When a character's whole central theme is overcoming hardship, turning liabilities into advatages, and persevering despite being treated as worthless and incapable of success, and then--just before the character's determination, skill, and emotional support from a close-knit circle of unlikely friends (who each originally opposed the character until they worked together to overcome some past trauma) brings the character to point of finally achieving their ultimate goal that the whole fucking series has been leading up to--said character is revealed to actually have been the reincarnation of anime jesus and also was born as a direct descendent of the legendary hero who's bloodline bestows the power to always acchieve their dreams no matter what and also their mentor was secretly their father who is also the lord of hell itself and couldn't help directly so they manipulated every event behind the scenes in order to ensure that the character would become god-emperor of the universe. All of the struggle with none of the credit! And don't you dare complain, you boring, overpowered protagonist! None of your past suffering is valid anymore! 🎉

Someone else mentioned it but that honestly sounds like a good villain idea. A character who thought he did everything through hard work, realises that none of his achievements were his own. Just as they're about to achieve their goal it's revealed that he has an OP bloodline and his legendary father was manipulating everything to go his way. He's seen as fraud, his friends lose trust in him, he's banned from receiving his dream title and everyone turns their backs on him. Angered, he makes a plan to destroy all those who turned on him.
Honestly a great villain origin story and he could come into conflict with the protagonist who was able to achieve his dream with hard work.

A struggle he thought he now thinks he never had.
They also get assisted with one of the strongest teachers in the world. Then the teacher gets killed so he gets motivated to fight even more.

You know, I really find this funny because having your heroes be 'privileged' goes all the way back to ancient times. With heroes being related to gods and awesome heroes of the past. The sons and daughters of kings/Emperors. Having super special abilities and weapons, etc.
That in itself isn't what people bitch about, we love a awesome hero of great pedigree, but rather the hypocritical writing trying to make as if they weren't those special people and those natural advantages a good deal of the reason of their success.

Yes but problem is you also need to actually TRAIN with those powers or else they are useless. Look at Neji. If he didn't train his byakugan they would have been useless and it was a big moment when he revealed he was actually training with them.
Wasted potential is far more worse of a crime which happens so fucking much. Hell, you want to see special privilege with no work at all? Your average LN isekai protagonist. You then actually have to choose what the Hell I mean by this given interpretation is key.

Naruto has dogshit control and can't make a Rasengan? That's okay, lots of Chakra, clone time. Naruto still has dogshit control and has somehow never heard of elemental Chakra? That's okay he can learn it in three days because lots of Chakra. Every single power-up was "yeah I can't do it normally but lucky me all that matters is having infinite Chakra and I can master techniques that took everyone else decades in literally three days!" It simultaneously cheapens all his power-ups and gates him permanently miles past everyone else, because no matter how good anyone else is, they don't have infinite Chakra and therefore can't reach his level.

Anime in general seems to be fond of the secret prince sort of trope. Hardly anyone comes from a regular family getting good at the regular techniques until they come out on top it's always a super powerful family line and the most special powers that no one could compete with. It really does take away from the story when all the best and most powerful have to come from a Neverending dynasty that everyone just has to learn to bow to each generation.

- Garp mostly left Luffy to live with Dadan.
- Dragon didn't teach (not a pun) him anything.
- Ace and Sabo didn't have Devil Fruit ability back then and unable to teach him how to use stretching properly so Luffy had to do some trial and error.
Only Jinbei and Rayleigh taught him something, and when that happened, he earned it by rescuing Jinbei.

You may be interested in the webcomic UnOrdinary then. Basically, its set in a world where almost everyone has superpowers and the world is run on a Social Darwinist hierarchy. Those without powers are referred to as 'Cripples' and live on the bottom rung, unable to defend themselves from those with powers. The main protagonist, John, is one such character, and is seemingly a badass normal who refuses to let those with powers in his school push him around. He even manages to win the friendship of the strongest girl there, due to impressing her with his refusal to not let the hierarchy rule his life. However, and these are spoilers...
In truth, he isn't a cripple, but in fact has the power to copy the powers of other people and use them to even greater effect, up to 4 powers at a time even. In his previous school, he was originally assumed to be powerless, but was in fact a late bloomer, and when he finally discovered his power he trained and used it to get revenge on those who hurt him and his friends, but then took it too far and began beating down on anyone who looked at him funny, to the point that his friends had to try and get him to stop. He's put to traumatic rehabilitation after the fact (which basically amounts to mind raping him with visions of the pain he inflicted on others), leaving him a self loathing wreck in the present day who enrolled in his new school as a cripple as a means to punish himself and distance himself from his past.
Unfortunately, other people figure out the truth, and try to force John back into the hierarchy, unleashing a campaign of bullying and torments that separates him from his girlfriend (as she gets expelled briefly thanks to them), loses his means of contacting his loved ones, and physical abuse. As the situation leads up, John flips the script, dawns an alter ego identity and launches a campaign of destruction to get them off his back, initially wanting to level the playing field and keep people from hurting each other, but by the end, he's ended up falling back into being the monster, only this time worse. His friend manages to snap him out of it, and he's going through a redemption arc again, a better one.
Just thought I mentioned it, since it has a lot of similarities to your idea, the main character who's initially presented as the everyman is actually a super powered badass, only this time, the setting, his life, and the story show why he'd hide that, making it a point to show him being a self loathing, hypocritical, and damaged youth who struggles a lot with his anger and has to constantly fight to keep himself from becoming worse than what he hates.
The hecklers are basically me when I found out that Naruto was a child of prophecy the whole time. How do you go from Naruto vs Neji being about how you can change your destiny to making Naruto a chosen one? How did Kishimoto mess up that hard?

This…..Right here. This is by far one of the biggest pet peeves I have about anime. This framing that “it was all hard work“ and all it takes is one step back to look at the framing to see just how much they had going for that character.

Edit: Okay, Raguna was implied to be related to the prince but they don't go beyond that and nothing is done with it. The others end up in their respective towns via a mission or unfortunate circumstances. But they're still not chosen ones or anything.
every main character has been a earthmate except the third one maybe but he turns into a woolie so yeah they are all important the 4th game literally makes you the prince. maybe not messiah but more than a random person or victim of circumstance since they all went where they went on purpose but than lose their memories of said objective until ending or not at all.
The Atelier games are similar where you're only as powerful as you are from your craft needing a lot of hunting field work. ANd even then, unlike most RPGs, the stakes aren't high.
@@buccham6354 While the protagonists are Earthmates, the games do say that the only perks are communicating with nature and a few exclusive spells that you never really use outside of certain plot moments. They're never used to explain your ability to combat monsters. Also, they make you the prince/princess in 4 not because you're important, but because of a mishap and the actual prince decides to let it slide because he'd rather focus on his trade business than his responsibilities. In fact, Arthur does say your power as prince/princess only applies to Selphia.
The games make it abundantly clear that you're never the only Earthmate out there, so its not like you're a one in a million. The only RF protagonist you can call "important" is Raguna because he's secretly the prince, but nothing is done with that.
@@esteban8471 i would agree if kyle's whole goal wasn't to deal with fiersome and raguna wasn't loosely related to the king they are important earthmates and earthmates aren't that common they are known though. Technically speaking even frey/lest is important even without the prince thing since they are the earthmate that completed the rune spheres to save venti and the guardians.
@@buccham6354 Yeah, Earthmates are more so "special humans" than chosen ones, but unless you're one of *those* Earthmates, most of that special will only apply to farmwork. But we know from Ethelberd that there are a bunch of them given that he brags about slaughtering a lot. Some like Kyle and Lest/Frey show up because of a mission rather than destiny, and others like Aden and Sonja were just really unlucky with circumstances.

Yuno (Black Clover) - was praised as being a commoner/peasant orphan who somehow rivaled even the royals when it came to magic power. Turned out he was a royal from another country all along
Prince Yuno has a nice ring to it. He always had that air of royalty. More than all of those annoying stuck-up nobles in Black Clover. I didn't know he was royalty, and I haven't been able to get caught up since the end of the Demon King arc, but when I think about it, it's actually not surprising. I wanted to be in denial when I read that, but it's easy to accept even if I got kinda spoiled haha. I'll probably forget by the time I get to watching again anyway 🤣 And hopefully stay caught up so I don't get spoiled on anything else.
The Yuno point I don’t really think is much a point. While I don’t love black clover from what I saw up t’il it was revealed he was a prince he was already shown to be extremely privileged. But he still( from what I’ve seen) worked hard and still went through hardship. Same applies to Naruto for me. While he was “destined” to become that strong it doesn’t just get rid of the fact that he still went through extreme hardships and wasn’t aware of the reincarnation of Ashura.
