I just love how the actors all craft these character stories for themselves. And Will has his eye on the prize: notice how he only joins in on the improv when he's reasonably sure they can win ;)

Cue Matt Leacock designing a game called "Suck It, Wil Wheaton" and the game is just everything that Wil hates and it's designed to just beat him down.

You are forgetting a key component. It has to take place in Waterdeep, with the rules saying that "One person (Preferably Felicia Day) controlling 3 characters, who scores points based on trolling the opponents

I got far too ridiculously invested in this one. Definitely a contender for favourite episode ever.

I have mixed feelings. The people involved were fun but the major rules mistakes are frustrating. I was going to share the video with my nephew who just got the game but the rules mistakes would just confuse him.

Funniest moment on tabletop so far... that's why I watch the show, not for rules.
We actually play 'backwards' of what they're saying. We got off the Island and crashed in the Desert. Then.... we took the airship to the Sky (since Forbidden Sky has been released since this).

May I make a recommandation? LoadingReadyLive is the archive channel for the twitch stream of the LoadingReadyRun internet video team. They're the people who do Desert Bus for Hope among a billion other things. One of their shows is "AFK" where they play tabletop games (the channel should have a playlist). It is really funny though I guess it doesn't have the production value or star quality of TableTop.
13:58 Alan is fricking amazing, because he always seems like his mind is wandering, and I find that goddamn hilarious!!! The way his eyes move around the behind-camera part of the set is completely unlike anyone else on this show!

Episodes like this make me appreciate the extra dimension having actors play tabletop games brings. They create characters naturally and interact so well even when the particular game doesn't call for that specifically, it definitely adds to the enjoyment watching overall.
You HAVE to organize a Firefly Board Game Tabletop with Alan, Nathan and other firefly stars. DO IT!

I did notice that as well, but Wash's quote was imo much more appropriate, with Alan Tudyk being in this episode.
Now I want Wil to get the crew together to play Firefly the Board Game. I don't care how long the video is either.
Wow. Literally the very first turn of the game and they already screw the rules up. You can clear sand off of an adjacent tile, but to actually excavate (flip over) a tile, you have to be standing on it. In order to do what Alan did on turn one, you'd have to use 2 actions to clear off the two sand tiles, then use action three to move to one of them, another action to flip it, 2 more to get to the other tile, one more to flip that one, then a final action to get back to the starting point. By my math that's eight actions as opposed to the four you're supposed to get per turn.

I love how invested Wil gets into the games and with Felicia Day it's just even better! Totally need more episodes with her in them. So far those have been my favorite episodes!
This was amazing to watch.I love how Will was so commited to his role as captain... you could actually feel all the emotions everything he was going through just to keep his crew safe. The whole backstory they made up was hillarious

Definitely one of the best Tabletop episodes! Always love Felicia Day, and the other guests were awesome and entertaining as well! Firefly references were on point.

It's really too bad y'all missed a couple of things (movement of the storm, excavating rules and paying actions for picking up a part).
I feel like it really changed game balance, now.

It wouldn't be the first time they got a rule wrong, but it might just be the editing. They edit a couple hours of play time down to the forty minute episode, so some stuff is gonna get left out.

This is a great game that I picked up right after watching this episode to play with my girlie and her son, definitely not an easy game but we have beaten it twice and had a blast playing, even when we lost. After watching almost ever episode, I now have several pages of games (especially Catan junior) that I need to hunt down and play with the family.
Thank you guys for making a great show that introduces the world to some outstanding games and don't worry about the haters all about only pointing out the mistakes you make during the games you play. We are only human and every one of us that have ever played games have made a mistake here, wrong move there, or forgot to do this at this time. It happens! Just can't lose sight of the purpose of the game......having a great time with great people in your life.

No matter how they were playing, it was truly entertaining to watch, complete with character motivation and backstory, obstacles and romance. I WOULD DEFINITELY WATCH THIS MOVIE.
This cast is fantastic! And any game with Felicia in it is great!
BUT BUT! I really have to point out that the direction of the arrow indicate the direction you move the tiles... not the hole.... #rulestickler #sorry
Edit: Really regretted posting this comment now after reading Wil's blog. He is right, he is making this to entertain and initiating new gamers if possible (greatly appreciated) and not for the "ubergamers".

Also, don't you have to be on the tile to excavate it?
No its the direction the storm moves, so that makes it the direction the hole moves.
And yes you are meant to be standing on a tile to excavate it... they are thinking of forbidden island rules where you can flip the ones next to you XP
Edit: I Just looked it up and you are in fact right, I have always played it the way they are playing it though! XD Doesn't really matter though :P Sorry! :)
Actually, they ARE moving it the right way but I don't think they've realised it. I haven't watched the entire thing, just Alan's first turn (I should be writing my essay that's due tomorrow instead darnit!) and just had to look at the comments cause of the way they flipped tiles like Forbidden Island.
Anyways, the tiles on the board are oriented in one direction, whereas the storm cards Wil draws are oriented the other way. There's a reason for the compass rose with the red arrow! (But of course now that I've watched a bit more I see that the graphics are doing it the wrong way. Oh well)
I mean, the cards show tiles with an arrow. The logical way to read them would be "move the tiles in the direction of the arrow".

They also made it harder on themselves than they had to by missing good moves - like leaving the Climber out in the sun rather than having him pick up the Archaeologist to join them (actually, Climber and Navigator make a powerful combo - the Climber carries the Navigator around everywhere, letting the Navigator move himself 3 spaces per action too) - or when they spent two actions to move between diagonally adjacent tunnels...
Overall, yeah, excavating adjacent tiles made it much, much easier on them - as shown by them winning without touching any of the water tiles...

This video caused me to buy this game for my Mom (who loves board games) for Christmas! While my Mom loves playing board games with our family, over-competitiveness has prevented us from having a consistently fun (and tearless) experience. The idea of a co-operative game is such a good idea, and the game-play from the video looked so fun, I decided it had to be under our tree today. We just played our first game, and we loved it! Everyone had a great time playing, and although we lost, we did so on the last turn of the game! Super fun and challenging, I can't wait to play again later today and in the future. Thank you so much TableTop for this video, you've generated a sale for Gamewright and you've brought hours of entertainment to our home!
I'm not sure if people care about the specifics of the rules in these videos (so please tell me, but don't berate me if it's customary not to point things out).
6:53 You can't actually excavate a tile without moving to it first.
I thought it was like forbidden island where the rules just have to be adjacent to to the one you're on. I would think to physically be on every tile you excavate would burn too many turns for the game to be very functional. Of of the three actions you get, you'd have to burn two to excavate only one tile.
I know.. it bothers me. it makes the game too easy.
I don't own the game any longer, but: I know you can dig sand on adjacent tiles, but I'm pretty sure you have to be _on_ the tile to actually excavate it.
This is the way I play it (which is harder, I've never actually won Forbidden Desert in my 20 some playthroughs) but the rulebook says "Excavate - If your pawn is on the desert side of a tile that does not have any Sand markers on it, you may excavate it for 1 action. " So I take "if your pawn is on" to mean literally on that tile.

The first time I played Forbidden Desert was right after I had read the book, "Sand" by Hugh Howey. It gave the game even more depth. Not as much as reading "The Settlers of Catan" novel and how it made the Catan world come to life, but still....
The combination of Felicia Day, Alan Tudyk, and Jon Heder on this episode was HILARIOUS! I love the imaginary worlds they each contributed...kinda hard to pay attention to the actual game...if it were at my house I'd have given up and just done role-play for the rest of the afternoon!
Pre-watching comment: So he invited Felicia again. This is gonna be fun.
Also Will, we ALL played Diplomacy, we know. Skypes were blocked, Facebook accounts were closed, carpooling ended over the plague that is that game.
CrowMercury actually, not everyone has played it. I know what the game is on a name recognition level, but I have never sat down and played a full game. :p I think I remember sitting down to start one, but having to do something and returning to the game having been started with a replacement...

To be fair, I remember how we screwed up our first few games by forgetting that tunnels protect players from Sun Beats Down. You can imagine our perfect loss record at the time was mainly because of thirst.

I really like Tabletop, and this is probably the most fun session I've seen, but they got a couple fundamental rules wrong! The biggest one is when excavating a tile you have to be on it first, can't just be next to it. And then also once a part of the flying machine is discovered, it stays on that tile and gets moved around by the storm; Wil was keeping the part in the same spot and moving tiles underneath it. Just had to mention it so viewers have a better grasp of the game. Otherwise really fun session! Oh, and Alan is awesome.
What happens when the part is found in the eye of the storm??
It stays there until the storm moves a tile underneath it, then it stays on that tile.
I've never played the game and assumed as much.
How do you set up the game? I mean there is arrows pointing at things? Wouldn't you know the locations?
All 24 tiles are shuffled and placed in a 5x5 grid with storm starting in the middle and sand tiles are placed on the 8 tiles shown in the video that make up the diamond shape. The parts are not placed during setup. They are only placed once both clues have been excavated. So even if you peeked at all the tiles and went to the intersection of the 2 clues you could not find the item. If you are still there when the second clue is excavated (assuming the shifting tiles hasn't affected the location of the intersection) the item will appear right next to you.
In the beginning that was like the best explanation that Will Wheaton has ever done for a game
