The Fall - Country on the Click (unreleased original version) 2003

- Here it is....Psychedelic as fuck
The album was recorded at Lisa Stansfield's Gracieland Studios in Rochdale between December 2002 and January 2003 with producer Grant Showbiz.
The subtitle is explained by the fact that the tracks were originally scheduled for release in April 2003 under the title Country on the Click.vPromotional copies were sent out and three of the new songs were previewed in the band's 23rd Peel Session, recorded on 19 February and broadcast on 13 March 2003. Smith was unhappy with the mix and decided it needed further work, stating in November 2003:
"The frustration is when people embellish what you're doing. I thought this LP was perfect round about March. But then you trust people-them who shall remain nameless-to go away and mix it and it comes back sounding like Dr. Who meets Posh Spice. You have to go back in and strip it down to what it basically was."
The early mix appeared on the internet, prompting the change of name when it was finally released, to differentiate it from the mix he was unhappy with...

I was baptized into Fall sound about 6 months ago and haven't listened to anybody else since. I don't think I will ever need to again. Thanks for this.
Robert Dearden nothing else matters when you find The Fall
Welcome to the fold! Lots of records to seek out and lose yourself in. I'm about 30 years into the journey and still haven't heard em all!
@@jamescumbie2187 Witness a nice, WELOMING veteran Fall fan without any NEGATIVITY! Thanks so much for your attitude--some (not ALL) older fans (especially those who've followed the group from the beginning) have a terrible, gate-keeper-ish attitude, whereby if you don't know the name of Craig Scanlon's second cousin's first dog they'll dub you "unworthy" to listen to this most inclusive of groups. And I promise you James there's no facetiousness intended in my comment at all. I've been into The Fall since the late nineties but I started properly collecting them and seeing them in 2004, even though I had about 10 of their early/Brix (first period) era LP's/CD's. I just collect vinyl now...I'd love for someone to put out a deluxe vinyl boxset of The Peel Sessions, that would be incredible. @Cause I know that for a lotta fans, the Peely versions ARE the "official" versions! Dragnet to Kurious Oranj is my favourite period of the "early(ish)" group but I think they made some of their best work in the 2000's, too. Real New Fall LP, Fall Heads Roll, Imperial Wax, Reformation, YFOC, Sub-Lingual Tablet, New Facts Emerge--they're the equal of their best stuff from the eighties imho.
I picked up all those Demon Records reissues that came out last month, and I got the RSD 2020 releases of [Austerbaejarbio] Reykjavik, 1983 and Cerebral Caustic; also got the Light User Syndrome 2020 reissue and really, really clean original copies of Extricate and Shift-Work so I've been getting into the 90's stuff recently...my "grails" are my signed (by M.E.S) copy of the Action Records UK pressing of The Real New Fall LP and my two Narnack (U.S) copies of Fall Heads Roll--one on plain black vinyl and one on white w/black splatter--fantastic LP and I never thought I'd be able to hook a copy of the white w/black splatter LP for the price I did, AND in NM/NM condition.
@Vivaan Khari It's a fucking bot, and why would you want to do that unless you really don't trust your girlfriend? Ffs
I know what you mean, as I just bought five of their CDs used - and have three early ones on vinyl - and I saw them at CBGBs in what was likely their first appearance in NYC. Great rockin band, older guy in front holding his elbows in a ratty sweater, practically talking...they were great! But at the time had no CD or LP player. Now I sure do! I've been listening to them a lot - but some other groups are well worth listening to, for sure. Heard the early Wire albums???
sat in my garden drinking homebrew listening this ,pissed as --- neigbours hate the fall lol
All neighbours are cunts. Don't worry about it.
Mostly it takes repeated listening if you’re gonna get the fall buzz-generally people want instant gratification, but anything that’s good is usually a slow burn. 25:26 25:27
Unused Fall song lyrics ???? (Lol)
FOREVERxx
favourite The Fall album since the moment i heard this years back.. always loved both the proper uk and usa released versions. but this is absolutely perfect. no other band has ever put out a record this fierce and exciting 26 years into their career. nothing compares.
the world is now so bleak without you mark..
Not only my favourite Fall LP but one of my favourites ever, by anyone. Gnarly, beautiful genius from start to finish.
Too bloody right.
That's my artwork: very proud.
Great cover. Looked like a Happy Mondays album. Just like E Smith to go psychedelic 12 years after Madchester.
That's what I loved about the Fall, never the expected
Where did I meet you Trovario??
So you should be, done any Artwork for any other Bands? ✌️
Nice ☝️ mate.
@@68majortom A few different bands, some for Too Pure Records, One for Fantastic Plastic (nice Scottish Indie) and lots for tiny Independents.
Thanks Gingoose.
This is why Fall fans invented the internet.
Thank you for releasing this. I am blown away right now. It is rare to see his incisive acerbic lyrics so clearly. Which is apparently why he did not like this previously unreleased mix. But damn what a great record. And I really wish this version would be made available for release. Mega box set please.
It was also leaked, hence he remixed/reworked it....
So glad this has started popping up. Brilliant stuff.
Now we just need the original Imperial Wax Solvent and the summer's made.
Glad to be able to hear this and Grant Showbizz seems like a top bloke, but there’s no way this is better than the officially released version. Everything MES said about it seems spot on, the effects and layering are just distracting and detract both from what is a great set of songs and a really powerful performance. It might not have always been true but Mark’s decisions saved this from just being a bit of a Fall oddity.
Smith said it 'sounded like Posh Spice'! I get what he means.
Yes. If this wasn't a Fall album, the production would've been fine.
The album wasn't just remixed, it was substantially re-recorded. This is evident in most of the vocals as well as the instruments. Mountain Energei may have nothing but the drums and a guitar left from the version heard here. I would love to own this version in proper CD quality (or better) but I think the finished release is one of The Fall's very best albums, a mid-life classic from The Best Group Ever. Hopefully the various rights issues can be resolved and we can get a handsome 3CD/3LP set of this era.
This mix is flawed (where are the drums?! as somebody asks below) but I'd have liked a better turned out version of this a lot more than the RNFLP. All the excised synth and guitar parts that make it sound like a cross between Posh Spice and Doctor Who also make it sound like the real new Fall album that came after The Unutterable in the parallel universe where MES didn't fuck up so often. But Smith hated The Unutterable too, so that's me told. And I wouldn't choose to live in a world that didn't have Are You Are Missing Winner? anyway. But that bit on the version of Contraflow here where it kicks back in and sounds exactly like Hawkwind is fucking magisterial.
Dear Caroline, I do agree completely. And by the way - I like this version of "Green Eyed Loco Man" much better.......meouw! purrrrrrrRRRRRRRRRRRRRRrrrrrrrrrrRRRRRRRRRRRrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrRRRRRrrrrrrrr
@@chrisdunlop6250 Oddly, the "Real" one sounds like a demo in spots...
@@CharlieMessing yeah, or like a monitor mix. I don't dislike it... it's a Fall album!... but I do think it's very overrated by both fans and journalists. I'm not wild on any of the three studio albums that iteration of the band made.
@@chrisdunlop6250 Ratings are overrated!
By the way, the problem with the mix for Mark seemed to be around his vocals being to high in the mix. Though for a fan of his words this would be no bad thing. The mix still sounds nice and 'sharp' and seperated to me, some low slung bass would not have been amiss.
The album artwork was based around the art movement Vorticism that I knew he liked (see the publication BLAST to spot the influence). He was fun to talk to on the phone: a mix of wariness, intelligence and sly humour. I made the cover into a very large 3D artwork which was bought by a good friend. So the work had a life afterwards.
"The frustration is when people embellish what you're doing. I thought this LP was perfect round about March. Wyndham Lewis ?
@@stevencowie7151 Yes. BLAST FIRST Records got their name from the publications as well.
Maybe, but based on his comment I guessed they slicked it up too much with post effects, removed some grunge, went too crazy w the delay, or maybe even worse. I mean, sometimes it sounds like somebody is scraping a cheese grater with a butter knife directly into the mike.
Everybody has a favourite Fall album.
It's usually the first one the listener hears.
Mark was right to make sure it wasn't going to be this one.
It's another man's version of The Fall, and that isn't possible.
There's only one Fall.
Well, Mark had told a bandmate "If it's me and your granny on bongos, it's still The Fall."
Always wanted to hear this ... been looking for it for years.
First-time listener to this, and it's immediately in like a bullet at #1= in my personal Fall Album Hit Parade. Psychedelic though? I'd say it has a jaunty-angle, foot-tappin' sense of rhythmischief, but then, I say that about all their stuff.
It’s fascinating to compare the two mix’s but Smith was correct to go back and redo it/remix it. Great album either way.
“The Past” is 3000x worse on Smith’s mix. Some of the other songs are better though
“So what do you think Mark?” Smiling, expectant Producer Face.....
Funny. To think of Mark responding, "It's swell!"
@@CharlieMessing Yeah swell? Or “Dr Who mixed with Posh Spice”….
"Y'fired!!!!"
The Past, what a tune!! A bit like a spiritual sequel to no Xmas for John quays for the 21st century
At first you don't know what the fuss is about, like what the fuck is he banging on about?
And then after a few goes - you're hooked.
trev moffatt He is LSD, amphetamine sulphate and Alcohol
For me it was instant. My ears just said "yes, more please!"
Floats more than the official one. Fun to listen to
HOW have I not heard this before?! I certainly agree with Mark on the needed rawness of the final product, but the version of Mountain Energei is phenomenal
and how can I not give a shoutout to that bonkers 303 on Sparta FC--love it!
I read so many stories of Mark terrorizing engineers and producers and wonder if the older albums could have been better without him meddling with the production, then I heard this and I think thank fuck he didnt let them release this version hah.
Suck balls arse this version has its place
i appreciate hearing this - i prefer the mixes of all the tracks that appeared on the "Real New" released version - i like these - but not as much
...then there's the US version which has the different versions of "Sparta" and, I believe, a couple of other tracks...it's a bit "busier" than the Action Records UK pressing (which is my favourite, and one of The Fall's best LP's full stop. I prefer the Narnack 2xLP version of Fall Heads Roll, though). Thanks so much for the upload I've been wanting to hear this, @Gingoose! Cheers!
This is a better version of a GREAT album.
thank you for posting.... yes agreed about remixing... m.e. smith's final decision as to how this should be heard is his and not up to someone with their paltry '15 minutes of fame' agenda, evident
Agree Chris, MES decided the final release, but this is a post for fans to listen to the progression to the final ‘product’. The Fall were always about that for me. Performing songs 18 months before they were released. The development of material was the joy. With this particular LP legend has it that it was pulled because it was ‘leaked’ so there is a possibility that he actually preferred the mixes (at the time). Who knows? I love it.
Thank you for uploading! Didn t knew, psychedelich ,post -punk,...all in one RIP Mark e Smith
Some of the tracks sound that different its almost like a new album - if only.
Love this album, particularly MES front and centre in the mix
whoa thank you for that! i can understand the dr.who x posh spice bit however i like this mix a lot. plus it led me to compare stuff where i found out the the original "groovin' with mr. bloe" served as an opening musical theme for argentine tv football boardcast :) guess you all know but in peel sess #23 it's covered shortly as an intro to 'green eyed loco-man'
You make much sense. Your post is entirely legible and coherent. Well done.
Part(s) of this reply were lies. Bloody mirrors....
So this is the mix Smitty didn't like?...........A lot of this sounds fkn great to me. (Admittedly there is a LOT of production on top of several of the songs)
i honestly prefer this over the final version. one of my favorite fallbums!
My favourite version
Last commands is one of the best songs ever....Cod Science.
stand by your bedsssssss
Weewee! Awesome band I haven't heard these guys in years
The version of 'The Past' on this is absolutely stonking!
Love it, feels a bit like a rework of No Xmas for John quays to me
Trippy AF! I can see why MES hated it but I think parts of it are brilliant, e.g., the trio of The Past-->Mike's Love Xexagon-->Recovery Kit are about as good as it gets. Reminds me a bit of the Telephone Thing days.
I prefer this version, especially Theme from Sparta FC. Much more melodic. The replacement: The Real New Fall LP is too stripped down. That internet leak, deprived everyone of this far superior version.
Right. A lot of people here seem to think it was just a difference of opinion over the mix. MES just re-recorded it to wrong-foot those who’d heard the leak.
agreed
Mountain Energei does indeed sound like Dr Who.
OUTSTANDING !!!
Filmed at Turf Moor the home of Burnley FC.
Never knew there was footage of this album being recorded
Song #10 is actually "Recovery Kit" and #11 is "Mike's Love Xexagon" (correctly listed in the video but incorrect in the above description). Either way, love it!!! Many thanks, Gingoose.
it just clicks from the start...
m. e. smith forever shining like an alien sun surrounded
by 'pissedmanctrampeze-an' rhetorical genius algorithms never to be replaced...
no contempt meant...
gosh! dont the contemporary 'music scene' look like a nuked council estate more n more every day it was no xmas for john quays then
now its no xmas without anything new from the fall
thanks for the upload
Rochdale ! The town hall is nice
A good, honest almost Smith-like comment. Excellent.
Green Eyed Loco Man here sounds like the best rave ever to happen in Coventry by time traveling racers from the mines
Everything The Fall did was an 'original version'.
Es el espíritu de la época. Desde una perspectiva siniestra.....
I find this version sooooo much better than the remixed record.
This is interesting though I far prefer the released version. The biggest problem is that the drums are a bit buried. This version of Contraflow is fantastic though.
Never known of anyone calling The Fall Psychedelic !
superb
Thank you!
Oh yeah---some more fuel on the 666th time I thought it had ran out!
this is why some people paint houses
even weirder was there were two separate different versions of MOUNTAIN on the unreleased versions
Eventually, some things are for free.
Most excellent.
Note to self;
don't open the box.☣
fucking superb
If I recall correctly, there was an earlier Fall LP in which MES also disliked the production and did it himself.
@@mickrathe that's it. This was mentioned in an article for either NME or Melody Maker.
The Fall - Country on the Click (unreleased original version) 2003 1536pm 13.7.23 the guy i just spoke to - was he hungry...? buy him some food.
Interesting to hear...it sounds fine...but when you hear the final product you can hear the tweaks which made it infinitely better compared to this...that was Mark...this is so weak compared to final recording...most would say its good enough...not Mark...
Hard to judge "final product" in MP4 version which plays on youtube....
I'd love to get a copy of this version on CD or Vinyl - is there a way to acquire it ?

There is now. Check out Cherry Red Records.
Protein: at least to me, is this the only track that sounds the same on the official album?
any chance that you could upload the tracks individually? but thank you for releasing this little gem

Will this get released now? Levitate is being rereleased May 11th.
hope so too!
That's a poor version of Sparta FC compared to released album version. Boxoctosis also sounds dulled down on this.
I thought it sounded rather good
I prefer this version of Sparta fc as its really sharp...
@@jahwobble5214 no where near as sharp as this version which is more tight and raw. ua-cam.com/video/gaxB5qRSq1I/v-deo.html
Country on the click version is sloppy and lazy.
I quite like the version of Protein protection on this...but Grant Showbiz cocked this up a bit. It'd be regarded as one of The Fall's worst LP's instead of one of their best, if this mix hadn't (thank God) been re-released
The Past, Recovery Kit, Mike's Love Hexagon sounds better in this mix
mountain energi 2
The version of Mike's Love Xexagon on this is far superior to the version on the remixed official album.
Agreed, I also prefer this version of The Past, it's not even close.
Susan vs youthclub sounds like LA when it starts
Some Link with separated tracks, please.

how to describe
Wow, the astonishing thing to me is that MES trusted someone to mix and release a record without him hearing the final. I mean, to be honest, no disrespect to the man, that's sorta bush league.
That is not what happened.
That’s what MES said. We’re you there or something?
That's not what happened at all lol. This was mixed, MES hated it and didn't let it be released, but it was somehow leaked to the internet. It was never released.
