I adore these videos. What nobody seems to mention is how young you were to be pulling the kind of drumming on Diorama, off. It was quite frankly, stunning.
This song, and album as a whole, opened up a whole new world for me when it was released. A world within a world you might say.. 😉At the time, I was a young drummer that was hungry for something a bit different and challenging. Something that just wasn't being fed to me by rock radio of that era. When I first heard your drumming on Tuna In The Brine, Across The Night, Without You, and others, my mind was blown. It gave me some massive motivation to explore new styles and techniques and to not just settle for basic or safe drum grooves. These songs, and Tuna in particular, had some real meaty drum fills and grooves that I was able to latch onto and adopt into my own songwriting. From ghost notes to coated drum heads, I followed your lead and learned more about these subtle options available to drummers which can really have a powerful impact on a song. Getting out of your comfort zone as a musician can be scary, but once you try it, you will be surprised at what you can achieve. And that's why I rock 🥁Thanks again for producing these insightful videos. Much appreciated!
Thank you Ben for this channel! Being a drummer and Silverchair fan, I never realized how articulate you are about not only your drumming but the understanding how the drums complement a song, whether that may be fast, slow, waltz, swing, ect. Nice job!!
Yes! Thank you for your art. You're a beast. I love watching you beat the shit out of those drums. We can't have Silverchair back but this is just as good 😊
Tuna in the Brine was a far cry from the initial grunge mood that initially drew me into you guys as a band. However when I first heard the song, it inspired me to branch out of my comfort zone. To listen to different styles of music. After diorama I wanted to seek out the amazing motifs and sounds offered by other genres. Once I did, it inspired me to bring those techniques and ideas brought from genres not normal to rock and let my drumming sound more tasteful and interesting. Like you did with Clyde Stubblefield and Jabo Starks from James Brown’s band. I rock because there’s so much more to be discovered and brought out in my own playing and it was this song, and Diorama as a whole, that opened my eyes. That is also why I am proud to say that Silverchair is now my favourite band.
The drumming in Diorama is amazing. I was always amazed at your ability to move from the heavier sound to this more experimental era. Every percussion is perfectly executed. I'm also glad that you and Chris have created a book to tell about your experiences in the band. The bond that you have created is beautiful. You are family.
This is by far the most beautiful and emotional song I've ever heard in my entire life. God only knows how many songs I've heard. This is such a masterpiece ! Thanks Ben for this instructive video about my favorite song. Take care
I love Silverchair's work. But Diorama is probably my favorite album. And Tuna in the Brine is full of art and the cadence the drum provides is so delightful and elegant.
I've loved this song for 20+ years. The three of you are amazing, and I'm so happy I found your channel. I hope you all find a way, but shit is complicated and sometimes it doesn't work out. You guys made masterpieces, just FYI.
Tuna in the brine changed and continues to change my life in a positive way the last 20 years I love this extra insight into the song thanks so much for making this.
My all time favourite song for the last 21 years (and forever more). Thanks for this one Ben, I’ve been waiting for it. Such a brilliant series. Can’t wait for the book.
This album holds a massive place in my heart, especially as a drummer from Newy myself!. Always found your playing on this to be immense - reserved but with lots of taste (like Tuna, swing feel with some killer fills sprinkled in). A huge driver in all the tracks - thanks for this one, mate.
Your evolution as a musician is inspirational. Bringing this inspiration to my little one to rock for the next couple of generations. Silverchair forever
This is just plainly amazing- The Behind the Beat series rock! Such a throwback to hear these tunes but then realize how well they’ve aged. Thank you Ben you for another fantastic deep dive! Greetings from an Ecuadorian fan!
I listen to Silverchair every day and have done so since 1996 when I first discovered you on MTV in my teens. I saw you the first time in KB Hallen Denmark in '99 warming up for RHCP. Best day of my life. Then I went to Grosse Freiheit in Hamburg followed by the two concerts in rock am ring and rock in park in 2003. What a great time. I have rocked in life ever since and kept your music following me throughout my adult life. I will never grow tired of your art, you rock Ben.
Diorama, un album que cambió mi vida. Una obra de arte. Gracias por estos vídeos!!!!, una gran inspiración para los que tocamos, o intentamos hacerlo.¡¡¡¡Ben, the best!!!!!
Best Chair track. Lovely asteras behind you giving the Diorama-ish touch. And although I love Sabian and I rock for many reasons, I'm overseas (Chile), and I remember being one of the finalists for the "Straight Lines" video back in 2007 and being dismissed for not being Aussie.
This is one of the best drum compositions I ever heard. You had a lot of Roger Taylor vibes in ya but your tamed the knowledge and used it your own way. Great Album, great compositions and great, great beats by mister Gillies!
This is a really great video. I love how the live drums are mixed just a bit louder than the recording, and your groove is killer. The additional drumming on the “Painting a lie” is sick, now I’m going to hear that whenever the track comes on. The ‘booom’ on your high tom is awesome, really nice tone. The fills on “changing everything….” are really powerful. Nice work sir! I saw you guys on tour in Portland Oregon at the Aladdin Theatre on the Young Modern tour. Great experience, thank you for coming all this way! I rock because I’m a NORMAL cat dad! 🤘😎😻😽
It's one of my favourite songs. It's got so many amazing sections, and interesting layers of instrumentation. Your drumming fits in perfectly with the 6/8 waltz feel.
Honestly, Ben, this Behind the Beat only gets better and better. I have been learning SO MUCH with your explanations and influences. So nice to know about James Brown influence, man!
Yeah this is a top 10 song… like in my entire life. Certainly my favorite silverchair but it’s almost beyond definition… it’s less a song and more a piece of art.
Hi Ben. Loving the series again ✌️I don’t rock but my 7 year old son definitely does 😂 he has followed in my love for silverchair and has just picked up his first drum sticks, he has been banging out to Freak lately and is loving it. You have definitely gained a new fan in him. Keep up the great work of inspiring the youth.
Love your kit design and color choice. When are you picking winners for the china and splash's? Either would make a great new addition to my kit please 😊
I think I need to win that symbol because I still have a drumstick I managed to get my hands on from one of silverchairs secret gigs in Sydney that I attended back in the day. One of the crew passed it to me after the gig. It has ‘Bens Wood’ printed on it, 😂😂😂 So the symbol would go perfectly with my drumstick! Might need to run a comp to win another drumstick so I have a pair! Haha My hubby is about to purchase a new kit too. So would be good timing! 🥁
mate your playing here is so open...flipping inspiring. Still trying to work out what kit your playing. The tuning system looks like Slieshman, but the mounting seems different...what are you playin? Always sound s great. Oh, what makes me rock...still can't know. NORMAL cheers
Oi, Ben....uau!!!!!!
The whole song feels like a hard-rock waltz. My wife got me into them - I couldn't stand them growing up, but they evolved into one of the greatest bands ever. I told her Tuna in the Brine is barely music - it's more like an astrogation chart to transcendence. Now, if we could only get Ben to do more songs like Darkwater.
hello from Quebec Canada! quick question, the musicianship in silverchair from beginning to end has always been incredible wether it be live or in studio, the musical discipline only got better and better as time went on, a fine marriage of subtlety and complexity with an outcome of amazing songs, i am sure you guys had a lot of excitement during recording songs so extravagant like tuna. and im sure you also had a bit of an "oh shit" moment when it came to discussing how to perform it live and keep its grandiosity as it was on the recording, ive seen performances where yall had at times two keyboard players im assuming one was mainly covering the piano parts and the other was embellishing with other string or horn patches very profficiently but i am wondering did you also have to employ tracks to cover other orchestral elements and if so was that something that you embraced or found challenging? as such a powerfull live band that was prone to spontaneous elements during your live performances what became harder and what became easier as your recordings spanned more diverse sonics? Thank you for these videos and your contributions to the creative world over the years. much love and respect.
You're not just a great drummer, but an intelligent drummer. Tuna in the brine show cases this. Many drummers wouldn't know how to articulate this kind of music.
Yo Benny. Awesome brother. I just need to ask one question. It’s been bugging me for YEARS since this album came out. At exactly 3:40 on your video, there’s a noise in the recording. It’s on the album too! It’s like a crack sound. What is it? I need to know!! Haha.
Yeah, it's kind of progressive. Love it! I hope you all listened to progressive music, if so, I'm almost sure you'd like it, is in fact one of my fav genres in music. I recommend you Animals as leaders and Opeth (specifically for you, I think, above all, the albums Damnation, soft songs of Blackwater Park and Watershed and Pale Communion). Great explanation dude, thank you!
Arguably in my opinion, one of the greatest songs ever written
Just beautiful on so many levels
Absolutely
Agreed
you are objectively correct
My favorite Silverchair song.
It still blows my mind how incredible you all were at such a young age.
Maaaaan…. I’m a multi decade Chair fan, but learning from Ben like this is very fresh. It opens up the songs even more then I experience. Thank you
I adore these videos. What nobody seems to mention is how young you were to be pulling the kind of drumming on Diorama, off. It was quite frankly, stunning.
True to that, I was lucky enough to be in my teens hearing this heavenly music
You can see how pride Ben is about Silverchair. Such a legacy like this can't simply be forgotten or abandoned.

Ben, Please release more play along tracks! Having so much fun jamming along to your drum parts. Thanks!
Diorama is a road trip album. Every tune is amazing. Start to finish. Put it in and just let it play. Same with Alice in chains Jar of flies album
Oh man that addition to the breakdown is actually kinda nice lol
it was sick ❤❤
Yes! Thank you for your art. You're a beast. I love watching you beat the shit out of those drums. We can't have Silverchair back but this is just as good 😊

Same here except from a guitarist perspective!!!!!
Here it is! Been waiting for this since you started the series Ben! 🎉 Brilliant work brother... 🙏
Wow!! Can't wait! We love you Ben!!
Diorama is the most underrated and overlooked record EVER
Thank you for all of your insight, Ben. True legend
Thank you, greatest song ever written by any Australian band. You’re my hero
Diorama is a masterpiece. It’s got everything a great album needs, dynamics, great composition and great instrumentation.
Such an amazing trippy song. An adventure to hear and even more to watch u explaining ur approach for it. Priceless! Thank u so much Ben!
The added hihat motif was 😘👌
I've loved this song for 20+ years. The three of you are amazing, and I'm so happy I found your channel. I hope you all find a way, but shit is complicated and sometimes it doesn't work out. You guys made masterpieces, just FYI.
It's such a journey this song and I enjoy every bit of it! It is far from normal.
Tuna in the brine changed and continues to change my life in a positive way the last 20 years I love this extra insight into the song thanks so much for making this.
Silverchair’s best album!!!
That's an awesome insight Ben, thanks.
Been in love since the first time I've heard it.
My all time favourite song for the last 21 years (and forever more). Thanks for this one Ben, I’ve been waiting for it. Such a brilliant series. Can’t wait for the book.
This drums on this track have always reminded me of the drumming on ELO’s El Dorado. Love the heaviness of that crash wash.
Best song ever. Thanks Ben!
This album holds a massive place in my heart, especially as a drummer from Newy myself!. Always found your playing on this to be immense - reserved but with lots of taste (like Tuna, swing feel with some killer fills sprinkled in). A huge driver in all the tracks - thanks for this one, mate.

Hello Ben! I love your music, here in Brazil we are very much your fans. thank you, success.
My favourite song always
Cheers. Thanks heaps Ben. Hope all is well. ❤
This is just plainly amazing- The Behind the Beat series rock! Such a throwback to hear these tunes but then realize how well they’ve aged. Thank you Ben you for another fantastic deep dive! Greetings from an Ecuadorian fan!
I Dig the New Hit Hat Snaps at the "Paint, seeing..." section.
With some Boom Clap, rolling snare snaps for good measure.
Ben Jammin
I rock because I'm already making room for that new china in my drum set. One of my favorite Diorama songs, thanks Ben for these videos!
My favorite song Ever, no one compares to this
Awesome work Ben !! One of the best . Thank you for share this with us .
Haha, that new bit was cool. "Fuck you, song, I drum when I want."
yesss, my favorite song of all time. SO glad to see one of the band members still taking about it.
Favourite track of Silverchair, even have a "tuna in the brine" with a Tuna tatoo ♥️
I listen to Silverchair every day and have done so since 1996 when I first discovered you on MTV in my teens. I saw you the first time in KB Hallen Denmark in '99 warming up for RHCP.
A band is only as good as it's drummer. Great breakdown!
This is one of the best drum compositions I ever heard. You had a lot of Roger Taylor vibes in ya but your tamed the knowledge and used it your own way. Great Album, great compositions and great, great beats by mister Gillies!
Your comment reminded me that the first time I heard this song, the first thing that came to mind was Queen.
This is a really great video. I love how the live drums are mixed just a bit louder than the recording, and your groove is killer.

It's one of my favourite songs. It's got so many amazing sections, and interesting layers of instrumentation. Your drumming fits in perfectly with the 6/8 waltz feel.

love this video series. thanks ben!
Just Brilliant! ✨️⚘️

Amazing song, we need paint pastel princess please !!
I rock because I don't use a double kick pedal. I just use a normal single kick pedal.
I love this song would be amazing to see a video where you describe all the equipment you are using to record your drums!

SOOOOOOOOOOO GOOD
Another amazing analysis. Well done. 👍🏻
Also, I rock because I preordered your and Chris’s book from across the pond. 🇺🇸 🤘🏻
I always wondered what the claves were in the break down? Was that done digitally?
