  • In this episode, I showcase the wind-blown Chinese Elm tree that Candace sent home with me a few weeks back to take over. I'm very excited about this tree. After a quick showing, I tackle a couple of Willow Leaf Ficus trees. They are pushing out of the pot and I don't think anyone will gravitate to them now, so I'll work on them for a year or so and then see who might want to swap them up.

I had to run and make myself a hot cup of tea to watch this great work on these trees by Bonsai Master Dave. Always great work by Dave. A true master.

    hi Dave,
I think the winds swept elm has a correct front. Consider following the trunk line. One side shows the trunk perfectly the other side hides the trunk. The front was determined previously and correctly I think. Chinese elm is not that apically dominant but all new foliage is going to grow up or perpendicular to the design. Its going to be a labor intensive tree unless you grow it on the side and put it flat for show. It is a really well designed wind swept tree. That style is much harder to do well than most people think. Nice root work. Thank you.

I like the back with the wound as the front. Maybe rescore the wound to get it healing over again.

With this crazy weather, my Daffodil bulbs in one area are poking through. My mums, 3 still green and flowers here in the Chicago area.

Good morning Dave. Candice’s wind blown Chinese Elm in that stone pot is amazing. You are very fortunate to be its caretaker. Great work on those Willow Leaf roots. They should recover well in the plant room. The fans are working and life is grand. Cheers my friend.

James and I left the big bulbous roots on his willow leaf ficus originally, but finally went "full Nigel" on them this summer.. doing great now.

Tony of Tony's Bonsai mentioned that drone video of yours at the cabin several times, and how much it influenced him, and at the time, I didn't know he was a photographer, but those pictures you have of his are stunning.

I think the front of Candice's elm is the side with the wound, just need to heal the wound. Recut it if it's stalled.

ive cut the whole root bases off big ficus before. even big trunks will re root no prob like hibiscus does.. use humidity dome and seedling heat mat. works great. chop away dave no worries.. ive started to prop every thing and plant in the ground to get more trees too. its the way to go. grow your own. merry christmas!

My willow leaf ficus never misses a beat after severe root pruning. But my ficus triangularis self defoliated and hasn't recovered after 3 weeks..

Personally, I'd consider removing the lower branch on the elm altogether...its just too close to the ground...
