  • This is LivingPianos.com, I'm Robert Estrin. Today's subject is about the importance of rotation when playing arpeggios. What makes arpeggios so difficult? Even compared to scales, which have third and fourth finger crossings, as well as thumb crossings, arpeggios can be even more difficult. This is because your thumb and your third finger have to cross so far over, it makes it difficult. The way to practice this is to have the metronome set at a slow speed. Practice preparing your thumb as early as possible, which means right when the second finger plays, the thumb tucks under.

Thank you! I just started piano a week or two ago. I got my sheet music for Mozart piano sonata 16 in C major. I am starting with the first movement and I didn’t know about the tucking the thumb early or turning the wrists. There was definitely a pause when I transitioned. Thanks again!!!

Thank you for this, Robert! I am just starting to learn Chopin's Waltz No. 19 in A minor B150 (posth.), and the arpeggio in measure 21 has larger jumps than I have played before. Your very clear instruction should help me work my way up to the appropriate and smooth speed. Many thanks!

Yeah this is essentially what I've been doing for the final arpeggio's on the last mvt of the Beethoven Pastorale. It's still insanely hard to connect it all with the proper loudness and speed, but pracitce makes perfect

Artrithis can be a real pain with thumbs under. But Íts easier and less painful if you rotade the hand. Maybe a video about (not artrithis of course) ergonomical use in scales, aprpeggio and thumb crossing everywhere.
