    DJ Woo Pig, I appreciate you brother. You’re dropping real knowledge. There are so many UA-cam channels that just recommend generic prosumer gear. You are referencing some real affordable professional grade equipment that can grow with you. I recently purchased two ulx S4 for my wedding ceremony set up. My Shure glx and blx series were not cutting it for outdoor ceremonies. I also own an antenna combiner. I got the advise from a good friend that runs audio. You’re giving the type of advice you get from friends. Most UA-camrs are here to gain views and review crappy gear. Thanks for keeping it 💯.

    What I really like about your Pro Audio Series is you have really found the line of affordable Pro with out being complete garbage. There is a bunch of gear out there that will not perform in a pro environment, and I like how you acknowledge this. There will always be a better, more expensive kit, but your kit is very respectable, and will get the job done comfortably. Great Videos!

    It's funny, I grew up in a suburb of Chicago, and used to drive past the Shure plant or ride above it on the CTA train. Back then we didn't think much of the microphones made in out back yard, and lusted for the exotic condenser models from (then) West Germany and Austria. 40 years later who'd 'a thunk that the same SM57/SM58 models that were the unsung workhorses would still be the go-to mikes?
    I've gotten over my bigotry about stupid expensive condenser mikes from _der Vaterland_ with one exception. I like Sennheiser wireless systems, and some vocalists like the Neumann KMS 105 vocal performer microphone. It's great for wired applications, and Neumann make a KK 105-S capsule for the Sennheiser so it doesn't have to be an either/or situation. Even though Lectrosonics is now the company in my back yard, I have liked Sennheiser for wireless audio to the mixer and IEM/IFB for a while now. I've used Shure packs and like them well enough, but keep liking Sennheiser better.

    Another excellent video. I have been investing in mics for a little while now. All of my wired mics are Shure SM48. They don't sound too much different than the 58's, although they do need a little eq and a little more gain. I have 6 of those, and two (so far) of the Sennheiser XS Wireless 2 mics, (one is a 825, and the other is the 835). Mostly entry level stuff, but still professional. Those two are good brands that I trust, even with their entry level products. As I build my sound company, I will certainly upgrade, and even do like in the video, and have the "B" case, for my current mics. I think my next move will be to get a drum mic kit, and maybe even some SM57's.

    Little suggestion on mic security... Make sure your Mic cases have serious locks and buy a couple pairs of handcuffs from Peerless or Smith and Wesson and lock on cuff on the handle and another to something that can't move because you WILL get ripped off and lose everything in the case. I even lock them around my guitar necks and I have flush mounted D rings installed on my speaker cabinets just so I can lock that shit up when I leave the stage. While I live in rural Nebraska, you can be sure someone has an eye on your shit and they WILL jack yo shit.

    You didn't mention mic's for acoustic piano what you use, large diaphragm condensers like AKG or do just go with dynamic mic's? You mentioned the Shure Beta 58's do you have issues with them with vocalists. I find vocalists are horrible about how they hold mic's, they really bad as holding mic's like they holding an ice cream cone or they are moving the mic so much. That super cardiod pattern of the Beta 58 they really need to know how to work that mic or they off it's tight pattern compared to a regular 58. I won't go into singer with wireless mic's and they keep grabbing them by the antenna area and wonder why it cuts out. Dealing with singers such fun.

    • @DjWooPig
      @DjWooPig  5 років тому +2

      Toortog Pown correct, I would use a combination of a LDC and maybe a boundry mic. I don’t hand off a beta unless the talent is qualified.

    •  5 років тому +2

      Toortog Pown everything that you described is a sign of an inexperienced microphone technique. A seasoned pro can use the position of the microphone to modulate their voice. A rank amateur will try to emulate what they see, but when they don't know the why or how, it will fail horribly.
      The thing is, even the pros started knowing nothing, so they had to learn somehow. That's not to say that you owe every untalented singer a course in vocal pedagogy for microphones, but if they will take stage direction it can make everyone's life a little easier. Otherwise do what you need to do, including taping it to the stand.

    • @DojoOfCool
      @DojoOfCool 5 років тому +1

      @StringerNews1 The are pro's that still don't understand they focus more on where mic as if live was video shoot and mic hides their face. Or their stage moves are more important than proper mic tech. The artists these day know there are video camera everywhere and start think more about the visual than the audio. This is where headsets are good if they have their own that has been fitted to their head and face (some even skin tone) and the mic in it can handle their voice. I worked media for a large church with a very dynamic reverend who really used his dynamic range to draw people in from speaking in whispers to the full power of his speaking voice. Trouble was when he went loud he overloaded the headset mic. We finally had to spend the money and get him a DPA headset mic because it handles the highest SPL for headset mics. Funny the only issue with this rev what he was married to a great singer, the church music was a big part of services, and the rev would start singing alone and he was terrible. So we had to nicely duck down his mic in fact we had to ride his channel on the board when he delivered his message because of his big dynamic range he drop too low and we have to bring it up. It sounded better to ride his channel than to compress it and kill his dynamics.

    •  5 років тому

      @Toortog Pown television isn't exactly new, and performers who appear on TV regularly know to work with the TV director to get the best shot angles. Perhaps in some genres of music, all that's required is visual looks, but that's not the sound contractor's problem. When anyone tries to make a living trying to sell what they think is talent, it's 100% on them to make it work.
      If a singer/dancer or any other performer wants to use a headset, that's fine. But because of the custom and personal nature of such devices (this goes for IEM as well), it's not reasonable to expect hire companies to rent such equipment to them in each city. So if they want to use them, they need to get their own, and make sure that what they have hooks up to 3rd party wireless packs without any problems. They also need to be smart enough (or have someone who is) to make a backup plan or two in case the headset fails. If you bring your own PA, you should have a lot of redundancy already; if you you hire the PA, don't expect that sort of redundancy to come for free or without asking.

      Just go with regular 58s when dealing with unseasoned artists. Sure you can get a better sound out of the betas, but it's never worth it when you're sitting there breaking a cold sweat cause the GBF is taken on a rollercoaster ride

    • @JDCProduktion
      @JDCProduktion 5 років тому

      harrigl Nola a “rider” is a technical sheet, that a band would often have if they are playing at stages where they don’t bring their own gear. So if you are supplying gear and you have 4 bands playing, they will hand in a “rider” to let you know witch mics they need, what kind of power they need, monitors, placement on the stage etc.
      it’s really great if you are doing quick shifts between bands. Often there will also be a channel overview and monitor requests :-) hope that was helpful :-)

    • @jimstanley_49
      @jimstanley_49 5 років тому

      I believe it's called that because it "rides" along with the standard performance contract. What Christian Albertsen said is correct, but it can get very lengthy and precise. Like, bands will specify that they must be mixed on a Midas or Soundcraft console, or that Behringer and Peavey speakers and amps are verboten, and even what snacks are to be provided backstage.
      Van Halen famously included a bowl of M&Ms with all the brown ones picked out on their rider. Apparently, they had some bad experiences with trying to put on a gigantic show in venues that weren't used to the massive scope of the production. All of the technical requirements were carefully spelled out in the rider. They knew that if they didn't see brown M&Ms, they could trust that all the other details had been taken care of. If there were brown M&Ms, well, possibly the stage would sink through the arena floor because they ignored the weight requirements, or they would overload the venue electrical because they had skimmed the power requirements. It was a reason to do a full line check at best, and a cancelation of the event (with no notice and probably some band-inflicted damage to the dressing room) at worst.
