It's even crazier than that. As the spherical blast wave hits the ground, it propagates laterally across the ground. Makes sense, right? Well, there's still part of the blast wave moving down from above, and that meets the lateral blast wave. This point where the two waves meet combine strength, and this makes the resulting wave intensify and move at speeds above supersonic.

Using the term "hot as the sun" can be confusing because when someone says it, they usually mean the surface of the sun. Which is about 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit. But the core of the sun is about 25 million degrees. And the center of the explosion of the bomb can reach temperatures even higher than that. So when someone says "hot as the sun" they should really add the word surface or core to the phrase to make it clear which they mean

Second comment, specifically on the note of nuclear weapons and how they are used, the reason those treaties also have a expiration date is because times change, new technology and such so on and so on, in fact nuclear weapons are getting better in multiple ways, some are getting smaller and more focused to reduce civilian deaths (cruise missiles equipped with nuclear warheads) while others are doing the opposite. and be happy the soviet unions gone. they believed in tactical nukes as in treating nukes like any other weapon (in fact their plan if ww3 was to break out was to nuke Europe in half and invade.)

in answer to your question at 6:00 Luka, the reason man has created these weapons, is not only because they are the most destructive, violent and aggressive species in the universe, but also because they believe "bigger is better", but so do other countries, if the U.S come out with a big nuke, Russia will want to make a bigger one, when they make a bigger one, china will want a bigger on, then it'll be japan wanting a bigger one, then north Korea, then the U.S again, and you enter a vicious cycle where they will constantly try to make bigger and more powerful bombs until somebody creates one too big and accidently destroys the planet with the nuke ( when they detonate it, a "fire-wave", if you will, will loop the planet a few times over, then the people that survive (if any do) will have to live in an eradiated world until earth is no longer habitable and the planet just dies from it) leaving the earth a dead planet around the solar-system

    A few notes:
The reason why they stopped building fallout shelters is that the size and scale of nuclear bombs that would be used against a city would be so great that fallourt shelters wouldn't survive the initial blast. The simulation modeled one 800 kt nuke. The biggest nukes are measured in the megatons for point of conversion: 1 megaton = 1,000 kilotons.

Fallout shelters were never designed to survive a nuclear blast, they are designed to protect you from the fallout, hence the name. Nuclear blast shelters are a different animals entirely, generally concrete behemoths deep underground, most are owned by the US military and were built at the cost of tens of millions of dollars. Some people would construct artillery bunkers (designed to protect you from artillery bombardment) and use them as fallout shelters, which might provide some protection if you're on the outer edge of the blast, but there's no way they'd ever survive a direct hit.

There is a term used throughout the world known as M.A.D. Mutually Assured Destruction. It is the largest form of deterrence there is. If one country were to conduct nuclear strikes on another that has nuclear weapons, the target country would then retaliate with their own arsenal. While, of course, having nuclear weapons is dangerous, it is also beneficial from a safety (invasion/war) point of view. It makes those that do not have nuclear weapons more fearful to engage in a full-scale war with a nuclear power, as well as cease all current world powers to not have another World War. Also, while there were a few incidents in the last few years, a nuclear war was almost a thing back in the cold war era. The United States had launched an exercise called "Able Archer". The USSR believed this exercise to be an actual attack against them with nuclear weapons and ordered a submarine to begin launching nuclear weapons at the United States. He refused, preventing the destruction of society, and possibly the majority of the human race. There is no doubt in my mind that he was reprimanded on behalf of the Soviet Union, but he did the entire world a service when he refused to launch his missiles.
Note, some of the details may be incorrect, but if I recall right, they should go over the gist of everything I mentioned. If there are any corrections, that are needed, please feel free, comment section.
Love the videos, keep them coming.
You should react to the Titan II launch sequence. There's a museum in Arizona that used to be a nuclear silo and they still have a Titan II nuclear missile in it. It is deactivated and the nuclear warhead was removed. They just kept the tech alive for public education.

when this topic came up a few years ago, i asked my mother what she would do if something like this were to happen. her response? “oh we don’t have to worry about that. we’re in the kill zone so our faces would just melt off.” thanks, mom👍🏻

Nuclear weapons don’t directly make things safer, but they do directly make them more dangerous by existing.
The tangled web of nuclear deterrence adds layers of safety and danger to nuclear weaponry. That is, how people react to the existence of nuclear weapons, which depends on numerous variables including defensibility that the video address with respect to hypersonics.

I’m not saying I’m for or against guns, but it is the same principle. If I don’t have a weapon, a bad guy has a higher chance of breaking into my home. But if he knows I may have a gun, he may hesitate. Accidents can happen as a by product. I may think it’s an intruder and shoot, only to find out it’s a friend or family member. The gun may fall into the wrong hands and be used for evil. But, it does offer protection and naturally makes bad guys hesitate.
The same goes for Nukes. If you don’t have a nuke, another country may invade. With a nuke, they will hesitate. But mistakes can happen. Or, they can fall into the wrong hands and be used for evil.
There’s no good answer. If we removed all the nukes, we very well may go back to the many wars and invasions of the past. Same goes with guns. Here in Central Florida, we had many home invasions until a law nicknamed “the castle doctrine” came into play. Now, home invasions are few and far between and are usually by people that know you and know you’re not protected.

It's pretty simple to understand why we have nuclear weapons...
Enemy: Hey there friend that's a nice thing you got there, I'll take it now...
You: Naw I like this I think I'll keep it.
Enemy: Ok no problem I'll just beat your ass and take it.
You: Naw, you try anything and you and everything you have ever known will be vaporized off the face of the planet...
Enemy:..... Good point I'll go home now
