F**k yea! Im loving this! I mentioned before that a lot of the other nations need more stories written in them… I just realized that Conan becomes public domain in five years…. I might have to start crafting a project.
I would say the Bossonians are more relatives to the Brythonic Celts (Welsh, Cornish, Bretons, Strat Cluth) than English, due to their positioning in Hyborea (South of Cimmeria which is where Ireland and Scotland will be, and west of Aquilonia) and by their skill with the longbow, something the Welsh were very much known for, they were the most feared archers within the English armies. Anglo-Saxons are definitely among the Æsir in Asgard.
You're not wrong, but you can only be right to a short extent. Whenever we equate a Hyborean culture to a real-life ethnicity, we soon hit walls in which the equation breaks apart. I think that the Picts have more in common with Meso-Americans than with the real-life tribe from which the name was borrowed. Bossonians might be Welsh but only slightly more than they are other things also.
I'm reading Savage Sword of Conan now. Book 4 has Conan the Buccaneer stories. I just read about the Amazons and their Demonic Plants yesterday. Good job covering these!
Great vid! I love Conan lore. Being Scandinavian nordheimer have to be my favorite race but i do like the Picts a lot and the Amazon black giant women are very interesting to.
so happy to see another conan video. I would really like to see a video about your personal headcanons about the lore and future of the series that were left unanswered.
I must honestly say that it is a joy sometimes to see that you are uploading especially in the Conan univers. because it is so complex also it. Aids me in my own personal writings. Thank you very much for all the hard work you put into these.
Astonishing cultural details that develops the universe of Conan in the era of Hyperbora! Trully all the races and other cultures!! Nor should I forget the other humanoid species such as the deep ones, the ape men, the serpent men and others!! Excellent compilation!! I'm already excited to see the video about Acheron and maybe one about the era of Thuria , Dreamlands himself and more!! Bravo!!
You know the last video sent me into exploring Brythunia, and I will probably do the same with one of these countries too. As I am writing I might also use this as a teaching moment as well because you can never be too good at worldbuilding. If I had to pick a favorite country in the World of Hyborea as per the question I find Brythunia has a lot of potential and seems like the perfect place for a hero to come from. I also like Zamora with it's spider God, because I find the religion to be interesting. What this says about me as a person I don't know. Great video as always.
@@Dexroid well there's a lot of nobles fighting for power there while other countries raid them and the King of Brythunia is all but powerless. I also find the Brythunia's native Goddess of Healing Wiccana to be interesting in and of herself. As for a Hero from Brythunia my writer's instinct tells me that a Robin hood like, clever but low class hero thwarting corrupt nobles and invaders while inspiring the common people to defend themselves to be perfect. Perhaps this Hero rises from his humble ranks and is held as an inspiration. A low Bandit turned Hero turned revolutionary, turned leader. Something like that could work. It would also provide a nice contrast to Conan, Kull, and Bran Mac Morn who are more warriors without being too far from a Robert E. Howard style story.
Another perfect video, really enjoyed the Poitain part. Personally I still read Aquilonia as being a mixture of Romano-Greek-Frankish culture/society (not to disagree too strongly). That said, it is a mystery how you can cover so much in so short a period of time. Gunderland, Meru Valley, Bossonian Marches & Amazons are societies that most intrigued me, and I gotta say Howard's Amazons creep me out now, so I'm gonna need to read what stories there are that include them.
Another well crafted video essay, Grim. So pleased I found a creator with so many interests that overlap with my own. Upon doing my own Conan lore deep dives a few years back, I found myself drawn to the Gundermen of Gunderland. I enjoyed that they were effectively forced to join, but not conquered by, Aquilonia. I believe Robert said the true Hyperborean stock ran through their veins most strongly, as they rarely interbred with the other races of Hyborea and kept no slaves. I believe the official religion is Mitra, but worship of Bori, the original diety, is common. Robert specifically wrote that no greater infantry existed in the world. I imagine this means their foot soldiers, working in an effective army, are the most effective, but not necessarily most superior warriors in duals or the like. Aquilonia itself is very easily identifiable for me. Cavalry and knights in the south (Poitan), archers in the west (Bossonian marches) and infantry in the north (Gunderland) and everything else in Aquilonia proper. Aquilonia's expansionist attitude seemed to me fairly Roman, but more technologically advanced. Question, where do you go for this lore? Is there any literature other than the direct source material you could direct us to? Thanks again.
Grim....Excellent as usual! Loving the Wholistic approach touching on all aspects of the Age. My Fav will always be the Brythunians because early on as a teen i read the comic on the Hyborian Age and those Blonde Women were Dreamy! :)
I just love your content. Your videos are my most anticipated things to come out of UA-cam. I run P&P games using Hyperborea 3e and finding inspiration for a setting derived from the works of Howard, Lovecraft and Smith isn't as easy as it is for more generic settings like Forgotten Realms. Your videos make it easier and make me want to abandon trolls, orcs, dwarves and dragons for gugs, ape-men, voormis and shoggoths.
Another wonderful video. Very informational. It's really nice that someone decided to Chronicle all this info about Hyboria. We who are about to watch Salute you Grim Dark!
I do not know how you don’t have more subscribers. Your videos are always good lengths while being incredibly informative. Keep up the great work dude!
Love your videos and I'm always happy when a new one arrive. Yet, I have one (hopefully constructive) critique. Please, add some pauses. It feels like you're rushing through the subjects and it feels stressful. You've got such a great voice, so use it to your advantage.
In the Hyborean Age Essay at the end of the period when the Turanians overan Shem and Stygia they struck deep into the Black Kingdoms, took a huge number of Amazonians as slaves and relocated them to the coast of Shem. There they bred with the local population and the other Turanian slaves to produce the proto-Cananites.
Hell yeah. Just what I needed. Thank you. I like Stygia mostly because I enjoy antagonists and villains. Cant be better than a Stygian Sorceress for that I think. Egyptian / middle eastern aesthetics is really cool and fit the setting.
What do you think inspired all the magic and demons/gods etc, Because Howard was obviously inspired by real life historical myths and records, But then what inspired those cultures to be that way, If we as a species are monkey see monkey do, then who did we see so we could do?
Seeing that the Bossonians are the closest analogue to the people of Cymru, the people of Wales, I'm wondering how a form of Draconic Shamanism (in the style of Y Ddraig Goch) could be done while also being faithful to the setting. I want to represent the Dragon as a positive force of nature, an incarnation of the natural world and its wrath, but also in a protective manner.
Its hard to pick one they are all cool for different reasons. Its like ice cream I love them all:)! Ok the stigians my egyptian undead army with a snake flavor is my favorite:)!!!
Can anyone give me a TLDR: I wanna roleplay an evil sorcerer who believes himself to be the heir of Acheron, which culture could be considered the closest related to the acheronians?
Great video, thanks to you i have started reading a lot robert e howard and i realized that i like way more low fantasy than high fantasy. Is there any any culture in conan the barbarian based on the inkas or south america? Blessings from peru and i apologize for my english
damm i did not know about the amazonians and i made very simmilar trees in my world damm. well but i am happy that a great mind like howards had the same idea.
Along with Angkhor seems like a direct reference to Angkor Wat, Kambuja sounds similar to Cambodia, it's main influence should be Cambodia/Khmer rather than Viet or Taiwan
Yeah that more has to do with the picture I used which I regret because even though I’m aware it uses a similar name to Cambodia it’s culture does seem to take from different aesthetics. I was very mislead by a forum.
i didn't realize conan lore was so expansive, been binging all your videos
Thanks! Tombalku tribes and grey ones are next in this series!

Didn't know that about Wales. Good info.
Great observation!
That's very correct! We basically destroyed a Norman army in Ceredigion West Wales with nothing but longbows.
Sounds like bosnians
