I'm probably wrong, and I apologize if I am, yet I find myself wondering if SCOTUS is simply using this case to answer all of these questions here and now. Absurd and otherwise, to prevent future SCOTUS from having to adjudicate with potentially less clearly defined violations. Since the court uses the text, history, and tradition of the laws to try to remain consistent then it behooves the office to rule out and decide these matters as much as they can, so this isn't brought to them 50 more times with simple variations of the claims. Hammer them out now and he will be facing the trial clear and clean.
