Why folding Mirrors? A Doubletake on it.

  • In this video I talk about the value of installing folding mirrors on your adventure and then walk through the installation of DoubleTake folding mirrors on my KTM 390 Adventure. A small investment into folding mirrors can save hundreds of dollars in replacement parts and prevent you from losing your clutch or front brake functionality if things go terribly wrong on the trail.

    Chippy the chipmunk at the end of the video is the star of the video.
    You can buy only the perch "c" clamp piece. I broke both of them on a Honda Transalp. Did not have to buy a master cylinder or clutch lever mount. I easily made new mounts in a few minutes at home until the new perch mounts arrived.
    They are expensive and many users say they vibrate and do NOT like them. Even on a BMW GS 1250.
    In some locations they are often and easily stolen due to the big wing nut.

      Yeah, I only installed these mirrors on this bike. I haven't installed them on any of my other bikes. They are OK, but after 10s of thousands of miles with these I haven't found them to be a huge upgrade.

    When I was about 13, I went camping with a friend, and his family. One morning we were eating breakfast at a table that was right next to a tree. One of those chipmunks came streaking down the trunk, Stole a full size powdered doughnut out of the box, and went streaking right back up the trunk. As fast as it went up the tree, you wouldn't even have thought the doughnut had any weight. If you hadn't seen the theft, you would only have noticed a white powdered doughnut flying up the trunk.
    Another fun thing to do is tie a peanut on to a fishing line, and then play tug of war with squirrels, and chipmunks. It works with blue jays also.

      Not good to do the fishing line, as they are busy trying to store food for the winter, let them get there work done. Sounds like you like to bully little animals. LOL

      @@hiltonmcconnell2563 Hilton, you are soon sensitive. How cute. I am not suggesting that you settle down for the long haul, taking them away from their work for hours at a time. I am talking about 10 minutes. That will not make the slightest dent in their winter hoard. LOL

    I see a lot of people buy these mirrors. I had really wanted because I thought they were necessary (they aren’t). I had planned to put them on both my VStrom and WR250R. After buying a bunch of other things I decided to buy them when I broke the mirrors that came on the bikes. Both bikes mirrors work great as is. 3+ years going and I still have my original mirrors. I’m glad I didn’t waste the 4 x $65 money to buy the double take mirrors.
    Also, I’d seen these advertised often as indestructible….then ItchyBoots broke one…indestructible??? Not!

    • @advmatt
      @advmatt  Рік тому +1

      Agree, these can be broken, but having a mirror that can bend out of the way or can keep the clutch or brake perch from breaking is worth it to me. It depends on how mirrors are mounted on your bike.

    Seems a good solution to my windscreen upgrade.
    I've installed the 790Adv windscreen on my 390Adv.
    Factory mirrors collide with the new windscreen.
    Doubletake mirrors could fix this issue.

    Where did you buy those folding mirrors and what brand are they?

    If you were to fold the mirrors inward, as I have seen some people do while riding off-road; do they pose any danger to the KTM display if you were to take a fall?

    • @advmatt
      @advmatt  3 роки тому

      I just looked at it, and I suppose its possible the mirrors could make contact with the display, but it doesnt look very likely. The mirrors tuck into the bars and it would be hard for them to reach the display unless you get knocked directly into it as well.

    Can we not fit without adapters?

    • @advmatt
      @advmatt  3 роки тому

      You can't right side without the adapter because the right side mirror is a left hand thread. The adapter converts the left hand threat to right hand thread for the ball mount. I think the left side can be mounted without the adapter but the mirror heights will be different.

  • @dipakrautela4273
    @dipakrautela4273 3 роки тому

    Hey Matt. Those Mirror Adapters are M10 both ends right? One side is RL thread and the other side is LR is that correct?

    • @advmatt
      @advmatt  3 роки тому

      I don't know what the thread size was on the adapters. The mirror kit I purchased from Double Take came with all the necessary hardware so I did not have to figure out adapter sizes. You are correct, one adapter is right hand thread and the other is left had thread. The left hand thread converts over to a right hand thread for the ball mount.

    • @advmatt
      @advmatt  3 роки тому

      I just rewatched the video. Without using the adapter the mirrors wont be at the same height. The adapters set the mirrors at the same height. The adapters are the same length. I did not see a reference to the adapters being a different height, only different thread directions.
