The Arrival of the Mallas
The Mallas migrated from the Mithila region of Bihar to the Kathmandu Valley around the 12th century. Their arrival marked the beginning of a new era in the valley's history. Under their rule, the valley experienced a golden age of art, architecture, and culture. The Mallas were known for their administrative acumen, and they brought with them a sophisticated system of governance that they had developed in Bihar.
Bringing New Castes to the Valley
To strengthen their rule and create a loyal administrative base, the Mallas brought various caste groups from Bihar and Bengal to the Kathmandu Valley. From Bihar, they brought Kayastha, Bhumihar (Amatya), Dhobi, Kasai, and Prajapati (Kumhar). These groups were integrated into the administrative and social fabric of the valley, contributing to the diversity and complexity of the caste system.
From Bengal, they brought Sayami (Teli), Kapali, Mali, Chitrakar, Pod, and Karmakar. These groups were skilled in various trades and crafts, enriching the valley's cultural and economic landscape. The Mallas strategically placed these groups in different roles, ensuring their loyalty and support.
Establishment of the Caste System
The Mallas were instrumental in formalizing the caste system in the Kathmandu Valley. They established a hierarchical social order that categorized people based on their occupation and birth. This system was designed to maintain social order and control, with each caste having a specific role and status in society.
One of the significant changes introduced by the Mallas was the reclassification of existing local groups. The children of the Licchavis, who were previously the ruling elite (Mahajans of the Mahajanapada), were placed into the Japu caste, diluting their previous status and integrating them into a lower social stratum. Similarly, the Somas, Kirats, Gopal, and Mahispal groups were classified into the Jyapu group and mixed with the Kumhar Prajapati, further diluting their bloodline and reducing their social standing.
Rise of the Shresthas
The Shresthas emerged as the supreme leaders in the Kathmandu Valley after the implementation of the caste system. The Shresthas were a mixture of Bihari Rajputs, Kayasthas, and Bhumihars. With their administrative skills and strategic marriages, they established themselves at the top of the social hierarchy. The Shresthas held significant political and economic power, overseeing major administrative functions and dominating trade and commerce in the valley.
Impact on Local Society
The Mallas' introduction of new castes and the establishment of a rigid caste system had a profound impact on the local society. It created a complex social hierarchy that determined individuals' roles, duties, and privileges. The blending of different cultural groups from Bihar and Bengal with the local population led to a unique and diverse cultural tapestry in the Kathmandu Valley.
However, the caste system also entrenched social divisions and inequality. The reclassification of local groups into lower castes and the introduction of new administrative and artisan castes from outside the valley created a stratified society. The local groups that were pushed into lower castes faced social and economic marginalization, which had long-lasting effects on their communities.

Hajur Sandhi nai bhako ho, but not as simply as this narrator states. Obviously, it lacks a lot of details, but the fact that the video says it was straight forward shows either a lack of depth in Knowledge or chose to disregard it which akeens to propaganda. For example, the Limbu kingdoms did not just easily agreed for treaty as the video narrates.They fought a lot of continuos wars with wins and losses on both sides. One episode of such battles - both sides agreed to decide the outcome by duel fight between the commanders of both armies. When the Limbu commander won, ofcourse like in a lot of times elsewhere, the Gorkhas did not honor the agreement and cunningly attacked the Limbu army who where unarmed. Explore more personally and theres plenty of records easily available. Im sure, a lot of facts are missing elsewhere and I understand the limit of time for the video, but this does not excuse the events bending. Hope everyone, tries to understand and analyse without bias and pure intentions.
