      If you aren't blanking at least a couple of times a year you aren't trying hard enough. The easiest way to not blank is never try anything new and you don't learn much doing that.

    Lovely spot Nathe; good to see the wildlife too. I’m just back from another two days/ 1 night stay up on Skye ( mileage has been crazy lately doing that 550 mile Roy strip!) and I took and returned two 2pounder pollock, lots of coalies and not much else. My 3 day visit in early Feb was 2 blanks out of the 3 days; but I did get close to a lovely otter. Even Neist Point last Sunday 26th Feb; gorgeous day and perfect conditions , was very quiet - and a local auld lad who fished every chance he gets said it was an unusual year. Then again; there’s always the next new mark and the potential that it brings. Good to see the VHF in use; I’ve got one now after you recommended it. Calms my old worrying head. Tight lines mate.

    • @SlippyLimpets
      @SlippyLimpets  Рік тому

      It soon mounts up, and sometimes not worth the mileage but then there's that little bird in the back of your mind saying 'the fishing will be mint this trip, go and top the fuel tank up'. You might already do this but I like to keep a record of the conditions of when I catch and don't, helps me see a pattern and know when and when not to travel. VHF is an awesome safety tool and not used by enough folk. Tight lines mate👍🎣

      My Grandad (A fisherman) told me that the best years he ever had was after WW2, no doubt that the Danish and Dutch hoover fishing boats, hovering just on the 12 mile limit, are decimating stocks, at least with Brexit they can't get closer. We need breeding areas to be established, easily done but a lack of will, farmers put back fertiliser and care for the land, professional fishing boats only take.

    I hardly fish any matches anymore, one local open run by an old club and a 5 match series run by an old match mate in winter at Arbroath. I blanked at the last one of the series this year. One thing i've noticed this year is as soon as conditions calm off after a sea most of the fish move out quickly.
    In years past you would sometimes need as much as 20lb plus to win a flat calm daylight match, not anymore. Sub 10lb bags won a couple of the matches at night this winter. Definitely plenty feeding for them further out the last few years. Seal numbers climbing rapidly last ten years isn't doing any favours either. I lost 2 fish to a seal in darkness one night last week,a real pain when they are hard to come by anyway.

    • @SlippyLimpets
      @SlippyLimpets  Рік тому

      There's no doubt that fishing is getting tougher as the years go by. Jan and Feb are traditionally good months for me, but I think I f***d up by trying this mark. I thought my usual marks had been hammered, so I tried one with shallower water l but with more structure, and it didn't pay off. Hopefully, things improve for both🤞👍🎣

      @robertgallacher7214 Рік тому

      @@SlippyLimpets The shallow stuff died up here first. combination of angling pressure on what would be resident fish and the main body of fish that appear in winter just disappearing.
      I had my last trip of winter a couple of nights ago on a mark that would be a cert up to 5 or 6 years ago for 8 to low teens numbers in the conditions and tide i had and a at least a couple over 5lb. I had 4 bites, landing two, best only 2lb 11oz. There's plenty of undersizers constantly banging away at the baits on most marks and that tells you the bigger fish aren't anywhere close.
      Was a gillnet out as well, right across the mark but with the structure there they don't tend to affect the fishing too much.
      Managed 105 for 26 trips with 2 blanks 144 hrs fished). Average bag weight 11lb which isn't great but at least well up on last year which was the worst in every metric i can remember since i started. Hopefully it will be a bit better again next year and it's not the beginning of the end for inshore North Sea cod fishing.

    Eyup Nathan. I'm as interested in the lives of fish as I am in catching them. As you said at the end, sometimes all we can say is that either they are not present or not interested the lures we chose and/or how we presented them. The eternal wonder and draw of fishing for me is to try to find out what the fish are doing and why. I suspect that nature is clever and complex enough for me to never truly know. A chat with the Dolphins might be instructive but we're not clever enough to manage that either. I'll sithi after! Dave.

      I like to tell it how it is and I only fish once a week, so if I didn't post it then there wouldn't be a video for you to watch.

      No worries mate, I understand the frustration, you want to watch a fishing vid to see fish being caught. Hopefully I won't be posting many more blanks
