  • A successful prescribed fire was conducted on the west slope of Little Round Top on April 10, 2017. This area of the park was selected for a prescribed burn because it was an open area at the time of the battle and woody shrubs and invasive species had reclaimed the fields and open areas of the slope. This prescribed fire will aid in managing the vegetation in this area. This area was open at the time of the battle and without treatment, woody vegetation can quickly establish itself and grow into dense woods. The park uses numerous methods to maintain these historically open areas such as prescribed fires, mowing, and herbicide sprays. Of these three tools, prescribed fires are the more cost effective and ecological way to manage woody vegetation. Prescribed fires kill off many of the woody shrubs and invasive species that begin reclaiming these historically open areas while native grasses, which can sometimes be mistaken as weeds, provide habitat and prevent erosion.

    I like how they burned out a buffer around the monuments so the flames and soot from the main burn would not impact them. I'm all for studying historical photographs and restoring the vegetation of the park to the original appearance at the time of the Battle...even if that means removing trees in some areas.

    LRT was long in need of this controlled burn. plum run valley, especially the area east of the trostle farm needs similar treatment. it is so thick in there. impossible to walk the group where willard engaged Barksdale, and where Barksdale fell.

    Thank-God the civil war was not fought in California! 50 years of red tape before you'd get permission to do what is so obviously necessary. Now send in the goats!

    Beautiful footage of what looks like a nifty backing fire. There seems to be adequate staff on hand and very good direction. Congratulations!

    beautiful the way the plants come back. I had a hill at my old house, could not be mowed easily. got to where i would just burn it every spring, to get rid of all the over burden, and let the new come thru. lol great job NPS good vid also

      I wouldn't. This is a lot more sacred ground than someone's back yard or some random creek. What took place here was the bloodiest battle in American history. The relics belong there, untouched and undisturbed.

    This is not the best way to manage undergrowth. Shame on you.

      Nonsense. Fire is a natural tool for exactly such a function.

    • @guavaburst
      @guavaburst 7 років тому

      no it isn't, there are alternatives closer to the natural ebb n flow of nature. The rangers often remark that there isn't wildlife consuming undergrowth for example. don't kid yourself that fire is the natural solution please.

      guavaburst wildlife isn't feasible. They tried. Next time don't comment.

      LMAO! "the natural ebb and flow of nature"??? Fire started by lightning IS a natural solution for undergrowth - and the removal of such undergrowth naturally retards the spread of subsequent fires - in addition to fire being required, for instance, to melt the pitch and allow the propagation of several species of pine. Second to natural sources, controlled burns ARE beneficial to the ecosystem. But whatever you do, don't let facts further confuse your already addled brain.
