Will Single Bevel Broadheads Fly Out Of A Crossbow?!

  • Today's video we're going to see if a single bevel broadhead will fly true out of a newer, high speed crossbow. The bow I'll be shooting is a Killer Instinct SWAT XP, the bolt a Sirius Phoenix and the broadhead a 150 grain Cutthroat. I'd venture to say many crossbow hunters would not view the Cutthroat as a crossbow broadhead, especially out of a bow that shoots 415 FPS. To those people, I'll say "This video may surprise you."

    Nice Video. I'm shooting the new VPA 150 Grain Single Bevel @ 362 fps avg. 512 Grain arrow. 110 grain insert also. I can hit a half-dollar at fifty yards. Same point of impact as the field point. Paper tuning was the key for me.

      I take it you like those new single bevel VPA’s? My buddy’s and I were looking at those the other day, really like how they look. If I switch broadheads (or add a broadhead to my quiver) this year, it’s probably going to be those 👍

      @@draggindeeroutdoors Yes I do. I actually rented broadheads from broadhead connection. I tried the VPA, Iron Will 150 solids and Valkyrie 150. Iron Will and VPA flew identical. Valkyrie a little left and high, not sure why, but not bad. If you order VPA be sure to get the 15% discount. I bought the VPA over Iron Will because of price point. Now I hear Iron Will is going up 10%. Yikes.

    I shot the 200 grain double bevel vpa 2 blade from a bull dog 440 excaliber with a 22" fmj bolt and 120 brass inset toatle weight was like 620 grains and it absolutely deletes moose and elk. Farthest I'd shoot that set up was 60 yards.

    Bareshaft tune with heavy field points? Yes, they will. I shoot 200 grain steel insert Grizzlies. I shoot aluminum because much easier to tune than carbon. 2216s cut down to 19 inches will shoot 200 to 250 grains well. I like a little helical on the vanes too. Also shoot Zwickey's No Mercy single bevels with steel inserts 75 to 125 grain steel inserts.

    Love these RF crossbow tuning videos. What distance did you do your paper tuning at?

  • @thomasreece3903
    @thomasreece3903 7 місяців тому +1

    How do you feel about tuning your arrows ? I’ve found that by using small o rings to adjust the broad head to the fletching works best out of my bow. I shoot a muzzy 4 blade 100 grs. I tune by using the o ring two blades down two hen feathers down. You can also tighten the broad head and adjust by moving the insert but be careful broad heads are sharp.

    Hey guy's, really enjoy the videos. I've got my Sirius Phoenix bolts on the way, im shooting a Wicked Ridge Tenpoint flying at 360 currently.
    Started the ranch fairy process last year with my compound so I have a little knowledge in the process. This year I'm having to go with my crossbow I boogered my shoulder up pretty good, but the way I view it it's just a bow turned side ways.
    I'm going to film the paper tuning process & will share my results, ranch fairy has the compunds covered. But not nearly enough research is being done for crossbows.
    So I believe the more we can share with one another & the crossbow hunting community as a whole, were just doing our part in bettering the sport. Making sure more folks have the most efficient, lethal & perfectly flying set up as possible.
    I am curious, are you having wider gaps at distance or are you maintaining more consistent & closer/normal gaps at distant ??

    • @draggindeeroutdoors
      @draggindeeroutdoors  3 роки тому +1

      When you say “gaps” are you referring to group size? If so, yes our group sizes are smaller, our fixed blade broadhead flight is excellent and our confidence is at an all-time high. Can’t beat that! Good luck, you’ll enjoy those Sirius Phoenix bolts!

      @@draggindeeroutdoors Heck yeah bud that also is a crucial factor & it gives me more confidence knowing you get a true flying, perfectly plum bolt right out of the box. Other than maybe some potential nock tuning but that's no biggie just tinker.
      I should've worded it a bit my first question a bit more specific, what I was trying to say if my dumb brain could have spat it out lol. Are your gaps between your reticle's maintaining an even gap (meaning reticle to reticle evenly) at distance or for instance are you having to maybe drop 1 1/2 to 2 reticle's below your 40 yd reticle at 50 yds ? With both broadhead & field tip ??
      I learned as well last year what you guys were mentioning & you are 100% correct, broadheads fly heavier than field tip.
      I'm only curious about what I asked because thus far the testing has concluded, that your pin or in this case reticle gaps should actually become more narrow/even over distance because it is maintaining it's velocity better over distance.
      So I'm trying to build some kind of consensus of if that same fact carries over with crossbows as well, I am assuming it will. But until we take note & test that theory we do not know for sure.
      Thank you for taking time to share your knowledge & being willing to communicate & discuss results, very much respect bud & hopefully we can achieve some incredibly valuable information.

    first off you use a swat with an enclosed barrel which gives better flight to begin with,a heavy arrow which slows it down already and at only 30 yards!...
    no groups .what you only tuned one arrow out of how many?

    • @draggindeeroutdoors
      @draggindeeroutdoors  2 роки тому +1

      XP was chosen for this test since its my the fastest bow I own. 3 arrows were tuned, all shot the cutthroats well. 1 arrow shown for demonstration purposes. The intent of the video was simply to show that a broadhead such as this (which is not typically regarded as a crossbow broadhead) can and will fly well with properly tuned arrows.

    Hello, good night, I see your videos from Mexico and I want to learn about crossbows, I've a killer instict 415 ripper and am using 20 "arrows with 100 gr practive tips. Should I put the 150 blades to have the telescopic sight ready or can I still using the 100 gr
    tips? I wanna go to hunt a wild hog about 40 yards thanks for your answer and I apologized for my bad english

      Hey Gerardo! Thanks for the comment. If you want to use a 150 grain broadhead, definitely buy some 150 grain practice tips as well. Best you can do is tune your bolt to your bow. I have a couple videos where we did this on a Ripper 415. Good luck!
      PS your English is great!

      @@draggindeeroutdoors carbon to carbon length which I'm guessing is the length of the bolt. then there's recommended services. There options are hand squaring.Then component install and hand squaring then full bolt customization.

      @@daltonisom6265 yup, those are all services you can choose from. Certainly specify your carbon-to-carbon length...after that its really up to you whether you want Sirius to build you a fully customized bolt or if you want to do it. You may want to call them quick and confirm if the Phoenix shafts come pre-fletched or bareshaft. I think they come bareshaft now.

    For someone looking to buy his 1st crossbow, this is confusing. So, how, when, do you zero your scope in?

    • @ParasitikOne
      @ParasitikOne 2 роки тому

      Basically pick up a few different bolts (and inserts if you want to front load it) test flight with various field point weights. Pick a Broadhead of that weight and fling it… zero it with what you will be shooting/hunting with… any difference (even as little as 25 grains can cause point of impact change)
