    I actually don’t think it’s a scam. It’s a hair overpriced, but for someone like me who can BARELY change a watch strap, this is probably a good place to start to learn how to mod watches. Entertaining and informative as always. Thanks!

    Good job mate, the watch turned out really nice! You put the finger on why I don't get a DIY watch club kit. Although I believe it's rewarding to finish the job and even if I don't mess it up, any dust left under the crystal would drive me mad.

    I was gifted a similar kit for my birthday recently. It’s from a British company called Watch Supply. I haven’t assembled it yet but it looks like a well made kit, video & paper instructions. You have the option to get it with or without tools & the Pepsi diver with tools I was given is £249. I wouldn’t want all the models they make but then I don’t particularly think most diy watch club watches look the best & they’re significantly more expensive.

    I think company making a bit money is necessary. LEGOs sells plastics, but they put lot of design, packaging, advertising and shipping into the price. Mainly we all buy the total value and effort as package, not sum of the parts. If a person has the knowledge to source parts thats compatible and find lower price including shipping cost from different companies, that person deserves to save some money. The DIY watch club got some special deals that make it sweeter incase people prefer a lower price. I did brought a watch from DIY WATCH CLUB. I enjoy assembling the watch like a LEGOS and got the experience to know how difficult to install that second hand the first time!

    It's not a watch I would buy assembled ... but i like the idea of having a "project" you can play with and assemble yourself.
    It is more about the experience than the watch.
    Agree over priced however.

    • @LumePip
      @LumePip  5 місяців тому +1

      Definitely - a bit like those experience days driving a Ferrari or whatever, it’s a memory you’re creating or an ambition you’re fulfilling and it’s the chance to do that which you’re paying for, I suppose. And it is very nicely packaged. Still a touch overpriced I think, but certainly not as bad as has been made out

    I have some experience with building watches. With this kit, it would be relatively easy. But don't underestimate the mounting of the seconds hand. That is not easy. For that kind of money, buy an Islander or a Seiko, or whatever.

    you can get instructions for free on the internet and tool and parts cheaper, but when it is your first time assembling a watch, it is very convenient to get this set. I did one and enjoyed it enormously! Especially because I got it for £180 in a sale!

    I think the first time cost is a bit pricey with the leather kit but after that you only have to buy the components for another watch because you already have the tools so the cost at that point is reasonable. Just my 2 cents.

  • @dunderhay9169
    @dunderhay9169 5 місяців тому

    Have you worked out the value of the tools? Also, for the first go at building a watch they take all the worry out of sourcing compatible hands/dial/case/movement etc. When I started modding Vostoks, I found some of DIY watch clubs UA-cam content very useful too. I agree it is a little expensive, but not as much as you suggest.

    • @LumePip
      @LumePip  5 місяців тому +1

      I thought the content was excellent for someone like me (ie somebody with no idea!). I did look into the value of the tools, or rather I costed up buying all the equivalents parts, but couldn’t find a sapphire dial, and I think it came to around £158, give or take - I do acknowledge that’s not going to be as high quality stuff, but not sure the audience would necessarily be bothered. It’s us making the watches, so I’m not necessarily after Patek-level finishing. I think a roughly £100 premium would be fair, given this is convenient and is an independent business with costs and overheads, staff to pay etc

  • @joefitzy
    @joefitzy 3 місяці тому

    I think the main problem is that the movement is already assembled. It'd be much more appealing if the kit came completely disassembled.

    I’ve never modded a watch. This does seem a tad expensive

  • @duncanhamilton5841
    @duncanhamilton5841 5 місяців тому

    Don't think that price is too bad when you consider the large kit it comes with, and the fact firms have to make a profit. Always slightly bemused when people start listing components and proclaiming something is worth X, without any consideration to the cost of being in business and the need to pay people.

    • @LumePip
      @LumePip  5 місяців тому

      I appreciate your point but I’m not saying everything flippantly. I did cost up a kit (complete with crystal press, which this doesn’t have) along with all the parts to build a watch with similar specs (but on a bracelet, not rubber). It came to around £158. I agree there would be a premium on a kit like this, but maybe a 200% premium, even with much better parts and better finishing, is a bit steep. I’m not saying it’s bad - it’s not, it’s really very decent and I stand by the compliments I paid it - and I’m sure keeping the lights on isn’t easy, but I can’t exactly factor in their quarterly sales figures and how much Paula in HR is budgeting for overtime into my reviews 😅
