  • SCOTT PILGRIM TAKES OFF is here! This is a new adaptation of the Scott Pilgrim graphic novels by Bryan Lee O’Malley from ScienceSaru, the same animation studio that gave us Devilman Crybaby, Adventure Time, and an episode of the excellent Star Wars Visions. But this isn’t the first time these comics have been adapted.

It's kind of amazing that Netflix commissioned the series even after the movie adaptation suck at the box office. I loved it. Saw it 7 times at the cinema and dozens more since. Going into the series I didn't think it'd have anything left for me to see. I was very wrong. The first episode had me a little worried but then it did it' own thing and I watched every episode in one sitting. Brilliant.

@@Koichi-Kun the point of the comic was the same general premise as the show. Except the writing was better, the pacing was good, all the characters are three dimensions except the exes. The shows pacing is to fast, at best only solid development you get is from Ramona, everyone else is one dimensional, on top of everything else the dialogue comes off as if this was teen titans go, and to make it worse most of the characters don't even sound like that want to be there, a person says the line, a few seconds go by then a character responds, a flowing conversation isn't that formulaic. To top it off the writing makes zero sense, why would Ramona go on a hunt for a dude she went on a single date with, why did we get future Scott will almost build up to it, if Scott is the thing driving Ramona how come all of his friends and family flat out forget he ever existed after the kidnaping heck in the comic you learn Wallace has been friends with him since high school, the intro just makes no sense character wise regardless how much of a much Scott is.

    • @dmcoub78
      @dmcoub78 7 місяців тому +1

@@Koichi-Kun it's not that I'm mad, I'm just disappointed. The level of quality in the show doesn't come anywhere near the comic. Why would you praise someone for doing a shit job, when back in the 2010s they showed they can do better. If you want good art, you need to stop simping for creators when they screw up, that's how we ended up with a proper design in the live action sonic movie, people were honest about how the first design was trash.

All that stuff STILL happened in the comics. Scott has always been kind of dopey. And we know he is TERRIBLE at break ups. Ramona is bad with communication. He thought the space she needed was a divorce. So his dumbass BECAME a evil ex. It's hilarious and poetic. It's a sweet ass semi-sequel. The evil exes were 1 dimensional jerks, and Ramona was always sort of a bitch to them growing up. This is a really cool way to promote growth and show depth of all the characters and give them room to be humans. Instead of pissed off people who get murdered. I thought it was a super rad addition to the lore. I love that the creator did this.

I just watched it this weekend and I had a blast ! I actually discovered the previous Scott Pilgrim's medias jumbled, I first discovered it from the movie, then the game, then only got curious to read the comics.
And I got to say, this anime series is truly enjoyable when you know of all the previous iterations of Scott, be it Comics, movie and game, as it is a combination of all their strength blended together (Bryan's comic style, mixed with Edgar Wright's zaniness style in the directing, and Anamanaguchi, the band that made the iconic music of the game, back at the music of the anime, as well as the game being the first medium to have animated the comics, with the inimitable pixel art style of pixel art king Paul Robertson, which Science Saru studio did an awesome job at emulating).
It's a remarquable remake/sequel of sorts that revisits what would have happened to the cast in a "what if Scott "died" at the first boss scenario ?" It's basically pulling a FF7 Remake to the Scott Pilgrim storyline, and I loved it !
A few easter eggs and cameos you missed :
    - Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, famously made famous through Edgar Wright's Cornetto trilogy, are making 2 cameo in the series, as the security guards of the filmmaking studio (in one shot, you can even see them holding cornettos in their hands, which was a hilarious move),
    - Weird Al Yankovic did the opening monologue for the "documentary" episode
    - like the movie, the series features 3 live-action superheroes in Brandon Routh (Superman), Chris Evans (Captain America) and Brie Larson (Captain Marvel). Except, unlike in the movie, they're now full grown superstars, thanks to their roles (and it's pretty wild they all accepted to come back to dub the series).
    - talking about Captain America, the epilogue kinda makes a meta joke when Stacey, talking about working at the cafe with Lucas Lee, gossips on the phone "I get to look at his butt all day", which is obviously a nod to Cap's famous lines"I can do this all day" and "This is America's ass".
Other than that, there's a passive well of deep cuts about the game and the entire anime industry and history that are littered all throughout the series, but these are very specific to game and anime nerdom, so I won't necessarily talk about them here.
All in all, it's wild that 20 years later, and 13 years after the movie, the comic's author Bryan Lee O'Malley still finds new stories to bring to the table with this rogue gallery of lovely goofballs and emotional jerks, and I love it that you feel he matured with them, bringing them back to life once again through an even better story that gives everyone their moment to shine, and brings actual closure to a lot of them.
As much as I love this show, I don't necessarily think a season 2 would be necessary, as I feel like the book is now closed, and it was done in a beautiful way.
But who knows, maybe in another 10 years...?

If you think about it, this show acts as the perfect sequel to the movie.
While they do keep it vague enough for it to be a potential sequel to either the movie or the original comic, Scott never really has to face Nega Scott in the film. Sure, he is there, but their fight is basically boiled down to a joke with Scott saying "Oh yeah, he's actually a really nice guy." And then Scott is still shown to have not fully learned his lesson by hiding his hair with a hat when Knives tries to compliment it.
In a way, this show is basically Scott's Nega Scott arc from the comic, just adapted in a way that let's them potentially make a continuous if they choose to.

As a primarily anime fan, this series introduced me to this world and now, looking back, I regret not getting into it sooner. After binge watching the series, I immediately watched the 2010 movie and surprisingly enjoyed it, despite personally having somewhat of a negative opinion on live action adaptations of LN/manga/comics, especially ones that heavily feature absurdly unrealistic fight sequences that normally only work in animation.
I think Netflix really has something special on their hands here... even akin to TV franchises that have grown their own fandoms such as Rick and Morty. I don't know how sustainable it is for them, though, especially considering the actors and actresses involved in voicing the characters in this series alone. But if they manage to build upon the foundations from this series, they can maybe start to create anime-original stories based on the Scott Pilgrim universe in the future.

I loved it, but I am not sure if it needs a second season. The graphic novels, movie and show come together to create this "whole" that feels like it has finally delivered it's message, right now I think the franchise it's at the point where adding more is more likely to cause more harm than good.
On the other hand, I feel like both the movies and the show did not explored the characters of Kim Pine and Envy Adams enough and they completely cut Lisa Miller, so maybe there is still some room for more stories.

Really loved it. Was pleasantly surprised when the story diverged from the original story, and it honestly made me enjoy the series a bit more. Having the show follow the characters on an original, unique story allowed the fans to be able to explore and learn more about the characters, and I personally appreciated seeing how the characters interacted with each other.
It's not a direct adaptation from the books, nor does it follow up the movie, but that honestly was a great decision: to expand on the lore and universe in a unique way rather than retread the same story. I know some would have preferred that it was a 1:1 adaptation of the book (because the book series was AMAZING), but honestly once you get over that, it becomes a genuinely well-written, visually appealing and enjoyable expansion to the Scott Pilgrim lore, that truly feels like the writers nailed the humor, pacing and visual storytelling of both the book and the movie and even the videogame.
Personally, with me having wanted more from the Scott Pilgrim franchise and story, it makes me hope and wish that more people will watch it, give it a chance and rate it highly, so we can get a few more seasons before Netflix inevitably cancels it solely for being another animated project. 😑

They were the first time I saw queer relationships portrayed ever, and probably where I learned about bisexuality in the first place it gave me the words to describe the feelings I had. And for the time it was so good, is still good! No drama bout coming out or homophobia, just relationships, messy and otherwise, like everyone else. I’m delighted by this adaptation and desperately want more.

I think the ending misses the mark by having even older Scott verbalize her faults in a hate filled rant rather than have young Romona address it to even older Ramona. Like we get the flashbacks, and then she fuses with her, but it all kinda just sits there, as if the pieces to a very simple puzzle were layed out on the table but they refused to finish it.
If Scott had just responded to her saying "I just needed some space" with "what do you think I was doing for 10 years" and between those statements Ramona had that realization that would've worked better, because when Scott says she's just running away, it's an excuse where he's denying all his faults and blaming everyone else, like we saw him do multiple times before.
She had 10 years to reconnect with him, to say anything to him, she knew where his head was but chose to avoid the problem. She was absolutely running away, but you can't have even older scott say that because that's just him running away, it's meaningless, if not less than meaningless, actively draining meaning from everything around it.

I loved how each episode opened with Ramona changing her hair but all that bleaching and colour is going to destroy her hair. She should really take a few days off every so often or her hair will become brittle and that's the last thing she needs.

Well, it's an anime, coming from a comics with time travel, subspace highway in people's heads, and gigantic hammers coming out from an interdimensional purse, so I don't think hair physics and chemistry apply, in this world.

Ok beyond Gideon and Julie's Plot to destroy Scott and Ramona's relationship ? Lisa Miller should also return to be Ramona's true rival fighting for Scott. Playing this angle Ramona is Scott's True Love / Dream Girl but she might not be a perfect fit but she's willing to fight for Scott and make things work. Lisa Miller is Scott'sBest Friend / Soul Mate* who's finally ready to claim him or challenge Ramona for Scott's Love , Lisa Miller and Scott have a shared history alot in common and she might be a better Match ? But maybe it's for a selfish reason ?
Ramona and Lisa's fight needs to feel like a ticking time bomb slowly building to exploding maybe Lisa is Jealous of Ramona's relationship w/ Scott but Ramona is Jealous of Lisa's strong connection to Scott and sees that maybe Lisa is a better Match ?

I love the comment sections of ScreenCrush videos, because the Reddit comments about this series was very toxic.
I enjoyed this show, and appreciated it wasn’t just a recreation of the original comic, although I think we would all appreciate that at some point…

I have a lot of mixed thoughts on this show.
    1) I loved the movie and so episode 1 was a huge let down. All the things that worked well in the movie felt flat in the show, because the live action felt more than real, but in animation they needed to amp it up more to make it kick as hard but went backwards. I love Wallace but until later in the show I never laughed. They just didnt have the right pacing or feel and it was all the same thing but less.
    2) The twist was not expected and calling the show "Takes Off" didnt make that clear, nor did the trailer. Maybe if they called it something like "New Game+" that would have helped clear thins up. The other issue with the twist is that episode 2 just didnt seem to really move anywhere, and it took until episodes 3-4 for me to really get invested into the new plot.
    3) The mid/later episodes were great. The movie in the show about the movie, Wallace having his fun with other people's boyfriends, more depth to all the characters. it finally started working.
    4) The out of focus style was annoying to watch and I wish they just went with a standard soft blur. The music was much more passive in this vs the movie too. The fight scenes were a let down compared to what the movie did with live-action. So basically all the things they had control over was a little weaker than it should have been.
    5) Plot stuff was decent enough. Future Scott stuff was meh, why is he always bad at relationships no matter how old he gets? You'd think being married to the girl of your dreams that puts up with all your flaws would eventually give him the confidence to grow up and work on his problems rather than running and fighting.
Overall I think its a fine show, but not incredible. I think a lot of this can be fixed in future seasons since the concept and characters are fine, its just a matter of using the medium properly and having a good script and getting the pacing right.

Lisa did not appear in the movie or in the anime. This is very much the only way they can make a compelling season 2 while still having amazing character growth and stakes.
Btw: Lisa Miller was a character from Scott's early life that resurfaces later in the comic. She is kind of obsessed with him and he is digging the attention since Ramona is more... let's say independent. He nearly cheats on Ramona with Lisa and it will always be one the most complex moment in the story.

I was a little thrown by Wallace in the series. Maybe it's because I was a bit further removed from the humanity since it was animated but I thought he crossed the line a little by not being upfront with Todd. He set things in motion he knew would end badly for Todd but never told him it was just an on set fling. That didn't need to happen. Yes I'm definitely taking this way too seriously. It's just how I felt while watching.

That's what made him funny in the series. He always was aloof and detached in all previous versions, so it'd make sense that he'd be the same here. The only person he kinda cared for before was Scott, so it would make sense he didn't care for Todd as much.

I loved the show, but I do feel like they kinda rushed Ramona's growth. Like, it's her show! She is the main character. In a way, Future-Scott is the way that he his because future-Ramona pulled the same s**t she pulled on all her exes. She accuses him of not contacting her in 10 years, but that implies she didn't try to contact him in 10 years either, and he thought they were broken up; what's her excuse, y'know?
And so, yeah, Ramona comes to the realization that she has to stop doing that, but it just comes so quickly considered she's supposed to be the main character. I think maybe they should have added a little bit more depth, maybe a fight with some kind of nega-Ramona character, something? Because the way they did it here, it felt a bit empty.
I don't want to be a downer; I really loved the show! I'm just saying the main character (which in this case was Ramona) could have used more character development. On the other hand, the exes got a lot of it, so I like that! :)

But noticed that this series animated just looks better. And when i watched this i loved all the characters even the side characters. I will watch the live action now tho and hoping a 2nd season comes
