  • This mine plan (surveyed by Richard Thomas in January 1825) in the collections at Kresen Kernow, is a surface and underground plan showing Pednandrea [Pedn-an-drea] and Wheal Sparnon sett boundaries in Redruth, Cornwall.
It's labelled 'Pedden-an-drea [Pedn-an-drea] and Wheal Sparnon mine sett in the parishes of Redruth and Gwennap'.
The plan also shows Fore Street, Higher Fore Street, Wesley Street, East End, St Day Road, Sandy Lane, Green Lane, Ford's Row, Falmouth Road, Trewirgie Road, Church Lane.
This large mine plan includes scale; total acreage of sett; table recording names of landowners and the proportion of the sett they own; names of land owners within the sett and those owning land adjacent to the sett; table showing names of shafts and adits and their elevation above sea level.
Kresen Kernow holds thousands of mine-related maps and plans. The main collection is the abandoned mine plans from the Mining Record Office (MRO collection). This includes plans, sections and maps of most of the abandoned mines in Cornwall.
This is still vitally important even today, when surveying for housing or buying an existing house.
KResen Kernow looks after over 60 000 plans and maps and these are useful for property history or to see how the landscape has changed over time.
This video is part of a series called - David's Dazzling Documents, as we celebrate Archivist David Thomas' last six months in his role here at Kresen Kernow before he retires.
