I would say that was probably true.( Not anymore) America's withdrawal from Afghanistan is directly linked to this action. The personnel in Afghanistan are now in the Pacific. Australia needs nuclear submarines like a fish needs a bicycle. They will not be functional until th 2040s.
I would say that French now has some available but in fact they have done nothing in five years since the contract was signed except hike the price and put back the delivery date. I am sure they would be happy to sign a similar contract with Vietnam though if they have a spare $60 billion.

Australia's unhappiness with how the French were handling the Sub deal hasn't come out of the blue, France wasn't honoring the original Sub deal so Australia had every right to pull out, Australia's discontent with how France had been handling the contract has been well documented over the last 5 years so it shouldn't come to anyone's surprise that they pulled the plug on the deal. France started changing what had been agreed upon (costs, build locations & timeline) soon after the original contract was signed. They talk about how the Sub contract with Australia being cancelled is a betrayal of good faith yet they themselves did exactly that when they changed what had been agreed on to such a degree that it's surprising Australia didn't pull out years ago. I hope the US & UK do a better job.
Morrison should of said that from the beginning instead of giving compensation for lies and cost blow out for non existant subs.

Australia is currently facing a big threat from evil CCP regime and France Subs are due to deliver way back at 2040 .. Aussie didn't have time to wait till then... As a European citizen I am happy with AUKUS. It should be awake up call for the EU. The European members of NATO should and must up their military starting immediately, there is no time to lose. Our common adversaries are getting stronger every day. Wake up Europe and get your act together. The new generation has enough problems, build your military up so we have the power to defend our allies, friends and ourselves.
I think many people in the comment section isn’t understanding why France is so angry about this. They spent millions in demonstration and other things for the past few years. They even missed out on other smaller deals to focus on this deal. Australia always acted like this deal was going to go through. Then all of sudden a they heard that US is getting it instead. Now, the company “naval group” will probably need bail to recover from the loss they made in Australia. I think any country will be upset if they were in France’s position.

That's just business. Australia has the right to pick whichever deal is best for them. If you bid for a project you, you must also accept the costs if you don't win the job. This idea that countries should communicate with each other about competitive bids is bonkers. As for Macron, didn't he just create a defence and energy alliance with the UK and 39 other countries? Now that's hypocrisy. Remember, France has just blocked Spain from building an oil pipeline from Africa to Spain to force EU countries to buy their nuclear energy. France thinks about it's own best interests as does every other country.

France sold Australia the Brooklyn Bridge! A Huge Con Job.
In 2016 it was to cost 23 Billion With Australian Content and delivered earlier.
As soon as the deal was signed, it was changed to 90 - 120 billion, Not to be delivered until 2040 and Very Experimental.
Not ONE Rivet has gone into metal as of 2021 (5 Years) but Australia still has to hand over money. Australia is not a Money pit for the French. Australian's were angry with their government for the Time wasting, cost blowouts, and lack of work in the Sth Aust. shipyards. France is now shocked into being Diplomatic, showing concern for South-East Asia. This wouldn't have occurred if they weren't woken up by the loss of their free money pit.

Aside from the fact that the French submarine contract was terrible for Australia, the reason that the Australians were ultimately better off moving toward AUKUS is because they understood that the French were never willing to commit to security in the Indo-Pacific region. The EU is onboard with French whining because the European establishment grabs on tightly to any excuse to emphasize the importance of strategic autonomy. Yet, they do nothing.
They are getting protection without even having to pay anything. It goes without saying that aukus will defend Europe if it’s attacked!
Besides we are all independent nations so we can do whatever we want with our most trusted allies that speak our language.

For those who don't know, Australia did not ask anything to the US, they went for UK first, to ask nuclear subs, but UK has no power of decision on it, because their nuclear tech has been given by the US, and for any decisions related to that technology, they need the approval of the US first.. in other word, they are dependent on the US, unlike France who is 100% independent

I 100% agree. To think that Australia should preference France over the UK is laughable. Friendly countries compete against each other al the time, that's just business. Australia is probably much wiser to go with UK/USA partnership, the technology is better and it won't be made in China.
The US took away a 66 billion dollar contract. Uhm I thought it was the Australian taxpayer paying for all of this, not the US. Australia has every right to spend its money where it sees fit and does not need other countries to tell it who to spend it with. France can just go on sulking, there is very little doubt that Australia will cancel the deal in accordance with contractual terms. There is nothing more to be sais.

Security and defense issues are not decided on the EU level, but in the capitals of the individual European nations. What Borrell, von der Leyen and Michel says are just symbolic posturing in order to please the French a little and their statements carry no hard political relevance. Individual European nations are certainly not "rebelling" against Biden over AUKUS. The French are mad because of the lost 66 billion dollar deal, but says nothing over the AUKUS alliance per se.

Surely, any countries can make alliances with whichever country they want. Macron just created a defence and energy alliance with the UK and 39 other countries. I don't see anything wrong in this as all of these countries are committed to NATO article 5. Contrary to WION, Le Penn's party has no interest in pulling out of Article 5.
