    So we have sparred enough but serious question my gunite pool was clearly well built (before me) it was put in some time after 1986 and not any cracks but it is discolored in places so I coated with 2 part epoxy paint and reapplied after 4-5 years. It’s just fine but really prefer the plaster. What do you think about the roll on replaster products vs what you are doing here?

    • @UltimatePoolGuy
      @UltimatePoolGuy  4 роки тому +1

      the products you are mentioning will usually have bonding issues over time
      the chip out process is to both remove the old plaster as well as create a rough surface for the new plaster to stick to
      there is a product out there called "remuc" ??...not sure of the spelling...and this is an epoxy type product that rolls on to a pools surface

    Thanks for the videos and the humor. I have already demoed my pool and getting ready to replaster. Any chance you can tell me what is the correct mix of cement and type of sand needed so I can mix myself. I am in Hawaii so it costs a lot to have someone come do it and we don’t have a lot of money. Thanks in advance.

      i believe it is 2 bags of sand to 1 cement ...we us white sand and white cement also called marble dust ...hope this helps ....where ever you source your materials could also help you with your mixes for your region

    Does grout go on the bottom of the waterline tile, then the plaster meets the grout line? Or does the plaster go all the way up to meet with the bottom of the waterline tile and there is no grout? Thanks for the knowledge!

    • @UltimatePoolGuy

      If this is new installation or you've demoed everything all the way out then yes plaster goes all the way up to the bottom of the tile no grout

    great video would have like to see pool with water in it. 20 grit finished seems rough. all 3 layers applied same day. with the gunite left so rough especially the steps the plaster finish would seem to be over an inch thick to cover the gunite? how long does replastering last as my pool is 25 years old with no replastering just a few stains but now top step is starting to come loose. i was thinking of patching the top step and painting all steps. thanks

    Does the plaster must be done with the truck? Or can it be done by hands? And what is the best material that proctes against water

    • @UltimatePoolGuy
      @UltimatePoolGuy  2 роки тому +1

      the work shown in this video should be done with a truck and experienced guys
      for job quality and job safety reasons
      there is "hand pack" method/technique
      where you can use a mixer and wheel barrows
      you will need more time and more men for this and it is more difficult but the swimming pool industry has a history of this type of construction as well
      good luck

      There is calcium prills in the mix to act as an accelerator
      So the stuff is burning as soon as it comes out of the mixer

      los angeles

      full demo and haul away of old plaster
      usually 2 // sometimes 3 coats all applied at the same time from same batch mixer etc..

    • @UltimatePoolGuy
      @UltimatePoolGuy  3 роки тому +1

      it is not the widely preferred method...meaning there is no demolition...but I have seen this done in a few rare occasions where a plaster surface was placed on top of a pebble finish and it did work...plaster was able to stick to the pebble finish just fine

      Hello
      A 20x40 pool is a larger pool
      You should check with your materials supplier and your batch mixer size for the correct amount of pigment for each batch
      And then make sure to be consistent with those measurements throughout your job

      The national plaster council recommends replastering your pool every 7 years but I don't have any clients that maintain that usually it's every 10 to 15 years or so and during that lifespan you can acid wash the pool two to three times to extend the life and the durability and the aesthetics

    Is that any type of regular black paint ? I’ve heard of that if there is exposed rebar. Cutting it out and filling it with mud.
    What’s your thoughts ?

    • @UltimatePoolGuy
      @UltimatePoolGuy  2 роки тому

      if the areas are bad enough repairs are made where we will cut the bad stuff out and mend in new rebar pieces
      on a lower level simply putting paint on affected areas that are lesser and no repair is needed
      a high quality paint that advertises rust protections is usually what we are using
      hope that this helps

    Hi Mike, I am helping some friends in the UK restore an old concrete pool. We have screeded the floor and I have rendered the walls with a sand, cement and SBR mix. We were going to paint the pool but I'm wondering whether a pool plaster finish would be better. We'd like a blue colour if possible but that's not essential. Whatever we will have to do it ourselves. Will pool plaster be a better option than paint please?

    • @UltimatePoolGuy
      @UltimatePoolGuy  3 роки тому +4

      yes
      a masonry product will always be superior to any painted surface
      most pool paints are rubber or lead based and will rapidly deteriorate with chlorine and acid (detergent and corrosive)
      however there are some regions around the world where a painted surface or a vinyl liner pool is widely used and normal and in those regions a painted pool would be recommended
      for your application if you can tolerate working with plaster i would recommend that
      if it unreasonable to consider that or financially out of reach then move forward with a painted surface pool and enjoy the pool area
      hope that this helps

      @@UltimatePoolGuy Thanks very much Mike. We're about 52 degrees north here in South Wales. I'm guessing that means we'd really be better off plastering the pool if we can do it well but failing that could get away with some sort of pool paint. I'm leaning towards plastering if we can do it well. Sider-Crete is a roll on and squeegee smooth plaster apparently. Can you recommend an alternative which might be available in the UK? We can mix our own if we know what to use but the problem may be finding an aggregate that is fine enough to roller on

    My spa/pool combo was white plastered on the same day in late October 2019. Both were filled in less than 24 hrs. The water balance has been perfect. On day 12, my spa began leaking from the light. The silicone repair didn't work. The plumbers came and pressure-checked the system and everything checked-out okay. The electrician came and properly repaired the light fixture 10 days later. The problem is that the spa was at various levels of empty and the plasterer said it takes 30 days to cure. (The builder said it's cures in only 14 days.) Cracks formed from the tile line down to, and along the bench seats, obviously from drying-out (air was low to mid 70s, during the day and 50-60s at night with low humidity.) I ran into a different plaster guy who said that if those cracks don't dissappear, due to re-hydration, you should make them re-plaster it. IS THIS CORRECT? After 3 days, with my mask and snorkel, I can still see faint, hairline cracks. I haven't paid any money, yet. I'm going to re-inspect it after this weekend. The plaster company's owner, who's a certified plasterer, came by and said it was okay, while I was not there. I don't know who to trust, and I don't want to have comprimised spa plaster with a shortened life because it cured too fast. And, I'm sure the builder doesn't want to pay to re-plaster the pool. WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND, PLEASE? THANKS!

      Spa's not leaking anymore. My concern is that the plaster life-expectancy has been shortened due to it not being completely filled up for 7-12 days. Do you think the plaster has been degraded? And is it true that if the cracks don't disappear, it should be redone? Thanks.

    • @UltimatePoolGuy
      @UltimatePoolGuy  4 роки тому

      There really is no guideline about what should or should not happen the language with the Contractors State Board is defects associated with workmanship or material that were foreseeable at the time the work was performed
      ☝️ that is going to be the language that allows for legal recourse as well as identifying work that needs to be redone
      It is common knowledge and widely accepted that pools that receive finish work need to be filled immediately that applies even to pools that get a high-end finish such as Pebble or glass they get acid washed the following day and are still filled with water within 24 hours of the work being performed
      If your project went 7 to 12 days without any attempt at being filled with water I think you then have legal recourse using the aforementioned language

    • @UltimatePoolGuy
      @UltimatePoolGuy  4 роки тому

      So if you are unhappy with the finished product and feel as though the work has been jeopardized you want to use the language that this was poor workmanship or a defect in the material that was foreseeable at the time that work was performed
      I hope this is helpful and please keep me updated or let me know if more information is needed
