  • 5 min preview of class on Nov 2, 2019. Class will cover different propagation techniques, pest & disease management, thinning, mulching, fertilizing, cooking & recipes, & storage & preservation techniques. Bananas cooked green are like a potato, starchy and not sweet, a great easy to grow long lived "tree potato". Note, at 3 min in the video when I mentioned "nematodes" I meant to say "corm weevil" or "corm borer." Inspect corm and root ball well for damage and to ensure that the new start is free from corm borer. Starting with healthy plant material is crucial. make sure you are familiar with banana bunchy top virus before digging or transporting any banana starts!

    I’d like to hear more on the topics covered in the class. I am in Puerto Rico so we have extremely similar staples and climate

      The coquis got to Hawaii hidden on boats and agriculture from Puerto Rico when Boricuas went to Hawaii to work in the sugar cane fields.

    Green bananas n plantains are much more starchy than a potato. Breadfruit is more like a potato.

      As far as usage is concerned in my experience I have substituted green bananas for irish potatoes in a vast array of recipes quite successfully. Green banana potato salad, homefries, french fries, in soup or stew, mashed, fritters, in place of pasta, etc. (I make all the same with breadfruit) Different varieties of banana, and of course different ripeness levels, have vastly different textures, flavors, etc. My favorite banana for cooking is actually dwarf cavendish because of it cooks quickly, is more moist, and texture and taste very similar to irish potato. I boil in peel with ends cut off and some oil in the water. Green bananas are high in "resistant starch" which is supposed to help feed a healthy gut biome.

    • @Jahmastasunherbalist
      @Jahmastasunherbalist 4 роки тому

      Yeah, but the new plant might be full of seeds.

      Most varieties of banana and plantain are seedless and must be propagated vegetatively, using suckers as shown in the video.

  • @christophe2570
    @christophe2570 3 роки тому

    So you need to wait for he parent tree to fall over or fruit before you take the suckers?

    • @malamaainapermaculture9912
      @malamaainapermaculture9912  3 роки тому +2

      No. You can dig suckers at any time once the plant is established and has at least a couple suckers. Just be careful taking suckers around a stem that is fruiting as you can potentially destabilize it and it make more prone to falling over...
