Nah, Bizarre Ryde 2 the Pharcyde was the one. Labcabincalifornia wasn’t nearly as cohesive, and Fatlip was already on the way out and not on it as much. And Dilla had like 3 songs or something-most of the songs just didn’t have that same kind of vibrant energy and humor that the first album had. That said, if they could combine that fun energy of the first album with caliber of Dilla beats featured on the two singles … THAT album would have been a classic for sure! But most hip hop heads would say Bizarre Ryde is a classic; even the grumpy, New York gatekeepers loved that album.
In addition, The Pharcyde wanted their music to evolve for their next album; they stayed in New York for a while and wanted Q-Tip to produce labincalifornia But Tip was too busy to produce due to his work with Nas Illmatic and Mobb Deep The infamous. So he referred J Dilla to be their main producer which gave them a different sound compared to their first album. I think if Tip produced labincalifornia they might have more a commercial success. Remember the Pharcyde was on the cover of Midnight Marauders; so since they were tight with Tribe they wanted to be legit artists for Hip Hop. Personally I like their second album.

They were seriously my FAVORITE hip-hop group in the early 90's. They were the epitome of hip-hop, and the beat for "Passing Me By," and "Runnin' (J Dilla version) are two of the greatest in history. Even the first album cover is legendary. Reminded me of BeBe's Kids.

Growing up and processing hip/hop in Compton/California in the mid 80's and 90's those who rocked with them were considered squares. Which contributed to their growth being stunted.
So many groups from the 90s grew apart. They were too young to realize how important it is to keep the core fanbase. you may not achieve super stardom but all over the world people will continue to support your work.
My sister was the producer’s , John Martinez aka J swift’s girlfriend throughout the entire making of Labcabincalifornia album. She lived with John in his Hollywood Hills home that was minimally or barely furnished. I believe there were more instruments , albums and studio equipment than anything else. She would tell me how the guys disagreed with each other and John over things which is to be expected because this is a group and not a solo thing everyone has their own creative ideas. But, overall she said it was a fun house it was a fun environment and it was fun for her to be a part of witnessing the formulation of everything coming together and all the creativity in the room. My sister conveyed to me the pressure and stress that John was under from the record label. John had a particular vision for this album and for the group as a whole. John did not, and to this day still has not really been allowed the opportunity to show just how talented and gifted he is. He is/was definitely under rated. The pressure and stress was too much for him and unfortunately what started out as something done occasionally to help one stay up and create, slowly and surely turned into a full blown addiction, rendering him broke, destitute and homeless. I felt really bad for John after learning about his situation after seeing him in a documentary that showcased him and probably some others (I don’t really recall others I specifically remember John because I was hurt by what I witnessed.) I hope he’s happy and doing much better. I think I heard they were trying to deport him back to Spain. I don’t know if that’s happened or not. He’s a good dude. Too bad his sister’s career never took off like it should have. God bless the Martinez family!
