With Skyward Sword, I only meant options to use the analogue stick for small things like flying and swimming, I get that the sword combat was designed around motion controls. I haven't actually played Zero, but it seems like an option for analogue flight would've worked just fine, and the controls were a complaint from many people long before the game came out.
Well with Star Fox Zero it's weird. See, forced motion controls were the entire POINT of the game and it wouldn't exist without them. Seriously. The reason the game was made was because Nintendo promised in a shareholders meeting to make a single player game that could ONLY be played with the Wii U's wacky controller. They put Shiggy on the task and he said "Hmmm...I bet I could do a Star Fox like that!". The game is actually designed in such a way that it would be unplayable without motion controls as there are multiple instances where you need to go in one direction and shoot in another. Having said that, I completely agree on the Options menu. The sound balance in Star Fox Zero is infuriating and I'd like to adjust the gyro control sensitivity on the X axis.
"Ok good. Now smell her a little." i full on belly laughed to the fifth dimension on that part alone. Not to mention the opening. Terran Gell... Never change!
I gotta agree, he's the only one who I still watch even though I disagree with him on some things because at least he articulates his opinion with actual arguments instead of "oh I just didn't like it so it's bad". Most of the time anyways.
Yeah, never came across a video of his where even if I disagree he didn't supply me with sufficient & reasonable arguments as to why he feels the way he does about X, Y or Z. I give a lot of credit to anyone who simply speaks from his heart & just straight up gives you his opinion, admitting that "this is just how I feel about the game/movie/record/event/whatever". But Razör goes a step further & always makes sure you understand why & how is opinion has been shaped, to the point where I have even revisited games & movies to see if "he's right".
Star Fox Zero is a strange beast. Its flaws are big enough that its hard to recommend. But at the same time its merits are enough that I do not regret my purchase of it at all. Also the All Range missions are by far the best in the entire series.
The problem I'm noticing with StarFox Zero is mostly due to Miyamoto's involvement. You can clearly tell that the things PlatinumGames wanted to do for the game had great promise, but you really notice the struggle with the development cycle since two different gameplay styles collided and do not work well together. Miyamoto is becoming the George Lucas of the gaming industry at this point.
You're missing my point entirely. I'm not denying the mans talents. What I'm saying is he's forcing gimmicks into things that shouldn't belong. You can tell that Miyamoto and Platinum have different ideas for gameplay, and they don't mesh well at all.
"... the marksmanship of Dick Cheney in a moon bounce..." Your analogical prowess is beyond sublime and my sides have ascended to Valhalla after falling in a fit of frenzied laughter.
i really love the gyro controls i was in an all range mode section going for a new high score when one ship flew past me down and to the right on my tv screen. in a purely reflexive action and in like half a second my eyes darted down to the gamepad jerked the cockpit view all the way down and to the right and got him right before he was about to be out of view i haven't had a moment like that in a video game feel so good in a very long time
I can't stop liking your videos, dude! You're hi-octane vitriol and blistering wordplay makes Yahtzee look like the donkey from Winnie the Pooh. Keep up the good work, looking forward to watching the rest of your set!
Well, the controls are Miyamoto's fault. If it's not Mario, or Zelda, or Animal Crossing, Miyamoto absolutely does not give a fuck about NIntendo's franchises unless they have some new gameplay crap shoehorned in it. The reason why there isn't a new F-Zero is because he doesn't know what "NEW" can be done with it. The reason there isn't a new proper Metroid game is because he doesn't know what "NEW" can be done with it. Which coming from the company and man that pumps out rehashes like a company that's trying to regain any lost money, doesn't mean a lot. Chances are, if people are going back to your product asking for more, you shouldn't try to fix something that isn't broken when your fans never asked for it. I mean, look what happened at the Sonic franchise. Yeah. Let's just ditch all the advancements that Sonic 3 & Knuckles made only to add in stuff like fishing, shooting, and treasure hunting. Because CLEARLY that was what the Sonic fans wanted from a sequel. Sega finally started to get things back on track with Sonic Generations, only to throw everything in the trash AGAIN with Sonic: Lost World. Does Sonic Mania, and Project Sonic mean they've learned from their recent mistakes? I don't know. Can we be guaranteed the franchise won't go back to throwing the advancements in the trash after those games? Star Fox is at this point where the franchise would benefit without Miyamoto at the helm. If Platinum Games were left alone to make a Star Fox game, it would have been better. Instead we got this mess of a game that's trying to be like the old games, but isn't at the same time because there's too many cooks in the kitchen.
I also hate what a purist he is which is why Star Fox Zero rehashes so much of 64 and Paper Mario is only allowed to use standard Mario characters (and 100+ generic Toads).
Awesome anecdote of the arcades, I played Space Lords at a Golf Land arcade in Castro Valley, CA back in the more innocent mid 90s where I actually watched Gooosebumps and Big Bad Beetle Borgs LOL. One of the great PC games I was introduced to then was Star Control II:The Ur-Quan Masters, and playing Space Lords reminded me of that title's vs mode, I only wish you could play the ships form StarCon in that too (but some of the aliens in the arcade did remind me in style of the former). My dream arcade would have that cabinet (since emulation-if they even got it working on MAME- wouldn't do the original experience justice) have placed next to Midway's Strike Force, and Atari's Escape from the Planet of the Robot Monsters LOL!
Man, imagine showing a cop your ID, only to have it say your name is Wolfram Von Fist. I imagine he would apologize for pulling you over and just let you leave.
***** i agree they milked SF64 too much.. assault was the next natural evolution of SF formula although command was pretty good minus the stupid story. but the combat and boss fight of zero is really incredible.and kinda innovative.
Nintendo Japan is a company run by fucking morons, they never listen to fans, create shitty ideas which are worse (if it ain't broken why fix it). They are only surviving because of the hand-held systems.
I agree as does many that play. Overall, I had fun playing it once I got the controls down. Luckily the two parts that use that sluggish drone can be done with the arwing after the first time. One big bonus I had with the game was with the two player mode. I was able to introduce my 3 year old nephew video games (not on a phone). I would fly, he would shoot, and the only instruction on what to shoot I gave him was to shoot the glowy things.
Target mode always screws me up because usually when I have to use it, I'm being shot at with a powerful beam weapon from behind, so my brain tells me to dodge in one direction, but the horizontal controls are effectively reversed when I look up at the TV because I'm flying towards the camera, unlike in every other Star Fox game ever (and likely every other 3D flight-based game ever) where no matter where you are in relation to your enemy the camera is behind you. You, after all, are the one flying your ship, not the enemy.
Hopefully they can get a team that can actually do something new with Star Fox. Star Fox 2 is still mostly alien to the general public, but if you played Star Fox Command you probably already have knowledge of most of what Star Fox 2 was without some of the extra vehicle types. At least in that game your allies arguably are worthwhile because you direly control them to intercept enemies in a mix of RTS and arena shooting.
Even though I enjoyed Star Fox Zero this review felt fair. I never had a problem with the Gyro Copter. In fact I actually loved it mostly because it felt different. To be honest my only problem were the controls. Were they broken? No. I just wish it gave me the option to change them. Would I recommend to buy it full price? Well no not really. There are better budget games on the Wii U(Like Pikmin 3 and Donkey kong Tropical Freeze) If it had a price drop then yeah. Personally I feel that Star Fox Guard was better. If they make a sequel and I hope they do it be better if Nintendo decided to developed it themselves and not go through a 3rd party company like Platinum studios not that I hate them or anything. Star Foz Zero was alright and I'm happy to have played it. It did things that are awesome and things that are not so awesome. It is nowhere near as good as the quadrology of perfection that was Star Fox, Star Fox 2, Star Fox 64 and Star Fox Assault.
This video had me crying from beginning to end, and I'm wondering where did Terran Gell get the Peter Griffin smell her a little quote because I want to add it to my podcast when I want to make something awkward amongst my podcast mates.
Loved this game, but it seriously irritates the hell out of me that they didn't include an option for classic controls. I had a blast with the motion controls, but admittedly, a lot of problems could've been circumvented without them. Even a fucking patch addressing the aforementioned should be relatively easy to put together, but I guess not.
+Antichrist2000 So Yoshio Sakamoto for sure then, seeing as he was just credited as an artist on the first Metroid while Gunpei Yokoi and Makoto Kano held positions above him for the series formative first 3 entries, channeling his good ideas and creative character designs while keeping him under control. The first time he was at the helm resulted in Fusion, a game that piggybacks so hard off of Super's framework there was no way it wouldn't at least be playable, and one that definitely manages to have Sakamoto's innate creative visual design and knack for chilling concepts shine through with Tomoyoshi Yamane's talented artwork, but one which has a massive host of faults and is one of the most divisive games in the entire franchise. I actually really like Fusion on the whole, but it's an absolute chore to replay compared to other games in the series. Kind of like Episode VI in a lot of ways. Has a great framework to go off of from the first 2 entries, and Lucas's somewhat unfettered creativity lead to some of the most iconic moments and creature designs in the entire series, but one that also kind of fumbles its way through parts of the plot as Lucas's lack of skill when handling dialog, shot composition, and the cumbersome and unwieldy side of his creativity begin to show themselves.
Activision can produce solid games like to with Deadpool, the transformers "cybrerton" duo & devastation. The ps1, raimi tie in games and shattered dimensions spider-man game. Also vtmb.
+The Rageaholic Hey, I"ll take it, at this point I'll take it since I haven't had a good game since Star Fox Assault. For me I don't regret the buy, like I don't regret the buy of Metroid, other M, Not joking, I like Other M, Sure it's story could use an overhaul, but I'll take it. At this point I want that Halo/Metroid Crossover.
Me too, Platinum is a shining light in a generation of gaming that favours depressing brown visuals. But just because Razorfist finds them to be overrated doesn't mean we should like them less. ;)
Mr0303 But we also have from Platinum/Clover Studios: Okami, Vanquish, Madworld, Metal Gear Rising, God Hand, Viewtiful Joe, Bayonetta 2, The Wonderful 101, and Transformers Devastation. Personally I find their track record to be more hit than miss. :)
I mean I really really enjoy rising, bayonetta and Vanquish as well as their work as Clover, but Platinum are very overrated, once a company gets too hyped up their failings have a lot more impact.
I like them too. Heck, Transformers: Devastation is one of the best video games I've played in YEARS. But I'll be the first to admit, as far as their status in the industry is concerned, they are overrated. They occasionally thrown in QTE's for no discernible reason, their games can be BRUTALLY punishing at times, even unfairly so, they can't make a perfectly functional camera for the life of them and they have this odd thing with collectibles where they just can't seem to STOP HIDING THEM IN THE MOST CONVOLUTED OF WAYS IN THE MOST OBSCURE, ASININE LOCATIONS! Regardless, I generally enjoy their output, and I admire them for putting a lot of love, care, and attention in most of their games.
Look I'm not saying Star Fox is, or should be, that much of a standout in gaming when it comes to storytelling, but Christ Almighty it's annoying how they keep remaking the same friggin story. Literally half the games in this franchise is a retelling of the first game! WTH?! And yes, I understand that they at least add stuff in the remakes, but y'know who else adds stuff? The Ratchet and Clank Remake! And not only is it one of the better games out of that franchise, but it's also apart of a franchise where half the titles AREN'T just the first game over and over again.
I'm surprised he didn't hate the motion controls as much as a lot of reviewers but really it's Miyamoto to blame for that. He's a crazy old man that no one says no to. All the game has to do is patch in an option to turn off the motion controls and it would be fine. I did play that demo they put out recently. Arwing controls are fine. The Landmaster and Chicken walker are ok but that gyro copter is horrid. Starfox is like Sonic. It hasn't been good for years yet people keep demanding more of it expecting it to magically erase the sins of the past.
THIS IS THE ENEMY BIOWEAPON? But no seriously I like this review. I don't agree with everything you said but you gave the whole thing an honest shot. Most people just give up because "I dun wanna learn new controls" and call the game bad because of just that.
Only just recently discovered this channel and I come across this. Subsequently this the last game I preordered save for the Binding of Isaac on the Switch but I played that on pc before so I knew I wouldn't have any buyer's remorse. And that is what this game gave me. Am I the only who thinks if you tweak the controls and remove that godawful motion control shit then port it over to the Switch this would do well. The makings of a great Star Fox are sitting there in the game already just take that motion crap and it would a million times more playable and fun. Nevermind this is yet another reboot. It would be great to go on an actually successful console of Nintendo's since the N64. Nintendo classifies the Gamecube as a failure so my point stands. The best Star Fox games have gone on the successful Nintendo platforms DS not withstanding.
Zero was okay. Honestly though I'm still pissed that they retconned the entire story rather than just pick up from Assault. There was absolutely no reason to.
firstly love the G-Diffuser joke that was great. As for the game....heh I'll still get it. Why, many of you ask yes? Because its Star Fox and I HATED Command. I think looks (not by graphics) better than Command.
+Lupucillo glad I'm not alone for hating Command. It just seems like a cheap way to have ended it, more than half of the endings involves the team breaking up. I think there is only 1 maybe 2 that has the team stay together or add more members. I'll stick to the SNES, N64(remastered on 3DS), and the ones on GameCube.
+Lupucillo there are A LOT of fanfiction that is better than original story line. My absolute favorites are Chains of Fate, Syxx, and Survival in Frozen Hell. All epic
Idk, I thought the whole game (sans gyrocopter) was awesome. Took some getting used to, sure, but once I got a hang of the controls I was zip zoopin' and pew pewing like a Jedi with daddy issues.
Bio.Doctor i mean, graphically its impressive, the arwing missions are good, i think they just tried too hard and put too many gimmicks and bugs in it. Personally, im a fan of detailed story, even if it has repetetive gameplay.
Who would've thought that in 2016 Bethesda would bring a dead, old school franchise successfully but Nintendo would fuck theirs up (or Platinum in Nintendo's behalf)?
Pandering to gen x nostalgia seems to half of what Nintendo does now (the other half is chasing fads). I'm kind of surprised Razor fell for it at the start of the video. As for Starfox, it's like Sonic. Everyone has different ideas of what Nintendo should do to save it. But if we're honest, all they're going to do is remake the first one ad-nauseam. I think at this point, it would take a spiritual successor instead of a named sequel for Starfox to be good again. Personally, I'd like to see a Starfox game that goes into the mercenary side of things. Managing their own gear and equipment, choosing contracts and the like.
Was working on a fan game around that very concept a few years back, it was called Lylat Mercenaries. Took place in the original Star Fox cannon if Fox had gone 'Out of this Dimension'.
Correct me if I am wrong, but wasn't Platinum only on this project for asset creation (or something similarly minor)? I only ask because I believe most of their team is tied up with Scalebound right now.
Me: *full-body cringe-groan*
Razorfirst: "And that full-body cringe-groan you just let out..."
Sorcery...
"This franchise screamed REEEEEEEAAAAAAAAL good before it DIED!"
This is why I love you, raz0rfist.
That Clinton joke at the end is glorious and true. Thank you Razorfist, love your vids.
I literally did let out a full-body cringe-groan, too.
Whatever she says about Hillary can wait until tomorrow.
+Beef Patrol smart man.
That "Is that the enemy's Bioweapon" line with Hilary Clinton made me laugh for so long, I had to finish it in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber.
I demand a video of just the opening.
IT IS NECESSARY

Why the fuck is Nintendo so afraid of options menus? Forced motion controls brought down Skyward Sword too.
Harman Smith You seem to be in the minority with that opinion.

Harman Smith So have the many, many reviewers out there that thought the game was mediocre or bad, including this one.
Chris Agreed, that game was a complete turd baring a couple small exceptions here and there.
"Can't let you do that Razorfist."
"Nintendo has ordered us to take you down"
"Razor, long time no see!"
"Nintendos' enemies are my enemies!"
Every attack on Mrs Clinton causes me to say, from the bottom of my heart, thank you.
"Ok good. Now smell her a little." i full on belly laughed to the fifth dimension on that part alone. Not to mention the opening. Terran Gell... Never change!
Best reviewer on UA-cam, hands down

I'm gonna have to agree with that statement. Both Doug Walker and James Rolfe gave up that title a long time ago.
No one is more articulate than Razor
Bloody hell, Razor. That opening just---.... I literally choked on my tea and had to spit it out. XD
Good Lord, Razor, you were ripping the riffs like a boss. I had to watch this one twice to catch them all.
Great work.
The Hillary insults just get better and better every episode.
Great review as always Razor! Didn't expect for you to take on Star Fox Zero

Yeah don't get me started with Sticker Star... And Color Splash is looking to be a complete disaster too.
Harman Smith yes it is
And the best F-Zero game was made mostly by SEGA.
I love love love the quick little flash of an Aqua Teen reference. You're the best!!
From what I know, the stupid "use the gamepad to aim and move" shit wasn't Platinum's call, it was Nintendo's.
That opening was the best party political broadcast I've ever seen !...
"... the marksmanship of Dick Cheney in a moon bounce..." Your analogical prowess is beyond sublime and my sides have ascended to Valhalla after falling in a fit of frenzied laughter.
Awesome Review as always Razorfist, so glad to see you put in your thoughts on Star Fox Zero. So much potential lost on that game sadly.
i really love the gyro controls i was in an all range mode section going for a new high score when one ship flew past me down and to the right on my tv screen. in a purely reflexive action and in like half a second my eyes darted down to the gamepad jerked the cockpit view all the way down and to the right and got him right before he was about to be out of view i haven't had a moment like that in a video game feel so good in a very long time

I will always love this video's intro as a nifty time capsule for the 2016 election.
So you have a Wii U now? Cool! Maybe now you can play DK: Tropical Freeze!
if star fox zero only gave us the option to go either motion or traditional, it would've been the perfect star fox.
RustyLasagna it should've been option to play with either way not a forced to play what the devs want to play.
+Sckarton Not really. You're still left with a mediocre version of Star Fox 64. They should continue after Assault, and ignore Command.

It breaks my heart! I loved Star Fox as a kid. That and Mega Man!
The intro alone is gold!
More like Star Fox Zero out of Ten, amirite?
I regret that I can like this video just once, it deserves so much more.

lmao at the resident evil moon walk XD
I LOVE it when you release a new video

I miss Factor 5. They could have made this work.

Eh, TMNT is Activision cash-grab that they're known for besides milking their franchises.
So was Transformers, that didn't stop it from being good.
+CrimsonColossus Longer development time. We only knew about the TMNT game for 2 months before it released.
Activision can produce solid games like to with Deadpool, the transformers "cybrerton" duo & devastation. The ps1, raimi tie in games and shattered dimensions spider-man game. Also vtmb.
+The Rageaholic
Hey, I"ll take it, at this point I'll take it since I haven't had a good game since Star Fox Assault. For me I don't regret the buy, like I don't regret the buy of Metroid, other M, Not joking, I like Other M, Sure it's story could use an overhaul, but I'll take it. At this point I want that Halo/Metroid Crossover.
Guess you can say this game didn't SHINE upon you.
Given that I just replayed Bayonetta and beat metal gear revengence, I quite like platinum D:
Transformers Devastation doesn't get enough love. That's probably my favorite Platinum game...SOMEHOW. It may not be deep but it just FEELS good!
Maracopa=Perfection. I see what you did there. Here I am at night unto perfection languishing away in Pima.
I actually burst out laughing at 2:57 god bless you terran gell
I like the way you talk. The pretty pictures are nice too.
Someday I'll get through a Razorfist video without rewinding every 5 seconds
Well that one was a helluva roller-coaster.
star citizens developement? im here from 2020 and ive got something to tell you....
Olympian heights. I need to use that somewhere. Anywhere.
That PlatinumGames rant was so hot :3
Look I'm not saying Star Fox is, or should be, that much of a standout in gaming when it comes to storytelling, but Christ Almighty it's annoying how they keep remaking the same friggin story. Literally half the games in this franchise is a retelling of the first game! WTH?!
And yes, I understand that they at least add stuff in the remakes, but y'know who else adds stuff? The Ratchet and Clank Remake! And not only is it one of the better games out of that franchise, but it's also apart of a franchise where half the titles AREN'T just the first game over and over again.
Brilliant as always.
Lmao that opening. Brilliant
I'd love to see you talk about Platimun in a video. Seems like one of those developers that people think are either hit or miss
THIS IS THE ENEMY BIOWEAPON?
But no seriously I like this review. I don't agree with everything you said but you gave the whole thing an honest shot. Most people just give up because "I dun wanna learn new controls" and call the game bad because of just that.
I'm in deep thought about how this game could have actually been alright if the controls were normal.
"Thank you!' *gasp* "And Fuck you!" *sigh*.........LMAO!
That political commentary was epic
All epic
That opening
That thumbnail image will haunt my dreams.
Nice, looking forward to more.
great review as usual razorfist.
Idk, I thought the whole game (sans gyrocopter) was awesome. Took some getting used to, sure, but once I got a hang of the controls I was zip zoopin' and pew pewing like a Jedi with daddy issues.
sooooo...... in other words you...... liked it?
I think he's indifferent on it. :V
I think the word is ambivalent.
It seemed to me that he liked it but wanted more out of it.
Loved the opening!
I'm pretty sure that Platinum only assisted in making Zero and where clearly not in the driver's seat.
I chuckled at the MJ grunts.. Haha
Correct me if I am wrong, but wasn't Platinum only on this project for asset creation (or something similarly minor)? I only ask because I believe most of their team is tied up with Scalebound right now.
