    Thank You Gary.... My first thought was "gee Gary turn all 4!!! I will sit back, watching a ThePapa1947-A-Thon & make 4 big cups of Turkish coffee having the time of my life, HA"... Sorry about the rat stuff and loosing the open space, so goes life. I grew up in the last house on the street with a huge open country to explore as a child, wonderful!!! Now I live in the middle of an asphalt jungle, ugh! ... At 5:09 I saw a flower pot (I am sure you hated that) and you transformed that shape into a wonderful turning with beautiful grain. Until next time Gary................................................TM

      Thank you TM. Well we had 50 years of pretty much peace and quite. Just seems strange to hear voices behind us. Even stranger finding a rat in your generator. LOL. I did see that flower pot as well. Not sure when I will turn the other 3. I have one knarly piece on the lathe that just needs sanding. Now that we are back from our 3 day camping trip with 2 grandsons I will get it done.
      I know have 2 other projects that are not turning that I committed to doing so Monday I will go pick out some wood.
      Thanks for wacthing,
      Gary

      Well have had 50 good years here and there is one plus side. They built a swale because we do not have storm drains in our area. So we have been having ducks land in the swale and even come over to our pond. Also have had hawks sitting on the fence post watching the swale.

    Papa,
    Beautiful bowl 😋. Many thanks for a most enjoyable lunch hour. I always like to watch you turn a masterpiece whenever you post a new video. It is entertaining, informative and restful all at the same time.
    I don’t believe I can stop the developer from his wanton destruction, but I shall at least wish him the fleas of ten thousand camels to infest his person for the next seven years 🧐.

    You always do such a great job with that English Walnut, Gary and this is no exception. Fun turning to watch and such a great finish! Wow, you have really got that down to a science!
    Glad you got the generator problem solved. I know you guys love cats, you might consider getting a couple ferals to take care of your vehicles for you. LOL!
    I'm sure your time away in the MH with the grandsons was a very relaxing treat. Now it's time to get back to business! See you for your next great video, my friend!

      Thanks so much Phil. English Walnut is a wonderful helper to make something nice looking.
      That generator was really eating at me. Well the chewed wires that is.
      First discovered it in Vernonia Oregon a month ago at a family reunion. Switch did not work on the inside do I went and opened the door and found the nest. While cleaning it out a rat jumped on my chest. That ticked me off more than the chewed wires.
      But I got it fixed and that was nice.
      Had a great time at Silver Falls State park. Lots of hiking and bike riding. We got wore out but the grandsons just kept on going.
      Got home last night.
      Got right back at it this morning and have the first coat of finish on a piece I have been threating to do for ages now.
      Thanks for watching my friend.
      Take care,
      Gary

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  2 роки тому +1

      Oh I forgot to mention. We have had a few feral cats now and then. We leave food for them if they seem to stick around.,
      Our in door out door cat Scooter was the best mouser ever. He would go into the field behind us(now new homes) and bring us presents. Also would go to the other neighbors fir trees and bring back critters as well. But after loosing him to a coyote 5 years ago I built a catio for the two that were kittens at the time.
      So I will sit in a rocking chair with a pellet gun and just wait LOL. I think they will go away now that they are done digging up the field behind us that is now covered with houses.

      They are done moving dirt and building so maybe the rats have all moved out of there. I made it known to the rats I did not want them here.
      Funny thing when I discovered the nest in the motor home it was on a camping trip and the generator would not turn over.
      Found the nest and was cleaning it out when a rat jumped on my chest about 6 inches from my face. I was laying on the ground to I could see inside to pull the nest out. NOT FUN! LOL

      For almost 50 year we had inside/outside cats. Then the coyote population got bad and we lost a wonderful cat to probably more than one coyote. It was not a pretty site. He would always bring us home a mouse from the neighbors woods. But the coyotes would hide out there as well.

      Thank you Robert. So before I found the generator issue I did find a nest on the battery for the engine in the motor home. Thought it was ok even though I scared one off when I opened the hood. Had to take it to DEQ (clean air here in Oregon) and found it had a miss.
      Well check enginge light came on and off as I drove. I flunked and checked it with a OBD 2 reader and found the #7 injector not working. Pulled inside engine cover and there was a nest on the motor over #7 and they had chewed a wire. Found it and my son dropped by and fixed it up.
      Then came the generator on a camping trip and I had to fix all of that.
      Yes I have heard of the soy based coatings.

    Very nice Gary! I love any spalted wood. The colours and patterns are beautiful, like those on your bowl. I haven’t tried a water based sanding sealer yet, but it’s on my list of things to try. I imagine it doesn’t dry as fast as alcohol based sealer, so you get a little more time with it? Good job on the generator too! It’s been quite a few years since I’ve had that problem.
    Cheers, Rick

    • @ThePapa1947

      Thanks so much Rick. Actually the water based sanding sealer dries very fast and I feel you can sand as soon as it feels dry. Unlike other finishes that might gum up even if they feel dry to the touch.

    Once again, as always, another beautiful piece turns out! Gary, if you have some, in a future video you should provide some images (before and now) of the area being turned into more of the concrete jungle (that way we can share in your stress and maybe help with that). It is sad how development now is nothing more than concrete and asphalt covering everything... and/or weeds left to cover what used to be maintained properties!

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  2 роки тому +1

      Thank you Grant. It did end up a very pretty piece of wood.
      I have lots of pictures and somewhere we may have a picture of the horse that used to lean over the fence while we talked to it.
      It was a real nice place with the old farm house and over the years really got fixed up. Had nice pool and a pool house. The left the farm house but leveled everything else including the pool.
      Cut down over 80 trees. We took walks through it almost daily as they made huge changes. Also took a lot of pictures.
      I took a video of the huge Cedar tree they took down on the property line. Some of the roots came onto our place. We still have our huge Cedar tree that stood next to it.
      Progress I guess, at least we had almost 50 years of nothing behind us except the farm house which is back a ways.
      If you look back in my videos you will see my Million Dollar fence post turning. That is when it started and I saved a piece of the old horse fence and made a small vase out of it.
      Called Million dollar because that is what the houses sold for and more.
      Thanks for watching and the pain is pretty much gone and we are going to enjoy what we have.

    When you get wood similar to what was on the bottom of bowl, try putting some baking soda In layers in the tear out/ punky wood or hole then apply thin CA glue on each layer. This makes a very strong filler and sands ok. But don’t use in areas where appearance is critical since it won’t take a finish like stains. Suggest experimenting on wood to see how it works for you before putting on a turning.

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  2 роки тому

      Thank you John. I will have to give that a try. I have seen where baking soda and CA has been used to build up and area on non turning things but this sounds as though it might work great. Thanks for the Tip!

      @williamfawkes8379 2 роки тому

      Yes, experiment a bit with it, it's different than how it normally behaves. It's a more energetic reaction, and a very solid result. I've been meaning to test out some combinations with mixing pigment into it before adding the CA, to see if it will be more attractive.

Had to pull the PC board and follow the wires back. Then I could celebrate.

    Thanks for another great video. The bowl and finish are fantastic. Sorry about the rat problem. I’ve had a problem with squirrels chewing wires and vacuum lines on a truck that’s always outside. Tried different repellents, nothing helped. I read somewhere about using essential oil in a peppermint scent, and that seems to work. I soak cotton balls and put them in empty pill bottles with holes drilled around them and place in various places on the truck.

      Yes the oils and peppermint are supposed to work. We got home from a small trip yesterday and I will put the motorhome back under the pole building. Maybe get some oils. Also they say leave the hood open because they do not like the light for a nest. So I could open the generator as well. Have you tired any of those sound units that have flashing lights? Some you hook to your battery and they shut off while driving. I might go with the plug in ones for the motor home. But they are done building and moving dirt so maybe the rats will move on.

I just finished re turning a spalted Birch bowl I was never happy with. It was my biggest, yet. How bad was it? Enough for a 3mm tenon, redoing the walls and wavy bottom. I had a similar problem with rodents, but mine were mice and they chewed up the rubber tubing for my windshield washers. Their little snack cost me $100 to repair as it was under the bezel and very hard for my mechanic to reach.

      Yes it could have been close for sure. I do like stopping and checking things out.
      Yeah I sat the turntable up there and did not mean to leave it. Not good if you are turning something out of round and have it vibrate off.
      Those critters seem to like to chew on things. I need to get some of those electronic gizmos to scare them away. Motorhomes sit way to long and gives them a chance to move in. I figure it would have cost $500 or more to fix mine because they probably would have taken it out of the motor home to find the lost wire. I finally lifted the control board and found the wire going to the one that was chewed. I could see it moving in one of the looms I checked but they had chewed it on the other side of the wall where I could not see it. So that fixed it up just fine and used it yesterday morning which was the last day of our camping trip.
      Thanks for watching,

    Beautiful bowl. I can't wait for you to turn that other hunk of walnut. By the way, Phil hasn't uploaded in a while. Do you know anything about that?

      Thank you James. Phil is wanting to get his strength back before doing anything real serious.
      Thank you for watching and your concerns with Phil.

      This was a little because it was spalted. Other wise it has been the same as the heart wood.
