This game was the biggest mind f**k of the year hands down. Playing it the 2nd time and seeing the humans help the blob escape because its all part of the "cycle" is amazing and mind blowing. When the blob falls threw the ceiling into the glass display case and therefore foreshadowing the games ending was pure storytelling genius.
I think during the first portion of the game the player is in control of the boy and the goal is to escape. but after drowning and being attached to the machine the blob gains control of the boy through the player. The Blob then uses the player to make the boy free it. However, the Blob too is being control by the scientists by making it believe it escaped. Because in the end you cant control something unless u make it believe it has free will.
derick ramdeen of the scientists are controlling it, why are they killed & ransacked? The scientists were betrayed by their creation due to their abuse/experimentation on it, but the blob dies at the end anyway as it cannot live outside its confinement. Solace is made a happy ending because the blob, even though it must die, is free
"in the end you cant control something unless u make it believe it has free will." DAMN, THAT'S DEEP. just like "you cannot kill what u did not create"
I'm gonna jump on the bandwagon and say this game was sheer brilliance. The tone and atmosphere was so enthralling no matter how you interpreted it. I still don't fully understand and think that it is intentionally left open ended. Just the themes though of an oppressive society and one lonely boy trying to escape in a dark world that's rather mysterious to you as the player, it's just a compelling concept I think. I also believe that the simplicity of the gameplay really helps this game shine. Sometimes less is more and often it seems indie titles are better than triple A titles. To finish though, the end of this game left me in awe with my mouth literally hanging open and I can't say that about many forms of media. Inside deserves all the praise it's received in my opinion and honestly more people should check it out.
the alternate ending represents you as the player controlling the boy. You can see a MC helmet in the background with a person attached, surrounded by monitors and a desk chair. That is you the player and it also makes it look as if you hung yourself. This echoes what the boy is doing. He is effectively killing himself to be free of the control. And that is how the hanging would be a metaphor for us being controlled by the game itself to experience the lab ending that was planned all along. As there is no free will in games, all the options and choices were at some point laid out before you, you take one of the already prefabricated timelines. And can do this over and over again. There is no way of getting out, besides turning the game off. In our actual world, so far this can be true as well. There is no way to tell if everything s random or was already preselected by a greater force, and the only way to see what is beyond is to die. Although it is twisted, dark and grim, it makes a wonderful point about our entire life.
I think you missed out on a subtle but very important detail. When the boy unplugs the facility he kneels to the ground just like the "zombies" do when they have no input, implying that he too was a zombie, which could support your theory that he is being controlled by the blob. Very good in depth analysis overall; great job!
Your mode of presentation is increasingly becoming more inviting and conversational. Feels like I'm right there with you, getting great insights of whatever you're examining
I don't believe the "escape" ending actually provided a real escape. The diorama showed the exact same scenery the ending provided, which suggests that the light at the end actually paralyzed the blob, instead of freeing it, much like the mermaids froze whenever you trained the light of the mini sub onto them. The blob is probably contained again after all of that work to escape, & then continues to control more people to try & end its own suffering. This is ultimately accomplished by the boy "unplugging" everything underground. This isn't exactly a happy outcome either, if the boy is deactivated as a mind slave after destroying the connection, he probably also disconnected everyone else in the entire world; maybe the world had reached the point of no return, & the only way out was to put an end to humanity. There is no good ending to this game, just the choice between perpetual suffering & ending everything to stop that suffering.
Good video. I never noticed the model of the beach at the end, I think it represents that even though the player thinks they're disrupting the system, in reality they're still trapped inside the systems plans. It knew exactly what you were going to do the entire time, as if you were part of a larger experiment or trapped inside some simulation.. Or most likely they're just playing into the hands of whoever created that facility.
You've been consistently producing great content, Ryan. No idea how you manage to do a new essay just in a matter of a couple of days. Keep it up! This made me go watch hours of videos with similarly fascinating theories about the game. "Inside" is a mind-blowing piece of art: pure visual storytelling. And everyone seems to interpret it in their own way.
even though this is my favorite Theory video concerning the ending of this game, it doesn't include my favorite Theory. I forgot where I first read about this Theory, I'm just going to call it the Rogue scientist Theory. It states that the setup you see in the alternate ending of this game isn't a metaphor for the player character, but is quite literally the setup a government scientist would use. Somebody who invented a lot of the tech used in game, wants to destroy everything they're doing. The Collectibles that you destroy in order to unlock the alternate ending essentially act as a signal booster so that the scientist can control the boy throughout the game. By destroying all signal relays, the boy is free from the Rogue scientist and is able to power down on his terms.
The game deserves an award! I played this in my darkest days of the Corona virus. It helped me pass so many brutal waves and gave me something think about. There are also so many times where you see mutiole channels or other experiments in this VAST underground works . There look like scores or other experiments in that facility.
The people who seemed like they were trying to help you weren't actually trying to helping, they were trying to trap you. No, I do not mean the water tank of sorts they put you in near the end, I mean outside when you're laying in the grass. The exhibit you crash into shows their plans and how to get you out.
I didn't see the stage before that the blob walked through with the crate. That is so odd, but I'm so glad you noticed it and brought it up. It's amazing what this company created.
God, what a masterpiece of story telling through the scenery this game has. It's just such a beautiful game that leaves you with so many ideas and thoughts. And every person can infer their own views of the story. What a review this video was as well. It's just so well said and I agree very much. Thank you.
Ryan, I think you're right about the monster controlling him. And not only that, but the way the boy controls the people, and that one time used a person to control a person, like the control went down 'levels', you think about that, and it makes sense that the levels go up too. just an idea.
What I got from it, everyone in the game is being controlled by the boy. The boy is the enemy as he knows how to stop everything, knows what the blob wants, gets an ability from what we ASSUMED was an enemy, knows how to stop the pig from going crazy, knows how to stop the dogs, the people are only looking to capture him not kill him as they only use tranquilizers and flashlights only the animals hurt him, he is able to trick the system when he is walking through the line, he has way too much access to the most important things in the game, seems to know how to use the helmets, the blob did not advance/evolve until the brain was in it (the boy is what wakes it up and he knew it needed that), he knew how to get to the secret control room in which it looks like a place a person would observe the entire facility while being capable of controlling it, knows how to use the helmets and how to control the people. He was trying to advance the project not fix it as he has a complete lack of regard for human life as those are the only deaths he actually performs. I think the lab is actually his facility and an experiment got out of control, them trying to capture him seems like them trying to correct the problem while him opposing them is trying to advance it and give his experiment a brain. They are literally trying to prevent him from reaching the end goal, when he becomes one with the blob he doesn't seemed bothered and he facilitated the entire thing leading up to then. The game is cool but I think with its weird ending and him trying to free the blob rather than contain it points to the boy being the enemy. Plus we don't see anyone using those helmets other than him. The doctors and scientists seem like they are the ones out of the loop as they gawk at the blob when it starts changing, he seems to be the only person who knows how to advance the blob's evolution At least thats my working theory, but I acknowledge it can go either way whether he is an antagonist or protagonist. But ultimately it seems like its a game intentionally ambiguous at the end to give you the ability to choose what it means to you, same as limbo. Several conclusions can be drawn from it and thus more than one person is actually right about the ending because what it means to you is your own personal opinion and no one can really say its wrong.
I think this boy wasn't the only getting controlled by the blob, remember at the first attempt to avoid the lights that will hit you with the electricity? There were 2 other people getting hit by the electricity,in that place normal people (the ones who aren't getting controlled or literally slaved) or the the ones getting controlled wont be there,so I guess this boy wasn't the only
In a way, the blob that controls the boy chooses to end it's own life in the secret ending. It's factual not the player, but still the blob that controls his movement. The secret ending could then be more explained with: the blob chooses to escape from the society. With that, the sightseeing would be over, the blob would also be limp. A harsh exit from the gameboard the controlling society has created for the controlled.
One idea I had due to the secret ending is more of a straightforward idea that the singularity has been achieved but the masses are unknowing and are being controlled. The boy may be uncontrolled and an experiment to see how humans react to the world the computers/ Ai created. Just a loose strung theory but still a theory :)
i agree with everything you said...almost. you were pessimistic about the individuality of the blob after it made its final escape. while you believe that there will always be control, I tend to think at an organic way of life, society could operate without control. like how animals work for the most part.

The scene showing all of us players sitting as a blob, exhausted, as a 'light' shines on us, is the game creators' way of finally making fun of us all, collectively! It is sadistic, to say the least. The word 'inside' is a play on how the game engulfs you inside itself. The point of it all is to rub in your lack of free will in your face! Why are you playing this game? Escapism? But there is no escape!! This is the biggest, most artistic 'go f yourself' to the players, in the history of gaming!!
The game Inside is about IVF treatment, and therefore a symbolic journey of a sperms journey to the egg. If you do some research into IVF, the science and the emotional journey it cjhanges the way you see the game.
Why would the blob disconnect the boy in the secret ending? Also what are those spheres? Who put them there? It seems there are two forces at play, not just the pink blob trying to escape its oppressors.
The water seems so liberating, finally a place where we have no linear path, like freedom from the rains of gravity. But to us humans, its alluring charm is but a lie. Great vid and analysis, do you have a degree in sociology or did you study it? Just curious as it was interesting seeing an analysis of Inside through a sociological lens.
Just adding that I always thought the blob was the collective gaming community looking to free themselves from reality. In the alternate ending when the boy disconnects the mind control equipment he is free to do as he chooses. I only watched once and worth every second, loved the theory and I hope I'm not repeating something you said because what you said was great!
question: EA has announced that it is going to make a Battlefield tv show ( or more realisticlly attempt to ), now they have a lot of options. they could it do it like The Last Ship, Hogan's Heros, or could do a more serious approach and do it like Saving Private Ryan. They could make each season a standalone, in different time periods and diferent branches of the military ( possibly even different nations). they could use the show to setup the next game or vice versa. they could do like bad company did and do it in shorts, i think 30 minute episodes and use characters from the game. also speaking of bad company, there hasnt been a good or memorable battlefield campaign since the bad company games despite EA andn Trying. i guess im curious what your opinion is
A great breakdown and the ONLY thing i am 100% sure on (with the ending and game) is that everyone who finished it...... *Smiled from ear to ear and went WHAT the actual fuck did I just finish at the end!*

I like the idea that the blob's goal was not to rest at the shore, but to drop into the sea. That being said, that ending is a failure to break free.
