  • Lonnie demonstrates how to put two tarps together to make a tent condominium. Put two tarps together to make two separate living quarters but yet both can be opened up into one larger open area.

    We started our camping season a few weeks ago, on our first trip I had forgotten the tent poles were stored for the winter in a different place than the tent and rainfly and were back home in the garage. My wife would have thought me to be a proper mtn man if I would have been able to pull this off. I will be trying it out the next time we go up. Thank you again Lonnie for posting these videos. Your explanations and demonstrations are easy to fallow for a southern California city boy like me :) Your living the dream!!

    Great stuff. gave me lots of ideas...big tarp for a tent and make a vestibule out of a smaller one. Nice tip also about the floor not protruding from the edges of your shelter. I see tons of videos showing this when using a tarp for a tent floor liner and I always have to chuckle. Been there, done that, wrung out the t-shirt.

    Great! This potentially solves a problem that I'd been pondering. Since we last tent camped, my Sis has come to live with us. She needs a certain amount of privacy, yet I don't think she'd feel secure, being alone in a separate tent. Since she's never slept in a tent type situation, doubt she'd get much sleep because of all the things that go bump in the night in the woods. This approach will give her a sense of security, as she has her own room in our house, so to speak. Just have to figure out what sizes will work best for 3 people + gear + small dog.
    Thank you for taking the time & effort to teach the options available for various circumstances. Much appreciated here. Just added this to Favorites, so I don't lose track of it, once I have appropriate tarps to practice setup. Thumbs up!

    Excellent demo and a great tarp setup for a closed shelter. Looks like a low(er) pitch Miners tent. A pair of backpackers could each carry a tarp (like the old Army days with shelter halves) and have a great shelter at night. If you did both sides with doors you should get pretty good ventilation and of course access from both sides. Oooh, at 15:20 I see a solo backpackers nighttime sleeping quarters with a covered cooking/storage area for rainy weather, cool… Makes me curious what a solo hiker could do with a couple of smaller ultralight tarps.
    Side note: I tried the melted Beeswax boot laces just for grins. They are MUCH studier than my wipe on waxed laces. However, lesson learned (for me) I used a coffee can on a small burner. I put the laces in too soon. Wax was melted but the can bottom was so hot it also melted the paracord along with the wax :-) Next time I’ll melt the wax, remove the container from the stove and them dip the laces!

    I just discovered moving blankets at harbor freight dirt cheap, they are rugged, light, heavily stitched, and make great windbreaks, as well as a plethora of other uses! Don't know if anyone else has tried them! I got the smaller one, figured it could lay on top of tarp on ground and my stuff can sit on it?? Less than 5 bucks and honestly tucks away easy into backpack with two big tarps and assortment of rope!

    • @Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival

      dan moyer Thank you. A tarp should be no different than a tent since they are manufactured from the same materials and coated or treated with the same water repellency products. Tarps with grommets tend to have problems after a while with the grommets if not careful but I understand that tarps with quality stitched in fabric loops or tabs are more durable. just some thoughts

    • @Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival
      @Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival  8 років тому

      +Gerry Buck A person could make an A frame tent with a tarp but it would require a very large tarp since so much would be used up for the ends. The base of the tent would be much shorter than the top as well.

  • @Marialla.
    @Marialla. 9 років тому

    I haven't seen this yet, so tell me what you think: what if you set up two tarps like the second configuration, but not touching - using two separate tent poles, and spaced maybe 6' apart, but still facing each other, then built a "last all night" long fire in between them? I'm thinking that would deflect the wind away from the fire so it wouldn't blow into either tarp, but smoke could still escape straight up or sideways, and you'd be caputuring the heat from both sides of the fire. Might be good for "buddy camping" where you don't necessarily want to be THAT close to your partner at night.
    Do you think that would work?

    • @Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival
      @Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival  9 років тому

      Marialla Sounds like a great idea to me and should work if tents are placed with the wind direction in mind to minimize smoke in the tents.

    With a little more work, you should be able to get rid of the pole in the middle by lashing some thread throw the holes on to a tree, right? Would probably work bether with just one tarp, but should work with two aswell, to get rid of the pole in the middle to get some more space. Nice vid.

      You are right. It has just been too long since I bought these tarps as i actually had these two tarps for many years before I had even done this video. I think that i may have bought them from a national sporting goods store that we have several outlets here in Alaska Called "Sportsmans Warehouse". One online sporting goods company that usually has a good selection of nylon tarps is campmor dot com. I have not bought from them online but i used to buy from them many many years ago through their catalogs I would get in the mail. I was pleased then with the products and the company.

    This looks awesome. What if a storm happens to pop up in the night. How does it do with rain where the two come together?

    • @Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival
      @Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival  9 років тому +1

      fafnar1 Thank you. If you notice very carefully, in the video you will see that there is quite a bit of overlap in the top. So position the tent to where the narrow ends are towards and away from the wind rather than the broadsides towards the wind. Also make sure that you overlap the top so that the over lap is pointing with the wind rather than against the wind. positioned and rigged like this, it should withstand a very strong breeze or moderately hard wind as well as rain. You will of course need to make sure that the stakes are very securely staked. The size and composition of the stakes would be dependent on the soil type that they are used in.

  • @chivone21

    I enjoy your videos!! Very nice, lots of information for us greenhorns. Only one question on the dual tarp configuration. Once you are inside, how do you stake the flaps closed? I mean, I can see how you can do one, but to get that "other flap" to overlap and get staked down to become rainproof, how do I do that? Ask a raccoon to do it for me?

    • @Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival
      @Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival  8 років тому

      +chivone21 You use a stake that allows you to slip the grommet over it instead of placing the stake through the grommet before staking in the ground. You then reach out and place the outer door flap in place on the stake and THEN you close the inner door flap the same way on it's own prepositioned stake. If you can not find stakes with narrow enough heads to fit through the grommets then do the following. Tie a short loop of cordage such as paracord through your grommet and then place the cordage loop over the stake head.

      Many people will "trench" around their camp shelter on the uphill side at least to route water away from the shelter. We never have that problem here in South Central Alaska

      bobinmissouri First of all you may be inbterested in seeing one of my later videos on how to make a tarp tipi. I have not got around to finishing the stove for the tipi but will eventually get it done and video record the process. the tipi video is located here. ua-cam.com/video/wtLdMIaIIFw/v-deo.html
      I will be using a fiberglass welding blanket as my stove jack material that installs in the tent wall. I willl probably be fastening it to the tent fabric by sewing velcro strips to the tent and to the stove jack. Good luck with hunting

      +Far North Bushcraft And Survival Lonnie I know it's been some time since you originally shared this with us but...I just realized that your tarp appears to be a coated nylon, far better than typical poly ripstop tarps. Can you share your info on the tarp. Who makes it? Where might I get one?
      Thank you for sharing.
