To be fair I used to think Charlie was a bit of a jerk sometimes but now I can see where he is coming from. Just because someone is family doesn’t mean you can take advantage of their generous hospitality.
Really, I always sided with Charlie when he and Alan got into fights that ended up with the latter moving out. Yes, Charlie overreacted about the bowl on season 5, but Alan wanted to be treated as an equal member of the household without actually contributing anything, not a dime. Then, the $38 issue. Charlie promised to pay them back, but seriously after living at his Malibu beach house for free for 6 years, one would think that Alan could have let it go. But the episode where he moves Melissa in really got on my nerves, and the fact that Charlie was never upfront with Chelsea about the fact that Alan never paid rent which more than justified his anger at him having one more person living in his house made things worse. Sure, the situations were funny, but seeing the Alan from earlier seasons that was responsible and hard-working and then seeing how much of leech he became is pure character destruction by the writers.
Alan thought he deserved freaking heaven above for how he was treated.🙄 And he stopped being a caring being because no matter what he did when he was caring, he suffered

Alan definitely over the years though turned into a leech and was constantly eating Charlie's leftovers with his women. Plus you would have thought that Alan would have learned from his first marriage to do a pren up but he rolled the dice again and got screwed over AGAIN! Charlie was a good brother for letting him stay and putting up with Alan taking advantage of him. Like the part where Alan agreed to pay for the dinner on their double date and he tries to do everything he can to make Charlie pay for it, saying he forgot his wallet or has no money to later finding out he had $5,000 cash hidden in his bed room. Charlie should have kept that money. Judith was so wrong to him but can't blame her for finally getting sick of Alan.
ALAN: THE POSTER-CHILD AGAINST MARRIAGE; Courts don't care if you go to jail, or are stuck living in your car, or with an abusive older brother who treats you like shit.
After this, Alan desperately tries to think of something else that would make Charlie want to let him stay so he mentions that he makes delicious french toast. Charlie says Alan can stay and Alan sighs in relief saying, "Really?" and Charlie says, "No!" Charlie slams the door in Alan's face, locking Alan outside. Charlie then turns out the lights and goes upstairs to bed. At first, Alan thinks Charlie is joking but begins to realize Charlie is serious when there's no response. Alan then tries to let himself in with his key only to find out that, in just the 6 hours that he was gone, Charlie changed the locks! Alan calls for Charlie again, no response. It suddenly starts to rain and we hear Alan say from outside, "Oh crap."

Charlie says "Thank you," and Alan replies, "No, thank YOU." Apparently, Charlie has forgiven Alan and has let him stay with him again.

At the end, I think the reason why Charlie let Alan move back in was because he thought Alan learned his lesson.

Originally, when Alan showed up at Judith's and Herb's house, they should've realized that he got kicked out of Charlie's house.
Its always humorous to see and know that both Charlie & Alan get along with Herb 😅.
