- Playdead's truly first and last complete story.
This script is a bit old, but I've wanted to make something like this for a long time. As I never saw anyone make something like it for the game. So here it is!

My jaw actually went slack when that happened

I think inside is my favourite game ever I played it a couple night ago for the billionth time and stayed up all night and then the next day played it again
It’s very replayable.
If you love inside you would LOVE little nightmares 1 & 2 if you haven’t played it
The world record for this game is 59 minutes and 58 seconds. There are 114155.251 years in 1 billion hours. At the time of your comment the game had been out for 7 years. Not quite enough time to play through it that many times, let alone do anything else in between.
@elliotthill7008 🤓
I also downloaded it i was going for limbo(b&w) and thought i should go for the inside seemed preety same then i just keep playing and just go into it , though i want to complete the game but when i reached my character go into that ball of human some sort of experiment then it was somewhat disturbing but i have watched the fullmetal alkemist so it was no big deal to grasp it and it was very late so i go to sleep and completed it the next day it is just great game , loved it very much
I want to point out at 30:04 if you don’t move the people on the other side of the glass start pointing at the human amalgamation behind you.
Inside is definitely a masterpiece. One of the greatest games ever made. This game makes more of an impression, stayed with me more than any game I’ve ever played.
Even if a game is bad. If it gives you a feeling or impression that you find interesting, that is valid! I am sad Playdead won’t make another game together tho 😭
Love inside so much
@@Sm0k3turtso you don’t like inside? I’m confused
Nah just talking generally. Love inside to bits. I just mean that’s how I approach all games. Even ones like SCORN. Yk?
now this is one of the greatest jokes ive ever read, its on the same tier as saying bethesda games are good
Spent about a week on this and the script is a bit old but I made it anyway. The video is a bit too dark and blocky but I think it'll be fine. Thanks for all the support recently! I've got some videos on some movies in the works. But other then that, what would you wanna see me cover?
Idk if you've played boneworks, but it's a great game with a lot of depth.
@@kalasyeditor I made a video on it a while ago XD
@@Sm0k3turt WHAAA I NEED TO GO WATCH IT RN
Maybe an essay on why we have a desire to mod the shit out of Skyrim?
Video essay on totk plz!
At 39:41, I am pretty sure that you can also find a radio that plays the same tune as well near one of the secrets in the city. Still it is wild that they have thought that far ahead when making the secret ending.
There are 3 radios that play this tune, each located near one of the secret orbs.
Among the rooftops, in first upside down room and in the secret using elevator - the last secret, so just before unlocking the tune lever, if you've managed to find all of them at first run. This only shows that this game is a masterwork in terms of level design (and I guess also something like "experience design")!
The echoes and general eerie-ness in the unsettling beauty of the soundtrack is further highlighted when you realise they made the soundtrack for this with a human skull
This shit is the definition of Art
Thanks, Mike. ☺️
This video was amazing. The narration, the humour, and the overall presentation kept me hooked all the way to the end. I'm glad that there's people still talking about Inside in detail.
Glad you enjoyed it! I had this script laying around and thought the same thing. That’s why I finished it!

Very well done.
Inside is one of those games that I whish I could forget and play again.
The theory I like for this game is also that the world was being consumed by water and flooded, that's why there a sections in the game of just water, and why they created the siren so they could see if they could improve humanity to breath underwater.
Inside is why I'm very excited for Play dead's next time. It will take time but I hope it can be as good as Inside.
Play dead won’t make anymore games together 😭
@Sm0keturt13
Are you sure? Seems like they are still operational, I think.
They split into two teams, one worked on Somerville and one is working on a game called Cocoon. Two of the heads had some squabbles for various reasons and so they split.
@@Sm0k3turt Waow, ok I didn't know that. So they are still part of the playdead studio but on separate teams?
They split off from play dead in two teams cause of personal reasons. It’s something between the two heads I think. Do some research!
a very true masterpiece.
I just love every little detail in inside. Even the fact that the devs made music using a human skull for post processing.
Woah. Good stuff. I played this myself, and related to most of what you described, but could not describe it the way you have in this video.
Your channel is exactly why I’m so depressed about the UA-cam algorithmic scene
Just insanely high effort. great work
Thanks man! I try.
How does this only have 2.1k views?! This video is such high quality
Thank you. It’s difficult to get the algorithm to notice me. 🫤
As someone making a sorta fan sequel, this analysis was very useful for setting up some rules on what to not do to my spin off.
Also if you're wondering how it's filmed, it's all gonna be made of drawings and use sfx and music in the background.
Btw, you deserve way more subs!
Thanks! Good luck with your project!
A fan sequel sounds amazing, if it goes along with INSIDE and all...

I've kinda slept on the project ngl lmao
But I planned on it being right around INSIDE's ending and being it's own story. Being about a girl trying to stop another evil.
Sounds interesting, I wish you luck. Btw what is the name and will it be on Steam whenever when it gets released? Just curious. @@aydinmakesthings
Thanks for this video. For my media class the teacher gave us homework over the holidays where you talk about the story structure of a piece of media in a 2 minute short form style video, and inside was one of the option for what you could do a video about. I was having a lot of trouble on how to describe the narrative structure, but after this video I was able to make it much more concise. Just wanted to thank you for this and I will probably watch more videos from you as I really liked the way you described this fantastic game.
You’d probably like Jacob Geller! I take a lot of my writing style from him and Pyrocynicals main channel videos. Just gotta practice!
Thanks for watching!
i love that this game has so much narrative but isn’t a super long play, i managed to finish the whole game in a few days and even though it was short it was still so full of interesting details
Omg , I'm only on 15 mins, stopped on Caroline comparison. Great video. Just thanks.
I love inside, walked through like 3 times and all it was just enjoying visuals, animations and fluid movement. This analysis makes so much deeper experience. So this game even 10x deeper that I thought 😮
If you enjoyed this game! I highly recommend COCOON and SOMERVILLE By some of the same devs. I wanna make a video on Cocoon. As it REEKS of inside in terms of its non verbal storytelling.
I love your idea & theory ❤️✨ hope more people will see your quality content.
Thank you!
I love how unironically this was my first game I bought on an iPad, it was fantastic.
Inside is on iPad?
@@Sm0k3turt Yup!
I still to this day wonder about the shockwave segment. What is that thing? Why would it even have been built? It's far, far too powerful for where and what it is. That things is ripping apart the facility, almost as if the entire building is yelling at you to stop. Stop going deeper, stop asking questions, yet it's just another obstacle.
Nice analysis. Arnt and Dino Patti used about 8 years to develop this game, Limbo was the start. They were thinking about this genius game 2 years before launch of Limbo! Now Arnt is making a new game, and Patti left to make Somerville. He left because Arnt is maybe 12 years in the making of his last game (maybe). If you could understand Danish, there is an podcast Arkaden episode 120 in 3 hours about the making.
I will support your channel, fantastic humour! ❤😊
Cheers from Denmark (where Playdead is from)
Thanks for watching and enjoying! Yeah I loved Somerville and am super excited for COCOON. I always love supporting all kinds of games and media! ^^

Great commentary 👍🏻. It's a masterpiece of a game, I had watched a documentary and it was amazing the amount of time and resources that went into all the details of the game. I had made a game for the PS4 and currently working on a new game that is limbo inspired and trying to come up with a story that's not a story like they did is fascinating.
Storytelling with no spoken word is really difficult but can be extremely powerful!

I do speedrun the game occasionally so I have played it a fair bit, but even after spending many hours in its world, your analysis still brought some findings to light that I had previously overlooked!
When Inside intially came out, I couldn't help but feel that it was really solid but not as great as Limbo, but as the years go by, I feel like it truly is the better game of the two. Despite knowing its mechanics inside (heh) and out and having met some of its developers, there's still so many mysteries in the game. This game is definitely up there as one of my most favorite games ever.
this is one of my favorite games i really just love a story like this with a lack of dialogue where its left to the interpretation of the player or viewer
Inside is a game that definitely has a special spot in my heart. I watched a full gameplay of it with my older sibling years ago and from that moment on I never stopped thinking aboug it.
It left such a big impression on both me and my sigbling, it was nothing like anything else we've seen before.
It soon became my favourite videogame and I was finally able to play it myself only a couple of days ago, but I still remember of when me and my sibling talked about buying a computer/a console for playing videogames and always getting excited about the thought of finally being able to play inside.
No videogame has ever left such complex and long lasting feelings in me.
The Quality of your analysis is always fantastic 👍👍

Did you know that the puppet people actually have an official name? They’re known as “albinos”, I inferred this after looking at the soundtrack and noticing that the track that plays during the first mind control puzzle in titles “albinos”. Pretty interesting.
Fascinating
Hey there, great video! Just wanted to note that an official soundtrack for the game has never been released, I made the unofficial version (it’s on my other channel, Artyom Solomatin) and the titles were given by me also, so these are not valid hints for analysis
Oh I wasn’t aware! Regardless of them being official. I found the interpretations of the tracks appropriate. Thanks for uploading them!!

this should have more views
Thanks man! Spread the word. The algorithm sure doesn’t.

Thanks mate!
Is crazy how there are so many theories out there about a hole bunch of thing to me . Even tho this is all up to you to decide how you see the ending. But this is exactly what I got from the game. Why do we play video games when we could be doing much more with our lives like making a difference weather is spending more times with your family friends kids etc. inside tell me that playing video games is just like any other drug out there and by unplugging your self or continuing to play video games your making the choice to free your self from your addiction and make more with your time then play your life away or stay plugged in because gaming is your only scape we mentally have. So is funny how the game is about escaping but we never really do escape. No matter what you do in a game you are being told what to do and were to do it. So you’re being controlled. On another hand in real life you go to your 9-5 and are being told what to do and when to do it. So you are really never in controlled. So do we really have free will after all?
Inside, Bloodborne,... you have excellent tastes, sir ! :)
Thanks! I like to find the balance between entertainment, interesting talking points and talking about things people are currently interested in (and doing my own thing sometimes)
@@Sm0k3turt Those 2 games are true masterpieces, i can't wait too see the next Playdead's game and for the Elden Ring DLC, and the next FS games :)
Play dead is dead 😭
That’s why the top description on my inside video “Playdeads first and last complete story.”
@@Sm0k3turt Seriously ?! Who is it possible ? there 2 first games where both excellents, had really good reviews and commercial success !
EDIT: Are you sure ? In 2022 they've release 2 artworks of their next game, and i don't see any news of the studio's dead.
They are still making games, but they split up into two studios. One made Somerville and the other is working on something called Cocoon.
Is the music in the intro the battery room music from Stray? That's one of my favorite pieces of the soundtrack. I'm about positive it is but maybe it's just an augmented arpeggio with a really similar timbre.
A few months ago I suggested Inside to someone because of this video and they played it but I still haven't played it myself yet.
It’s from the new system shock actually. Also play prey lol
I haven’t watched the full video yet so i don’t know if you mention this but the start to both games reminds me a lot of Dante’s inferno
Very true. Both games have a descent vibe. The only thing that’s missing that makes Inside better is that it’s not obviously pretentious.
Amazing game.
I really hope the third game is coming soon! Haven't heard even an update on it in a long time, though.
SOMERVILLE came out a while ago. COCOON has yet to be released.
@@Sm0k3turt I meant the third playdead game. I'm playing Somerville now after you mentioned it. Definitely not as quality as limbo/Inside that's for sure. haha. Glad it was on Gamepass.
The theory I've stuck with was that the boy was being controlled by the blob. And once the game ends, you're just deeper in the facility.
You're video was great. The game definitely has a lot to do with control, and the control. The one thing I wonder is, Red's sleeve.
The whole game one of his sleeves are up. And then in the elevator crash, you can see him rolling up his sleeve again if you watch him get his breath back. Maybe I'm reading too much into it, or it actually means something.
That is an interesting detail!
What if the girl from limbo is the original water girl from inside? That in both games your trying to reach your "master". The original game you're controlled by that girl (experiment #1) and that in the sequel you're controlled by the blob. Would explain that things went wrong in the first game/experiment and now they're trying with the Blob.
So you think Inside's a prequel? Interesting to think about
I personally think trying to connect them is pointless as they aren’t really thematically related.
This is on par with Racevik/Whitestar levels of quality.
Keep grinding. The algorithm will pick you up eventually
That means a lot man! I think I’m more D Tier than those legends but it’s a nice thought!
It's a shame gamers these days will never appreciate what this game was...
A true work of art

I just played the game and it was cool though I wonder if they could have done more or expanded on the ideas
I think it works well on it's own. Although I'd highly recommend Sommerville and COCOON if you like similarly vague weird games.
I really like the video, it's very well done. But you really needed to up the brightness in game before this. Sometimes you can't tell what's happening, I still can because I've played it but still.
I know. Big mistake on my part. That game is SUPER dark and UA-cam isn’t great with darkness historically so me being as inexperienced as I am. This was inevitable.
Thanks for watching it though!
Fun Fact: There is an easter egg in the area at 21:38 from the glowing green light behind the door.
I don’t see it. What should I be looking for? Also thanks for watchin!
@@Sm0k3turtYou might've already looked it up by now, but just in case... If you wait there for a while, a shadowed figure will peek through and shut the door.
No offence, but I did find your video somewhat shallow.
For a game this great you could have talked about a whole lot of things like in a real video essay. Yet all you did was summarize the story with poetic terms and sentences. I don't want to discredit your work too much, because I know that there is a ton of work behind this video in the script. Your wording and articulation is mesmerizing, yet you waste it on the literal level of the narrative.
Sure the intention wasn't a 'video essay' but a retroperspective on a game, which I totally get. Making a video about this glorious game is a fine way to express your feelings for the game (which you perfectly did) and to broaden the playerbase that play this game.
Instead of telling the story in 30 Minutes, you could have driven deeper into the specifics for this game. Information about sounddesign and its publishing is somewhat never discussed.
Information like the soundtrack being recorded through a real skull would have been a great addition. Breaking the story into chunks and filling the breaks with knowledge like this. Especially the soundtrack being recorded through a skull could have been mentioned to justify further more an interpretation of the game, because you the player doesn't hear the music as 'red' but as someone who is intercepting his brain.
Your 5 minutes analysis was going into the right direction but fell somewhat short. You can build a case through multiple examples to justify your interpretation about the themes.
And here lies also one of the problems, which led me to write this comment: There is a big chunk missing on how the story is set up from the beginning. Easter eggs like the door being shut at 21:40 or how when you crash with the submarine into one of the lockers, a little huddle comes out of it. With such information, one can start interpreting the story way more explicitly. There is this really cool cross-section of the entire map on the internet, which shows that yes the game gets always lower with each level, basically showing the viewer how deep this rabbit hole goes and with each level one dives into insanity with the later levels having a surreal experience (floating water).
There is also something really big missing in this story. You don't talk about the hidden station-links that was some kind of an ARG that had to do with the Morse code printer in the lap (Don't quote me on how this worked, I literally can't remember it too, but there was a video on this).
Then there are also little Easter eggs non canon, with the Limbo boy being a sprite somewhere (can't remember where in detail, but there is also a video about it).
I think you also could have talked about the attention to detail in the animations, like how you can fall on your back on the first secret orb or how the character runs slow if he is exhausted. My favorite is the one where you hang over this really big hatch in the "inception"-part, where if you just open it, the guards at the bottom will notice and will bring one of these gigantic robots that shoot these electric harpoons, if you wait long enough.
TLDR: Really like how you have the thing for words and editing in your video, but it fails on lacking information about the game and a too short of an analysis. I don't want to discourage you. I can see that this was a passion project and that you are happy with it as it should be for a content creator.
Edit:
Maybe I will find the videos. I will share the link with a later edit.
Found it, all my points in this video, except the door that closes at the timestamp: ua-cam.com/video/XfoNxS11RdM/v-deo.html

Interesting! Thanks for the constructive criticism! I agree for the most part that the video isn’t as in depth as it could be. But so much of this stuff is subjective, and even if it’s a shallow script it was my take on the game after playing it and that’s how it came out. Thank you for watching regardless!
