    The crate that has the note "deliver to club obi wan" is a reference to the club obi wan that appears at the beginning of The Temple of doom when indy is in shangai.

    I especially love the fact that in the chamber of eternal youth Mara’s face is projected smiling and then when he opens his eyes he quickly frowns and starts to decay!

    I was there opening day i had one of those at&t decoder cards, they were to occupy the guests because the lines were LONG and always crowded so you had time to decode the walls. they just handed them out at the start of the temple. Im very sad to see how.....cartoon-like it looks now. it legit looked and felt like a REAL temple when I went. Its been my favorite ride ever since. I went on twice a visit. The fire I felt sold the danger. The fog minimizing the view was also necessary to hide what the ride was actually made of. I had no idea the chamber doors at the beginning were rotating it really felt like your vehicle went down a separate track. I also had no idea we were supposed to be floating into the chamber of doom. thats incredibly fascinating. I can remember back and yeah it did feel diferent during that particular part of the ride and I actually felt off but didnt really know why. and I didnt know there were treasure chambers at the end of the hall of promise either!!! i thought the hall WAS the chamber! I always thought Indies robot at the door looked good too. as a kid I didnt really understand the story aspect of the whole thing. Like I thouight the jeep was driving over really messed up temple floor. And Indie was just keeping back some monsters or something. Maras chamber was so cool to see the other vehicles driving through and Mara trying to kill them and see and FEELING real fire blowing up was so cool. The skeleton tunnel looks crappy now. they look so goofy. The skeleton chamber scared the fuck out of me I hated sitting on that side because they looked like they were falling on top of you. and they looked real not glow in the dark. The snakes holding the bridge had smoke coming from the mouth but not lights. I assumed it was the lava steam or something. sitting on the other side of the jeep though left you open to being attacked by the giant snake. It looks so sad now. It was HUGE and its head whipped down so fast and close and its fangs comes out and it makes a loud hiss. The spirit of mara looked cooler before in my opinion too. it didnt always work. It felt like Mara was following you trying to kill you and it was subtle almost like, "did i see that?" The fireball was my favorite part because it timed up with the music and your car drives down into the darkness. I think it stalls in the dark because honestly it was scary as fuck. You already experienced all this horror and then in the darkness your car engine turns off and the chamber is PITCH BLACK. like you see NOTHING. and then the rat log comes out of nowhere and honestly before you could see the projection just fine. I always knew it was rats. And youd only assume so because you hear the squeeking and then the sound of the metal as they fall onto the car hood. i think they used to have string hanging from the ceiling too that would rub on your face but maybe not. I agree also I always took the knife hallway as they were decorated walls with hidden knife traps. it was a cool effect i liked it. Indies lines during the boulder were randomized too. I remember him saying many different things. Club Obi Wan was the nightclub that Willie sang at in hong kong where he drinks the poison and has to locate the antidote that was flung onto the dancefloor. lastly...... yes about the smell!!!! I know that smell!!!! and its true it smelled like a genuinely ancient place occupied by diesel fueled generators and jeeps. a musty yet exciting smell.

    • @michaelj2276
      @michaelj2276 Рік тому +1

      Two things. Firstly, thank God I'm not the only one who loved that smell and secondly, the projection effects do indeed look cheap and - to use your words - cartoon-like. It's really, really sad. My last trip was in 1998, and I'm not so sure I'd *want* to go back now. I think I prefer my memories...

    The cavern of bubbling death used to use real water that was dyed red. The lava rocks underneath would make it glow. The mara face worked as a giant water fountain, you can still see the water inside the head but it's really low. A piece of concept art shows a ghost mara appearing from the center of the head rather than the scrim, it might've been a budget cut effect, or something they couldn't get working on time.

    In the avenue of voices, in 1995, that part where the entry and exit are separated by an easy to duck under or jump... rope... was the secret tunnel we took many times to cut the line and reride Indy and the temple of the 5 hour line. Karma has a way of catching up with you though. That first year everything worked. Even the ICE rubble. Best ride ever!

    I know this is old, but I felt like I need to express how much I absolutely love this series. The ride, as you definitely know, has a very strict height policy and I remember the day I was FINALLY tall enough to ride it. My late father and I would go to Disneyland almost every other weekend (sometimes our only Christmas gift was annual passes back then) and this was ride the both of us wanted to experience the most, and it was such a touching memory to recall, considering it's this ride, Indy, and the history of well... everything that made me decide to double major history and anthropology (archaeology is a subdisipline, but it's a VERY tough industry at the moment). Thank you for bringing back a warm memory from a past I miss and a man I wish was here. Thank you making me laugh, and bringing such an infectious smile to my day. Subbed and can't wait to finish it up and watch your Tower of Terror review. You have a fantastic production and I encourage you to follow through on it, if that's your aspiration.

    That part about the different rooms where Mara is supposed to grant you his gifts is fascinating. I remember riding this as a kid and it seemed like the vehicle would make a turn into one of the rooms. But the videos of the modern version of the ride I see all have the vehicle heading towards the center door. The way you explained it is very fascinating. I do miss the older version of the moving room with the dummy doors.

    I'm loving this deep dive series, this ride has made such a huuuge impact on me!
    The defunct effects don't bother me so much, but what kinda grinds my gears is the excessive blacklight paint. Before, the whole ride was mostly muted, earthy tones that made it all feel much more real. It's more vibrant now, but definitely has more of a disco vibe than an adventure vibe.

    I love Disneyland history, and I'm a big Disney fan. I grew up going to Disneyland, got a pass in 4th grade, around 1999 or 2000, had one until I started working there in 2012 (and still working there). Today I was thinking "I need to find info about old Indiana Jones..." specifically the 5 moving chamber doors. I knew about a lot of things you shared, but learned new things too. Thank you for putting together something so amazing! I've only watched these first 3 episodes so far, but I'm looking forward to watching more of your content!
    Also, a side note, I had the pleasure of riding this with the lights on, it totally ruins the magic! And while in the queue, the part before the bat cave, you might notice a few square openings in the ceiling (above where guests are exiting), above that is where guests or cast members can get into Walt's apartment above Pirates!

    My father worked at Hughes Aircraft in Fullerton and brought home the Orange Country Register (OCR) when the ride first opened they had a massive section on it including a translator so you could translate the writing on the walls. I traveled up from San Diego just to see the ride. The opening weekend I went through twice and they really tossed you around (which was part of the fun) I was amazed they did not include seat belts as it felt like I would be thrown from the car at any moment.
    Star Tours opened and once again I traveled up to Disneyland and went on Forbibben Eye twice but now they had tamed the car down so you hardly had any movement (up, down, side to side) and the ride was not as fun.
    In the OCR article, they admitted that the ride was over budget and had to trim a few corners specifically in the final room with the darts (puffs of air) going by. If you live in Orange County you might be able to find an archive copy of the article at your local library.

    I think that the burial chamber that appears in the in-universe map (at 16:34) suppose to be the mummy chamber from the main ride. The map shows like a possible hidden tunnel connecting to it, and it could explain the king mummy that appears in the room. So it would mean that in that part of the ride it is implyied that you are driving under that queue rotunda.

    I think they could easily replace the rubble with a jet of brown mist on the ceiling. But I understand that to do that you would need to tear the roof off. Also I think that holding room would be a better rat chamber. Have the vehicle stall out as the room fills with rats and the jeep starts working again just before they can enter your vehicle.

    • @Disneylander
      @Disneylander  3 роки тому

      Yeah, it'd be cool to see something in place of the rubble (though it would be the coolest if they could fix the original effect).

    i will say the snake and the scrim of the blue ghost af mara were much more terrifying in 1995 since the snake looked more convincing and much more fast with its movement while the scrim was designed differently yet looked more hellish like a demon and had cobra-like teeth compared to the new zombie ghoul looking version although sadly these 2 features weren't documented all that well since the snake room was poorly lit and the scrim would be very non-visible to riders plus this ride used to be much faster so good luck catching them on video
