This music is so complex and difficult to analyze. It's got an 11/4 overall meter that breaks into 6/8 which is awesome. Then we also have the background melody that's also in 11/4 but is played against the established 11/4 meter presented by the bass and vocals. It creates a very chaotic feeling while also being very relaxing in tone due to the droning background melody and instrumentation. Then there's the static noises in the background that sound as though someone put a flanger effect and a distortion effect on some synthesized vst. That really creates a nice juxtaposition between the tonal music and the noise, much like the juxtaposition of Saya's appearance compared to the rest of Fujimori's world. Very well done.
Actually, the first measure is in 7/8 and then it switches to 11/8. I tried to transpose this once, but gave up because of those fucking high notes at 3:41 that seem to be in no time signature at all.
First time I played the V.R I was like "oh I get it it's a beautifull track for the innocent girl and a scary one for the background"... God I was wrong.
Am I the only one who felt feelings of empathy for Fuminori. He lost humanity and place in the world he once belonged to. His senses were completely destroyed, the ones he loved had became monsters to him, and even if he tried to get help they would have just put him in an insane asylum. His only saving grace that brought him back to humanity was a monster who was shunned like him in the real world.
You're not. In fact I would say the ambiguity concerning whether Fuminori is an "evil" person is intentional. We all see how his world is totally messed up by his warped perception, and we see with our own eyes his descent into madness, murder and cannibalism, all in the while uncertain if we could do better if we were in his shoes. It's an indication of Urobuchi's good writing even before he accomplishes something like PMMM.
The novel in itself is awesome, but I don't know if it would have been the same without this OST. It completely sets the right mood. Incredible stuff for such a short VN. Love it and always will. I like in particular how your preferred ending actually tells so much about yourself. That's the sign of great art.
the uneven rhythm of the music box notes (at least what sounds like it?) sounds so alive, i can't even describe it. the way it sort of folds, unfolds, and seem to reverse itself in its place, there's just so much going on in this music i keep coming back to try to grasp it better.
currently reading this, it's great. not nearly as disturbing as people made it out to be. I chose to abandon my humanity because I feel like if I was Fuminori that's what I would do.
These two, as well as Sin, offered the brilliant contrast to most of the rest of the soundtrack, and really helped in giving you an idea of what Fuminori's view of the world was like. The songs are hauntingly beautiful, just like Fuminori's vision of Saya. The music was an essential part of the game, and great on its own, too.

The nature of some of the sex scenes was quite, how do i put it, revolting, though i think they were there mainly to show how the primal nature of fuminori began to shine though and how much his personallity changed due to his condition and saya, actually it hadn't changed all that much, he still felt empathy and much of the other emotions, though only for his own race and not for the people he viewed as monsters which shows that no matter how much we do like/enjoy something it doesn't mean everyone will also enjoy it, another person may consider it disgusting. His new perception of the world destroyed all the features of it he once found pleasurable though through that also opened him up to another world which may have been unpleasurable once before but now he greets with open arms.. You could say he was lucky in a way, in his lifetime to be able to percieve the world in the complete opposite way to which everyone else percieves it and to be able to join saya in her solitude. It show's that if you love someone so much you don't care about anyone else or anything else and can survive as long as you can be with them even in a world which is completely alien to you, if you disregard the gore, blood violence, rape on the surface and take another perspective when you read the visual novel, you'll see that the essence of the story is about overcoming isolation, loneliness, living in a place which is no longer your own, living with people/entities which make you want to vomit just by being around them, and essentially, its a love story, and one of the best i've ever read as it does something completely new and is not full of stereotypes though not exactly something for everyone
Andreas Ährlund-Richter Of course he knew that he was eating his friends, he discovered quite early in. You could say he went insane, he believed his friends were against him (which shows how his reasoning had completely reversed), so there was no point in keeping them alive anymore and he gave into his basic instincts (food, shelter, reproduction) which was basically his driving factor. And..i think that other girl wasn't exactly there for the fanservice, but to add to the shock factor, because all they're doing in the VN is basically stacking on the pressure, right until the end
I dunno if anyone has ever read the Animorphs books in their youth, but there was a certain installment in the series (Book 19) that dealt with shedding some light on the main antagonists which were a race of parasites. Anyway your post reminded me of that.
The only thing that could explain it was the sudden change of mood during this scene. Saya showed up at Suzumi's house to simply see if her guinea pig saw her in human form. The twist, however, was that Suzumi thought he has to destroy Saya's innocence in a world gone mad, while Fuminori wanted nothing more then to hold onto it as a beacon of sanity. Suzumi's decision to rape Saya was a complete shock to Saya and sent her into paralyzation, which is why she couldn't defend herself.
I was expecting this to sound different from what we got in Nitro Royale. Little did i know Nitro+ actually used the original track from this game for that game. It really sounds good tho. Im thinking about reading through this VN here.
Well, yeah, that's obviously her ultimate goal. I'm not arguing with that. It's just that at certain times she seemed naive, innocent almost. On one instance she had to be reminded by Fuminori that humans do feel pain. That's what I mean.
Renato Mendes If you think carefully, the song makes you wish to listen to the singers voice in order to ignore the creepy noises, just like the main character only wished to see saya among all the other horrid creatures he saw
Saya couldn't kill Suzumi because all of her murders relied on surprise and shock. Saya confronts Suzumi removing an element of surprise, and since Suzumi saw Saya in her human form, her shock factor was removed. Contrast to every other attack (even against pre-change Suzumi) where either Saya has the first strike which lead into a quick defeat, and/or her victim seeing Saya's true form and mentally breaking.
so you never looked up from the screen and asked yourself "why am i doing this to myself?" while playing saya no uta? i sure did, but still love this game
Well, I dunno why, but whenever I heard this song... there's a chill run down my spine. Maybe it's doubled because I know, what is behind that cute and small figure of Saya... well, not really know (because it will never been showed ^^), but at least from the explanation, I can somehow 'know' what Saya really is ^^
Well, even as a man, I don't see why women can't enjoy this great story. Even if there's some sex scene, but if we are focused on the story, we can see how unique (of course, is in the disturbing one) the story is ^^ And I love how the story end with us asking of something... in Saya no Uta, we will be asking about moral, ethics, sanity and insanity, and of course, humanity ^^
The fact that the game allows you to play as kouji and murder Fuminori and Sayaka in a horrible way tells you a lot about how sick Fuminori really was.
Just finished all 3 endings of this, absolutely loved it! Are there any other VN's or anime similar to this?(Seen higurashi and many others like it, but still feel free to recommend)
@Blindcrow2008 That's the beauty of Saya no Uta. We're supposedly looking through the monster's point of view (Fuminori's distorted vision) and to the monsters, humans are the monsters. Sure, Saya did something horrible to Yoh, but Kouji also did something horrible to Saya (and Yoh) by whacking them with a steel rod. We think it's justifiable since Fuminori and Saya are out to kill him, but then again if Kouji was going to kill them, was it justifiable for Saya to kill him in defense? Probably.
Besides, the sex was plot relevant. When you know the ending, Saya's behavior during those scenes suddenly makes a terrifying sense. Saya doesn't necessarily like sex for pleasure. It's more the pleasure of collecting more samples...
If sex is instinctual pleasure, Saya's is basically the same. She doesn't know that she's collecting samples because of that ultimate goal, she's just hardwired to want it, like we are hardwired to reproduce. The whole point of most of the story was to convey some measure of humanity within Saya, or else it'd be another plotless horror story. She really did love Fuminori, and Fuminori was once a normal human being. It adds an element of tragedy and emotions besides fear and disgust.
i had to take several hours to recollect myself after going through some parts. also i had odd/strange dreams after going through this while ive heard other people had some nightmares after instead.
Parts of Song of Saya II sound like they are played in reverse. Does anything happen to those parts if the whole thing is played in reverse so that they will be played forwards?
Oh sweet! Well even if you decided to drop the series, I'd definitely recommend reading book 19th at least! It's one of their better entries, in my opinion.
Huh, this is one of the last VNs I would expect teenage girls to read. Well, not to knock the BL genre, but it's nice to see some people have great taste. :p
I dont think she wasnt aware that humans feel pain, it felt more like she was surprised that Fuminori still has those kinds of emotions and doesnt want to hurt people (or mb only Yoh) if unnecessary
It fills me with such grief that it is unlikely that something as compelling as this will never be written again. I firmly believe this novel is the absolute zenith of human accomplishment in literary endeavors. I've yet to scratch the surface of humanity's collated works, but there remains the extant fact that in 4 years of searching, nothing has eclipsed the sheer emotional impact of this work. For me, The Stranger, and The Tale of Genji came near to equaling this piece. I have such remorse for readers that this novel is in such an inaccessible format. It's quality would be diminished otherwise, however.
As the OP of this comment (posting on different account) I want to say that the only thing worse than the pretentiousness of this comment are the grammatical errors in it. Nevertheless, I fully stand by this comment two years later. Saya no Uta is simply one of the best books ever written. It's the sort of thrilling book you can't put down. It's the sort of book that is written with transcendental meaning, but only if one can spot it. Like a liturgical text, Saya no Uta fills us with meaning. It teaches the transitory nature of consciousness. How do we know we are seeing something for what it really is? Does it matter? Saya no Uta doesn't tackle these questions in a fanciful and childish way, but with brutal, gruesome viscerality. It is our passion for the teachings of Saya's image that makes her image real, even if we may only materialise it in the Astral sense; the sense not bound to the ordinary consciousness which Saya rebukes. Saya no Uta is meaningful because it teaches us how to live as human beings like so few other texts. The full import of Saya not Uta is only known when one speaks of this metaphysical meaning.
That's a pretty accurate description. What I found hard to believe was that Saya, despite being strong enough to break necks and pull bodies around, and with the capability to completely reconstruct organisms, could still not overpower Suzumi. I mean, even if he was raping her, Saya has multiple appendages that can be used for these purposes.
jast is a company that re releases japanese visual novels in english so you don't have to go through the hassle of getting an english patch, plus their games are normally updated, they are also making school days HQ atm
@Annaleebie Even if you put it that way, what makes her different from humans? From the cow's point of view, we are bloodthirsty murderous creatures who butcher them for our own hamburgers and steaks and meals. Even if you factor in the mindrapist, don't scientists do animal testings to see if new medicine or surgical procedures are safe to use on humans? So to lab mice, we are mindrapists too, aren't we? As for babies, don't we eat chicken eggs, and to that extent baby chickens?
Ah yes, you're right. I don't know about ero scene, but the guro content is because the murder is so gruesome, and all of the murder is in really details for us to see. But the story is actually good. Well, back to Saya no Uta, I'm always love to see how Urobuchi Gen portrait the darkness and psychological conflict in human nature.
I have to say, this is the best audio novel I've read yet. (well, It's my first...) This song somehow I find beautiful but when I think about it, it's insanely creepy. >.>
One of the best games I've ever played, it kind of had a fairy tale format but it was disturbing and sickening, and also beautiful. Can't fucking wait for the Jast release.
And they all take a bow. And the physician goes "Hmm, that's an interesting act", which I know is kind of an understatement, 'cause you're probably saying, if you have any sense of human decency, "Well, why didn't the physician just stop them in the beginning?" "Why didn't she stop them the minute she heard the lunatic talk about the demented doctor, and say 'This is totally wrong, someone call the cops and I'll sneak out, something horrible is happening!'
Saya isn't an evil creature. She was killing because that's really all she knows. Her intentions are not to hurt people. When she was attacked like that she felt fear for probably her first time as well as pain like she had been causing to others.
The atmosphere of this VN is so fucking well done. It NEVER settles down. Even if it's a normal scene with someone other than Fuminori, it still feels tense because of the music. The music in this game did it for me. It's just constantly making you feel anything but comfortable and I love it.

Well, yeah, that's obviously her ultimate goal. I'm not arguing with that. It's just that at certain times she seemed naive, innocent almost. On one instance she had to be reminded by Fuminori that humans do feel pain. That's what I mean.
There is something very wrong with this music. I love the manner it tries mix something creepy with some kind of child song.
Renato Mendes If you think carefully, the song makes you wish to listen to the singers voice in order to ignore the creepy noises, just like the main character only wished to see saya among all the other horrid creatures he saw
This song has sold me on the game
Heavens Feel or Fate/Stay Night in general is great but Saya no Uta is on an entirely different level.
I still have this VN in my Laptop.....watching me all day....just asking and begging for me to play it again.....
this music. I can feel my sanity slip away and i cant turn it off.
This song gives me the creeps but I keep coming back to listen to it. It's hauntingly beautiful!
I think I broke somwhere along the way through the VN
really well dam
I actually enjoyed the storyline of this Visual novel quite a bit. I'd love to see an anime based on this.
I have it downloaded but I wasn't going to try it until later. Thanks for the suggestion, I'm bumping it up my list.
Со любимая песня с этой игры
How are "being a mass of flesh" and "capable of feeling pain" mutually exclusive? They tend to go together, in fact.
Well, I dunno why, but whenever I heard this song... there's a chill run down my spine. Maybe it's doubled because I know, what is behind that cute and small figure of Saya... well, not really know (because it will never been showed ^^), but at least from the explanation, I can somehow 'know' what Saya really is ^^
The VN is just perfect
Finally, a true +18 game! yup, a single choice makes story a game xD
There are even TWO choices, though!
Lol... I prefer to call Saya no Uta, as a Novel rather than a game ^^a
Song of Saya and SHIZOPHRENIA are somehow similar despite being the opposites of each other
You mean like song of saya is saya's theme and SCHIZOPHRENIA is funenori's theme?
Interesting
Well, even as a man, I don't see why women can't enjoy this great story. Even if there's some sex scene, but if we are focused on the story, we can see how unique (of course, is in the disturbing one) the story is ^^ And I love how the story end with us asking of something... in Saya no Uta, we will be asking about moral, ethics, sanity and insanity, and of course, humanity ^^
Don't act like women don't like sex just as much as men.
Schmidt Hendrix Yeah, I'm not a guy and I enjoyed this game. The sex scenes didn't bother me either, although they weren't exactly my taste
Lindsay Nichole Your picture is giving me cancer.
Not a fan of anime I presume?
Lindsay Nichole I love anime, just not shitty anime.
Played non stop until finish it by all ends.
Became nearsighted for the rest of the day.
This song is too creepy... but it's healing me.........
Probably.
I haven't read this visual novel yet, but does the fact that she is depicted as human mean that even monsters have "humanity" within them?
Besides, the sex was plot relevant. When you know the ending, Saya's behavior during those scenes suddenly makes a terrifying sense.
Saya doesn't necessarily like sex for pleasure. It's more the pleasure of collecting more samples...
Same here, played 5h, and did all of the 3 endings, first ending i got was my favorite, the one where saya "gives birth"
I'm a female, and Saya no Uta is my favorite story of all time.
I really love horror games and VNs. So yes, here I am o/
Nice to see i'm not alone
NotKawaiiEnough yeah sadly this masterpiece would be forgotten
Keivarae Badie This really is a masterpiece
Try MuvLuv Alternative
Better love story than Twilight.
I found this novel deeply disturbing, but completely amazing at the same time.
me gusta esta melodia
sirve para recapacitar
+German Chura Mérida Aja se siente algo extraña la cancion pero es buena, combina con el juego de saya no uta
I would love a anime of Sya no Uta.
J'ai adoré ce VN !
Amazing.
Why can't I hold all these feels?
Saya isn't an evil creature. She was killing because that's really all she knows. Her intentions are not to hurt people. When she was attacked like that she felt fear for probably her first time as well as pain like she had been causing to others.
I'm a 14 year old girl, dude your fine. I've read the PV 2 times. This is my favourite song.
