- The death of Her Majesty The Queen is a time of national loss and our condolences go to King Charles III and the Royal Family.
Constitutional monarchy was one of the innovations of the Enlightenment, creating the ideal that the institution was one of duty and service to the citizens of a nation. No-one has risen to that challenge as emphatically as The Queen and we are thankful for her dedication to the role and to the people of our nations.
Our home concert hall is named in her honour, the Queen Elizabeth Hall at the Southbank Centre. We look forward to performing there again soon and remembering the values we share of progress, tolerance and community that The Queen sought to promote throughout her long life in public service.
This performance of Sospiri (Sighs) by Edward Elgar was recorded in 2021. We have released it here to mark this moment.

It takes a stronger man than me to hear this and not have one's eyes fill with tears.
How truly beautiful. Thank you.
Wow! This changes from sounding like a string quartet to a full orchestra. Stunningly beautiful
Very beautiful. I hope this is also played at the State Funeral. Elgar wrote his Nursery Suite for the Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret Rose, and Her Majesty was one of the last living links to the composer, whom she met as a girl.
The telepathy that goes on between players here is palpable. Ok it's a big acoustic but the unity of phrasing is obvious in spite of the room. Just staggering!
I am sorry to say this, but this use of strings is very derivative and does not fully express the level or kind of sadness that the passing of a person like Queen Elizabeth should be memorialized by. There are so many more instruments to add to the sound that could be used. Even keeping with the phrasing and structure of the melody that was mimicking the lamentations of funeral attendees, just using strings for the entire piece just feels hallow for even expressing general grief, let alone the death it is intended to represent.
Have you not seen the Elgar score?
@@citizent6999 I haven't.
The entire reason for the OAE’s existence is to play pieces as close to the composer’s original conception as possible. This is no exception…
I love seeing historic playing of this kind of music. Not all historic performances need to be Classical and before! Even romantic music has its fair share of differences in playing technique to that of the modern standard.
Beautifully done, dressed in black, images in b+w. Lovely choice for remembrance, and hearing Elgar with glissandi in a modern performance is a treat. Thanks.
That was a beautiful performance, matched by the message in the description. I was just thinking that this would be the kind of piece I would like played at my own funeral, and then I read what you wrote.
Incredible piece, wonder why this piece doesn't get the exposure Elgars twin to this gets?
Absolutely beautiful. Thank you.
I love this piece by Elgar, it's as if all the sadness of the upcoming WW1 was entombed in this piece, the "sigh" and sadness of what was to come
I love this piece. Strangely I first heard it as incidental music to the BBC drama about Kenneth Williams called Fantabulosa. Great music can find you in the most unexpected places!
❤
thank you. thank you. thank you.
So beautiful.
Musical Gold - Very beautiful ❤
I also like the funeral march from Handel's oratorio Saul which was played at QEII's father's funeral in 1952.
Very lovely. Now I'm going to listen to Liszt's Un Sospiro.
An old BBC Radio producer introduced me to this, exquisite.
What a deep piece of music.
Wonderful! ❤
Stunningly beautiful and moving. Thank you.
that final shot, i thought was a photograph, until the last string was plucked..
This should be what Elgar wrote for real he wants
What a wonderful piece...
Fantastic - period.
Definitive version
Just right - thank you.
Very special.
