Bowsette was one of the most controversial Mario characters of all time, even though she wasn't real....or was she? In this video we examine the real reasons why Bowsette got so popular, why Nintendo desperately wants you to forget she existed, and try to uncover the alleged "real" version of the character...was she an actual thing?

It should be noted Nintendo's "no comment" isn't unique to Bowsette. It is their standard response for all fan created content, especially that on the Internet. Their stance basically is they have no control and don't wish to interact or make any official stances on anything created by fans of their products. (although some studios clearly do take notice and later installments of some games raise eyebrows, they will never confess to*.

I posted a link to an article about Nintendo responding to fan created content, and remarking how its not unique to Nintendo, most companies like this will take a stance of not remarking on fan art or fanfiction, and some even have the stance of telling writers *DC or Marvel stated this* of not reading unsolicited fan fiction to avoid any legal troubles as plot lines even if not characters can get a copyright claim.

There was also a point to where Nintendo specifically said that the Super Crown only works on Toadette in their attempts to stop the Bowsette and other possible popular characters, aka Boosette to exist.
Bowsette is a fan favorite because she is a bad girl version of peach. Like villian deku the bad boy version of the Mc of hero macadamia. Quirkless villian deku still scares me he is so evil. Or the female villian deku giving weird feelings to Bakugou. It is the change to the relationship Dynamic that's interesting.
However, if the Super Crown works on one mushroom character, it could work on another mushroom character. Goombas are mushrooms, and so are Shroobs...

Not going to lie, bowsette was one of the few actually fun “events” I remember happening in that time period of the internet. She’s not even my thing, it’s just seeing people all have a load of fun with the concept, right down to the mini-comics with backstories.

Funny enough she’s so popular that I don’t think she’s going away for a very long time. She will still mildly popular as far as fan art goes even 4 or 5 years after her creation (and in not just talking about the recent resurgence due to the song). I know that they never would, but they should just make her a stand alone princess (granted they want to make her outfit more PG) in a game just like Peach, Daisy, and Rosalina. They could even drop the super crown bowser-shtick and market her as the “Koopa Princess” or something to that effect (grasping at straw here I know). Maybe even give her the dark skin, red skin design to differentiate her from the previous three. I get that she’s a fan design, but Nintendo would make so much more money in merch etc if they did this.

I saw a crossdresser Bowserte approximately at the same time. So year is was a fun time
I once saw two women cosplaying as the two different main depictions of Bowsette (Fair Skin, blonde hair and Tanned Skin Red hair) at Dragon*Con one year.
Gonna see if I can spot any Bowsette cosplays this year.
Cosplayers work fast. The fastest turn around time I've seen of a meme into a reality was 4 days. I'm a Princess Daisy Cosplayer and one of my best friends is a Peach Cosplayer. We do a different version of Peach and Daisy at pretty much every con we go to. If a Peach or Daisy meme ever happen again we could probably pull together costumes for it in a few days. It helps that I have racks of cosplays that I will never wear again and can use for parts. I remember back when I was in high school when cosplay was so niche and I wanted to cosplay Princess Peach and I found instructions on making the cosplay by using 4 different dress patterns and getting the wig styled at a department store. These days I could order a Peach Dress on Amazon and it would arrive in 2 days. And finding wigs that don't need styling has gotten a lot easier. My best friend has two Peach wigs, both of which only needed minimal styling and both were bought less than a week before the respective cons.
Technically speaking humanized and gender swapped versions of Bowser already existed in fan art, as well as one video game where he is possessed and the old anime movie for one moment when he transforms; neither could be considered attractive of course; and Nintendo clearly has someone who wanted to do this in a main title game in some way. As well as "wicked" versions of Princess Peach. The super crown though just opened that floor door as fan artists love the idea of "this could be canon" as a big checkered flag of "go for it".
Yeah, but he wasn't depicted as a trans. Most of the Bowsette fanart was of him being dad and mom to Jr. or of Bowsette X Mario/Peach.
Nintendo didn't like that.
So they made their own version of Bowsette, which was him possessing a woman like Mario posseses everyone in Odyssey... that's not better.
They created their version of Bowsette hoping it would kill the original, but all it did was hive her a little sister or rival... or both depending on how you look at it.
@@TheHeartlessHero It was part of the concept art for Odyssey but didn't make it in game. Also pretty sure it actually predates Bowsette by a fair bit.
So no, it wasn't created to try to kill Bowsette, it was just coincidence that they breifly somewhat hiveminded there on similar concepts (possessing Targets vs upgrading "monster" humanoid to a human one).

I love the idea that Nintendo brought this upon themselves by writing an inexplicably shitty ending to Odyssey (which is a great game just…you guys asked for it!).
People just flipped their status quo and they didnt know how to react.
It's not that she said "no", it's that she literally was about to steal Mario's ride and leave him stranded on the moon, and the little hat ghosts were completely okay with it
And "writing" such a peculiar power-up that seriously questions the nature of toads and Peach.

They should have used Daisy or Rosalina if they wanted a princess. Toadette was a fun addition until I had the super crown.

I dont see toadette being a separate character, simply just a reverted Peach. I'd assume Peach used to be a toad at one point due to her name and also how shes the princess/ruler of the mushroom kingdom dispite being a human herself, that's because shes not human. Shes only under a spell to look human, or because that's what a princess toad looks like when they become princess or adult

I'm semi-sure it has been the lore for decades that Princess Peach Toadstool was simply adopted into the Mushroom Kingdom by the Toads, possibly even to the extent that there was no royal family prior to them making it all up for her. It's all a bit muddy, though. Lot's of conflicting info over the years. ...Did end up being the way they went with the Movie lore, at the least, but that certainly wasn't the first time they leaned towards the concept.

My favorite part about Bowsette is that she almost was official, I mean for real Life official, in the art book for mario odysey, there´s a peculiar ilustration, and it's because at some point of the development for the story of the game Bowser with a hat like Cappy, possessed Peach, and we almost had the "real" Bowsette, it's not the same design but, It was a female human Bowser that looked a lot like Peach
Most likely wouldn't be called "Bowsette" because Bowser doesn't have an 'Ette' in his name. Someone suggested Peacher which makes a lot more sense in my opinion.

I think the meanest thing is that they actually made a comment eluding to the Bowsette situation in the official description of the Super Crown.
Of course they targeted Luigi because they can never just leave the poor man alone but it specifically talks about how Toadette is the only possible user.
That doesn't really debunk anything TBH. They did say that only Toadette can use the Super Crown in NSMBUDX, but no statement about whether the others are physically not able to or simply choose not to for some deep lore reason.

It's Princess Peach's crown combined with Toadette's mushroom cap. It's made for Toadette, and only Toadette. Not Bowser, not Goomba, not King Boo, only Toadette.

Even if the fans and the Internet asked Nintendo to make that character official, the answer would be a resounding No! Because they have always been quite strict when it comes to their characters, especially those from Super Mario.

Bowsette is definitely still popular enough to warrant even a Mario Strikers appearance Despite not being as popular as she was before, she's still a fan- favorite. Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if she made it into Mario Kart 9 someday, considering there are mods for that as well.

8:16 Imagine if the Super Crown was made into a power-up in Smash Ultimate. Then (almost) any character could transform into their own Peach hybrid and gain her horizontal floating ability for a limited time, while still retaining their own moves. Although, the Super Leaf already serves the same function, so the Super Crown probably wouldn't bring anything new to Smash Bros., gameplay wise.🤔👑
This could be interesting from a design stand point. Not so much for the Artists though...
What I don't like about Bowsette is the bad naming. Like its a combination of peach and bowser, BUT THE NAME IS A COMBINATION OF BOWSER AND TOADETTE

Since Ette is also a suffix used to form nouns meaning the female equivalent of. Which makes Peachette sound weird and redundant.
I personally thought they could use the Bowsette image to give reasoning as to why Bowser keeps kidnapping peach and why Bowser Jr. keeps saying peach is his mom.
The real horned peach "Bowsette" could have been seen escaping the castle and Bowser is now set on getting her back.
She could have been a brainwashed "Toadette" or whatever where Kamik used his magic to transform her into the image of Bowsette and that's how Bowser got children.
Magic wore off i guess and she pretended to still be under control until she escaped.
Easy type of explanation as to why there's a Peach look-alike that has horns, but isn't actually Bowser.
Bowser tells Bowser Jr. at the end of Super Mario Sunshine that he lied to Jr. about Peach being Jr.'s mother. Looks to me that Bowser wants Peach to be a surrogate mother to his son and adopted Koopalings, I like to think.

My favorite thing about the whole Bowsette Strom was the alternate forms of the Mario enemies. It also brought up the question of how the Mario universe works. If Peach is the "ruler" of all toads, then who is the ruler of all Goombas, Boos, and even Chain-chomps? Fan art of Goombette (Princess Goomba), Boosette, and even Chain Compette show the possibilities of new characters. Yes, we already have characters like King Goomba, King Boo, and King Bob-Omb, but do you really think these old timers will sell merchandise?
Let Toadette be the only one who can turn into Peach, you only want anyone else to be Peach to exaggerated the ch3sts

1. It may be true that Boosette and Chain Chompette may have a "plus size figure," but their designs are different from Peach's.
2. Also, not all transformations are "plus sized." Goombette (Princess Goomba) looks like a loli tsundere.

Fun fact; there was a scrapped idea for Super Mario Odyssey where Bowser had his own, evil Cappy, and used it on Peach for the final boss battle, making her hair turn read, giving her fangs, and other effects.

One thing people tend to forget is that bowsette didn't start as a sexualized character. It was just a silly, dumb, and somewhat wholesome meme depending on who you ask (ignoring the fact that it's bowser without the crown lol). But it didn't start as just a sexier version of peach, it was a bad girl twist of peach with unique traits and powers as the video here said. And for a meme shit post character there was a lot of appeal in her design and everything else I just mentioned. Has the meme become more sexual overtime? Yeah, definitely. Everything on the internet at some point will have content like that which is why rule 34 is a thing (the actual rule, not just the website). I have seen a lot of funny, wholesome stuff that's come from the meme too, so I don't like it when people act like even now the only reason the character was ever popular was because of sex appeal. It's definitely a large part but to act as if that's the only reason the meme caught on fire is just a lie.
TLDR being that bowsette got popular for more than just r34 and generalization of anything be bad.
What doesn't help people disassociate bowsette from rule 34 stuff is that when you look her up you are very much bound to find lewd art or just straight up hentai without trying similar to the case with the my little pony characters

Bowsette is a character that'll be hard to forget, both for Nintendo fans and people with a specific type of "taste"
Considering how somewhat meme-ish Mario + Rabbids is, I wouldn't be surprised if Bowsette is referenced in the sequel, since Bowser is a playable character.
I'm pretty sure the Super Crown only works on Toadette because she's next in line for the throne. Maybe Peach came from a similar transformation.

Ok, I need to say this: I really can't belived so many people think Edge is Bowsette (WHICH SHOULD STILL BE CALLED PEACHER BTW). Seriously, I remember when Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope was first annouced and when was Edge was introducced, everyone was like "It's Bowsette! Ubisoft does listen to the fans! "OMG! Bowsette is canon! "Does this mean Bowsette is an official character?!" Like Number 1) Edge has different hair color and outfit, so it's not Bowsette. Number 2) She lacks the horns, shell and tail, so Edge isen't based on Bowser. My favorite version of the story goes that Bowser ate a Twice Cherry to clone himself, and the clone used the crown to make Bowsette. Something with the crown prevented the twice cherry from coming undone and basically Bowsette is permanent.
There were also quite a few fan arts that kept bowsette with Bowsers hair color instead of peaches, basically keeping the design the same but having red hair instead of blond. And I really prefer that version.
As someone who cosplayed bowsette 3 years after the hype i was honestly shocked how excited people got from seeing my outfit

Bowsette isn't Bowser with the crown but is actually Bowser Jr's mother who left them which would explain why Bowser always is trying to kidnap princess peach because he thinks she's his wife
I like the better theory that Bowser wants Peach so he can have a more complete family of sorts for Bowser Jr. and the adopted Koopalings. Plus he's a conquerer, he would annex Mushroom Kingdom if he successfully makes Peach his own.

Bear in mind that if they were to make the character official, they couldn't use the current popular design since it's not something they made. I mean... they could... but they'd be accused of stealing a fan design... but buying it from the artist is also kinda weird since it's a fanart of a character the artist doesn't really own... so Nintendo doesn't really have a way to not get any hate if they do. People are gonna be pissed it's not the popular design, and they will be pissed if they use it without contacting the artist, but the artist doesn't really have a right to the character design... so it's basically dead in the water PR-wise.
Just something I was thinking about while watching this video. Dunno if anyone would have more insight into the situation, but I don't see a way where making her official would be a seamless transition.
Now that you mention it, the only possible way I see it happening to if they used the concept they originally had for oddesy, but also giving a better name (because the only reason it's peachette is based on toadETTE's name) and also have to change the clothes and probably the figure too.
Part of me likes to believe Bowsette's popularity also stemed from the fact it was something fresh for fans after seeing the same reused characters over and over again. Sure the games themelves were usually good but there's really only so many times a person can see the same characters and such before getting sick of them, espeicaly in the "New Super Mario" games.
So to see something like Bowsette, it was quite refreshing. I doubt we'll ever forget Bowsette, she made too much of an impact to forget. The fact she's even being talked about at all to this day shows just how much staying power Bowsette has had as a whole.

If Nintendo was smart, they would make Bowsette a real, official character. What they should do is have her be the main antagonist in a future game. In said game, they should have princess Peach throw some big party, or have there be some sort of celebration that everyone's invited to, including Bowser and Bowser jr. under the condition that they behave and not try to kidnap peach again. Then have Bowsette crash the party and instead of kidnapping Peach, she kidnaps Mario. So throughout the game, instead of playing as Mario, you play as Luigi, Bowser, Bowser jr. and possibly peach as well and your able to switch between characters just like in super paper mario. It could be explained by Bowser throughout the game that Bowsette was once his wife and she is Bowser jr.'s real mother. She eventually walked out on Bowser, becoming his ex-wife. Bowser would have thought at the time that she was his true love, which would explain why now he's so obsessed with kidnapping Peach. And given that Peach is the spitting image of her, he hoped that because Bowser jr. was really young when she left that Bowser jr. wouldn't remember Bowsette, sparing him pain. Throughout the game, in cut scenes between the playable levels, they could show how Bowsette keeps trying to break down Mario's will, slowly whittling it down. Towards the end of the game, some time before the final fight, Bowsette would make Mario watch as her minions attack the group and it would appear as if both Peach and Luigi were killed. Bowsette would use that to fully break Mario's will and she would manipulate him into being loyal to her since he no longer has anything to loose. The final fight would not be the gang fighting Bowsette, but instead would be them fighting a brainwashed Mario. The fight would happen like normal and appear for a moment as if the player won, but then would have Mario turn it around and defeat everyone, making everyone retreat. Bowsette would be free to begin her conquest of the Mushroom kingdom and beyond. The gang would return to peach's castle to regroup where they would be greeted by Toadsworth. He would ask them what happened and where's Mario. They would tell him that they failed, that mario is lost. At which point the game would end shortly after. This would lead into a sequel where the gang has to find a way to rescue Mario, and figure out how to stop Bowsette, all while on the run from her minions.

I always knew that Bowsette is just a fan character, but Nintendo is missing another opportunity to make more money by disconfirming her. We talking about Western concept that so popular, that it became number one in the Mario franchise’s home country. They wasting a perfectly good character. If there was meme character that promotes the franchise I created like Bowsette did, than canonized that character no questions asked. Weather the character is fan-made or an in-joke. The only reason Nintendo disconfirmed Bowsette, is because Nintendo generally hate everything fans create. No matter how passionate and/or faithful they are. None of this surprising given their track record of shutting fan projects. The Nintendo company is still out of touch and do not understand that the fans is just giving them free advertisement. They do not know any better. I will not the same mistakes as this company and will take advantage a fan creation’s popularity by canonizing said creation myself.

Nah, they did so because of their "family friendly" reputation. Canonizing a character like Bowsette would torpedo said reputation quite fast. And you might think that's not so bad, but there would be a lot of angry parents writting to Nintendo telling them to drop Bowsette and that would be terrible for their PR.

It can just be Bowsette black gown, following the rule of glamorous just like Princess Peach. You play as her breathing fire on your enemies. You can use innovation to put a feminine spin on Bowsers abilities and combine it with some peach's moves. Just like the fan games shown in the video 13:00-13:06. Haniwa's comic, which Bowsette debuted in, does not have anything in it that makes her "inappropriate for KIDS". Keeping Bowsette family-friendly is not hard.

Simple, the thousands of H-based fanarts that already exist. Believe it or not a lot of parents wouldn't think twice and would blame Nintendo for these pictures even existing, ergo, Nintendo's "family friendly" reputation would enter into serious scrutiny. They could even lose sales thanks to those parents not wanting to buy games from Nintendo because, in their eyes, Nintendo isn't "family friendly".
if where talking about being forced in multiplayer then i have to disagree because
1) you get 100 seconds extra which in 4 people multiplayer is helpful for everyone
2) the crown power-up is practically the accorn power-up
3) Toadette really doesn't make the game easier despite the game saying so

If the princess crown only works for female members of the Toad species, then it stands to reason that Bowsette is actually a female Goomba who got hold of a princess crown. (Since Goombas are canonically Toads who betrayed The Mushroom Kingdom to side with Bowser)

After all these years, fans still haven't realized that Bowsette's name is incorrect, because "-ette" in the end comes from Toadette, and Bowsette has nothing to do with her. If Bowsette was supposed to be a combination of Bowser and Peach, then she should instead be called "Peacher" or "Bowch" (probably the former).

I remember as well either it was on a manual, the SMBDU website, or Nintendo post about the Super Crown, they stated once more that only Toadette can use it and they are sorry Luigi won't be able to wear it. At least they acknowledge about potential characters, but still enforce the family friendly nature. No crossdressing or genderbending.
