  • The Wade Tract in Thomas County, Georgia supports a legendary stand of old growth longleaf pine along with an incredibly diverse vegetative understory. Managers, biologists, and scientists from the Tall Timbers Research Station and Land Conservancy along with land management specialists from an adjacent plantation use prescribed fire to maintain and preserve the trees, plants, and animals in this fire dependent ecosystem. This movie is a compilation of time lapse animations captured during prescribed fire operations at the Wade Tract in 2014. Created by David Godwin, Southern Fire Exchange.

We should do this to the entire country every year

Some ecosystems may not handle annual burning very well and the result could include loss of plant and animal species as well as erosion. Many places however, may benefit from much more fire than they're currently receiving. Many upland ecosystems in the Coastal Plain can sustain fire frequencies as often as every 18 months. Such frequent burning has been advocated by researchers and managers working to manage and restore upland longleaf pine ecosystems, northern bobwhite quail habitat, and other plant and animal species.

@@SouthernFireExch we know how often fires occur in any given region based on how often they start and also from extensive tree ring data

Great time lapse. Let people see how it's done. At least you don't have to deal with palmetto's. :-)

This looks so much like a videogame. Weird. Nice job though

That would look so much better with some oak, hickory, walnut, cherry, and poplar.
