Hey Jay! I think you were born a few decades too late. But, at least you appreciate these works of art where most young people could care less about the history of these beauties.
I know I was born way too late.. my goal is to keep the information out there for the younger generations. I really want to buy a mid 30s car plastic wrap the seats and share it with everyone. I honestly believe that the cars from the 30s are dying off because a lot of people never shared them. I sometimes get grumpy comments from grumpy guy saying that all you shouldn’t have touched the car is in all this stuff even though I had permission to do so. And that’s why the car hobby as a whole is dying because it wasn’t shared. That might be a video for discussion one day. =)

Jay, that Hudson museum with all those rare and pristine examples of Hudson's through the ages would definitely be my version of heaven on earth. The Hudson story is even more amazing when you delve into the talented team that created these groundbreaking iconic artworks.
It’s definitely worth going to that place is awesome there’s a lot of cars that I did not feature I would love to go back he has some really cool projects in the works =)
I got to ride in one of these a few times . It was in Astoria, OR at the Cannery hotel, and this was there shuttle for dinner. It was a local man that kept it up and did it just for fun, and apparently there were several different cars available, but this was what we got to enjoy. The interior was amazing, so rich and over the top compared to more modern materials. The engine was so smooth you would swear that it wasn't even there, despite being enormous.
What a treat to get to ride in this really cool car =)

My Dad would often recall. Here in the UK some of these cars were sold, rather niche. During and after war the fuel shortages and lack of 2nd owner demand made them bargains, bought by farmers stripped down used on the farm, their big engines and strong frames were useful workhorses. Dad as a lad would help on neighbouring farm and drive them in the fields especially at harvest time

Thank you I absolutely love this car to the point that I started looking to see just how much they go for they are too much money I mean they’re not crazy expensive but you could get a Chrysler airflow or a Packard 120 for cheaper..

0:25 I like how you show the Saab 96 when you're saying "exotic" in the intro. It wasn't exactly sexy, but it was pretty exotic!! The styling on this '35 Deluxe looks very cutting edge with the grille slanted back.
Yeah haha all the foreign cars are exotic to me because they didn’t come from here.. =) that 35 was really something I wish I could have got inside.
It's interesting watching the progression of ashtrays and cigar/cigarette lighters over time. The early cars had small ashtrays and no lighter most of the time to 50's cars where they were very nicely styled to the 60's and 70's when main ashtrays got so large they could hold several packs worth of butts, had auxiliary ashtrays for every passenger and multiple lighters in luxury cars, to the present day when they are about extinct in every car. I wonder if they'll come back someday? You can just about sense the rise and fall of smokers.

You made it tough Jay! Much as I like the cool Hudson, I think the first one I would have to take the Stude. Number two is easy! I LOVE that DeSoto Airflow! They were better looking than the Chrysler ones!
I have a big thing for De Soto/Chrysler airflow is right now the car that looks like a toaster but there’s so cool and there’s so much space inside of them. With overdrive and three wheeling in the aerodynamics they got pretty good gas mileage from what I’ve read

8:44 Both front and rear doors are "rear hinged." I'm not sure I ever saw that before.

PS: I _LOVE_ the "suicide doors" on the early '60s Lincolns ... some of my favorite cars.
Yeah me too I wasn’t sure if these are considered suicide doors they are rear hinged, they did some weird door configurations during this time period

You did find a Studebaker Dictator. The name was dropped somewhere before or after the beginning of WWII when Studebaker thought it was in bad taste.

Not really when you consider that before the war, Mr. H--ler was known as a dictator, but his rebuilding of Germany into a finacial powerhouse was a great achievement of the times and he was also on the cover of Time magazine. Originally naming the car "dictator" was considered a new and exciting thing since the world's only dictator at that time was so successful. (Ok, Musinini was one too...but whatever).
5:11 I kind of like the "fender in motion" rear fender style (on the '35). Very distinctive.

Go see the 1936 Teraplane that Bad Chad is currently working on. He put on rear fender skirts, side mounts and he chopped it mildly. It is a sedan, but the back of the roof now has a slope. I think it looks more streamlined. He is not making a hot Rod. Check it out.

WWR #2: either of the Airflows would be interesting. I saw vids of Airflows rolling down canyon hills, and the car looked _perfect_ after.
I know that was before "crumple zones" and such, but still, I wonder how "safe" for the passengers such a sturdy car would be.
I have a real big thing for a Chrysler airflow right now if I had the money to buy either a 1937 Packard 120 four-door sedan or a 1937 Chrysler airflow I honestly don’t know what car I would buy. The Packard is so nice and quaint but the Chrysler airflow is something it’s a bit of an ugly duckling but it’s something that’s totally different. It’s like the American Tatra.. I really wanna cover the car this year I wanna find one around here if there is one around here they only made 20,000 of them in 4 years. They also made De Soto airflows they were powered by six cylinder engine for Chrysler‘s were powered by an eight cylinder engine.
I always thought the Terraplane was Hudson's "Race Car" as it were. Sort of like their muscle car.
Entry level car took the place of Essex somewhere around 1935
I HAD A 1928 HUDSON 4 DOOR POLICE CAR FROM CHICAGO, BUT I HAD TO SELL IT. WAS IN A BARN IN IOWA FOR 50 YEARS!. HAD NO MONEY TO RESTORE IT!!! HAD A CHROME SIREN ON THE FRONT!!!

For the first scenario I would prefer the '35 Hudson Deluxe 8. But for the second scenario I would go with the '36 DeSoto Airflow. I always appreciated those cars, even if they weren't popular in their day.
I like the grille on the '35 Hudson but what caught my eye the most were the chrome headlights and taillights. I just like the look!

Are you sure the Terraplane didn't have a hump trunk option in 1935? Perhaps the '36? My grandfather had a '35 or '36. They referred to it as the Terraplane and it had a hump trunk on the back. Also had the electric hand shift. He had it until about 1950.
Every single model that I saw in terreplein didn’t have a hub trunk but I didn’t look at every single model I put a terraplaine that is a 35 terraplaine to show that the trunk is inside and doesn’t have a hump trunk

Wow Jay, those doors open wide. I am just wondering how close were the cars in parking lots in the old days. It looks as though you would have to be careful getting in and out without hitting another car.
That’s very true I was thinking something along those lines the other day the cars keep getting bigger and bigger but the parking space either stayed the same size or possibly shrunk when I drive my truck better analogy when I had a 67 mustang and I drove it the parking space seemed huge because the cars were smaller I don’t know if it would be the same for this car but it didn’t seem all that wide just a bit on the long side =) It would be interesting for sure

Unfortunately I did not do that one this was the last car from the museum I shot six cars at the museum and all of them are now featured there are some really cool stuff coming now I got to shoot a stutz yesterday

I just put a list of first together of automotive firsts conflicting information that is out there is absolutely incredible.. Google would have you believe that the first enclosed car was made by Hudson in 1913 but that’s not true.. also they say the 1965 Corvette is the first one with this breaks and that’s not true either.. that episode should be posted within an hour hopefully it’s a good one
I would rather a 1935 Hudson Deluxe 8 or a 1935 Nash advanced six. My dad's first car was a 1936 Hudson Terraplane. I think he said he paid $100 in 1949 for it used.

@@What.its.like. He traded it in on a used 1953 Mercury Monterey coupe two tone blue in around 1955-56. The Ford dealer gave him the $100 he paid for the Terraplane on trade in value & I believe he paid $1400 for the Mercury which was 5-6 months wages in 1955 when $1.25 per hour was the average wage. He traded the 53 Mercury in on his first brand new vehicle ever, a 1962 Ford Galaxie 500 hardtop. Man what a ride that thing was! The back seat of which I was most familiar, was the size of our trailer's living room!

My dad always said you can tell a pre-'35 car from a post-'35 car because there were no solid roofs before then.
He speculated it was because the technology to make the complicated bends didn't yet exist. I wonder if that accurate?
I’m not sure why the solid steel roof wasn’t a thing I always thought that Henry Ford was the first one to offer a full metal cab.. but came to find out Hudson was the first..

WWR #1: Oddly, the 1935 Dictator is interesting !
Love these early Streamline Moderne Hudsons - the 36-37 grille however is just awful. I think this model is very elegant, and compared well with the competition (Hudson's Deluxe Eight just about prices with the Olds Eight for 35) Over in England Railton would build you a sports car - or sporty car anyway - using the Hudson 8 as its base.
Everyone wanted IFS in the mid-30's. GM cracked the problem with knee action (Dubonnet) on Chevy and Pontiac and a more conventional SLA setup on Olds, Buick & Cadillac. The independents tried and often abandoned their own versions (like the Baker axle-flex). Ford ignored the whole thing and kept a solid axle until the all new 1949 models.
Everyone also wanted self shifting - or at least a column shift to get the gear level off the floor (remember 3 across front seating?). Reo spent a fortune it couldn't afford developing the Self Shifter - most of the others tried to find some work around until, once again, GM brought out the hydramatic.

Good one. You missed a feature that I love on the car. ROLL AWAY WING WINDOWS. One way opens the vent wing. Then full down goes the window and wing. This one didn’t have the option apparently. Good video parts are rare…

Awesome choices I have a huge thing for the Chrysler airflow right now I don’t know if I like the Chrysler airflow better if I like the De Soto air flow better I like to De Soto because it’s got a flat head six and probably gets better gas mileage but I really love the styling of 1937 Chrysler airflow. That car doesn’t get the praise that it deserves and they are very rare they didn’t make that many of them they only made like 20,000 of them in four years

The owner was telling me that he found it in a barn it was a barn find car he fully restored it he was telling me a story as I was walking around the car of how much dust came off of it.. it’s an absolute pity that there isn’t that many of these left I don’t know how many survived I couldn’t find any production numbers either but this is the first one that I’ve ever seen in person so I can only imagine that they’re not very plentiful
I wonder if you can take anyone of those Hudsons out for a spin? 😅

Haha yeah I’ve met with people from the channel, I’m a regular guy and if people want to go to a car show and hang out I’m down for that. One day I’d like to host my own event totally free and have vendors come in for free. Perhaps one day it will be the show to go to, want to prove it’s possible to put on a car show for free and it be fun =)

When did the automotive industry go from making good cars to making pieces of junk? Seriously, Honda and Toyota are the only long-term reliability cars made today. It's ridiculous.
Yeah I’d say the 80s During the malaise era.. Chrysler k car.. many have been the first throw away car that’s another one I’m going to add the list first throwaway car and automotive firsts =)
