank you for watching! I have done inkle weaving and yes you could do this but I think it is too much work for it to be worth it. Inkle is 1 thread at a time and can be continuously warped. With tablet weaving, some patterns cant be continuously warped and so that's why I came up with this method.
Good video, twists make it so difficult. It appears you're using an Inkle loom, so the warp has to be continuous, correct? The rings and spinners must travel as advancing? Figuring out warping process is a little difficult to picture.
Thank you. Yes, its a circle with the beginning and end attaching to the key ring/swivels. Otherwise you just follow your normal path for your inkle loom.
The reason I do for is just that I found that to be the optimal number. Most patterns have an even number of cards and so 4 feels like the right amount. Also when removing the twist the more swivels per ring and the harder it gets to separate them from each other to allow them to spin. So after much experimentation 4 is a good number.
I wanna say the keyring is 3/4 inch but I have no idea what the swivel size is. Sorry! I bought the swivels and rings so long ago. I would just go to a sporting good store and see what size looks right to you. Walmart also sells fishing supplies. Also be sure to check out my swivel video as there are 2 types: barrel and ball barring. I recommend the ball barring kind.
I used standard 1 inch keyrings, but you don't have to use the rings. For me they're just a convenience for holding the thread while I tie the knot. But you can do just the swivels by themselves.
Thank you thank you thank you!!! The issue with the border card warp stretching out and becoming more slack than the rest of the pattern when I use swivels to unwind it has been driving me nuts!

Looking to start some table weaving myself soon. Excellent video. Thanks.
Thank you and good luck with your tablet weaving journey!

This is pure gold. Brilliant!!! Thank you so much for sharing. Newbie here. Hope to see more of your work in the future. Greetings from Mexico 🇲🇽
Thank you so much! ❤
Thank you for showing this so clearly. I have these swivels on order and was wondering exactly how to use them best. Brilliant!
Awesome video! I'd love to see one about the loom specifically.
Noted! It's my own DIY loom so its a bit of a mess but I do want to do a review on looms at some point. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for this! I've got my inkle loom warped up like this and so far it's working great!
I think I left a message on your original video, but thought I'd leave another - excellent video! Thank you so much for showing how this is done.
You're welcome! I'm glad it's helping people!
Thank you for sharing this. The keyring idea is great. Off to the dollar store to get keyrings and fishing swivels.
Thank it is an excellent video Me gusto mucho la forma en que esta explicado lo voy a hacer con tus instrucciones Saludos desde México 🇲🇽
Gracias! Glad you liked it and hope it helps!
Brilliant method. For dealing with edge card tension
Thank you! Glad it is helpful for you!
This is AWESOME! So super helpful! Thank you so much for sharing this 👍🙏😁
Wow! Thank you so much for this. I have to try it immediately. This will save me so much frustration.
It definitely helped me. Glad I could help!

Excellent instruction. I hope to see more videos from you. I now “get it”.
Thank you! Glad everything 'clicked' for you! Now if I can just find the time to make all the videos I have planned.
Great ideas. Thank you!!
So smart! Thank you for sharing!
Can you give me a link to the key rings you ordered? I just now ordered the swivels. Thank you! I love your video
A good tactic, though I believe that the knot is a tautline hitch, rather than a hotline...
Thank you! Thank you! THANK YOU!! This has helped SO much!!
Glad it helped!

Hi! Glad you enjoyed the video. You can set up your cards any way you like. This is just my preferred method.
Your Informations are really helpfull, thank you 😘🤗
Thank you very much!!!!, super useful!👌😍
You're welcome 😊
Thanks for this great video! That’s a very useful knot!
Thank you! I love this knot and have been finding I use it more in everyday life as well.
This is so helpful, thank you!!
Great instructions and super great idea!
So is there a reason that you're doing four cards per key ring?
No real reason other than keeping the amount of key rings to a minimum.
it's alpinist's Prussik knot.

Great demonstration.
What happens to the swivels when you advance the warp? Do they not get caught on the pegs?
If you loosen your tension before advancing then the rings just slid right over, no issues.
great demo ! thank you
Thanks!

what sort of knot do you use to tie the front of the warp to the key rings?
It's just a square knot
Great video thank you :-) I'm not sure if you inkle weave but if you do, have you ever used this same method of warping for that?
Thank you for watching! I have done inkle weaving and yes you could do this but I think it is too much work for it to be worth it. Inkle is 1 thread at a time and can be continuously warped. With tablet weaving, some patterns cant be continuously warped and so that's why I came up with this method.

I may just be sleepy, but how is the yarn/thread going to untwist when you've got them tied up like that?
That's what the swivels are for. They release the tension.
@@KnowKnots yes. But it seemed the knots are on the wrong side... unless the group of 4 always turn the same direction. I'll watch again.
@@KnowKnots ok. One could tie each yarn. that'll work.
what size swivels do you use? I assume the key ring is just big enough to fit over your peg with the swivels attached, right?

I bought size 4# (not to be confused with 4/0) from Amazon. They are 1” long.

I used standard 1 inch keyrings, but you don't have to use the rings. For me they're just a convenience for holding the thread while I tie the knot. But you can do just the swivels by themselves.

Yes. Yes I did.
