if anybody believes that the army in Nepal is a safer place than being around the local people, he is totally wrong. Village people got their life organized, the army is a place where young men of all kinds, even villains, spend a difficult time, away from home and family. Western women among them are never ignored. And that is the reason why western woman take a great risk when they travel alone in areas where it is easy to let bodies disappear

We hike in groups of no less than four and as many as a dozen. It’s a group we formed years ago at the gym. I’m female and I love hiking and would prefer to be alone but it’s just not safe, and it turned out I wasn’t the only person who felt that way. We meet on Sunday mornings to go solo hiking together. The only commitments are be on time to the meeting point, keep in easy vocal range so we hear if someone is in distress, and leave each other alone. We don’t chat, we eat alone, etc. and it works out surprisingly well. I wish groups like ours would catch on globally when I hear stories like this.

I grew up with Aubrey in Greeley, Colorado, from elementary school through high school. She was an incredible person and a close friend of my cousin. Aubrey and my cousin were a part of the popular girls one year older than myself and my friends. She always made a point to say hello to me because I was Shoni's cousin, usually before Shoni even. This made me cooler in my friends eyes in middle school and high school because Aubrey and the popular older girls would always talk to me. The last time I saw her in person was my freshman year of college, her sophomore year at CU. The world lost an incredible person. Every time I see a dragonfly, I think of her.

When she went missing she left her dorm in Flagstaff Az to buy weed in Phoenix or Tuscan. She was an adult, she could have done what she wanted without disappearing like that. 2 things to comment on here. 1 - When the locals say to you "It's too late in the day to make that trek" you listen to them. Always listen to the locals wherever you go (within reason of course). 2 - You would think that in a country like Nepal where (I don't know the number) 50% of their income relies on tourists the government would have a "don't mess with" policy on tourists and take any acts against tourists (from anywhere) very very seriously. This is such a frustrating story and I feel so sorry for the family. I have 2 kids and I can't even take my mind there. So very sorry.

Nepal is an incredible country with amazing people and breathtaking landscapes. However there is a risk traveling to foreign countries, especially as a Western woman. Even though major cities like Kathmandu and Pokhara are very safe, the same cannot be said traveling in rural parts of Nepal where there is significantly less infrastructure and the people are not nearly as educated. Unfortunately many men throughout Asia can have a very perverted view of Western women. It's not advisable to travel outside of the major cities if you're a woman traveling alone in these parts of the world. If you're going to visit India thinking it would be as safe as Switzerland or Spain, you're seriously mistaken and need a reality check.
EDIT: This is coming from an Indian-American guy by the way.

Women alone are subject to problems they wouldn't encounter in a group or if they were male instead of female. I'm not blaming this young woman, but it is a cautionary tale. I backpacked and then hitchhiked through North Africa and across the Sahara. Each camp area with travelers I asked for female hitchhiking partners. Usually more volunteers than not. 3 months with one of them . Never an issue, they felt safer and a couple got more rides. Good street smarts and emotional balance along with a willingness to learn and compromise when possible. She punched out a 15 year old that attempted to attack her in a restroom. And I used her walking stick to knock out an attacker. We slept together for months but there was no desire for "romance" ....rough travel is more about survival, besides after weeks without bathing, in a filthy environment, water rationing, diseased food, attraction is only a fantasy.

I think the dangers of solo travel/trekking aren't widely known. I trekked through Europe on my own out of college and it was probably one of the most dangerous things I've done. I nearly got kidnapped after I declined an invitation to tea. The invitation was on an urban/rural-ish trek and the near-kidnapping was in a large, busy city-same person. It sucked. My advice: 1. Know your surroundings. Anyone can be danger/friend. 2. Take a weapon and know how to use it. When I go solo hiking, I stick a sharp pencil in my hair bun- weapon. 3. Know an exit. Know where the trails are and where help is so that if you need to run, you are running towards help and not something worse.

I had no idea that Nepal was so dangerous. I trekked there in 2016 with a group, became injured and had to stay back from the group as they moved on. Since I was with a group with an excellent guide, they made arrangements for me to go to lower elevations in case I had to be evacuated. They also sent an assistant guide with me who called ahead and made sure the tea house owners knew I was coming. I actually felt very protected, having the guide stick tight with me and the lead guide calling every night to be sure I was there and safe. And because I was older, slow, and injured, I would have been an easy target. I can’t imagine doing it alone even under the best of circumstances. The trails and mountains all start to blend in. Up up up and down down down. Just a few steps but more like hundreds of steps. But the locals were some of the kindest people I’ve met anyplace in the world. And I consider myself to be very blessed to have experienced the beautiful country and the fantastic people and that I was able to hobble out under my own power. Glad I did it once. Knowing the dangers now, not sure I’d be up for the adventure again.

I did a study abroad in Nepal in 2007 (from Texas) and there was unrest with the prince issue, and the Maoist demanding bribes on trails. Leaving Pokhara heading back to Kathmandu we got stuck in a road block for 11 hours due to a man getting killed on a motorcycle. The family demanded justice, the nepalese armed forces showed up, villagers pushed the truck into the river, and when it was all said and done the family was paid $1500 bucks for his life. People tend to think places like Nepal are peace, love, and Namaste. The reality is life is very hard in those villages. I'm not defending terrible people and their actions, but as a traveler it is your duty to not get lost in the fairytale. The Nepalese are amazingly generous and loving people who are being squeezed by their government, the Chinese, the Indians, the British (Gurkhas), and then have to watch foreigners sip chai while they make tips hauling gear up those mountains in plastic flip flops. I feel for this woman and her family, and wish them all the hope and peace in the world! I like the fsthers statement about what Lonely Planet describes Nepal as because he is spot on!

Having trekked in Nepal myself I can absolutely agree, do not trek alone! And I have a possible theory about her disappearance based on my experience.
For 7 days I was on a small guided trek in the Himalayas, but randomly took some time alone up into the mountains, I was also in my early 20’s at that time and still naive to some of the possible dangers.
During one exploration away from the group who stayed in the village.. I found an incredible waterfall and stripped down for a natural shower.
After a short time I felt an uneasy feeling and despite the beauty and adventure I decided to hurry up and get myself back down the mountain to the village.
On my way.. I could hear the monkeys chattering high up in the trees.. it was strange to witness, but thought it was just normal.
When I returned to the village the locals informed us that we should not leave the village since the monkeys screaming in the trees indicates a Bengal Tiger was in the forest hunting.
So basically I made myself an obvious easy target for Tiger 🐅 food.

I have been so lucky so many times…I honestly wonder pretty often how I survived my teens and early 20’s as I hiked and lived solo all over Alaska, Oregon, Montana and in Idaho some…as a single female with my dog later in life I credit my signature leather Stetson cowboy hat and large malamute/Pitt heeled mix dogs with me being alive today, I have noticed in life that people think twice when I have the hat on and also when I have a dog with me. That said I was lucky to make it out of some sketchy situations! Love your channel thank you, from this hillbilly mamma in the backwoods of Tennessee

It's a harsh world no matter where you go. In the USA over 600,000 people go missing every year. Since 1916 over 1000 have disappeared from our national parks. That number may be underreported. The Grand Canyon is number one in that regard. Cruise ships have reported around 200 missing persons since the year 2000.
Being prepared and having a good sense of situational awareness can make for a fine trek, but giving up your plans to total strangers along the way is not a good idea.

Same question echoes in my head over and over when watching this: it’s simple and cliche: why? WHY? Why travel alone there? I know the magic about walking alone too, and I need it occasionally or very regularly to be honest but to do it in a region that is knowingly dangerous, especially for single hiking women? A country and place that have a rigorous history of disappearances and killings? Is it worth it? Is it about playing against your destiny or is it about adrenaline addiction? Or simply but sad, naivety?

I traveled all and I mean all over Nepal from 2001 till 2011 for professional reason and for trekking. I did it with my husband, with Nepalese colleagues, alone. Never I felt unsafe, apart from some armed conflict situations back then.
I even would say the people there are less threating then in the average western culture. But... one needs to understand that real law enforcement is very far away in these mountains. And with law enforcement this far away it would be advisable to be vigilant in any country.
Also it isn't true that the government doesn't care. They do care and that's why Langtangs solo trekking is dead for decades.
Also accidents happen. Trails in Langtang are less maintained then Annapurna or Everest or Manaslu. Yet Langtang is near Kathmandu, has less altitude to people think they can do it.
Have you seen the rivers there? You trip and fall and you're gone forever.
