I can't believe that anything involving Joe Rogan would be awkward and off-putting. He's muscular, smokes weed, and knows all the secrets of quantum mechanics and how magnets work, as well as the oriental spiritual meditation techniques of the far east. The repeated head trauma has only made his neck thicker and stronger than ever before. He's basically the perfect man.
I watched the Joe Rogan podcast too and Joe wasn't being an alpha dick as some think he was, it was just a slightly awkward exchange because some of Mac Daddies jokes fell flat or went that one riff too far. Also dont forget that Review is edited whilst JRE is just camera cuts, you could edit the JRE episode to make it look like they had amazing chemistry.

This movie is 90s embodied. And pretty silly, with people magically guessing passwords, overacting, one liners, slackers and stoners... And its awesome COOL 90s ATTITUDE.
This is incredible. I've always liked Macaulay, he got an unfair portrayal by the media for a while. Seems like a really level-headed guy. I hope you did or do a BOTW with him in the future!
@@lordmavbmp nope. Those photos were taken when he was on set for a movie playing a creepy serial killer. He did a Christian bale to look like he did for that film but people thought that's just how he looked now
17:22 It's a reference to William Gibson. One of the founding authors of the cyberpunk genre. 17:26 Those books are real. They're called the Rainbow Series. I think a lot of appreciation of this film is lost on you because it's an hour and a half ester egg intended for an audience that knows something about computer science. Is it corny? Yes. Are the graphics way over the top? Yes. But disassembling binaries is not visually exciting. The execs wanted more than us just staring at a command prompt and a text editor, so of course they had to put in crazy visuals.
Absolutely. This is a ridiculous movie. But it is chock full of real hacker / tech culture references. Seen through a drug-hazed Hollywood filter. So yeah - the guys might mock the term "handle" but that's a real thing (albeit more from BBS culture than Internet culture at the time). It's just that everything is portrayed in such an outlandish way that it seems unbelievable. I'm not sure if this film mocks hacker culture or tries too hard to celebrate it.
arandomnamegoeshere I dont think they were mocking hacker culture - the movie contains way too many legitimate references to hacker culture to be mocking it. I think they figured out early on that they were not going to do a serious movie, and everyone simply rolled with it, piling on the sillyness and cheesiness in order to make the movie as entertaining as possible.
I think this film actually appeals more to people outside the US where the defining counter-culture was actually that sort of "cyber-rave" culture presented in the film. For example the old rave scene of the 90s and early 00s absolutely 100% dressed like the characters in Hackers, the music in the film was the same music that was played at raves, you would literally have computers set up at raves and people would be doing hacking shit (it's literally how Julian Assange started) and I've actually met tonnes of ravers that were 100% like Lillard/Cereal. The people behind the scenes of the film like the writer, director etc were British, so the film actually makes way more sense if you're not looking at it from an American perspective, but UK/EU.
to be fair, this movie was pretty accurate on how the "Scene" was back in 94-95. the techno babble was alright, and as a stylized visual representation of what looking through a file system for data, it is better than looking at a guy throwing commands in to a *-nix terminal for 10 minutes :) I love the movie hackers, its a beautiful time capsule.. of before the internet became widespread, and the script kiddies took over :p
Okay I've been playing Watch_Dogs 2 recently and I only just noticed that when you hack the Lights in that game to green for get away's, they make the "chunk chunk" noise that they used in Hackers, Literally only just noticed that coz of this Review.
love this movie. so funny seeing what people think is cool to teenagers back then. like hiding a floppy disk with some bubble gum behind a locker. also prodigy are class.
Maybe if Jake Lloyd gets out of the mental hospital he's been locked up in, and manages to not hate RLM for the Plinkett Star Wars reviews. I have a feeling Jake would sneak a gun in and kill them all on camera.
Yeah, I think Mac's description of the music in the movie was a little off. He said it was all kinda techno and had a wanna-be Rage Against The Machine vibe. Orbital's music doesn't fit into either of those categories. One of my pet peeves is how pretty much all electronic music in the 90's was categorized as "techno". Also, I recall the entire soundtrack being electronic and nothing at all sounded like Rage Against The Machine type of music.
I believe the “Rage” sounding band that Mac is referring to is the band you see playing live towards the end of the movie. They were Urban Dance Squad, a Dutch band. Also, the soundtrack features like, half of the Prodigy album, “Music for the Jilted Generation”. Yes, annoying when all electronic music is called Techno. Adults, am I right? 🙄 🤣
Massive attack - Protection as well. Such a good soundtrack, yeah love these guys, but they're not really understanding of 90's English trip-hop and the underground electronic scene
Although I still love this Movie. I find myself listening to the soundtrack 100 more times than I loved the Movie. Hand in hand it's like a Marvel team up. I dont think you can have Hackers either way. You cant Have Hackers without the Soundtrack. And the soundtrack makes No sense without the Movie Hackers.
As a 20 year old Raver & Hacker when this movie came out, it actually very slyly captured elements of a subculture that *ACTUALLY* existed at the time. Those costumes were what ravers were wearing, people really were hacking systems like that, Phone Phreaking was a real thing. The running joke at the time was that we should start hacking in PVC clothing instead of sweatpants. There is a lot of hilarious hyperbole in the film, but as a historical document it captures a moment that really existed.
Exactly Rob. I was too young for the scene. But I remember me and my friends looking up to people like this. Like Culkin says, it's a snapshot of that exact time. All those people grew up and got real jobs, but this was totally a thing.
The game that they play in the movie is actually a real game, it's called WipEout and it was for the original SONY PlayStation, and the footage they used in the movie was a special cut made from the game assets to advertise the game.
I thought Jack paired with Macaulay pretty well for this review. Glad they brought up the spinning phone booths, it's such a groaner but that's what makes the movie great.
"Handle" was the correct term .. thats what it was called in the BBS days :) Reeally .. its a perfect movie, because it absolutely nails the spirit of the culture back then, at least in your main nerd town hacker culture. Its overblown, like it has to be, but a lot of the feeling of how they spoke, and certainly the aliases they used etc, was totally right ... if you knew a bunch of Amiga crackers, you knew this movie was perfect :)
Hell, even in the later AOL and Compuserve days the word "handle" was still used. Even guys who just dealt with proggies and warez used handles that sounded like that.
Macaulay Culkin, seems like such a normal person here. In my head he would be so out of touch with reality, being that he worked at a young age and made tons of money. He's muscular, smokes weed, and knows all the secrets of quantum mechanics and how magnets work, as well as the oriental spiritual meditation techniques of the far east. The repeated head trauma has only made his neck thicker and stronger than ever before. He's basically the perfect man.
@@KevinJDildonik CaulCaul.....? What the fuck? For real?
I watched the Joe Rogan podcast too and Joe wasn't being an alpha dick as some think he was, it was just a slightly awkward exchange because some of Mac Daddies jokes fell flat or went that one riff too far.
Also dont forget that Review is edited whilst JRE is just camera cuts, you could edit the JRE episode to make it look like they had amazing chemistry.
Get Culkin to review one of his own movies!
xXFallenHyperionXx I wouldn’t mind seeing them talk about The Good Son
Oh what I'd give for a re:View of Saved!
What if, a Best Of The Worst, on Home Alone rip-offs?
Party Monsters !
The Good Son would be my pick
"Hacking the gibson" - a reference to cyberpunk author William Gibson.
@private_johnny_rico You just pissed off all the nerds dude. Also people who are serious critics of novels. Unless you mean the book "hacked" you in a positive sense.
@private_johnny_rico I have heard it can be... a chore at times to slog through some of the descriptive verbosity. Have you read Snow Crash?
@private_johnny_rico I can't think of a moment while reading Snow Crash where I wasn't either fully engaged by the descriptive writing, or completely entertained by the intelligent word play and hilarious use of simile.
Reminiscing about the '90s with Macaulay Culkin has to be a head-trip.
Add Macaulay Culkin to best of the worst!
Where's the petition? Consider it signed.
Well they had him appear briefly in Half in the Bag and now Re:View, so i'm really holding out for a best of the worst Macaulay Culkin episode. In general I love when a new Best of the Worst comes out, but that would just be brilliant.
He will be on an episode. He posted on his Instagram a picture of him on the BotW set
master caution add more Best of the Worst to Best of the Worst!
That Halloween episode was the first one in a while.
He has already appeared in a BotW episode though, albeit in the end skit. I too would like to see him in a whole BotW episode.
Yes this movie is so dated but the soundtrack is amazing!!!! I forgot how great it was until i rewatched this. You got Orbital, Underworld, Leftfield etc. Check it out!
The prodigy!!!
i’ve never heard of home alone but i love home alone 2: lost in new york
You are thinking of Home Alone 2: ESCAPE from New York.
Do you mean home alone 2: lost in new york, in cinemas november 20th 1992 starring Macaulay Culkin who plays the young boy, kevin mccallister, who gets lost in new york after getting separated from his parents at an airport and now has to defeat the same burglars who tried to ransack his home a year earlier?
@@Viktomic I'd also add the movie where Kevin is saved by Donald Trump... it was a strange sequel.
Yes, George Costanza. There’s a first one.

I just saw that movie for the first time in preparation for Halloween too haha
Seeing Makulay Culkin in it was so oftputting
Literally one of my favorite movies. I watch it just to be taken back to my childhood and get that 90’s feels.
This movie is 90s embodied. And pretty silly, with people magically guessing passwords, overacting, one liners, slackers and stoners... And its awesome COOL 90s ATTITUDE.
When they mention the 28k or something baud modem I always fucking cackle
This is incredible. I've always liked Macaulay, he got an unfair portrayal by the media for a while. Seems like a really level-headed guy. I hope you did or do a BOTW with him in the future!
John O'Connell McCauley: Breath of the Wild
Was that shit with him looking like a 8 foot skeleton real?
Well I know he wasn't. He may have changed and become more mature.
@@MrHunterseeker Maybe he's more comfortable talking with a skinny movie nerd rather than an mma weirdo
Occams Razor so much this.
Damn kid. Tying up the phone line again. They're all alike...
You said it all. Agree 100%.
arandomnamegoeshere I dont think they were mocking hacker culture - the movie contains way too many legitimate references to hacker culture to be mocking it. I think they figured out early on that they were not going to do a serious movie, and everyone simply rolled with it, piling on the sillyness and cheesiness in order to make the movie as entertaining as possible.
Macaulay Culkin subverted my expectations.
Didnt expect to see him here .
I applauded him for being different
He broke new ground
I clapped because I know who he is.
I just came to get something to eat
I think this film actually appeals more to people outside the US where the defining counter-culture was actually that sort of "cyber-rave" culture presented in the film. For example the old rave scene of the 90s and early 00s absolutely 100% dressed like the characters in Hackers, the music in the film was the same music that was played at raves, you would literally have computers set up at raves and people would be doing hacking shit (it's literally how Julian Assange started) and I've actually met tonnes of ravers that were 100% like Lillard/Cereal.
The people behind the scenes of the film like the writer, director etc were British, so the film actually makes way more sense if you're not looking at it from an American perspective, but UK/EU.
this movie was HIGHLY influential for me
one of my favorites
to be fair, this movie was pretty accurate on how the "Scene" was back in 94-95. the techno babble was alright, and as a stylized visual representation of what looking through a file system for data, it is better than looking at a guy throwing commands in to a *-nix terminal for 10 minutes :) I love the movie hackers, its a beautiful time capsule.. of before the internet became widespread, and the script kiddies took over :p
Mr. Robot does the shells and it look legit. Most of their hacks are like 98% legit. Even the tools are real.
Macualy is older than Jack, let that sink in
To be fair, when Macauley had problems he looked weird, good that he's gotten over that, though.
Impossible, Macaulay Culkin has hair

I love how Matthew Lillard not only played Shaggy in the live action Scooby Doo, he actually still voices him in cartoons. Its just so perfect.

Okay I've been playing Watch_Dogs 2 recently and I only just noticed that when you hack the Lights in that game to green for get away's, they make the "chunk chunk" noise that they used in Hackers, Literally only just noticed that coz of this Review.
Macaulay is a brilliant addition. Holy crap, he's a a perfect fit for this channel. Hope he sticks around.
I'm no Master of Perception, but I reckon this Culkin kid has a future as some kind of child actor.
love this movie. so funny seeing what people think is cool to teenagers back then. like hiding a floppy disk with some bubble gum behind a locker. also prodigy are class.
Wow, Len Kabasinski, Max Landis and now Macauley Culkin? you guys get all the celebrities!
And the screen writer of thr Blair Witch project...the new one.
Nah, Macaulay Culkin is a legend, did a great job and it was one of my favorite movies.

The game they played is Wipeout for the PlayStation. The filmmaker added some additional graphics but it’s still Wipeout.
The film and game even share some of the same soundtrack.
Thank you.. and this was an actuall arcade.

Indeed. Great game.
@Sagarmatha Yup, you're totally right.

Jake Lloyd...pending.
Edward Furlong...pending.
Maybe if Jake Lloyd gets out of the mental hospital he's been locked up in, and manages to not hate RLM for the Plinkett Star Wars reviews. I have a feeling Jake would sneak a gun in and kill them all on camera.
Edward Furlong I think is in prison for repeated stupid crimes

Best song ever; Halcyon On and On
Yeah, I think Mac's description of the music in the movie was a little off.
hell yeah dude, also underworld - cowgirl
Massive attack - Protection as well. Such a good soundtrack, yeah love these guys, but they're not really understanding of 90's English trip-hop and the underground electronic scene
Although I still love this Movie. I find myself listening to the soundtrack 100 more times than I loved the Movie. Hand in hand it's like a Marvel team up. I dont think you can have Hackers either way.
You cant Have Hackers without the Soundtrack.
And the soundtrack makes No sense without the Movie Hackers.

@Adolf Obama Faced, in the corner (or couches, if available), with one eye open...
20+ years later and some movies show hackers pretty much like this.
TV, movies and games still try to make programming and hacking seem like an e-games sport.
I came here to say this. The rave clothes and the phreaking was very real.
Yeah right around the birth of rave music, caught a classic tune at 6:29.
I gotta see this movie.
Exactly Rob. I was too young for the scene. But I remember me and my friends looking up to people like this. Like Culkin says, it's a snapshot of that exact time. All those people grew up and got real jobs, but this was totally a thing.
@@JimmyTurner - They are. It was a real phony 'Johnny come lately' scene at the time.
I agree- this is how I remember the rave, hack, phreak scene. The movie is accurate to a degree.... and yet it still feels so dated
The game that they play in the movie is actually a real game, it's called WipEout and it was for the original SONY PlayStation, and the footage they used in the movie was a special cut made from the game assets to advertise the game.
Yes and let's be honest, the graphic are clearly better than the original Star Fox 😊

*"No, shave!" November*
+1 for the Amiga reference! Yeah it's spot on n perfect, if anything it's actually almost 2 perfect 2 what the culture was like.

Macaulay Culkin, seems like such a normal person here. In my head he would be so out of touch with reality, being that he worked at a young age and made tons of money. To hear him talk about hackers, and original star fox ect, i realized he is still a just a person. This goes for anyone famous. I assume they go to parties, and do things us normal people cant even imagine. Turns out they are just like us lol. Please say we will see more of Mr. Culkin in the future!
All of the guest stars on RLM are fanboys though. Love it. Its like seeing kids geeking out to their heroes
He was also on Joe Rogan's podcast kinda recently being pretty funny and chill. Seems like a cool dude.
It's almost like everyone is just a human brain in a human body. Wild.
My guess is ever since he got rid of the drug problem, he grew a lot of sense to him.
When Mr. Protagonist Guy said the line "Well it looks like I am on top." I I cringed so hard I felt like vomming. His delivery was flatter than a 4-hour old stein of beer...
