    Wow! I’ve never understood what Live Photos were, and, frankly, found the feature really annoying because half the time it just did its thing for no apparent reason, and I didn’t know how to stop it. NOW I get it, and I’m definitely going to be taking advantage of this feature in creative ways. Thank you SO much for the excellent demo and explanation!❤

    I'm not sure if it's changed on the latest models, but at least on my iPhone 12 the video part of the live photo is considerably less resolution and quality than the photo itself. That means if you change the key photo to a video frame, it upscales such that the new key photo is lower quality.

    • @macmost
      @macmost  Рік тому

      That shouldn't be the case at all. The original implementation from years ago did this, but for a long time the quality should be the same.

    • @JosephWestrupp
      @JosephWestrupp Рік тому

      @@macmost Easy enough to test. Export an unmodified original of a live photo and check the video resolution. For it to be the same quality, each video frame would have to be 12MP (not to mention the rest of the processing the iPhone does to still images).

    • @macmost

      Are you sure they are filling up storage? They really don't take up very much more space. Seems like they should, but they are saved in a clever way (changes to frames, not whole frames). There's no way I can think of to bulk convert them.

A question for a future video: how can one manage the size of their photos library? i’m toying with the idea of migrating all my photos from file directories and google photos into this app, but after less than a year i’m already over 200gb. What are some strategies for keeping the size down to be more manageable over years?

    • @macmost

      The main strategy I use is to keep videos elsewhere. I use Photos for photos, and store videos as files (well-named and organized). That's not going to work for everyone, but my huge Photos library is smaller because it is just photos.

    Very useful. I never thought about the different uses of Live Photo. I always thought of it as a gimmick. However, now I understand more about the setting. I will use it more. However, doesn’t it cause issues when backing up these photos to sites other than iCloud? Specifically, OneDrive?

    • @macmost
      @macmost  Рік тому

      How are you "backing up" to OneDrive, exactly? You take a photo on your iPhone in the Camera app and you end up with a Live Photo in your Photos App Library. What are you doing then to get it to OneDrive? I don't use OneDrive but I suppose you could test it in OnDrive and see, though you'd need an app that can actually understand what a Live Photo is.

    • @mehmd1913
      @mehmd1913 Рік тому

      @@macmost so OneDrive has a camera/picture/video upload feature. I have it turned on on my iPhone. I have redundant photos/video back up. When you open OneDrive it starts the process for uploading and backing up photos and videos. It only operates when the app is open as Apple doesn’t allow for OneDrive to operate uploads in the background. There is a feature to allow for a faster upload when the phone is charging and idle as long as the app is open. It is interesting that the app will upload all photos even if the photo is deleted on the iPhone. I have been using it for years as I was on android and Blackberry OS systems for years. I switched to iPhone 2.5 years ago. I have used Mac’s for 16 years. I also use MS OS at work. So a mixed environment.

    As far as I can test if you change the main photo of the Live Photo you get a frame of the hidden MOV video file (exporting to my MacBook I get the heif for the photo and the mov of the video sort in one folder, exporting with “all info data”), and the video in my iPad Pro 2017 is 1080p. So lower resolution and crops the image a little compared to the real photo as the video capture doesn’t use the full sensor but a section in the center.
    Also I didn’t know Live Photos gives you the weight of the actual photo but excluding the video mov file attached to it, so careful there about a hidden space grabber.

    • @macmost
      @macmost  Рік тому

      Are you using an older Live Photo from years ago? Or maybe you have HEIF turned off in Camera settings? If you set the Key Photo to any frame, and then export that image, you get full resolution.
      Another issue may be you are using an iPad Pro from 2017 which doesn't have the cameras that the iPhone has. Not even close. So it may not be able to capture true Live Photos in the way an iPhone can.

    • @manart6506
      @manart6506 Рік тому

      @@macmost yeah I can only test for my iPhone 7, iPhone 11 (this one takes 1440p live video) and the iPad Pro 2nd gen… no idea of the quality of newer models. But do newer models take the video part of Live Photo at 4K?, that would be better but still lower than the 12mp photo, and still every iPhone uses a smaller center area of the sensor to capture video isn’t it?
      *1) in regards of space I am guessing one reason the photo doesn’t include the size of the video portion is that I think if you take several Live Photos in sequence those photos share the same video file and each live photo just takes a portion of that video when doing Live tasks & exporting.
      *2) Something weird is that the Live Photo (iPhone 11) playback seems to make a little zoom, but I just checked the exported video of the Live Photo in iPad and it is zoomed… YET when imported to LumaFusion it doesn’t seem to crop or very minimal if any (as if the video has more info that only can be seen in LumaFusion), also with VLC in Max shows the full image of the video. Weird. 😵‍💫… maybe to leave room for that stabilization done if one chooses to do the Loop and other effects, yet when I choose a new main frame for the photo it doesn’t use all the area but it is a little zoomed in.

    • @macmost
      @macmost  Рік тому

      @@manart6506 Not sure of the internal format of the HEIC, but you can select any frame of a Live Photo taken with the last few iPhone models, then change the Key frame, then export a full resolution photo. If you export video it changes it to video, so that's not a way to test it. Each frame of the Live Photo is full resolution. But older iOS and older iPhones wI suppose still do version 1 where it was a video.

      @@macmost but is it possible to alter the digital file being a live photo and it remains a live photo? And can it be done on the iPhone 13 without having to use a downloaded 3rd party app? And can it be done in a 12 Max pro without using a 3rd party app? Is there a way to see the added audio over or with a digital image file basically seeing both of the files… can I send you the image?

      @@Lisaamyshook No you can't do it easily. You would need some know-how and maybe some tools. I don't know your situation here and I'm probably not the one you should be talking to if you suspect foul play or a danger here.

    except for water, i don't see how this feature is helpful. especially if i am documenting just normal stuff like paperwork, my garden features, landscape (with no water), etc. it shouldn't be the default.
