Dwayne The Rock Johnson stars as a different kind of superhero: One who doesn't play by the rules, wear a cape, tell jokes but DOES KILLS PEOPLE! ...which, y'know, actually most other superheroes do, come to think of it. ...and also he tells jokes and wears a cape. He's bald, though! That's new. Anyway, hierarchy is something something I guess 🤷♂️
“They did a whole movie on how not letting them do war crimes is the worst war crime”😂🤣👍🤩🤯
Hawkman "Heroes Don't Kill People." Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and Aquaman look at eachother "I think he means you."
Also the guy with the mace. Y'know. That very peaceful weapon.
Yes but that is something you teach kids. It's a kid's worldview. In the grown up world killing someone is sometimes justified or even the prefered choice.
@@mabusestestament Still weird since all the heroes with their own movie have killed (except Shazam), In arrowverse it would make a bit of sense since most don't kill and the ones that do are trying to not. As it is it seems like they forgot their own movies.
Yeah that is weird but DC has been weird like that since they wanted to course correct and then course correct that course correct and then course correct that.
It's also funny that some people (I'm not saying you of course 🍻) would complain Superman killed Zod (which of course he did, what idiot wouldn't) but they would never complain he killed Doomsday 😊
@@mabusestestament I mostly think that was bad because I don’t think they did it well. Since Superman should be able to stop him in many ways and once he’s willing to kill then how is someone like Lex a threat? Also when he snapped Zod’s neck to save the random family, He turned his head in the detection they were in so they would be cut in half. Also after killing Zod and screaming he was fine in the next scene, so it didn’t seem to effect him much anyway. I thought the movie (Man of Steel) was boring other than the end fight, because I like DBZ and that was basically a DBZ fight(only they can wish everyone back after so the collateral damage isn’t as bad)
Something that really stood out to me as a very odd decision is… [minor spoilers]
Why is Amanda Waller the “Nick Fury” of this universe? Not just Waller in general, like why THIS version of Waller? Yeah Fury isn’t perfect but at least his shady stuff serves the greater good. This Waller has acted selfishly and only serves the American government. Her actions prove she doesn’t give a damn about the greater good. But oh NOW she’s suddenly the trusted quarterback for superheroes calling plays? It also adds to the weird “we don’t kill” rule that suddenly exists. Waller herself has killed SO many people. And now she’s suddenly the moral high ground.
That's a slap in the face to every prior version of Waller going back to the original concept by John Ostrander. But as to why...well, the Nick Fury angle kind of answers that question right there. When WB rips off Marvel Studios, it always does so badly.
@@johnathonhaney8291 You said it perfectly. Even James Gunn fucked up ripping off himself. When he was willing to let The Suicide Squad be its own, nasty thing it was very enjoyable. When the third act tried to retrofit it into being the Guardians of the Galaxy: Banana Republic? Fell flat and fell hard.
@@chavesa5 It also really made me wish the third act was for a Justice League movie. Because Starro is the original villain in the very first Justice League comic book.
@@Vinny792 What it felt like, was that the Justice League actually needed to show up while The Suicide Squad fucked off to do Suicide Squad things. That kind-of anti-climax would have been ballsy enough to work.
And Superman, the guy who she formed the Suicide Squad to kill & whose solo movie ended with him giving the middle finger to the government also works for her & thinks he can lecture Black Adam, who was pretty careful about collateral damage, on the importance of not killing people.
It still blows my goddamn mind that some studios will copyright claim reviews using nothing but public footage from the trailers. Talk about insecure.
Their claims aren't even legal.
@Crissa
I'm not so sure
Last time this happened to Mr. Chipman vis-a-vis WB was with WW84. Telling, yes?
No lie, the Justice Society have so little introduction that my dad was surprised when I told them they hadn't been another movie before.
The bit about Black Adam being "bad" because he's willing to kill falling flat due to that just being what superheroes do now in general is so on-point. When you've already established that even Superman is willing to kill, I feel like that alone isn't enough to make a character "bad" or even all that morally gray anymore.
Hence, the main problem with Snyder trying to jump start a universe with a murderous Superman. No one is distinct now. Batman and Superman's "no kill" rule should distinguish them from Wonder Woman, Aquaman and many other heroes in the DCEU, but nooooo there's nothing distinct about anyone's morality until suddenly it serves a plot (like in Black Adam)
They should have rebooted this nonsense a long time ago
@@victory7763 That they have not speaks volumes as to their ongoing incompetence and inborn nepotism.
You could have an interesting debate if the argument was "Black Adam is quick to kill. It's not his go to solution but if you're over a certain power level and don't stop the first time he asks you die" vs "Superman (or insert) only kills as an 100% last resort. Only when it's been proven that the villain literally cannot be contained or stopped from harming innocents in any other way "
Was Superman really that murderous or just reluctantly willing to kill Zod to save his adopted home in an act that obviously horrified himself?
@@Chrismw81 In the case of Superman, as MovieBob and many others have pointed out, Superman's character in the DCEU is so ill-defined that they didn't bother to establish that Superman doesn't kill in this universe. After all, his fights with the Kryptonians have so much collateral damage and he displays such a lack of concern for the safety of others during those fights that him being horrified over killing Zod feels kind of odd. Either way, though, reluctant or not, the fact that he was willing to kill was kind of the point of my original comment, and why Black Adam doesn't feel so unique in that his defining characteristic of how much of an anti-hero he is is that he's willing to kill (though to be fair, I suppose Black Adam is more self-assured here compared to Superman in Man of Steel).
Oh hey I remember this review. It actually made me kinda curious to check out the video, but if DC is being really shady to reviewers then maybe I'll just continue not watching any of these movies.
The fact that they put so much effort in putting Hawkman in this movie, and yet never mention a word about his Egyptian roots and reincarnations throughout history, is a crime. They could easily have had a scene about Hawkman 'remembering' Kahndaq and/or Black Adam, a scene contrasting his many lives with the cruel times that Black Adam lived through or something else.
That would require more competent creative personnel. Pretty safe bet they're all gone now from WBD.
Wait, bad CG, only tangently connected to the franchise it is in, vanity project for one specific actor, Wayne Johnson? This is Scorpion King!
@@steveschenker1380 Well sorry, key-stick.
@@steveschenker1380 Well sorry, key-stick.
Rewatched and reliked. I can't believe Warner Bros Discovery copyright claimed _this_ .
And THIS is why I have no faith in James Gunn taking over DC film productions. Zaslav will micromanage anything he does.
They claim trailer footage all the time. They're historically pretty awful in that regard
@@DynamicSheep But why NOW? Usually, it's a fairly swift copyright strike from them. Instead, this film is nearing the end of its run and the review's existence affects that in no way, shape or form.
Didn't think about it when Bob first uploaded this review, but _Black Adam_ probably prevented Marvel from casting The Rock as Namor
His loss, Tenoch Huerta's gain.
Good
I see Warner Discovery is up to their usual tricks.
calling WW Birkenstock still cracks me up
Flipping and decolorizing as a work-around is both genius and hilarious. 😆
And un-HDing it.
Sure as shit less annoying than removing picture of it (looking at you, WB goons who went after Mr. Chipman's review of WW84).
Funny thing, before I watched the prior review video my take on this movie was the exact same as it is here. However, I got bombarded with nothing but hate from people who couldn't comprehend how I can enjoy a movie that I don't think is at all good. DC fans are truly not of this world.
Good video btw, Bob, glad to see it up again.
No hate if you liked the film from me, friend. I see this as the DC equivalent of The Satanic Rites of Dracula, a late period entry in a film cycle that isn't COMPLETELY worthless but has problems it can't quite overcome. My beef and that of Mr. Chipman remains with the company behind it.
Also I do think I liked your earlier idea that the Rock should have played Lex Luthor, that sounds like it could have been fun with him in the role.
Doing interesting things with the Superman franchise is forbidden. No. We want boring male model Henry Cavill who can stand around and look pretty. Who the fuck wants a Superman who is a character? Or a Lex Luthor who actually reflects the Conservative Upper Class toxicity of the 21st Century?
The Rock playing a genius? Nah.
I'd watch that.
We all know that Lex is superior to the Joker but he's not as fun or interesting. But Lex is more intelligent & in a brawl, Lex would win in a few wicked quick punches & kicks.
I could see the Rock staring down Superman like 'Nah man. YOU'RE GOING DOWN.'
@@mabusestestament Ah, but the Rock playing a bully who "grinded" his way to the top with a "Sigma Male" mindset who flashes a suspiciously large amount of inherited wealth around to get other people to do his crazy ideas, visibly jealous that someone with arms smaller than him can lift more without a crazy supplement regimen?
I want to see the Rock play THAT Lex. That sounds like the type of dude who would get REALLY pissy about Superman just, existing, and make it everyone's problem.
@@chavesa5 the kind of guy who gets what he wants either with money or pure charisma, it'd be great
I thought this was an alright film. It's not ground-breaking but it's fun enough for the most part and a good action romp. It also looks really nice with very cool VFX for the powers throughout. I also really enjoyed Brosnan as Dr Fate. He really sold that for me.
Another post, another watch and like from me. Keep up the great work, Bob!
Can’t help but feel the claim was less to do with rightful copyright and more not liking a bad review
Sounds about right.
It's not even a bad review.
And adjusted for Moviebob inflation it is actually a good review 🍻
@@mabusestestament 'What if I don't like it?'
' _THAT'S WHAT GOOD IS FOR._ '
Not just a bad review, but a bad review that doesn't mince words in a way that anyone can understand, at a time when the company as a whole is feeling fragile yet trapped under the rich fraternity weight of Good Old Boys like Geoff Johns and Jim Lee. The leadership has failed and everyone knows it. This was their one big shot to get weird and edgy and they blew it, and people closer to the heart of fandom called it, and all they can do is be salty.
@@chavesa5 That's STILL too kind, friend. It's also an indictment of the current leadership under Zaslav, who sacrificed WAY too many viable projects on a debased altar yet spared THIS so-so movie because of the Rock and prior deals.
WB Discovery: Wait. Someone is making a critique on one of our products under fair use? Copyright strike him! We need to monetize everything! Our shareholders demand it.
Ironically, Mr. Chipman here IS one of their shareholders...as he noted in the review here.
Saw this one in theaters, and it was pretty fun, but man there were a lot of cringy things in the movie that really brought it down for me.
Also, I'm surprised they didn't do a romance between the leads, like not even a little bit. It's usually a given in stuff like this. Heck Adam and Hawk Man had more sexual tension than anyone else lol.
Pretty typical for a late period film in an overall cycle, sadly. I don't expect we'll see better any time soon.
It's both working from old scripts back when The Rock being appealing to women was considered too threatening to mediocre white dudes AND a plant for the Isis storyline later, where they ostensibly would fall in love.
For my friend Al Go Rithm
Go, Al, Go!
I assume this is one I'll see the action scenes from uploaded online in a few months, and I imagine that'll be a better way to experience it. I don't love that Warner Bros. has put me into that position with film but here we are.
always a pleasure to watch a review from Bob
I am interested in Pierce Brosnan as Dr Fate, apparently he's one of the best things in it!
Thanks plant.
He was! Honestly, him and Aldis Hodge as Hawkman were the highlights of the entire film for me. Cyclone and Atom Smasher were fine, but SEVERELY underused IMO, which was a shame. They were played by good actors and deserved more time to shine.
@@jeremyadler9620 maybe they can persuade a horror director to step in and do a decent superhero team up movie like they did for The Suicide Squad!
@@chavesa5 IF I'M A PLANT WHY DO I BLEED RED??? WHY DO I BLEED RED???
@@Rozilla, While I'm not a huge horror fan, I could get behind this idea :)
100% agree. CW with a bigger, wasted budget garbage. DC should refund every paid ticket with compensation for wasting out time!
Thanks for the review, sorry you had to go through all the hassle of reediting
Find it somewhat funny that you're kinder than almost any other reviewer I've seen, yet they still go after you.
Indeed but only to the movie is he kind. Our Mr. Chipman took a different tack with WBD. To paraphrase Harlan Ellison in the opening section of his essay "Xenogenesis", their management is not worthy of kindness and he was not kind in his remarks.
I saw it since the original review. It was ... all right. My friend complained there it felt like one long action sequence making the story hard to follow. Another friend commented on the overreliance on CGI and slow-mo effects.
And this is going to be a nitpick, but the second A in SHAZAM in this case stands for Aton which was an Egyptian deity brought in to replace the others and change the religion to monotheistic. It would be like collecting a bunch of deity names from the middle east and putting Enki and Zuul along with Jesus. But I guess making an acronym work is more important.
I mean, the Billy Batson list of deities both muddled up Greek and Roman names and also chucks Solomon in there as a complete odd one out so there’s a track record there. Maybe all the Shazam acronyms have to have one that doesn’t fit right!
Isn't it fun when HW studios prohibit the use of trailer footage by professional product reviewers in what are basically ads for their products?
Not as funny as doing so weeks after said footage was used for a review like this.
I'll watch this a second time with blurred out preview captures before I watch the movie once if they're griping about reviewers using footage.
Was considering this too, given it was well reviewed here and I like Johnson as an actor a lot.
The classic flip and filter the footage with a frame around it. WB is just sad
I liked Pierce Bronson and all the Rock is so charismatic that all he really has to do any more is pose for the camera and vaguely gesture at things to "punch" them and it'll sell tickets. So yeah, not good but not God awful.
Commenting for the algorithm.
The closest thing to a positive review I've seen, and they did a copyright takedown? That's some BS.
Positive for the film, less so for the studio behind it. I suspect the latter as the real motive here, which is just petty.
Present-day Warner doesn't even know how to take a compliment. Backhanded, maybe, but if everyone else pans it, then backhanded is the best you can expect.
What’s fascinating is the number of normie reviewers who made more or less the same points as Bob since this review was first posted. Not discussing the movie itself, but the meta of the thing. Usually they avoid that stuff as if it were lava. I have not seen the word edgelord used in polite conversation in an age.
What's sad is that it does feel like there have been people in the trenches over at Warner Bros. and DC who could connect to a broad audience, but we're stuck with this septic Geoff Johns backwash that would have been novel/edgy in 2010 but is way, way past the sell-by date.
And I do think even normal reviewers smell that sepsis and are, for the first time in a long time, feeling able to voice that-- even via euphemism.
Proving our Mr. Chipman was ahead of the curve and this, despite the fact that he gave it a decent score, is also why the copyright strike is petty vengeance from Zaslav's goons for his call-out of their BS (or maybe BZ?).
They gave you a copyright takedown for just using trailer scenes? WTF
Copyright claim? Sheesh. Whatever. Another watch and like from me!
I offer now my very words to the great god Algo Rhythm!
You ever wonder what the Al Gore Rhythm sounds like?
@@BaronVonFisticuffs Zaslav trying to tell WB shareholders that everything is fine while the place burns around him comes to mind.
Those fools from WB are claiming videos again - nothing will teach them that it's no good for them, it seems.
"HOW MANY TIMES DO WE HAVE TO TEACH YOU THIS LESSON, OLD MAN!?"
I really liked Black Adam (and our disagreement is okay and we are civil humans lol)
Wow, what got DC's knickers in a twist?
Well, remember that this is the last of two films WBD is releasing this year. What's left of the year will be dominated by Disney by way of Wakanda Forever and the new Avatar sequel. They had ONE shot for a hit with Black Adam and it's only going to break even. Put all that together and this sort of petty revenge makes some sense.
Engagement for the engagement god!
Your reviews are good!
Warner Discovery seems very fragile lately. That's very sad.
This is the last film they're going to release this year. And it's only doing so-so numbers with zero legs. So it's less sad and more petty to me.
what are the chances the Troma guy will have any actual say in the direction these movies go and is not just a "name recognition hire to rubberstamp whatever the honey boo boo man says to do"?
Zero or close to it. I know a publicity stunt when I see one.
Interesting that the positive reviews I've seen phrased everything nicer but still ended with the same basic criticism and overall rating.
Probably because it's just "good enough" at a time when WBD needs a grand slam.
@@johnathonhaney8291 Well at least they had enough grand slams in the plane crash kinda way.

Nah, no sense punishing the film for having the bad luck to be attached to dysfunctional studio management.
dam takedowns... keep on doing your thing bob.
This movie is all over the place it feels like the whole thing is on break neck speed
I wish the Justice Society was a bit like the Bat family in that one episode of Harley Quinn. Where they are all milk toast "we can't kill people" one second with the zombies, but the moment it's revealed it's Poison Ivy controlling them they are all make a really fast heel turn like "We must make a exception and kill her dead!". Like Jesus Christ that escalated quickly! Also that felt like relevant parody of the state modern superheroes are in more than this "we don't kill ever".
But they're always killing people? Or at least they die and it's considered a win?
I didn't hate this movie, but I sure didn't love it. I was also never bored, so that's a plus. Sometimes just watching a display of super powers is enough. It felt very self indulgent on the Rock's part. But hey, it's been a passion project of his for like a decade, and he helped produce it. So I guess that's his prerogative. I actually found Hawkman and especially Doctor Fate far more compelling characters.
Judas Rocking Priest, how old is James Gunn? His hair's white already!
4:08 has The Boys moved away from that or has it and other superhero deconstructions are like fairytale deconstructions in which they're only one trick ponies?
Everything I've heard tells me it's the second. I've heard folks argue otherwise, how it's a parody of America and so on. But I'm not buying it in a world where Death Race 2000 still exists and remains a smarter version of that.
I feel like the only thing left to do with super hero deconstruction is to make a world where people have powers but aren't motivated to use them. Everything else has pretty much been done.
@@slyfer60 There actually is a GREAT story in Kurt Busiek's Astro City series that does just that, "On The Sidelines". It deals with people who just use their superpowers for everyday jobs and its protagonist is a frumpy, fiftyish telekinetic who uses her talents to do SFX and stunt work in Hollywood. You can find that story in the collection Private Lives.
So, WB's super whiny then? Oh no, reviewers are using trailer footage. How terrible.
"I'm a real boy!"
Sorry, just came to mind lol
WOOHOOO!!!
How dare you use clips released specifically to promote the movie in your review of the movie!
I don’t know anything about Black Adam. The previews didn’t catch my interest and Bob’s review just kind of sealed the deal re: my disinterest.
Same...I had a less severe reaction to the first trailer than the hell-screams I heard in my head over the one for WW84. But it was enough to tell me where we were headed.
@@johnathonhaney8291 I admit I’ve been ruined by streaming services. It takes a significant amount of excitement to get my jaded middle-aged ass to a movie theater. I’ve done a couple Marvel movies (mixed results), Dune, and EEAAO (which was phenomenal). Black Adam just ain’t doin’ it for me.
@@TrueYellowDart Eh, I'm the same, friend, right down to the age bracket. Marvel is the only thing that gets me in a theater these days (and I'm hardcore, so no disappointments for me there). But the rest can wait their turn. I got a century of film to wade through in the meantime by way of streaming services. Given how I had to hunt a lot of that down on VHS and DVD back in the day, I can stay occupied.
2:15 "Make no mistake. Black Adam is garbage"... 5:35 "6/10." So it's both garbage and above middling.
The Rock and Pierce Brosnan are apparently the only saving graces here, much like Timothy Olyphant and Dougray Scott were for the first Hitman movie. Good performances can keep a film like this from being a TOTAL waste.
It's garbage in the sense that we all know Domino's Pizza is garbage, yet we all still gobble it down (and kind of enjoy it) on nights when we just don't feel like cooking.

Okay, what is this bullshit? Mr. Chipman gave you a semi-good review and now that Black Adam is limping to break even status, you hit him with another copyright strike? Last time I saw this was with the WW84 review and we KNOW how that film turned out.

Still disagree with you on The Boys though.
They're stressing super hero media in the present which most super hero movies feel less like actual heroes who go out of there way to save people and more just like old Greek myth heroes who have cool powers and fight big monsters. Yes those monsters are always threatening innocent people but the focus is always the fight instead of them being heroic.
The Boys deconstructs super heroes as a pop cultural institution and how hero worship in the real world can empower celebrities and companies to be blatantly evil because we like the end results. Super hero media has changed a lot in the last ten years and I'm saying this as some one who likes all that media including the MCU popcorn flicks, the soap opera shows that DC keeps putting out, or the deconstructions.
Hell even Invincible is able to point out this issue in super hero media while still actively celebrating the genre. They show it takes a lot of skill, and training to be a proper hero. The old Guardians prioritized keeping people safe and all their team work is about distracting bad guys while they clear out areas of bystanders. The new Guardians are so inexperienced they think being a hero is just fighting super villains and their season arc ends with them being a first responder team that's just there to save people from broken buildings.
So yeah The Boys show is deconstructing a real version of the super hero genre. The version that's been developing for the last 10+ years in all other media besides the comics themselves
Sorry for the rant I'm about to drop on your head but I find that explanation hogwash. The very existence of Captain America Civil War puts the lie to that. The Boys is the Zack Snyder misunderstanding of superheroes at its nihilistic worst with all the lack of redeeming qualities that statement implies. The only animating philosophy I see behind it is a soul-killing "realism" brought to you by people whose grasp of the real should always be distrusted.
Highest paid actor in the world. Has literally never been in a truly great film. Not one single great movie.
Sadly, much as I admire the man, I have to agree.
If you are in the movie business, you can try to make a great movie (hard to do and might not be recognized for greatness in its time.). That's a losing bet even if you are a genius movie maker, which you probably are not... or you can throw money at Wayne Johnson to star your merely-okay movie that barely has any other reason to exist (requires no great decision-making and will almost certainly make some money, even after he gets paid.)
